“Power to the People” Film Festival To Showcase Films Of African American Activism

The University of Southern Indiana Africana Studies Program presents the first annual Africana Film Festival. The theme for the series is “Power to the People” and will showcase films that highlight African American activism from the 1960s Civil Rights Movement to today. The films will include:

  • Free Angela and All Political Prisoners (2012), directed by Shola Lynch
    6 p.m. on Thursday, January 30
    Followed by a discussion led by Dr. Denise Lynn, director of Gender Studies
  • Malcolm X (1992), directed by Spike Lee
    5 p.m. on Thursday, February 27
    Followed by a discussion by Dr. D’Angelo Taylor, assistant director of the USI Multicultural Center
  • The Hate U Give (2018), directed by George Tillman, Jr.

 Last day to declare candidacy for 2020 Primary is Noon Friday February 7, 2020
Friday February 7, 2020 (Noon) is the last day a declaration of candidacy for major political party primary nomination (or election as a Republican Party precinct committeeman, or state convention delegate of either major party at the primary) may be filed. Candidates for precinct committeeman must be a Qualified Elector of the precinct and a Qualified Primary Republican (or obtain authorization from the County Chairman). Candidates for precinct committeeman must file a CAN-37 form with the county clerk  no later noon Friday, February 7, 2020.  Form CAN-37  can be found on the Secretary of State Election Division’s Candidate Information web page.
Republican State Convention Delegate Candidates must be a resident of the Election District and a Qualified Primary Republican. A declaration of candidacy for election as a state convention delegate (form CAN-37) must be filed with the county election board no than noon February 7, 2020. All delegates will be assessed a $100 fee payable to the Indiana Republican State Committee to help defer State Convention costs.

2020 State of the State Address

On January 14, 2020, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb delivered his fourth State of the State address. He described extensive progress on some of Indiana’s greatest challenges, while also detailing bold ideas on what’s next for Indiana.
The speech was focused on Putting People First – including our kids, teachers, veterans, patients, workers and offenders returning to society.

Statement from State Sen. Jim Tomes in response to  Gov. Eric Holcomb’s State of the State address:

 “It’s up to Indiana’s elected officials, at every level, to work in the best interest of the people and create a better state for future generations. I look forward to working with the governor and my colleagues in the General Assembly to accomplish this. Gov. Holcomb laid out his vision for the future of Indiana and listed several key components that will allow our state to continue to improve, including an increased focus on health care cost transparency and protecting consumers from surprise medical billing.

“One of the most impressive accomplishments under Gov. Holcomb’s leadership is the economic growth our state has seen, especially when you look at the number of jobs committed to our state. In 2019 alone, businesses announced plans to create more than 27,000 jobs and invest more than $8.4 billion, including:

· Allison Transmission, more than 300 committed jobs and $400 million investment;
· Cummins, more than $30 million expansion;
· Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles, expected upwards of 1,000 new jobs and $400 million investment; and

· PharmaCord, more than 850 new jobs committed.

“Additionally, I was pleased to hear the governor’s plan to open the first facility in the country to bring together everything our veterans need – Veterans Affairs, the Disabled American Veterans, Indiana Veterans Initiative, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion – all under one roof. These policies will continue to move our state in the right direction.”

 The 2020 Congress of Counties is a two-day training and networking conference for Republican Party leaders, candidates and grassroots activists . This year’s Congress of Counties is scheduled for January 31 – February 1 in downtown Indianapolis at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Ivy Tech Offers CDL Program at Perry County Port Authority

The Ivy Tech Truck Driving School is now open for enrollment for individuals living in the Perry County region. Students can earn their CDL in four weeks. Next class begins Feb. 3. Additional classes planned.

Tuition includes 160+ hours of instruction and drive time, materials, drug screen, Department of Transportation physical, and CDL Class A License testing. 

“Ivy Tech is excited to offer this opportunity locally,” said Kyla Dowell, executive director of Ivy Tech’s Workforce Development. “With hundreds of local haul and over-the-road driving positions going unfilled in the area, Ivy Tech is offering this program to serve this major local need.”

Cost for the program is $4,100. Payment options include self-pay and third-party pay via employer sponsorship, grant funding, Veterans Affairs, WorkOne and other sources. Individuals must be 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license to enroll. The school is Veterans Affairs approved. Full funding may be available to those who qualify through WorkOne.

Men’s basketball ready for Wednesday contest against Drake

UE has won last seven home games against Bulldogs

With several positives to take away from Saturday’s game against Missouri State, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team has its sights set on Wednesday’s 6 p.m. contest against Drake inside the Ford Center.  Tickets are still available and fans out of town can follow via ESPN+ and the Purple Aces Radio Network.

