VU Baseball picks up another big home win over Volunteer State

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University baseball team returned to Jerry Blemker Field Wednesday afternoon for another home showdown, this time playing host to Volunteer State Community College from Gallatin, Tenn.

The Trailblazers grabbed an early lead and were able to ride the momentum to their second win over an NJCAA Division I team in the past three days, winning over the Pioneers 12-5.

The Pioneers were the first to break onto the scoreboard, getting a run in the first to take an early 1-0 lead.

Vincennes would respond back in their first time at bat in the bottom of the first, getting a leadoff double by sophomore Bradyn Douglas (Frankton, Ind.), followed by a single by sophomore Nate Montgomery (Lexington, Ind.) and an RBI single by freshman Carter Gricius (Scottsburg, Ind.) to even the score at 1-1.

VU continued the inning and grabbed their first lead of the afternoon with a two-RBI single by sophomore Corbin Napier (Indianapolis, Ind.) to put the Blazers on top 3-1.

Volunteer State would answer back in the fourth to get a pair of runs and even the score at 3-3.

The Trailblazers regained the lead in the fifth after the first six VU batters in the inning reached base safely.

The inning started with a four pitch walk by sophomore Brody Fessel (DePauw, Ind.), followed by a single by sophomore Bryce Gross (Bridgeport, Ill.) and an RBI single by Bradyn Douglas.

The Blazers added to their lead with a two-RBI single by Nate Montgomery and a successful double steal to give the Blazers a 7-3 lead.

Volunteer State would again answer back, getting a pair of runs in the seventh to cut the deficit in half at 7-5.

VU helped put the game away in the eighth with five big insurance runs in the inning.

Vincennes opened the eighth inning with three straight singles by Carter Gricius, Corbin Napier and an RBI single by Jakob Hoyer (Georgetown, Ind.).

The Trailblazers added more runs with a two RBI single by Bryce Gross and a two RBI single by freshman Jevan Andrews (Hobart, Ind.), giving Vincennes a commanding 12-5 lead heading into the ninth.

Vincennes was able to hold the Pioneers off the scoreboard in the ninth, only allowing one base runner in the inning as VU closed out the 12-5 victory over Volunteer State.

“This was truly a team win,” VU Head Baseball Coach Chris Barney said. “Our pitching staff did a good job. We used eight guys to make sure we are ready for the weekend. A lot of guys stepped up at the plate today, RBI from Douglas, two RBIs from Andrews, two RBIs by Montgomery another RBI from Gricius. Two RBIs by Napier, an RBI by Hoyer and two RBIs by Gross hitting in the nine hole. We were able to get contributions from seven or eight different hitters throughout the lineup as well as eight pitchers on the mound, so this is a pretty good team win.”

VU sophomore JD Bowser (Mt. Carmel, Ill.) got the start on the mound for the Trailblazers, throwing on a pitch limit to finish one-third of an inning, allowing one run on three hits and striking out one.

Freshman Wyatt Burris (Farmland, Ind.) was the first Blazer out of the bullpen, throwing three and one-third innings, allowing two runs on three hits.

Sophomore Bryce Gross took over on the mound from his shortstop position to throw one and one-third innings, allowing two hits and striking out three.

Freshman Kory Kingsbury (Evansville, Ind.) came on to get the first out of the sixth inning before turning the game over to freshman Ty Stultz (Terre Haute, Ind.) who promptly got the Pioneers to ground into an inning ending double play.

Stultz finished the day throwing one and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs, one earned on one hit and striking out two.

Freshman Kyle Holder (Mount Vernon, Ind.) threw one and one-third inning, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Freshman Ryan Rayburn (Columbus, Ind.) pitched in the ninth, retiring the only batter he faced before Jakob Hoyer came on to get the final out of the game for the Trailblazers.

“All of the guys that pitched in relief today did a really good job,” Barney added. “I think almost all of them got the first guy they faced out and that’s one of our big things coming out of the bullpen. We were able to stretch it out a bit with some guys. We had some guys in class today that were going to throw early but got here late so we had to throw them later than I originally wanted.”

