Winders is coming! Eagles ink Silas Winders to NLI

University of Southern Indiana Men’s/Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field Coach Mike Hillyard announced that the Screaming Eagles have signed incoming freshman Silas Winders (Mansfield, Tennessee) to a national letter of intent to compete for the men’s program in 2020-21.

Winders, the younger brother of USI All-Americans Javan Winders and Titus Winders, is a two-time Foot Locker Cross Country national finalist as well as a two-time Tennessee state champion at Henry County High School in Paris, Tennessee.

“Silas has been on our radar for quite some time, and we are extremely fortunate that he has been closely connected to our program for the last four years while watching his brothers compete,” Hillyard said. “His success over the last year brought most of the top NCAA Division I programs in the country to the table, but at the end of the day, Silas went with what he felt was the best decision for him to continue to thrive as a student-athlete.”

Winders, is one of the top competitors, nationally, in the 2020 class as he ranks fifth in the nation among 2020 graduates in the 5k (14:29.32), sixth in the 3,200 meters (8:57.17) and 11th in the mile (4:12.26).

The four-time cross country All-State and All-Region honoree also has garnered three indoor track & field All-State awards as well as three outdoor track & field All-State accolades.

Winders looks to continue the success that Javan and Titus have had during their USI careers. Javan, currently in his final year at USI, earned All-America honors as a freshman in the distance medley relay; while Titus, currently a sophomore at USI, is coming off his second straight All-America effort at the NCAA II Cross Country Championships after winning both the Great Lakes Valley Conference and NCAA II Midwest Region titles this fall.

“Silas is disciplined, exceptionally coachable, a great teammate and he has a clear vision for what he wants to achieve,” Hillyard said. “We’re thrilled to finally have all of the Winders brothers back in the same uniform.”

USI Track & Field resumes action Saturday when it travels to Birmingham, Alabama, to compete in the UAB Vulcan Invite.

Feliciano caps off season with national recognition

UE freshman recognized by VolleyballMag.com

An exclamation point was added to the freshman campaign for University of Evansville volleyball player Melanie Feliciano as she was named a 2019 VolleyballMag.com All-Freshman Honorable Mention.

She became the first Purple Aces player to earn the recognition.  In her first season at UE, she set the program freshman record with a total of 456 kills.  Her average of 4.18 kills per set was second in the Missouri Valley Conference and top three among freshmen in the nation.

“We know Melanie had a big year and was an asset for our program,” UE head volleyball coach Fernando Morales said.  “Having the recognition from a nationwide magazine is huge for us, hopefully we can build on that and reach our goal of being in the top four in the conference in the near future.”

Feliciano was named the MVC Freshman of the Week on four occasions throughout the 2019 season with her top performance being a 36-kill effort against Eastern Illinois.  At the time, it was a UE program record and remains tied for the third-highest total in a single match in MVC history.

A native of Ponce, Puerto Rico, Feliciano arrived in Evansville on July 22 and was able to quickly adjust to the new settings.

“It was my first time leaving home, but having friends here along with our coaching being from Puerto Rico has really helped,” Feliciano explained.  “My family was able to come to Evansville for the home tournament in September.  It was the best; I really wanted to play my best for them.”

In three matches on Sept. 13-14 at Meeks Family Fieldhouse, Feliciano put on a clinic, recording a total of 92 kills in just 13 sets, an average of 7.1 kills per frame.  She capped off the weekend with the record-setting 36-kill performance against Eastern Illinois.  Making the weekend even better was that she was named the tournament MVP.

The 2019 season for UE began in Cape Girardeau, Mo. on Sept. 6.  Feliciano admitted that she was nervous to play at the next level, but made a quick adjustment.

“My teammates and coaches said not to worry, they always support me,” Feliciano exclaimed.  “I arrived in Evansville for the practice and it did not start out the way I wanted.  Everyone said that I would make it and thanks to their support, I have done that.”

Coach Morales explained on several occasions throughout the 2019 campaign that Feliciano was always working to get better and was a very coachable student-athlete.  She has used the feedback from her coaches to improve her game and continue to evolve as a player.

“I know that I have more to work on and get better with and with the help of my coaches and teammates, I will do it,” she added.

The recognition from VolleyballMag.com was just a small part of an exciting season for Feliciano and her team.  Entering the season, two of the primary goals of the team were to finish with a winning record and earn a spot in the MVC Tournament.  Through a total team effort, both goals were accomplished and the team is focused on even bigger goals moving forward.”

Aces fall in match up against Braves

Bradley scored the first nine points of the game and would never give up the lead, defeating the University of Evansville men’s basketball team by a final of 72-52 on Wednesday night at the Ford Center.

K.J. Riley led the Purple Aces (9-7, 0-3 MVC) with 12 points.  He was 8-for-10 from the free throw line 20 out of 24 attempts from the stripe over the last two games.  Freshman Marcus Henderson recorded a career-high nine points in the game.  He hit a pair of triples while eclipsing his previous scoring mark of six points, which he set on two occasions.  John Hall finished the night with nine points.

“I thought midway through the second half, our energy was where it was supposed to be.  We made a few mental mistakes early on and had some miscues,” UE interim coach Bennie Seltzer said.  “Bradley is too good of a team to spot 10 points early on.  We did that and had an uphill battle the rest of the way.  It all comes down to how hard we play and how well we defend.”

Leading the Braves (11-5, 2-1 MVC) was Nate Kennell, who had team highs with 17 points and 10 boards.  Darrell Brown scored 16.

Bradley set the tone early on, scoring the first nine points of the game.  Evansville missed its first five attempts while turning it over once before Noah Frederking got UE on the board with a 3-pointer.  After the Braves pushed their lead to 16-5, the Aces got back on the board with a pair of Jawaun Newton free throws with Riley adding one of his own.

