Ivy Tech Offers CDL Program at Perry County Port Authority

The Ivy Tech Truck Driving School is now open for enrollment for individuals living in the Perry County region. Students can earn their CDL in four weeks. Next class begins Feb. 3. Additional classes planned.

Tuition includes 160+ hours of instruction and drive time, materials, drug screen, Department of Transportation physical, and CDL Class A License testing. 

“Ivy Tech is excited to offer this opportunity locally,” said Kyla Dowell, executive director of Ivy Tech’s Workforce Development. “With hundreds of local haul and over-the-road driving positions going unfilled in the area, Ivy Tech is offering this program to serve this major local need.”

Cost for the program is $4,100. Payment options include self-pay and third-party pay via employer sponsorship, grant funding, Veterans Affairs, WorkOne and other sources. Individuals must be 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license to enroll. The school is Veterans Affairs approved. Full funding may be available to those who qualify through WorkOne.

Men’s basketball ready for Wednesday contest against Drake

UE has won last seven home games against Bulldogs

With several positives to take away from Saturday’s game against Missouri State, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team has its sights set on Wednesday’s 6 p.m. contest against Drake inside the Ford Center.  Tickets are still available and fans out of town can follow via ESPN+ and the Purple Aces Radio Network.

 Setting the Scene

– UE looks for its 8th consecutive home victory over the Bulldogs; last season, the Aces faced Drake in the MVC opener and finished the night with an 82-77 double overtime victory

– Home court advantage between the squads has been pivotal in recent years with the home team winning 14 of the last 15 contests; the only road team to pick up a win since February of 2012 was Evansville, who earned an 80-74 win at the Knapp Center in 2016

– Last year’s home win saw K.J. Riley post what was at the time a career high; he scored 25 points while hitting 13 out of 17 free throw tries

– In Saturday’s game against MSU, Evansville’s offense ended a 2-game stretch of scoring 44 points or fewer, finishing with 58 tallies

Last Time Out

– It was a tale of two halves on Saturday with the Aces holding a 35-30 halftime lead before Missouri State rallied back to outscore the Aces by a 38-23 total in the final 20 minutes to take a 68-58 win

– Ball control was a pivotal stat in the game – in the first half, UE recorded eight assists and three turnovers – the final 20 minutes saw the Aces credited with two helpers and 10 turnovers

– K.J. Riley had his best conference outing since Jan. 2, 2019 as he totaled 21 points; Riley was 7-of-14 from the field and knocked down all six free throw tries

Returning to Form

– In Saturday’s game against Missouri State, senior K.J. Riley recorded 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting while adding six free throws

– It marked Riley’s first 20-point game since scoring 36 points against Morgan State in November

– The final tally was Riley’s second-best conference game in his 3-year career; his top output was 25 points in last season’s MVC opener against Drake

– Riley continues to rank in the top 25 nationally in free throw makes and attempts while connecting on 27 out of 35 free throws in the last five games

Improving Each Day

– Sophomore Jawaun Newton chipped in a total of 12 rebounds over the last two games for the Aces

– In his first 15 games of the 2019-20 season, Newton posted a total of 30 boards, an average of 2.0 per game

– That average jumps to 6.0 over his last two outings.  He had a career mark of seven rebounds at Indiana State with five coming on the offensive end

– Over his final four non-conference outings, Newton did not play more than 12 minutes but in his last five contests, Newton has played at least 14 minutes while averaging over 17 minutes

Scouting the Opponent

– Drake owns a 13-6 record through their first 19 games and have split their first six conference games with a 3-3 mark

– The Bulldogs excel at home, posting a perfect 10-0 record, but are 1-5 in road games

– Liam Robbins paces the team with 13.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 50 blocked shots on the season

– Sunday’s game at Southern Illinois saw Robbins add 17 points and 10 rebounds, both team bests, in a 66-49 loss at the Banterra Center

– Roman Penn averages 11.7 points and a team-high 114 assists; he is a 51.6% shooter

USI finishes homestand with Truman State and Quincy Military Appreciation Day is Saturday

University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball finishes its three-game homestand Thursday and Saturday when it hosts Truman State University and Quincy University at Screaming Eagles Arena. Tip off Thursday versus Truman State is 7:30 p.m., while start time Saturday versus Quincy is 3:15 p.m.

