Aces To battle Sycamores At The Hulman Center

 On Wednesday, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team travels north to Terre Haute to take on Indiana State for a 6 p.m. CT game inside the Hulman Center.  Wednesday’s game will be carried on ESPN+ and the Purple Aces Radio Network.

 Setting the Scene

– Evansville looks to break two streaks on Wednesday; UE has dropped its last four contests overall while falling in its last eight trips to the Hulman Center

– In last year’s road game, the Sycamores defeated the Purple Aces by a final of 85-62

– The Sycamore defense held the Aces to shooting percentages of 35.0% and 36.2% in last year’s regular-season meetings

– Following the trip to Terre Haute, the Aces are at the Ford Center for their next two games with Missouri State and Drake coming to town

Last Time Out

– Saturday’s game at Loyola saw the Aces hang tough, taking a 15-14 lead in the first half, but the Ramblers finished the first half on a 13-2 run before taking a 78-44 victory

– The Ramblers shot 70.5% in the game, including 75% (18/24) in the first half

– Sam Cunliffe was the leader for UE, scoring 11 points on 5-of-12 shooting

– K.J. Riley finished with seven tallies

– It marked the fourth consecutive defeat for the Aces inside Gentile Arena

Leader of the Pack

– With the absence of DeAndre Williams, Sam Cunliffe has stepped up and recorded a team-high 11 points at Loyola

– Over the last four games, Cunliffe has started to shoot better, hitting 19 of his 41 attempts to improve his season shooting to 39.5%

– In the final 10 non-conference games, Cunliffe shot over 40% from the field just twice but has reached that mark in all four MVC games

– He has ten double-figure efforts in 17 contests

Looking at the numbers

– When comparing the stats for UE in non-conference play versus MVC contests, there are a few disparities

– In non-conference contests, UE averaged 78.1 points per game while shooting 45.5%

– Through four league games, the Aces have averaged 56.8 points while shooting 39.2%

– The numbers in 3-point shooting drop from 35.7% to 24.4% in the Valley

– Evansville has scored under 60 points in three out of four conference games; the team was held under 60 on two occasions in 13 non-conference games

Scouting the Opponent

– Indiana State enters its first match-up against the Purple Aces with a 9-6 record while splitting their first two MVC games

– The Sycamores are coming off of a 65-52 home win over Illinois State on Saturday and have held three of their first four league opponents to 68 points or less.

– ISU is 9-2 in its last 11 games

– Tyreke Key paces the Sycamores with 17.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game

– Key has excelled in his chances at the line, shooting 87.9%

Franklin College President Fired After Arrest On Sex Charges

INDIANAPOLIS—Franklin College President Thomas Minar was fired after the school’s Board of Trustees learned he had been arrested in Wisconsin on charges connected to using a computer to facilitate a sex crime, child enticement and exposing a child to harmful narrations.

James V. Due, president of the Board of Trustees, said in an email sent Monday to the college community that the board acted after learning of the arrest via an email from police in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Due’s note did not say when the arrest occurred.

“This is the first such incident the board has been made aware of regarding Dr. Minar, and we are committed to cooperating fully with Wisconsin authorities and working to ensure the safety of our campus community,” Due wrote.

Due said that the executive committee felt it was essential to act immediately when members learned of the arrest and sever Minar’s relationship with the college.

The Associated Press reported that Minar was arrested on Jan. 6 by Sturgeon Bay police and freed on a $7,500 bond following a hearing the next day. Door County District Attorney Colleen Nordin told the Associated Press that she expects to file criminal charges soon.

Under terms of his release, Minar is to have no direct unsupervised contact with minors and he is barred from using social media.

Minar, a native of Illinois, spent three decades working for educational institutions, including American University, Roosevelt University and the University of Illinois. Before joining Franklin in 2015 as the college’s 16thpresident, he was the vice president of development and alumni relations at American University in Washington D.C.

In an email to the Indianapolis Business Journal, Minar said: “I very much regret the circumstances which led the college to terminate our relationship.”

“My years at Franklin have been very rewarding and I am extraordinarily grateful to so many staff and faculty who have worked hard with me to advance the college in these challenging times for higher education,” Minar wrote. “I wish nothing but the best for Franklin College and for the people who make it the wonderful institution it has become.”

Lori Schroeder, provost and dean of the college, will serve as interim president until the Board of Trustees executive committee appoints an acting president, which should occur within a week.

Minar had been scheduled to leave his post at the end of the current academic year and as president had put in place policies to deal with sexual misconduct and student safety.

Franklin College has launched an investigation into Minar’s conduct while president, Due said, adding that students will have a safe and confidential way to report incidents of inappropriate behavior.

“An incident of this magnitude understandably can shake the core of our campus,” Due said.  “The Board of Trustees and college leadership are committed to working together and doing what we as a Franklin College community do best – caring and supporting one another – while staying focused on the important goal of educating the next generation of innovative leaders.”

Applications Are Open For “Quick Impact Placebased” Grant

0

the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs along with the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) announced that the Quick Impact Placebased Grant Program is open for applications. This matching grant is designed to fund transformational projects that spark community-wide conversations and creativity.