 

USI walks off versus Bellarmine, 10-9

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana senior centerfielder Khi Holiday singled in the game-winner in the ninth to cap a comeback victory over Bellarmine University, 10-9, Wednesday evening at the USI Baseball Field. USI is 19-22 overall, while Bellarmine is 10-31.
 
Trailing 9-6 going into the bottom of the ninth, junior first baseman Patrick McLellan singled to lead off the rally before singles by junior catcher Charlie Marisca and sophomore rightfielder Cameron Boyd to load the bases. Junior leftfielder Hunter Miller drew an RBI walk to get the scoring going to make the score, 9-7.
 
Junior pinch hitter Kannon Coakley drove in senior pinch runner BJ Banyon to make the score, 9-8, while junior pinch hitter Micajah Wall tied the game, 9-9, with a sacrifice fly and set the stage for Holiday.
 
Holiday sent a high hopper over the pitcher and beat the throw as Miller scored the game-winning run for USI’s 10-9 victory.
 
The four-run rally in the ninth was the fourth time USI had to battle back to take the lead in the game.
 
Trailing 2-0 in the second, Boyd hit the first of his two home runs in the contest to knot the game at 2-2. He would follow with a three-run blast in the fifth to give USI the lead 5-4. The home runs were Boyd’s third and fourth of the season.
 
Boyd finished the game with a team-best four-for-five at the plate with three runs scored and five RBIs. The four hits, two home runs, and five RBIs were career-highs for Boyd.
 
Bellarmine scored two in the seventh and three in the eighth to lead, 9-6, and set the stage for USI in the ninth.
 
On the mound, senior right-hander Hiroyuki Yamada picked up his first win of the season in relief. Yamada threw one inning, allowing a walk and striking out one.
 
USI freshman right-hander Colin Wolfe started and received a no-decision. The freshman allowed two unearned runs on a hit and three walks over three innings of work.

CONTESSA’S DOUBLE OVERTIME GOAL LEADS THUNDERBOLTS OVER KNOXVILLE IN FINALS OPENER

 Knoxville, Tn.:  Coming back from a 3-2 deficit late in regulation, Scott Kirton scored to force overtime, where Derek Contessa scored 7:07 into the second overtime to win Game One of the President’s Cup Final for Evansville on Wednesday night at Knoxville Civic Coliseum.  The Thunderbolts and Ice Bears will play Game Two at Ford Center on Thursday night at 7:00pm CT.
                In the first period, the Thunderbolts opened the scoring at 6:27, as Tyson Gilmour scored on a rebound from Logan vande Meerakker and Kirton to give Evansville a 1-0 lead.  The Ice Bears came back minutes later to tie, as Dawson McKinney scored on a power play at 9:15.  The Thunderbolts got the lead back at 13:16, as Myles Abbate scored off a deflection of a Benjamin Lindberg shot to give Evansville the lead once again 2-1, also assisted by Isaac Chapman.  However, Knoxville again tied the game as Derek Raposo scored at 15:04 off a face-off, with the game tied 2-2 going into the first intermission.  Knoxville scored the lone goal of the second period despite being outshot 19-4, with McKinney scoring once again off a back-door pass at 4:28, giving the Ice Bears their first lead of the night.  The score remained the same through the second period and for most of the third period, before Scott Kirton scored on a turnaround shot from around the net on a power play with 5:06 remaining in regulation to tie the game 3-3, assisted by Matthew Hobbs and Vande Meerakker.  The Thunderbolts faced danger early in the first overtime, facing two penalties, which they successfully killed to get back to 5-on-5.  Finally, at 7:07 of the second overtime, Contessa scored on a rebound from Chapman and Abbate to win the game for Evansville 4-3, giving Evansville a 1-0 series lead going back to Ford Center on Thursday.
Kirton and Abbate each finished with a goal and assist, Gilmour and Contessa each scored one goal, while Chapman and Vande Meerakker each tallied a pair of assists.  In goal, Cole Ceci finished with 33 saves on 36 shots.  Game Two will be at Ford Center on Thursday at 7:00pm CT, and  Game Three, if necessary, will be played at Knoxville Civic Coliseum on Sunday afternoon, face-off at 2:00pm CT.