The lead for Bradley continued to hover around double figures before the final minute when they added the final five points of the half to go into the break leading 34-19.  Nate Kennell had 13 points in the half while no Evansville player had more than three points.

Over the opening minutes of the second period, the Braves added to the lead, going up by 25 points at 52-27.  Trailing 55-31 with 11 minutes remaining, the Aces did their best to come back.  UE recorded 11 points in a row while cutting the deficit to 12 points with six minutes left.

A Riley free throw got it started before Henderson drained a triple.  Riley added three more free throws before Sam Cunliffe finished it off with his second long ball of the night, making it a 55-42 game.  Evansville’s defense buckled down, keeping Bradley off the board for a span of six minutes while holding them to nine consecutive missed shots.

After UE got within 13, the Braves regrouped and pushed their lead back to 20, finishing with the 72-52 win.

Bradley shot 41.4% for the game with Evansville finishing at 33.3%.  The Braves grabbed 48 rebounds on the night while limiting the Aces to 30.

Evansville will look to regain its edge on Saturday when it travels to Loyola for a 3 p.m. game.

“IS IT TRUE” JANUARY 9, 2020

10

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE that a group calling itself “FOR EVANSVILLE” is in the process of putting together a publication on the State of Evansville that is called “THE STATE OF E”?…the report is expected to be a fair and honest look at the state of things in the City of Evansville and will be a snapshot of how life is for the citizens of Evansville at the end of a given year?  …we must confess that the information we read so far has motivated us to post some additional facts and information that might be helpful to the “THE STATE OF E” report created by the “FOR EVANSVILLE” group?

IS IT TRUE that Evansville was just profiled in a summary of FBI statistics in the State of Indiana for being the 4th most dangerous city in the state?…many members of the CCO readership have expressed surprise but that just tells us that they have not been paying attention?…the rise of the rates of violent crime in Evansville has been the subject of dozens of columns in the CCO starting with drive-by shootings and a parking lot shoot out in downtown Evansville roughly 10 years ago and continuing through 2017 when Evansville had enough murders to compete with hell holes like St. Louis, Detroit, and Baltimore for the dubious honor of the murder capital of America?…the specific words used in the article were, “with a crime rate of 57 per one hundred thousand residents, Evansville has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to communities of all sizes”?…the only cities in Indiana identified as more dangerous than Evansville were Indianapolis, South Bend, and Michigan City

IS IT TRUE we wonder how Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend will explain the distinction of South Bend being the 2nd most dangerous in Indiana after he had been in charge for 8 years?…we highly doubt that being the mayor of a small violent town with crime statistics that mirror giant lawless communities qualifies anyone to claim to have the qualifications to be the President of the United States?…we expect the crescendo regarding the shortcomings and legacy of crime and poverty in South Bend will be ratcheted up in the next Democrat debate and that Mayor Pete will really have no adequate response to explain any of this away?

IS IT TRUE everyday members of our local law enforcement work many scenes of shootings several times every week? …they also chase and apprehend suspects fleeing the scene of the shootings? …we are proud of our man and women in blue for help keeping our community safe from bad people? …our law enforcement has an extremely stressful and dangerous job?  …the next time you see our first responders please give them a “thumbs up” for doing a great job in protecting us?

IS IT TRUE in 2018 we predict that starting on January 1, 2019, the Vanderburgh County Commissioners will become a non-partisan group of like-minded individuals that will begin to make good decisions based on “Good Policy Policy”?  …we are extremely pleased that three (3) extremely talented individuals have been working hand-in-hand in order to take Vanderburgh County into the remainder of the 21st Century?  …County Commissioners Cheryl Musgrave, Ben Shoulders, and Jeff Hatfield have made us proud that they were elected as the “THREE MAYORS OF VANDERBURGH COUNTY”?  …as of today, our predictions have been spot on?
IS IT TRUE we are hearing that some Republicans are looking for ways to stymied County Commissioner Ben Shoulders political agenda because they’re afraid that he might run for Mayor of Evansville one day?  …we feel that they will be fool-hearted to consider such a move?
IS IT TRUE we would like to thank a long-time supporter and friend Joe Wallace for his help with the City-County Observer during the time that our publisher was facing serious health problems?  …that Joe Wallace is a shining example of what true friendship is all about?
IS IT TRUE that the Executive Director of SWIRCA & MORE, Rhonda Zuber is doing one heck of a job for this most worthy community organization?
IS IT TRUE that Ellen Horan has just resigned as the Executive Director of GAGE to take a job in Texas?  …we wouldn’t be surprised if this “E For Everyone” group will pay big bucks to hire an out town agency to find an out-of-towner to replace Ms. Horan?
IS IT TRUE that several years ago Deaconess Hospital and Henderson Community Methodist Hospital formed a group called an “ACO?”  …that “ACO” is where referrals are preferably kept within the group and only certain doctors at Deaconess and Methodist are invited to be a part of that group?  …we wonder how the “ACO” referral group created by Deaconess Hospital and Henderson Community Methodist Hospital is currently doing?
IS IT TRUE last year it was reported that a Congressional sub-committee heard testimony from the Department of Veterans Affairs officials concerning computer problems that have caused GI Bill benefit payments covering education and housing to be delayed for months or never be delivered? …because of this unacceptable bureaucratic mistake that many veterans are facing serious debt problems or even homelessness because of this issue?  …that the Veterans Affairs official that caused this unacceptable problem was demoted instead of being fired?
IS IT TRUE when the people fear the Government we have Tyranny!  When the Government fears the people we have Liberty
Today’s “Readers Poll” question is: Do you feel that County Commissioner Jeff Hatfield’s re-election endorsement of Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave was effective?
