“Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” APRIL 21, 2020

“Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” was created because we have a couple of commenters that post on a daily basis either in our “IS IT TRUE” or “Readers Forum” columns concerning National or International issues.
The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give our more opinionated readers exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and Middle Jab and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “LEFT JAB” is a liberal view, “MIDDLE JAB” is the libertarian view and the “RIGHT JAB is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments in this column is free to do so.

EPA Expands Research on COVID-19 in the Environment

0
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) continues to make COVID-19 issues a top priority. The Agency has been actively supporting response efforts across the country to protect public health. As part of these efforts, EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler is asking for a rapid review with the Science Advisory Board (SAB) to provide feedback on research needs identified by EPA’s researchers. This research will enhance and build on the Agency’s capabilities to address the environmental and human health impacts from the virus that causes COVID-19.

“EPA’s world-class researchers are building on their already expansive body of knowledge to help mitigate the environmental and public health impacts from COVID-19,” said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. “Our scientists have identified a number of research areas to focus on to further help combat and diminish the spread of COVID-19 including environmental cleanup and disinfection techniques, virus behavior in wastewater and the air, and procedures for disinfecting personal protective equipment.”

A Federal Register Notice (FRN) notifying the SAB of the charge questions and the two public meetings will be published this week. Comments from the SAB will inform and help guide the Agency as it enhances its capabilities to address the environmental and human health impacts from COVID-19.

Current EPA Research on the virus that causes COVID-19

Funded primarily through the 2020 Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, EPA researchers have already begun increasing the Agency’s knowledge. For example, we have begun evaluating disinfectant efficacy on different types of surfaces in public areas that are frequently touched by multiple people, such as in subway cars.

In addition, EPA researchers are collaborating with CDC researchers in several other areas, such as:

  • Environmental Cleanup and Disinfection: The researchers are currently evaluating the use of ultraviolet (UV), ozone, and steam as solutions for large-scale disinfecting needs; for example in a school or an office. The researchers are also evaluating whether electrostatic sprayers and foggers used with EPA-approved disinfectants can be effective at killing the virus.
  • Wastewater Virus Detection: The researchers are studying whether SARS-CoV-2 can be detected in wastewater at levels that could inform public health strategies. They will focus on understanding viral loads, or how much of the virus is present, whether it is in an infectious state, and how it moves through the wastewater system. This information will help public health agencies by acting as an early warning system and can identify if there is an outbreak in a specific community. Public health agencies can then take early action to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
  • Salivary Antibody Assay Development: The researchers are developing an easy, non-invasive, and reliable antibody assay to help determine the true infection rate across the country.

EPA researchers are some of the leading experts in their fields and are working hard to protect public health and the environment. This is just a small sampling of the work they intend to complet

OBITUARY OF JOHN DAVID ENGELBRECHT

OBITUARY OF JOHN DAVID ENGELBRECHT

Evansville – John D. Engelbrecht, 68, of Evansville, IN, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 18, 2020, at Deaconess Midtown from a massive heart attack. John was born June 12, 1951, in Evansville to the late John A. and Bettie Ann (Groves) Engelbrecht.

Until his death, John was Chairman of South Central Inc (SCI) and was the epitome of a local entrepreneur and businessman. He took over the reins as CEO of SCI at age 23 after his father, John A., passed away unexpectedly. Under his leadership, SCI grew from a small, Evansville based company into a thriving business with a nationwide footprint with diverse business holdings.

John’s opportunistic nature and strong leadership allowed him to expand the family business greatly from its start as a radio and television broadcasting company to a diversified holding company that also encapsulated financial services, low voltage contracting, real estate, addiction treatment centers, and a myriad of digital media services. He retired as CEO in 2008, whereupon his son, JP, took over as the 3rd generation leader of SCI.

Beyond his extensive business accomplishments, John relished living and being involved in the Evansville community. He truly believed in being a steward of the assets of SCI to serve the Evansville region, often saying he wanted to bring money back home to Indiana. Countless organizations across the Evansville region benefited from his donations of millions of dollars in cash and services during his life. Further, John dedicated much of his time and energy as a director for Citizens Bank, Vectren, Deaconess Hospital, WNIN, and the Evansville Museum of Arts, History, and Sciences.

John received many accolades over the years. Notable public honors include being inducted into the Junior Achievement Evansville Business Hall of Fame in 2014 and receiving the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb in 2018. However, John’s greatest honor was bestowed on him by his children and grandchildren when they called him Papa.

John loved the Catholic Church and was a member of St Mary Catholic Church in downtown Evansville. He was a proud graduate of both Reitz High School (1969) and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville (1973).

He is survived by his wife, Stephanie (Mosbacher) Engelbrecht; son, JP (Allison) Engelbrecht; daughters, Elizabeth (Jeff) Cox and Nora (Engelbrecht) Ferguson; grandchildren, Ellie, Will, and Anna Engelbrecht, Myles Frazier, Sullivan, Riley, Caroline, Marilyn, and Robert Cox, and Theodore, John, and Henry Ferguson.