USI will host its seventh annual Hoops for Troops Military Appreciation game Saturday to honor members of the United States Armed Forces when the Eagles host Quincy. Veterans, military personnel and their guests will receive up to five free tickets per veteran to the games with their military identification or proof of service at the front of the Screaming Eagles Arena ticket window. This event is sponsored by the American Legion Post 324 and the USI Student Veteran Association.

USI Men’s Basketball Week 10 Quick Notes:

USI wins third-straight to open homestand. USI extended its winning streak to three games with a 72-69 homestand opening win over McKendree University. USI had four players in double-digits, led by junior forward Emmanuel Little with 21 points. Junior guard/forward Clayton Hughes and senior guard Joe Laravie followed with 13 points each, while junior guard Mateo Rivera rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points.

USI in the GLVC. While the Eagles rose into a tie for sixth in the GLVC standings and two games out of fourth, USI climbed to sixth in the GLVC point standings that determine the qualifiers for the conference post-season tournament. The top eight in the point standings qualify for the GLVC Tournament in March.

Leading the Eagles in 2019-20. Junior forward Emmanuel Little leads four USI players averaging in double-digits with 15.9 points per game with junior forward Josh Price following with 13.4 points per outing. Little also leads the team with 7.6 rebounds, while Price follows with 7.5 per contest. Junior guard Mateo Rivera and senior guard Joe Laravie close out the USI double-figure scorers in 2019-20 with 11.9 and 11.7 points per game.

Little closing on 1,000 points. Junior forward Emmanuel Little is closing in on 1,000 points. He has 941 during his two-plus seasons. USI has had 20 1,000-point scorers in the history of the program. The junior forward also has moved into the top 10 in rebounding this season, ranking eighth with 591 boards.

USI leaders at home. Junior forward Emmanuel Little is USI’s top scorer at home with 16.6 points per game. Little is followed by junior forward Josh Price with 15.8 points per contest, while junior guard Mateo Rivera and senior guard Joe Laravie are posting 11.9 and 11.7 points per contest at home, respectively.

USI vs. Truman State. USI leads the all-time series versus Truman State University, 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the GLVC, after the only meeting last year in the Physical Activities Center, 80-65. USI also held a 5-0 series lead in the PAC. Junior forward Emmanuel Little and senior guard/forward Kobe Caldwell had 13 points each in the 2018-19 meeting, following guard Alex Stein’s team-best 25 points.

Truman State in 2019-20. The Bulldogs of Truman State enter Thursday’s game tied for second in the GLVC standings and fourth in the GLVC point standings with an 11-5 overall record, 7-1 in the league. Truman State won its last outing over Quincy University, 84-70, on the road.

USI vs. Quincy. USI leads the all-time series versus Quincy University, 32-10, after winning, 78-56, at the Physical Activities Center in 2018-19. The Eagles have had the advantage at home, 20-4, and in the GLVC, 30-8. Guard Alex Stein led USI in the 2018-19 victory with 19 points, while junior forward Emmanuel Little had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Quincy in 2019-20. The Quincy Hawks start the weekend 10-6 overall and 4-4 in the GLVC after falling to Truman State Monday. Quincy had won four-straight before the loss on Monday and visits McKendree Thursday before coming to USI.

AG Curtis Hill continues efforts to protect unborn children with Down syndrome

Attorney General Curtis Hill has filed a second amicus brief supporting the constitutionality of an Ohio law prohibiting medical providers from performing abortions sought specifically because unborn children have Down syndrome.

Previously, Attorney General Hill filed an amicus brief asking the full 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals to consider this matter after a three-judge panel upheld an injunction against the law. Now that the whole court has agreed to hear the case, Attorney General Hill is asking it to reverse a lower court’s ruling that the Ohio law is unconstitutional.

“The authority to prevent the spread of abortion as a tool for eugenics is a compelling state interest that Indiana, Kentucky, and other states have asserted via anti-discrimination laws similar to the Ohio law at issue here,” Attorney General Hill said. “Subject in some states to court rulings, 11 states have enacted a variety of statutes precluding abortions based solely on discrimination against the fetus, such as on grounds of race, sex, or disability.”

Eugenics is defined as “the science of improving a human population by controlled breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristics.” Historically, the concept has been used to justify vile and grisly acts. The United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has stated that disability-selective abortions “perpetuate notions of stereotyping disability as incompatible with a good life.”