Kenton Hargis Announces Departure as UE Senior Director of Admission

EVANSVILLE, IND.  Kenton Hargis has announced his departure from the University of Evansville (UE), effective in August. Hargis, a longtime leader in the Office of Admission and a fixture around UE’s campus, has played a pivotal role in recruiting students and building UE’s reputation over more than a decade. His decision comes as he prepares to dedicate more time to his family and stay home with his two young children.

“Serving the University of Evansville has been the greatest honor of my professional life,” Hargis said. “The students, faculty, staff, administrators, and alumni I’ve met along the way have made this community an incredibly special part of my life. Most of all, I’ve been deeply fortunate to work alongside an admission team whose passion, heart, and unwavering belief in our mission have inspired me every single day. While it’s very difficult to step away from a place and a team I love, I know this is the right decision for my family. I’ll always promote the caring culture for which UE is known-and I’ll forever be a proud Ace.”

A 2006 graduate of UE, Hargis returned to his alma mater in 2010 and quickly became known for his energy, creativity, and deep commitment to the University’s mission. He has led strategic enrollment management efforts, launched innovative initiatives, provided vision throughout the ups and downs of many recruiting cycles, and built lasting relationships across campus and the community. Under his leadership, UE has attracted countless bright and talented students whose lives have been changed and who are going on to make a difference in the world.

Vice President for Enrollment and Marketing Dr. Jill Griffin expressed her gratitude for Hargis’s contributions.

“We’ve all become better from working with Kenton-not only because of his leadership, but because of who he is. He brings out the best in people, inspires action, and never hesitates to lead the charge, even when the hill is steep,” Griffin said. “Kenton’s decision to focus on his family reflects the same values that have defined his leadership at UE-compassion, dedication, and a deep sense of responsibility. While we will miss him tremendously, we know he will embrace this next role with the same heart and purpose that made him such an exceptional colleague and leader at UE.”

Griffin also announced that Kim McDonald, currently Director of Enrollment Marketing and Operations, will continue her current work but also take on tactical leadership of the team as the Director of Admission. A seasoned admission leader, McDonald has been a cornerstone of the recruitment team and provided strong leadership during parental leaves and other transitions.

“Kenton’s leadership has defined what it means to serve with purpose, and his work has directly contributed to UE’s remarkable enrollment growth over the past four years,” Griffin added. “With Kim’s steady leadership and a strong team in place, we are well-positioned for a smooth transition and an exciting future.”

A national search is underway to identify an Assistant Vice President for Admission who will have responsibility for both undergraduate and graduate admission. This will help to enhance recruitment efforts across all areas of the university and ensure a strategic approach to enrollment growth.

 

City of Evansville to Host Summer Resource Fair for Youth and Teens

Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry invites students and families to attend the city’s second annual Summer Resource Fair, a free event designed to connect local youth with enriching opportunities for the summer season. The event will take place Sunday, April 27, 2025, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Pagoda, 401 SE Riverside Dr.

The fair will showcase summer camps, educational and enrichment programs, volunteer opportunities, and summer job prospects available for children and teens across the city. The event aims to keep Evansville’s youth engaged, inspired, and supported throughout the summer months.

“We know how powerful the summer months can be in shaping a child’s future,” said Mayor Stephanie Terry.“Whether it’s through a summer job, an arts program, or a day camp, these experiences help build confidence, foster creativity, and keep our young people connected to their community. This fair is all about giving families easy access to those opportunities.”

Representatives from local youth-serving organizations will be on-site to provide information and answer questions about their summer programs. Attendees can explore options in academics, the arts, athletics, employment, and more—all in one place.

The Summer Activities Fair supports Mayor Terry’s commitment to Youth Development, a key pillar of her administration’s strategic priorities, by ensuring that every young person in Evansville has access to programs that help them learn, grow, and thrive.

Students in grades six through 12 participate in the page program on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays during the legislative session. Groups serve on Wednesdays.
