Oakland City University Alumni To Be Inducted Into The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame

Oakland City University is proud to acknowledge two of our alumni who are being inducted on March 25, 2020, into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Jerry Reynolds received his BS degree in Social Studies from then Oakland City College in 1966.  During his senior year, he coached the 1965-66 freshman team.  He has led a notable career in high school, college and professional basketball.  A two-time honorable mention all-state player at Springs Valley High School, he was a member of teams at Vincennes University that was 51-14 over two seasons.  His coaching career continued at Vincennes, where he was an assistant from 1966-1971, including their 1970 NJCAA National Championship season and where he recruited future NBA players Bob McAdoo, “Foots” Walker and Ricky Green.  As an assistant at West Georgia College, he was a member of their 1974 NAIA National Championship coaching staff.  In 10 years as the head coach at Rockhurst University and Pittsburg State University produced 192 wins and four District Coach of the Year honors.  The longest-tenured employee in Sacramento King’s history, his now 35-year career began as the franchise relocated from Kansas City in 1985 and has included the roles of head coach, assistant coach, scout, director of player personnel, general manager and television analyst.  His influence is also noted as the first general manager of the WNBA Sacramento Monarchs, earning his name in the rafters for his impact on that franchise.  He was also a member of the 2004 U.S. Women’s Olympic Team Selection Committee that won the gold medal.  He resides in Roseville, California.

The late Ray Roesner graduated from then Oakland City College in 1957 with a BSE degree in Physical Education, History and Geography.  He was also named Mr. Basketball in 1956. His career reaped accolades as a high school and college player as well as notable coach and administrator roles.  A 1953 graduate of Holland High School, he set school records in single-game points (41), season scoring (617) and career points (830).  He averaged 23.7 points per game his senior season, leading Holland to their first sectional championship and was the state’s leading scorer in the 1953 regionals, totaling 62 points in two games.  His college career included 858 points in two seasons at Oakland City College (21.5 ppg), setting the school’s season scoring record (541).  His senior year 25.8 point per game average was 2nd best in Indiana, trailing only Hall of Famer Bailey Robertson.  He coached 18 seasons at Chrisney, Orleans, Princeton, Holland and Southridge high schools, totaling 201 wins and five sectional championships and was an assistant coach for the Southridge 1998 IHSAA 2A girls champion squad.  Also serving 15 years as the last Principal of Holland High School and first Principal of Southridge High School, he served two terms on the IHSAA Board of Control.  He died in 2018.

Jerry Reynolds and Ray Roesner join five other Oakland City University alumni as members of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame: C. Eugene Cato, 1952; Joe Todrank, 1961, Herman Keller, 1927; Phil Eskew, Sr. 1929; and Charles McConnell, 1925.

YESTERYEAR: ST. LUCAS EVANGELICAL CHURCH CHOIR

St. Lucas Evangelical Church Choir

The St. Lucas Boys Choir, posing at the entrance of the church (now named St. Lucas United Church of Christ), was organized in 1912. In this photograph, members are posing at the entrance of the church, which has stood at 33 West Virginia Street since it was dedicated in 1890.

St. Lucas was originally a German congregation, one of many existing in Evansville in the nineteenth-century. (The German name can be seen in the panel above the door in the picture.) Although the city’s West Side was heavily populated with people of German descent, the Jacobsville neighborhood was also home to many Germans by the turn-of-the-century.

The church expanded rapidly, and in 1907, a new parish hall was built diagonally across the street. Originally named St. Lucas Halle, the spacious structure cost $23,000 to build. A few years ago, it was converted to transitional housing and renamed Lucas Place.

Eagles reflect on this past season

The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team released its list of prospect commitments and National Letter of Intent signees Wednesday afternoon. The Screaming Eagles welcome Abby Bednar, Michaela Cox, Taya Dazey, Julia Evans and Abby Weber as the five incomers to the USI Volleyball program.

USI Volleyball Head Coach Randi Raff believes the group of five will bring additional depth to a roster of 10 returners, following the graduation of its five seniors.

Meet the Newbies

Abby Bednar (Chagrin Falls, Ohio): Abby comes to Evansville as an outside/right side hitter from Kenston High School, where she spent three seasons with the varsity squad. In her time with the Bombers, Bednar earned a pair of honorable mention nods for the all-state team in Ohio, a second-team all-district and first-team all-conference selection while claiming two Offensive Player of the Year awards in conference.

As a member of Academy Volleyball Cleveland, Bednar has played on the national stage for the past seven years, including a third-place finish at the Junior National Championships at 15 years-old.

Raff on Bednar: “Abby is a gifted athlete with a stubbornness that I love to see in a competitor, and a great deal of versatility.”

