Screening Hoosier Babies For life-Threatening Disease

Screening Hoosier Babies For life-Threatening Disease

by Wendy McNamara

Early detection is critical to treating many diseases. Under legislation I supported, newborn babies would be screened for the rare genetic disease, Adrenoleukodystrophy.

Adrenoleukodystrophy, or ALD, is a deadly disease that causes irreversible damage to the brain and leads to behavioral and neurological issues. ALD affects approximately 1 in 17,000 people and without early testing, families often don’t learn their child has the disease until it has progressed too far.

By catching and treating ALD early, Hoosier babies will have a greater chance to live long and healthy lives.

Indiana’s newborn screening panel already tests for over 50 other conditions, such as sickle cell anemia and critical congenital heart disease.

If signed into law, Indiana’s newborn screening panel would include every test on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ recommended newborn screening panel.

In addition, the Forensics Investigation concentration is one of the more unique aspects of OCU’s Criminal Justice Program.”

Dr. Ron D. Last Time Out

– A hot-shooting UNI squad finished at 62.7% on Wednesday to take an 84-64 win over the Purple Aces at the McLeod Center

– The Panthers led by 13 at the half before UE rallied to cut the deficit to six in the early moments of the second period

– The Panthers were able to slowly pull away to clinch a perfect home record on the season

– Jawaun Newton and Evan Kuhlman led the way with 13 points apiece

– Newton’s final tally marked his career high; he hit six of his ten attempts and had five boards

– Kuhlman knocked down three out of five triples while dishing out four assists

– Through his first 17 games of the season, Newton scored six points just three times

– Over his first 48 college contests, Newton did not reach double figures in points, but has done so in five of his last nine games

– Keith Fisher III has a team-high 5.9 rebounds per game

OLD NATIONAL EVENTS PLAZA – WEDNESDAY, JULY 29th

TICKETS GO ON SALE FRIDAY, MARCH 6TH AT 10 AM

Styx is coming to Evansville, IN at the Old National Events Plaza on Wednesday, July 29th, 2020. Tickets start at $39.00 plus applicable fees and go on-sale Friday, March 6th at 10AM.

About Styx:

The six men comprising Styx have committed to rocking the Paradise together with audiences far and wide by entering their second decade of averaging over 100 shows a year, and each one of them is committed to making the next show better than the last. Styx draws from over four decades of barnburning chart hits, joyous singalongs, and hard-driving deep cuts. Like a symphony that builds to a satisfying crescendo, a Styx set covers a wide range of stylistic cornerstones. From the progressively sweeping splendor that is “The Grand Illusion” to the hunker-down fortitude of all that is the “Blue Collar Man,” from the majestic spiritual love for a special “Lady” to the seething indictment of preening, primping pageantry for pageantry’s sake of “Miss America,” from an individual yearning for true connection as a “Man in the Wilderness” to a soul-deep quest to achieve what’s at the heart of one’s personal vision in “Crystal Ball,” from the regal reach-for-the-stars bravado of “Come Sail Away” to the grainy all-in gallop of that rugged “Renegade” who had it made, the band draws on an unlimited cache of ways to immerse one’s mind and body in their signature sound.

Styx hit its stride with guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw’s first LP with the band, 1976’s Crystal Ball, and then they become the first group to score four triple-platinum albums in a row: The Grand Illusion (1977), Pieces of Eight (1978), Cornerstone (1979), and Paradise Theater (1981). Over the ensuing decade, Styx weathered the shifting winds of the public’s musical taste, reconvening for a highly successful 1996 Return to Paradise tour that was expertly documented on both CD and DVD in 1997. With a little help from their many friends in Cleveland’s Contemporary Youth Orchestra, One With Everything (2006) became a hybrid orchestral rock blend for the ages. And on The Grand Illusion / Pieces of Eight Live (2011), the band performed at its peak when tackling every track from a pair of their finest triple-platinum albums back to back. Not only that, but the band re-recorded two discs’ worth of its classic material with much finesse and musculature, aptly known as Regeneration Volume I & II (2011 & 2012). Observes Tommy, “Now you have something you can take home with you and go, ‘Yeah, that’s the band I saw last night.’ ”

After more than a decade together on the road, this incarnation of Styx is looking forward to performing as many shows as it can as long as it can. “It all comes back to the chemistry,” says bassist/vocalist Ricky Phillips. “The legacy of this band will be that it brought joy to millions of people,” notes drummer Todd Sucherman. Observes keyboardist/vocalist Lawrence Gowan, “We’ve always tried to explain why this is this happening. It’s obviously a multitude of factors, but the main one is that our show is really good! And if it’s really good, they’re going to come to see it again.” Styx hopes it’s a wave that never crests. “Every night, we go on that magic carpet ride together,” observes original bassist Chuck Panozzo, who joins the band on tour as often as he can. “Music is this amazing force that comes from a higher place. I’m humbled for this band to have the great success that it has,” says co-founding guitarist/vocalist James “JY” Young. “We just want to keep on doing this,” asserts Tommy. “We want to let life take its course and let this music continue to be the soundtrack to it. And this band will continue to evolve as long as we live and play this music.” The jig is up, the news is out: The Esprit de Styx is alive and well, and now it’s time to see for yourself. Welcome to the Grand Evolution.

AG Curtis Hill announces support for $1.6 billion settlement framework with opioid manufacturer

0

Attorney General Curtis Hill is supporting a global settlement framework agreement between state attorneys general, other governmental units and drugmaker Mallinckrodt (MNK), its subsidiaries and certain other affiliates.

As part of the framework, MNK — currently the largest generic opioid manufacturer in the United States — agrees to pay $1.6 billion to a trust that will cover the costs of opioid addiction treatment and related efforts, with the potential for increased payment to the trust. MNK also agrees that its future generic opioid business will be subject to stringent injunctive relief that, among other things, will prevent marketing and ensure systems are in place to prevent diversion. The agreement is intended to settle opioid-related claims against the company.

“This agreement is an important step toward providing relief to Hoosiers hurt by the exploding opioid crisis,” Attorney General Hill said. “My office will work tirelessly to ensure that Indiana continues to receive the resources necessary to deal with the tragic fallout of drug abuse and addiction.”

Attorney General Hill has been active in investigating and pursuing solutions against bad actors involved in this unprecedented crisis. In November 2018, Attorney General Hill filed a lawsuit against Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of OxyContin. The lawsuit alleged that Purdue Pharma intentionally understated the dangerous health risks of long-term opioid use and deceptively marketed their drugs in a way that violated Indiana law.

Attorney General Hill also filed a lawsuit in May 2019 against individual members of the Sackler family, which controlled the majority of Purdue Pharma’s board of directors from 1990 through 2018.

Purdue Pharma declared bankruptcy in September 2019 after an onslaught of lawsuits, including Indiana’s litigation. Indiana is actively involved in the bankruptcy proceeding to ensure that it receives any funds to which it is entitled under the law.

In October 2019, Attorney General Hill filed a lawsuit against three primary distributors of opioids: Cardinal Health, McKesson Corp. and AmerisourceBergen Drug Corp. Attorney General Hill alleged in the lawsuit that the distributors played an integral role in the explosion of the opioid crisis and profited from that role.

“Opioid manufacturers and distributors must be held accountable for their roles in this crisis, which has led to deadly consequences,” Attorney General Hill said.

Opioids are a class of drugs that include prescription painkillers and illegal drugs such as heroin. Nationwide, prescription and illegal opioids are the main cause of drug overdose deaths. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, opioids were involved in more than 47,600 overdose deaths in 2017. From 1999 to 2017, more than 702,000 people have died from a drug overdose.
