Shafford, Raley and Webb named to OVC Players to Watch List

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball is projected to place first in the Ohio Valley Conference in a vote submitted by the league’s head coaches and communication directors.

USI heads into its third season in the Ohio Valley Conference after capturing its first-ever OVC regular-season and tournament championships in 2023-24. The Screaming Eagles went 25-7 overall and 17-1 in the OVC last season, leading to a first-ever berth and second-round appearance in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).

The 11-team OVC will feature a schedule with each team playing each other twice in a home-and-home split for a 20-game schedule. The conference schedule will occur from December 19, 2024, through March 1, 2025. The conference’s season concludes with the OVC Basketball Championship Tournament at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana March 5-8, 2025.

Southern Indiana topped the OVC preseason poll with 200 points and 20 first-place votes. The University of Tennessee at Martin was picked second with 180 points and two first-place votes. Eastern Illinois received a third-place projection with 145 points.

Tennessee Tech University was picked fourth with 140 points, and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock was selected fifth with 135 points. Western Illinois University was sixth with 119 points in front of Lindenwood University with 81 points. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Morehead State University tied for eighth with 61 points. Tennessee State University and Southeast Missouri State University rounded out the poll with 59 and 29 points, respectively.

As part of the OVC’s preseason announcement, Southern Indiana was represented by three players on the 2024-25 OVC Players to Watch List. Fifth-year senior forwards Meredith Raley and Madi Webb and senior guard Vanessa Shafford were named following all-conference selections last season.

Shafford was named All-OVC First Team last season after leading USI in several categories, including points (13.6), rebounds (7.7), and minutes (30.0) per game while starting all 32 games. Shafford had a team-best 46 steals and shot 45.6 percent (161-353) overall, 81 percent (47-58) at the free-throw line, and 38.3 percent (67-175) from three. The guard ranked first in the OVC in three-point percentage (40.2) in conference play and ranked top 10 in the OVC in overall scoring and rebounding. Shafford also collected seven doubles-doubles a year ago.

Raley was also an All-OVC first-team selection in 2023-24 after posting a team second-best 12.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest. Raley averaged 24.3 minutes per game and started all 31 games she appeared in. The forward was third on the squad in field goal percentage at 47.7 percent (125-262) and three-point percentage at 36.8 percent (32-87). Raley ranked top 10 in the OVC in rebounding and free-throw percentage. Raley also had four double-doubles during the season. Raley finished the 2023-24 campaign being selected to the OVC All-Tournament Team and named Tournament MVP after totaling 30 points on 11-20 shooting and 15 rebounds in two games played during USI’s run to the OVC Tournament championship title.

Webb earned All-OVC second-team honors in her first season with USI. Webb started all 31 games she appeared in, averaging a career-best 24.8 minutes, 10.8 points, and 4.8 rebounds. Webb was third on the squad in scoring and rebounding and second in field goal percentage at 49.7 percent (148-298). Webb picked up two doubles-doubles last season. Webb was selected to the OVC All-Tournament Team after totaling 26 points on 46 percent shooting with three rebounds and five assists in two games played during USI’s run to the OVC Tournament championship.

The 2024-25 USI Women’s Basketball squad features 10 returning players, including four majority starters, and two newcomers. USI Head Coach Rick Stein begins his 26th season at the helm with a 448-261 record. Stein was named OVC Coach of the Year following USI’s championship run.

USI gets the 2024-25 season rolling on November 4 at 6 p.m. against Brescia University (Ky.) from Screaming Eagles Arena. Southern Indiana will have three major conference opponents during the non-conference slate, including road games against the University of Louisville (November 8), Indiana University (December 4), and the University of Illinois (December 15). 0

INA, Ill. – The Vincennes University Golf team closed out their 2024 Fall schedule Monday and Tuesday at the 2024 Rend Lake College Fall Invitational hosted at the Rend Lake Golf Complex.

The Trailblazers closed out the season strong with a second place finish as a team and three individuals placing in the top 10.

Freshman Landon Gardner (Danville, Ind.) led the way for the Trailblazers on the links, opening the tournament Monday with an even par 72 before coming back Tuesday, battling strong winds to a final round 78 for a tournament total of 150 and a second place finish overall.

Freshman Brock Naile (Trico, Ill.) was the second VU finisher in the top five, bouncing back from an opening round 77 to shoot a 75 on Tuesday to finish with a total of 152 to take fifth place on the leaderboard.

Freshman Kadin Gibson (Franklin, Ind.) was the third Trailblazer in the top 10 with a first round 75 and a final round 81 to take seventh place in the tournament.

Sophomore Alex Nealis (Olney, Ill.) was the next VU finisher, having a very consistent tournament with an opening round 80 and a 79 in Tuesday’s final round to finish in a tie for 12th place in the tournament.

Freshman Parker Steininger (Vincennes, Ind.) rounds out the Vincennes scorers with an opening round 80 and an 82 in the second round to finish in a tie for 20th.

