VHS REQUESTING EMERGENCY FOSTERS & ADOPTERS FOR DISPLACED HURRICANE MILTON PETS

0

(Evansville, Indiana – October 9, 2024)

The Vanderburgh Humane Society is collaborating with Best Friends Animal Society to eventually accept pets displaced from Hurricane Milton.

To prepare for these pets’ arrival, VHS is launching an emergency fee-waived adoption special AND plea for foster parents effective immediately, Wednesday, October 9th. FREE adoptions apply to every available pet in the VHS’ care: dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, small animals, and cats at River Kitty Cat Cafe. The shelter currently has more than 400 pets available.

Browse pets and apply for adoption here: https://www.vhslifesaver.org/adopt/the-adoption-process.

If families cannot commit to adoption at this time, temporary fosters are also needed. ALL expenses including food are covered for VHS-affiliated foster families. Link to foster information & applications: https://www.vhslifesaver.org/get-involved/foster.

Please note that families will be adopting or fostering CURRENT pets here locally, to make space for displaced hurricane pets. The pets from the hurricane are not here yet and cannot be transported here until space is made.

Things are already dire in the animal sheltering field nationwide, and the VHS is pleading for the community to step up and help in this crisis to save more lives.

Those who cannot adopt or foster may make a monetary donation to cover the costs of daily animal care at https://give.vhslifesaver.org or by calling 812-426-2563 ext. 214.

FOOTBALL GAME RETURNS TO HISTORIC BOSSE FIELD AFTER 13 YEARS

0

In an exciting and historic matchup, high school football will return to the iconic Bosse Field for the first time in 13 years as Memorial High School takes on Castle High School on Friday, October 18, 2024.  This game, part of Memorial’s “100-Year Series,” promises to be an unforgettable event for football lovers, history enthusiasts, and the local community.

Bosse Field, the third-oldest baseball stadium in the country, will once again transform into a 6,200-seat football arena, continuing its rich tradition of hosting football games.  The game kicks off at 7:00 PM CDT, and the night will be extra special as it also marks “Senior Night” for both schools, honoring the dedication and achievements of the senior athletes.

A special preview night will be held on Thursday, October 17, from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM, offering the public and media a “sneak peek” of the field transformation.  Beginning at 6:30 PM, the evening will transition into a more celebratory atmosphere with food and beverages.  Tickets for the latter part of the preview event are $28 (which includes food, soft drinks, and/or water), and participation is limited to guests 21 and over (cash bar).

In addition to the football action, Friday Night’s event will feature several special moments:

Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry will perform the honorary coin toss.

  • Both teams will sport throwback jerseys—Memorial will wear green uniforms celebrating their Holy Cross and Notre Dame ties, while Castle will bring back their 1982 state championship look.

Bosse Field’s concession stands will feature a special themed item for the event called “The Eastsider,” a unique creation made with a glazed donut bun, sausage patty, American cheese, and maple mayo sauce.  Fans will not only enjoy the thrilling football action but also have the chance to savor this one-of-a-kind local flavor.

“Bosse Field is more than a sports venue—it’s a part of Evansville’s history,” said Memorial Athletics Director Chad Dockery.  “This game is a celebration of the past, the present, and the community, bringing football back to a place that has hosted over 500 high school games since 1915.”

Whether you’re a football fan, a history lover, or simply looking for a memorable evening, this event promises to be an unforgettable experience.  Tickets are priced at $10 and can be purchased through either school’s website or at the Bosse Field box office.

The Recipe for a Lasting Small Business: Insight from Piece of Cake’s 26-Year Journey

0

For 26 years, Piece of Cake has been a beloved part of the Downtown Evansville community. Founded in 1998, Cate Sisco opened her bakery with her sister Kristi. The bakery was born out of their shared passion for baking and decorating. Cate recalls that she “just wanted to share family recipes.” A prime example of this is the self-proclaimed ‘best cheesecake,’ a family recipe dating back to the 1920s. Gaining her talents and passion from her mother and grandmother has allowed Cate to turn her passion into a rewarding career. She shares, “I have been able to do what I love my entire adult life…I love what we do, I love being a part of the community.”

Operating a business is always challenging, and Cate has found that one of her biggest hurdles has been adapting to the ever-changing needs of her employees. Cate proudly states, “If you need a flexible schedule, we can do that for you.” Cate ensures her team has the flexibility they need, which partly contributes to her astounding employee retention, with some employees being employed for nine-plus years.

While employee retention is crucial, Cate understands that customer retention is just as
important to her business’s success and lasting impact. Reflecting on the relationships
she’s built over the years, she notes that many of her customers have been with her since
the very beginning. She proudly states, “I love knowing we did your first birthday cake and
now we are doing your wedding cake.”

When asked what advice she would pass on to aspiring business owners in the Downtown
Evansville area, Cate emphasized that consistency is key. She believes that a customer can
only give so much leniency, and that is why it is important to “be there” and “keep your
hours.” Cate also stresses the importance of managing expenses wisely, advising, “Keep
your overhead low, because a bad couple of weeks can put you out of business if your rent
is too expensive and product goes to waste.”