Due to the current pandemic, there will be a private family service with Fr. Benny Chacko officiating. Arrangements will be handled by Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Avenue, Evansville, IN 47714.

A private burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Evansville Museum of Arts, History, and Sciences, 411 SE Riverside Drive, Evansville, IN 47713.

Condolences may be made online at www.ziemerfuneralhome.com.

“IS IT TRUE” APRIL 20, 2020

11

We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?

IS IT TRUE one of the major reasons why small home owned and homegrown Ma and Pa businesses weren’t able to take advantage of the billions of dollars from the business bailout programs was because the Washington D. C. fat cats have seemly taken care of their political buddies first?

IS IT TRUE we find it interesting that Ruth Chris a renowned Steak House that made a $42 million dollar profit last year was able to acquire a $20 million stimulus package grant/loan from the government while many thousands of homegrown businesses stimulus package requests were rejected?

IS IT TRUE much of the $350 billion in the Small Business Administration’s emergency coronavirus relief fund was effectively spoken for within the first five (5) minutes of launch?

IS IT TRUE that the Paycheck Protection Program funds ran dry after less than two weeks, only 27,000 loans had ultimately been approved?

IS IT TRUE it’s now projected that the Coronovirus will hit its peak in Indiana between the last week of April or during the first couple of weeks of May 2020?

IS IT TRUE that we need to TEST and TRACE and TREAT in order to defeat the COVID -19 virus?

IS IT TRUE that 328 million people are living in America?  …approximately 1 1/2 percent of Americans have been tested for the COVIS-19 virus so far?  …that 746,379 Americans have tested positive with the COVID -19 virus?  …that 41,379 Americans have died from the COVID-19 virus?

IS IT TRUE that Vanderburgh County has 85 confirmed cases of the COVID -19 virus and Warrick County has 58 cases?  …that statewide there are 11,210 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus?  …as of yesterday, Indiana has conducted a disappointing 61,142 COVID-19 virus tests so far?  …the population of Indiana is around 6.8 million people? …that 562 Hoosiers have died with the COVID -19 virus?

IS IT TRUE we urge you to ask our elected official in Vanderburgh County what percentage of our residents have been tested for the COVID-19 virus?  …we predict all you will hear from the majority of them is the sound of crickets?  …we predict that the only elected officials in our county that can give you the answer are Mayor Winnecke and County Commissioners Musgrave, Shoulders and Hatfield?  …this the reason why we keep urging our state and local Health Department officials to continue to TEST and TRACE and TREAT?

IS IT TRUE we are told that elected officials are now spinning the story that the City of Evansville has lost $2.8 million dollars since the COVID-19 virus hit?  …we have a gut feeling that some of the city budgets were already overspent long before the virus hit Evansville because of elected officials deficit spending habits?

IS IT TRUE during the 2020 budget hearing the Mayor upset a couple of City Council members when he left his funding requests for the Penguin Zoo exhibit intact?

IS IT TRUE we remember when former City Councilman and Finance Chairmen John Friend, CPA urged Mayor Winnecke to set aside around $3 million dollars in a “Rainy Day Fund”? …we are sorry to report that Mayor Winnecke didn’t heed Mr. Friend sound financial advice?

IS IT TRUE our medical heroes stay at work to help us?  …please stay home to help them?

IS IT TRUE that having a good tomorrow is for the people who prepare for it today?

IS IT TRUE we would like to give five (5) cheers to Amy and Jim Beck and Belcher Flooring for providing lunch to the Cath Lab employees that work at a local hospital?  …thanks also are given to Amanda Goldsberry Giles and Amy Word-Smith owner of Lamasco Bar and Grill for delivering and preparing the lunches for our medical heroes?

IS IT TRUE we also would like to thank Vanderburgh County Commissioner Ben Shoulders for sponsoring around 6 Food Trucks to serve food to our first responders, county road employees, medical heroes, and children living in the economically disadvantaged areas of our community?

IS IT TRUE if you or your friends would like for Lamasco Bar and Grill to organize breakfast, lunch or dinner for our essential front line medical heroes at an affordable price please contact Amy Word-Smith by calling her 812-480-0323?

IS IT TRUE thank Steve Hammer, Doros Hadjisavva, Alexander Burrton and the Junior League for delivering hundreds of foods to people living in low-income areas multiple times a week?

IS IT TRUE when the people fear the Government we have Tyranny!  When the government fears the people we have Liberty?

IS IT TRUE our “READERS POLLS” are non-scientific but trendy?
Today’s “Readers Poll” question is: WHEN DO YOU FEEL THAT VANDERBURGH COUNTY SHOULD BE RE-OPENED FOR BUSINESS?
Please take time and read our articles entitled “STATEHOUSE FILES, LAW ENFORCEMENT, “READERS POLL”, BIRTHDAYS, HOT JOBS”, EDUCATION, OBITUARIES and “LOCAL SPORTS”.