 Setting the Scene

– UE looks for its 8th consecutive home victory over the Bulldogs; last season, the Aces faced Drake in the MVC opener and finished the night with an 82-77 double overtime victory

– Home court advantage between the squads has been pivotal in recent years with the home team winning 14 of the last 15 contests; the only road team to pick up a win since February of 2012 was Evansville, who earned an 80-74 win at the Knapp Center in 2016

– Last year’s home win saw K.J. Riley post what was at the time a career high; he scored 25 points while hitting 13 out of 17 free throw tries

– In Saturday’s game against MSU, Evansville’s offense ended a 2-game stretch of scoring 44 points or fewer, finishing with 58 tallies

Last Time Out

– It was a tale of two halves on Saturday with the Aces holding a 35-30 halftime lead before Missouri State rallied back to outscore the Aces by a 38-23 total in the final 20 minutes to take a 68-58 win

– Ball control was a pivotal stat in the game – in the first half, UE recorded eight assists and three turnovers – the final 20 minutes saw the Aces credited with two helpers and 10 turnovers

– K.J. Riley had his best conference outing since Jan. 2, 2019 as he totaled 21 points; Riley was 7-of-14 from the field and knocked down all six free throw tries

Returning to Form

– In Saturday’s game against Missouri State, senior K.J. Riley recorded 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting while adding six free throws

– It marked Riley’s first 20-point game since scoring 36 points against Morgan State in November

– The final tally was Riley’s second-best conference game in his 3-year career; his top output was 25 points in last season’s MVC opener against Drake

– Riley continues to rank in the top 25 nationally in free throw makes and attempts while connecting on 27 out of 35 free throws in the last five games

Improving Each Day

– Sophomore Jawaun Newton chipped in a total of 12 rebounds over the last two games for the Aces

– In his first 15 games of the 2019-20 season, Newton posted a total of 30 boards, an average of 2.0 per game

– That average jumps to 6.0 over his last two outings.  He had a career mark of seven rebounds at Indiana State with five coming on the offensive end

– Over his final four non-conference outings, Newton did not play more than 12 minutes but in his last five contests, Newton has played at least 14 minutes while averaging over 17 minutes

Scouting the Opponent

– Drake owns a 13-6 record through their first 19 games and have split their first six conference games with a 3-3 mark

– The Bulldogs excel at home, posting a perfect 10-0 record, but are 1-5 in road games

– Liam Robbins paces the team with 13.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 50 blocked shots on the season

– Sunday’s game at Southern Illinois saw Robbins add 17 points and 10 rebounds, both team bests, in a 66-49 loss at the Banterra Center

– Roman Penn averages 11.7 points and a team-high 114 assists; he is a 51.6% shooter

USI finishes homestand with Truman State and Quincy Military Appreciation Day is Saturday

University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball finishes its three-game homestand Thursday and Saturday when it hosts Truman State University and Quincy University at Screaming Eagles Arena. Tip off Thursday versus Truman State is 7:30 p.m., while start time Saturday versus Quincy is 3:15 p.m.

USI will host its seventh annual Hoops for Troops Military Appreciation game Saturday to honor members of the United States Armed Forces when the Eagles host Quincy. Veterans, military personnel and their guests will receive up to five free tickets per veteran to the games with their military identification or proof of service at the front of the Screaming Eagles Arena ticket window. This event is sponsored by the American Legion Post 324 and the USI Student Veteran Association.

USI Men’s Basketball Week 10 Quick Notes:

USI wins third-straight to open homestand. USI extended its winning streak to three games with a 72-69 homestand opening win over McKendree University. USI had four players in double-digits, led by junior forward Emmanuel Little with 21 points. Junior guard/forward Clayton Hughes and senior guard Joe Laravie followed with 13 points each, while junior guard Mateo Rivera rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points.

USI in the GLVC. While the Eagles rose into a tie for sixth in the GLVC standings and two games out of fourth, USI climbed to sixth in the GLVC point standings that determine the qualifiers for the conference post-season tournament. The top eight in the point standings qualify for the GLVC Tournament in March.

Leading the Eagles in 2019-20. Junior forward Emmanuel Little leads four USI players averaging in double-digits with 15.9 points per game with junior forward Josh Price following with 13.4 points per outing. Little also leads the team with 7.6 rebounds, while Price follows with 7.5 per contest. Junior guard Mateo Rivera and senior guard Joe Laravie close out the USI double-figure scorers in 2019-20 with 11.9 and 11.7 points per game.

Little closing on 1,000 points. Junior forward Emmanuel Little is closing in on 1,000 points. He has 941 during his two-plus seasons. USI has had 20 1,000-point scorers in the history of the program. The junior forward also has moved into the top 10 in rebounding this season, ranking eighth with 591 boards.

USI leaders at home. Junior forward Emmanuel Little is USI’s top scorer at home with 16.6 points per game. Little is followed by junior forward Josh Price with 15.8 points per contest, while junior guard Mateo Rivera and senior guard Joe Laravie are posting 11.9 and 11.7 points per contest at home, respectively.

USI vs. Truman State. USI leads the all-time series versus Truman State University, 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the GLVC, after the only meeting last year in the Physical Activities Center, 80-65. USI also held a 5-0 series lead in the PAC. Junior forward Emmanuel Little and senior guard/forward Kobe Caldwell had 13 points each in the 2018-19 meeting, following guard Alex Stein’s team-best 25 points.

Truman State in 2019-20. The Bulldogs of Truman State enter Thursday’s game tied for second in the GLVC standings and fourth in the GLVC point standings with an 11-5 overall record, 7-1 in the league. Truman State won its last outing over Quincy University, 84-70, on the road.

USI vs. Quincy. USI leads the all-time series versus Quincy University, 32-10, after winning, 78-56, at the Physical Activities Center in 2018-19. The Eagles have had the advantage at home, 20-4, and in the GLVC, 30-8. Guard Alex Stein led USI in the 2018-19 victory with 19 points, while junior forward Emmanuel Little had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Quincy in 2019-20. The Quincy Hawks start the weekend 10-6 overall and 4-4 in the GLVC after falling to Truman State Monday. Quincy had won four-straight before the loss on Monday and visits McKendree Thursday before coming to USI.
