USI Softball picked to finish third in GLVC

0

University of Southern Indiana Softball has been picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2020 according to the GLVC Preseason Coaches’ Poll that was released by the league office Wednesday afternoon.

The University of Indianapolis (219 points/10 first-place votes), which advanced to the NCAA II Midwest Super Regional a year ago, was the coaches’ favorite to win the GLVC title in 2020, while defending GLVC champion University of Missouri-St. Louis (210/5) was predicted to finish one spot in front of the Screaming Eagles, who received 196 points.

USI, which is tied for No. 21 in the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association Division II Top 25 Preseason Coaches’ Poll is followed by the University of Illinois Springfield (170/1), Maryville University (158), Truman State University (147), Drury University (145), Lindenwood University (128), William Jewell College (95) and Lewis University (90 points).

Bellarmine University (88) was picked to finish 11th, while Quincy University (80), Rockhurst University (68), Missouri University of Science & Technology (55), McKendree University (49) and Southwest Baptist University (22) rounded out the coaches’ predictions.

The Eagles, who finished third in the GLVC standings a year ago, return 12 players and six starters from a squad that was 35-21 overall and 19-7 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play a year ago.

That list includes three-time All-American senior pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt, who enters the season as USI’s all-time leader in wins (76) and strikeouts (711).

In 2019, Leonhardt was named second-team All-America by both the NFCA and D2CCA after earning GLVC Pitcher of the Year honors. The first-team Academic All-American finished the year ranked second in the nation in complete-game shutouts (13), seventh in strikeouts (243), ninth in ERA (1.29), 16th in saves (4) and 25th in wins (21). She also hit .351 with 11 doubles, a triple, one home run and 30 RBIs.

Leonhardt is one of three seniors that 19th-year Head Coach Sue Kunkle will rely on to lead the Eagles into 2020, with the others being outfielder Allison Schubert and shortstop Taylor Ricketts.

Schubert, an All-Midwest Region honoree as a sophomore two years ago, finished the 2019 season with a .274 batting average, five home runs and 21 RBIs. She hit .340 with 14 doubles, 11 home runs and 51 RBIs during USI’s run to the 2018 national title.

Ricketts hit .262 with six doubles, a triple and 12 RBIs a year ago and has been a staple in the Eagles’ defense throughout the last two seasons, having started 119 of USI’s 120 games at shortstop.

USI also will look to All-GLVC junior outfielder Alicia Webb to build upon her breakout season from a year ago. Webb hit .327 with seven doubles, four triples and 21 RBIs as a sophomore in 2019 and hit .345 in GLVC-only games.

Kunkle will rely on her upperclassmen to provide strong leadership to a roster that features six sophomores and seven freshmen.

USI begins the season February 7 when it travels to Harrogate, Tennessee, to take on Lincoln Memorial University in a doubleheader. The Eagles also are slated to play in the University of North Georgia’s Cottrell Foundation Loyal Blue Classic February 14-16 in Dahlonega, Georgia, before hosting the Midwest Region Crossover February 21-23 at Deaconess Sports Park.

Following their annual trip to Florida for The Spring Games March 6-10, the Eagles open their home and GLVC schedule March 14 against the University of Indianapolis, which is ranked No. 12 in the preseason poll.

The Eagles are scheduled to play 16 games at the USI Softball Field in 2020 after going 12-2 on their home diamond in 2019. They are looking for their sixth straight trip to the NCAA II Tournament in 2020 and their seventh in the last eight years.

In addition to the 2018 national championship, Kunkle (548-382-1) has directed USI Softball to seven NCAA II Tournament appearances, the 2018 GLVC Tournament title, 2017 GLVC regular-season title, and the 2017 and 2018 NCAA II Midwest Region championships.

Eagles ranked sixth by GLVC women’s tennis coaches

0

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Tennis was predicted to finish sixth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division in 2020 Thursday afternoon per the league’s preseason coaches poll.

The Screaming Eagles came in fifth in the GLVC East in 2019, coming one match shy of qualifying for the GLVC Tournament, despite accumulating an overall record of 5-15, 1-4 in league play.

Senior duo Lauren Hambrock and Alex Jamison highlight USI’s returners from the 2019 campaign that did not feature any graduating seniors. Hambrock has collected 21 victories in singles action in her career, working almost exclusively in the No. 1 slot since her freshman year while Jamison has amassed 23 career wins overall.

Despite dropping its lone dual match last fall to the University of Charleston (WV), USI found individual success in the Eastern Illinois University Panther Invitational and the USI Invitational. Freshman Kylie Skepnek posted four victories at EIU, including a 3-0 singles mark; Hambrock collected three victories at EIU before leading the Eagles in a dominant showing at the USI Invitational, posting 6-0 overall mark alongside sophomore Shelby Braselton.

With the entrance of Lindenwood University and Southwest Baptist University into the GLVC for the 2019-20 athletic year, there has been a shuffle in the division setup from the 2019 season, where the GLVC East now features eight teams as opposed to six a season ago.

Along with this divisional shift came a new eight-match league slate where the Eagles will do battle with the other seven East division squads, along with the University of Missouri-St. Louis of the West division.

USI Women’s Tennis opens the spring side of the 2019-20 campaign with four straight home matches starting February 7 as the Screaming Eagles welcome the Eastern Michigan University Eagles to the Evansville Tennis Center.

University of Southern Indiana Men’s Tennis was tabbed for a fifth-place finish in the 2020 Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division standings Thursday, per the league’s coaches.

The Screaming Eagles ranked fourth in the GLVC East in 2019, posting an 11-13 record overall, going 2-3 in league action, qualifying for the eight-team GLVC Tournament last season.

Sophomore Marvin Kromer and junior Spencer Blandford represent USI’s leading returners from a year ago. Kromer posted an overall singles record of 14-8, including a 9-3 record in the third slot. Blandford went 15-5 in singles No. 4 last season en route to a 16-7 overall mark.

USI participated in two individual tournaments last fall, finding success at the Eastern Illinois University Panther Invite. Over the two-day event the Eagles collected 26 victories with freshmen Preston Cameron and Lucas Sakamaki walking away as champions in their respective flights. Kromer and Blandford teamed up to post a perfect slate in doubles action.

With the entrance of Lindenwood University and Southwest Baptist University into the GLVC for the 2019-20 athletic year, there has been a shuffle in the division setup from the 2019 season, where the GLVC East now features eight teams as opposed to six a season ago.

Along with this divisional shift came a new nine-match league slate where the Eagles will do battle with the other seven East division squads, along with Drury University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis of the West division.