“Permitting abortion on the basis of an unborn child’s disability not only denies equal human worth but also gradually eliminates certain categories of the disabled from society,” Attorney General Hill said. “Iceland has reached a nearly 100 percent elimination rate for babies with Down syndrome. The United States and other developed countries are not far behind.”

The amicus brief, co-led by Indiana and Kentucky, is also joined by 16 other states.

The three-judge panel misinterpreted U.S. Supreme Court precedents, Attorney General Hill said, when it invalidated the Ohio law based on the erroneous understanding that Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey established a “categorical” right to abortion.

“The Supreme Court has never extended the holding of Roe or Casey to apply when a woman is willing to bear a child but wishes to terminate her pregnancy because she finds a particular child unacceptable,” Attorney General Hill said.

Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to consider an Indiana anti-eugenics law invalidated by the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. Yet, in a concurring opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas offered a compelling 20-page analysis detailing the historical link between abortion and the progressive movement’s goal of creating a more desirable human population. “Given the potential for abortion to become a tool of eugenic manipulation,” Justice Thomas wrote, “the Court will soon need to confront the constitutionality of laws like Indiana’s. . . . With today’s prenatal screening tests and other technologies, abortion can easily be used to eliminate children with unwanted characteristics.”

Todd Lickliter Named New Head Men’s Basketball Coach At UE

Aces Add Former National Coach Of The Year

 EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville has announced the hiring of former National Coach of the Year Todd Lickliter as head coach of the Purple Aces men’s basketball team.  Lickliter inked a multiyear deal with the university and will assume the position immediately.  He will be on the sideline when the Aces face Drake on Wednesday evening.

“My family and I are excited to have the opportunity to rejoin the Evansville community,” Lickliter said.  “I am humbled by the chance to lead the Purple Aces program and thankful to reunite with this outstanding group of student-athletes.  It is a privilege to be a part of a program with a rich history and tradition.”

Lickliter is familiar with the Evansville program and players after spending the 2018-19 season as an assistant coach.  He took an active role in coaching a young Aces squad last season.  Facing a great deal of turnover while assisting the staff in the implementation of a new system, Lickliter helped guide Evansville to the best record for a first-year staff since 1978.  The Aces began Missouri Valley Conference play with a double-overtime win against Drake before earning their most decisive win of the season when they defeated defending Final Four participant Loyola by a 67-48 final at the Ford Center.

As the head coach at Butler University from 2001 through 2007, Lickliter brought record-breaking success to the Bulldog program.  In his first season at the helm, he directed the team to a then-school record of 26 victories and its third Horizon League regular-season championship in a row.  His squad also reached the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time in 53 years.  Lickliter’s success only got better as he led Butler to a pair of Sweet 16 appearances in 2003 and 2007. In 2007, his team fell to eventual National Champion Florida by just eight points.

Over his first two seasons at the helm of the Bulldog squad, Lickliter won a total of 53 games.  It marked the third-most wins in NCAA history by a men’s head coach in the first two years of work, trailing only Bill Guthridge (58 wins) of North Carolina and NC State’s Everett Case, who posted 55 wins.

His top honor came in 2007 as he was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) National Coach of the Year.  CollegeHoops.net named him as the High-Major Coach of the Year that same season.  He left the program with the top three single-season win totals in school history.  Lickliter became the head coach at the University of Iowa in 2007 and led the program at Marian University in 2012.  In his second season with the Knights, he led them to the most conference wins in school history along with the #1 scoring defense in NAIA Division II.  After leaving Marian, he joined the Boston Celtics as a scout.

Prior to assuming the head coaching position at Butler, Lickliter worked two stints as an assistant at Butler while serving as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan from 1997-99.  In his initial period at Butler, Lickliter worked with his college coach – Joe Sexson for the 1988-89 campaign and returned to the program from 1999 through 2001, working with Barry Collier and Thad Matta.  At EMU, he assisted on the 1998 team that won the Mid-American Conference Championship behind future NBA star Earl Boykins.

The 1979 graduate of Butler University is a native of Indianapolis, where he played for his father Arlan at North Central High School.  He played one season at Central Florida before transferring to Butler.  Todd and wife Joez have three sons – Ry, Garrett, and John.