Michaela Cox (Terre Haute, Indiana): USI Volleyball welcomes Michaela to the program from Terre Haute South Vigo High School, where she played an integral part in the middle for the Braves. Cox received recognition as an all-conference selection and appeared in the Under Armour All-American Watch List while ranking atop the leaderboard in the state of Indiana for hitting percentage and sixth in blocks.

Raff on Cox: “Michaela is a multi-sport athlete with a very high ceiling.  She’s agile and long while offering a no-nonsense work ethic in the middle. Both of her parents are USI grads as well, so we are very excited to have a legacy athlete join our ranks.”

Taya Dazey (Ft. Wayne, Indiana): Taya makes her transition to USI as a four-year varsity starter for Bishop Dwenger High School, earning three consecutive sectional titles along with a regional championship in 2016. The outside hitter earned three first-team all-conference selections in a row with the Saints.

Raff on Dazey: “Taya brings a big arm and a high level of ball control to the outside hitter position. She hits a heavy ball but is also seasoned and savvy at her position. Taya also has the ability to play on both sides of the court which offers further versatility.”

Julia Evans (Ft. Wayne, Indiana): Julia joins together with Dazey to represent northeastern Indiana as former Summit Athletic Conference foes turned collegiate teammates for USI Volleyball. The four-year varsity starter from Concordia Lutheran High School comes to Evansville after recording over 1,000 digs with the Cadets, collecting two all-conference nods and an all-area selection.

Raff on Evans: “Julia rounds out our libero group with a solid all-around game and has the ability to make high-level defensive plays.  I’m elated to add Julia to our ranks as a hard-nosed competitor that brings another level of stability to our offense.”

Abby Weber (Fishers, Indiana): The outside hitter/defensive specialist ventures to USI after earning a pair of varsity letters at Hamilton Southeastern High School. Abby’s tenure with the Royals led to quite a decorated career, including a state-title run culminating in a state runner-up finish along with semi-state, regional and sectional titles, a pair of conference championships, first-team all-state, all-district and all-conference selections, and an induction into the Hamilton Southeastern “Wall of Fame.”

Weber also spent time with Academy Volleyball Indiana, where she appeared on the JVA Watchlist in 2016, ’17 and ’18, and was a member of the 2018 USA Volleyball National Training program as an outside hitter.

Raff on Weber: “Abby is a complete player at the outside hitter position; she’s agile, athletic, hits with range, can tool the block and is highly intelligent. Abby brings a quiet fire to the court which is one of the elements that makes her an elite competitor and will add another level of competition to our gym.”

Eagles come up short at McKendree, 68-64 USI is 9th in NABC & D2SIDA polls

Ninth-ranked University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball came up short in the 2019-20 Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at McKendree University, 68-64, Tuesday evening in Lebanon, Illinois. USI goes to 5-1 overall and 0-1 in the GLVC, while McKendree is 4-2, 1-0 GLVC in 2019-20.

After a rough start of the contest by both team that saw USI leading, 12-10, the Eagles took control with a 19-4 run to post its largest lead of the opening half, 19 points, 33-14. Senior guard Joe Laravie, who had nine points during the run, capped off the run with long-range bomb, while USI shot a blistering 70 percent as a team during the run (7-10), 75 percent from beyond the arc (3-4).

McKendree made a run in the final seven minutes of the opening half, cutting USI’s advantage to 35-23 by the intermission. Laravie posted a team-best 11 points during the first stanza with junior guard/forward Clayton Hughes following with nine points.

In the second half, McKendree came out of the locker room in dominating fashion, rolling to the lead, 39-37, with a 16-2 run and holding USI without a field goal for the first five minutes after halftime. The Bearcats extended the lead to as many as nine points, 56-47, with 9:29 left to play in the contest.

USI fought back, pulling to within one point, 61-60, when junior forward Emmanuel Little hit a pair of free throws with 4:17 to play in the game. The Bearcats, however, locked down the Eagles offense in the final minutes, outscoring USI, 8-4, the rest of the way in the four-point loss.

Individually for the Eagles, Hughes led the way offensively with 16 points on four-of-seven from the field, two-of-three from beyond the arc, and six-of-six from the stripe. Laravie followed with 13 points, while Little rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.

USI is idle until December 15 when the Eagles start a five-game homestand by hosting Lincoln College (Illinois) at the Screaming Eagles Arena. The homestand will include Lincoln, Tiffin University (December 21); King College (December 22); Drury University (January 2), and Southwest Baptist University (January 4).

Note: USI rose to ninth in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA) Top 25 polls that were released today. The Eagles rose one spot in both polls.