A new partnership with the Indiana Arts Commission will earmark additional funding for arts-focused projects. In addition to OCRA’s funding, IAC will provide an enhanced programmatic opportunity, while also increasing the total number of fundable projects. The IAC has prioritized its funding to go toward projects that:

  • Have Main Street as the lead applicant;
  • Are located in a rural county, with a population of 50,000 or less;
  • Are public art projects that involve an artist (or artists), with at least some funds directed to support their effort; and
  • Have not been funded by IAC before.

Funding for the IAC portion of the program is made possible by support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

“Our organizations have continued to find new opportunities to creatively collaborate and expand community capacity across the state,” said Jodi Golden, Executive Director of OCRA. ”I encourage communities throughout the entire state to reach out to their local artists, Main Streets, and non-profit organizations to create new partnerships or strengthen existing relationships.”

The project funding range is $2,500 to $5,000 and for every dollar in grant funds awarded, 50 cents must be matched, via cash or in-kind, by the applicant. Eligible applicants can include community or civic organizations, Main Street organizations, local units of government or schools. In order to apply for this grant, applicants must have a documented partnership for the proposed project.

Golden said that eligible projects should have a positive community impact while existing and underutilized assets should include a new or additional use. Examples of eligible projects include, but are not limited to:

  • Public art;
  • Storefront transformations;
  • Pop-up shop and gathering spots;
  • Shipping container repurpose; and
  • Project-based learning.

“We’re excited to partner with OCRA to provide even more communities in our state with funds that focus on the arts,” said Lewis Ricci, Executive Director of IAC. “Cultural vibrancy attracts employers and employees and drives more economic development in communities and in the state. It also brings communities together to envision a brighter future for the lives of our citizens.”

Successful applications will demonstrate community collaboration, partnership capacity, and meaningful public benefits. Applicants are encouraged to contact their respective community liaison to discuss project eligibility and competitiveness.

An informational video will be released on Wednesday, January 22, that will further explain the program and application process. Applications must be received by 4 p.m. ET, Friday, March 6. Funded projects will be announced on Thursday, April 2. For more information, visitwww.in.gov/ocra/quipgrant.htm.

“IS IT TRUE” JANUARY 14, 2020

0

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE that the French philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville was so enamored by the concept of the United States of America that he came to our young nation in 1831 to learn what it was about our country that caused so many people from other countries to want to come here?…de Tocqueville wrote a book called Democracy in America with his observations on what the future had in store for the young experiment in self-governance that was the first of its kind since the ancient Greeks imploded by adopting pure democracy?…pure democracy is when the will of the people is sought at all times including sentences for crimes committed or invented?…perhaps the biggest insult to democracy ever was when the ancient Greeks executed Socrates by forcing him to drink hemlock after a vote of the people?…the people were, of course, goaded into voting Socrates to die by an up and coming young politician who saw the philosophy of Socrates as a threat to his own ambitions?

IS IT TRUE there is much in Democracy in America that serves as a lesson in modern-day America and here are some of the most applicable quotes in no particular order?

IS IT TRUE “The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money?”

IS IT TRUE that day is upon us as pork-barrel politics, patronage jobs, and overpriced public projects are now the rule as opposed to the exception?  …“America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great?”

IS IT TRUE that with the push of Socialism that is on the front pages today, it is worthwhile to ponder the following quote with an open mind?  … that “Democracy extends the sphere of individual freedom, socialism restricts it. Democracy attaches all possible value to each man; socialism makes each man a mere agent, a mere number. Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word: equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude?”

IS IT TRUE de Tocqueville has something to say about the quality of people who seek elected office too?  …“I do not know if the people of the United States would vote for superior men if they ran for office, but there can be no doubt that such men do not run.”

IS IT TRUE that the obsession with equality is addressed in the following quote?  …“Americans are so enamored of equality, they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom?”

IS IT TRUE that de Tocqueville has little use for political parties either?  …“There are many men of principle in both parties in America, but there is no party of principle?”

IS IT TRUE that fear of the unknown and being afraid of change and one may even say an unwillingness to Live Outside the Box is encapsulated with the following quote?  …“I cannot help fearing that men may reach a point where they look on every new theory as a danger, every innovation as a toilsome trouble, every social advance as a first step toward revolution, and that they may absolutely refuse to move at all?”

IS IT TRUE that de Tocqueville also realized that an unlimited complement of “rights” vs privileges is covered in the following quote?   …“It’s not an endlessly expanding list of rights — the ‘right’ to education, the ‘right’ to health care, the ‘right’ to food and housing. That’s not freedom, that’s dependency. Those aren’t rights, those are the rations of slavery — hay and a barn for human cattle?”

IS IT TRUE it would be interesting to see what Alexis de Tocqueville would think of our divided nation today?…there are those out there with intelligence, compassion, and a passion to fix long term problems but they do not seem to be interested in serving in government?…the City-County Observer hopes that the nation of the people, by the people, and for the people can survive what our people are doing to the fabric of the nation?

IS IT TRUE we really wonder what Alexis de Tocqueville would say if he had the opportunity to attend last night Evansville City Council meeting?

IS IT TRUE when the people fear the Government we have Tyranny!  When the Government fears the people we have Liberty

Today’s “Readers Poll” question is:  How do you rate the overall performance of State Representative Hollie Sullivan?