UE women’s soccer travels to Chicago for clash with UIC

It will be the Purple Aces second visit to Flames Field

CHICAGO — The University of Evansville women’s soccer will look to take a series lead against the UIC Flames on Thursday evening.
UE women’s soccer added another point to their resume in a 1-1 draw against Drake over the weekend. Junior forward Amy Velazquez (Avon, Ind. / Avon HS) scored the tying goal for the Aces in the 83rd minute of the match for her second goal of the season. Velazquez took the ball from a Bulldog defender up into the 12 and passed over to senor forward Hailey Autenrieb (Cincinnati / Seton HS) on the right side of the penalty box, who quickly returned it to Velazquez at the six. Velazquez struck the ball with her right foot and blew it past Drake’s goalkeeper into the center of the net to help Evansville to another MVC point.

UIC is one of the Aces newer opponent in women’s soccer as the two teams never faced each other prior to the Flames addition to the MVC in the 2022 season. Neither team has won on the road in the series since beginning play in 2022. The Aces will look to see if they can get the first road win and take the series lead on Thursday evening. Both games in the series have been decide by a single goal with only two goals tallied so far in two meetings.

The Flames come into Thursday’s match as one of the conference’s leaders with an MVC record of 3-0-2 after having seven losses in the non-conference season. UIC put together a big win over Indiana State on Tuesday with their highest scoring output of the season with three goals scored. It was the Flames fifth shutout of the year and their fifth game unbeaten in conference play. UIC is led by junior forward Riley Collett with eight points from three goals and two assists.

Velazquez is now tied with freshman defender Emmy Brenner (Arlington, Tenn. / St. Benedict at Auburndale HS) for most goals on the season with two each. Autenrieb and Velazquez are tied as the Aces total offensive leaders with five points. Autenrieb has one goal and three assists while Velazquez has two goals and one assist.

Maddie Rollett earns second MVC award of the fall

0

Rollett qualified for NCAA Zones against Centre College

LOUIS. – Maddie Rollett’s stellar start to the 2024-25 season continued on Wednesday as she was named the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Diver of the Week for the second time in as many weeks.

Rollett has been nearly perfect in the opening two weeks of the fall.  After sweeping both diving events at the Butler Double Dual, she accomplished the same feat at Centre College on Friday.

In the 1-meter dive, Rollett earned a score of 273.45.  That mark was high enough to qualify her for the NCAA Diving Zones.  She followed that up with a 252.90 in the 3-meter event, giving her another victory.

Trailblazers get 20th win of the season in Region road win at John A. Logan CARTERVILLE

0

CARTERVILLE, Ill. – The Vincennes University volleyball team picked up their 20th win of the season Tuesday night as the Blazers headed to John A. Logan College in Carterville, Ill. for a Region 24 showdown with the Volunteers.

Vincennes was able to come out on top in this match between the two teams currently at the top of the Region 24 standings, taking the match in four sets 25-22, 17-25, 25-21, 25-17.

The match was very close from the very beginning as the two teams traded early runs in the opening set before the Blazers were able to rally from behind with a 9-1 scoring run to take an 18-14 lead.

The two teams traded side outs until the Volunteers cut the deficit down to one at 23-22 before VU closed out set one with back-to-back points to take the set 25-22 and grab the early 1-0 match lead.

Set two again began as a back-and-forth battle before the Volunteers broke away with six straight points and would ride the home crowd momentum to a 25-17 set two victory and even the match at 1-1 going to a pivotal third set.

The teams again traded scoring runs early in set three with VU gaining the upper hand with four straight points to take an 18-15 advantage.

After another series of side outs, VU was able to close out the third set strong with a 3-0 scoring run to take set three 25-21 and regain the match lead at 2-1.

The Trailblazers rode this momentum into set four as VU jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the fourth set.

John A. Logan would attempt to battle back and force a fifth set but were unable to overcome the Vincennes lead as the Blazers closed out set four 25-17 to take the match 3-1 over the host Volunteers.

“We saw this game not as any kind of revenge, but as getting redemption,” VUVB Head Coach Gary Sien said. “We lost not only a game the last time we played them but a bit of our being. We think we got that back tonight.”

“Sounds simple enough but we played together,” Sien added. “Even after that tough loss to Wallace State, we stayed together. They are so tough minded, we are so proud of their play and effort.”

“Strategically, we started right off the bat with serving as tough as we can and going at certain players,” Sien said. “We were trying to disrupt their offense with that and then block. Our front row was exceptional tonight as we touched nearly every hit with our block.”

The VU offense was led by sophomore Elisa Dalla Pozza (Vincenza, Italy) who controlled the game at the net with 19 kills, six blocks, three digs, two set assists and an ace.

Sophomores Laura Tavares (Merida, Venezuela) and Isadora Dias (Rio Grande de Norte, Brazil) also reached double-digit kills, each recording 10 kills in the match.

Tavares would add a pair of blocks and a dig, while Dias filled up the stats sheet with seven digs, two aces, one block and one set assist.