Freshman Matthew Mills (Boonville, Ind.) and sophomore Jackson Stone (Vincennes, Ind.) competed in the tournament as individuals, with Mills posting scores of 80 and 79 to tie for 12th overall and Stone coming in with an 89 on Monday and 87 Tuesday to finish 41st overall.

The Trailblazers as a team finished with a team score of 304 in Monday’s first round and a team score of 313 on Tuesday, with a tournament team score of 617 and a second place finish overall.

“We had a strong tournament, finishing second in the eight team field but was naturally disappointed in not winning it,” VU Hall of Fame Golf Coach Dennis Chattin said. “We were playing well in the first round and then really struggled on the finishing holes 17 and 18. We had the lead going into these two holes but our top four scorers were nine over in those two holes and lost the lead.”

“The second day wasn’t much better when we were seven over par on those two holes,” Chattin added. “Those two holes literally

USI Health Professions Center undergoing $49 million renovation

0

A $49 million renovation of the University of Southern Indiana Health Professions Center, which houses the University’s Kinney College of Nursing and Health Professions, is underway, adding over 48,000 square feet of additional space for classrooms, updated labs and state-of-the-art equipment for growing healthcare programs while also transforming the building’s exterior and entrance to campus.

“This exterior expansion, facing the roundabout and campus entrance, will add a striking new front door to our University,” says Steve Bridges, USI Interim President. “Inside, new labs, meeting spaces and new and updated areas for students and faculty will allow us to continue to grow our programs. The investment represents our commitment to advancing health professions education and serving the healthcare needs of our broader community.”

Funding for the design fees, construction, furniture and equipment comes from the Indiana General Assembly’s capital funding appropriation for USI approved during the 2023 legislative session, according to Jim Wolfe, Director of Facility Operations and Planning. This is the fourth and final stage of a multi-phase project in the Health Professions Center that began with a third-floor renovation in 2018.

“The Kinney College is proud to play a vital role in building the healthcare workforce for our community and state, with licensure and certification pass rates that consistently exceed the national average,” says Dr. Julie McCullough, Dean of the Kinney College of Nursing and Health Professions. “As we expand and renovate, our students will have access to cutting-edge labs and classrooms, ensuring they receive the best possible training to meet the evolving demands of the healthcare industry.”

Below is a breakdown of the current phase of construction focused on the first and second floors of the building:

Facelift for Front Entrance: The Health Professions Center is getting a bold new makeover that will redefine the entrance to campus. The expanded first floor will be the new home for the Kinney College’s administrative offices, Advising Center and Center for Health Professions Lifelong Learning Department, which are currently located on the second floor. There will be multi-functional student dining and study spaces on the first floor, in addition to new classroom space.

New Auditorium: A 250-capacity auditorium will be built on the first floor. The auditorium will be used as an interactive classroom and gathering spot for meetings and large campus events.

Nursing Skills Labs: The University is constructing eight new nursing skills labs equipped with the latest technology and equipment to provide future nurses with hands-on training in patient care. These state-of-the-art facilities will simulate a hospital setting, ensuring that students gain practical experience in a controlled and supportive environment.

Respiratory Therapy Labs: On the second floor, two new labs will be created for students in the USI Respiratory Therapy Program to support hands-on learning and clinical skill development. Equipped with the latest technology and ventilators, these labs will offer a realistic healthcare environment where students can practice critical procedures such as ventilator management, airway clearance techniques and cardiopulmonary assessment. A comfortable, quiet, and safe pulmonary function testing lab will allow students to conduct various tests that assess lung function.

Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Labs: Also on the second floor, there will be two new OTA classrooms with advanced therapeutic equipment and adaptive tools to help students to develop critical skills in assisting patients with various physical, cognitive and sensory challenges. The space will foster collaboration, learning and innovation, preparing OTA students for success in diverse healthcare settings.

Updated Look for the Second Floor: Faculty and staff offices, study areas, bathrooms, elevators, hallways and stairwells will be updated to match the newly remodeled areas in the building.

The Purple Aces will have their second-to-last home game this week

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The University of Evansville women’s soccer team returns home for a midweek match with the Illinois State Redbirds.
UE women’s soccer had its best offensive performance in two seasons at Valparaiso on Sunday afternoon. The Aces scored three goals for the first time since October 20th, 2022 to pick up another crucial point in conference play against the Beacons. Evansville’s offense was spurred by sophomore forward Taylor Johnson (Evansville, Ind. / Reitz HS) as she scored UE’s first brace in a game since 2021 at Valpo. Johnson had the first two goals of the match for the Aces, tying up the game twice to help Evansville come back for a draw after 90 minutes.

Illinois State comes to Arad McCutchan Stadium on a three-game unbeaten streak with two wins against Indiana State and Valparaiso. Overall the Redbirds have a 4-7-3 record with an even 2-2-2 Missouri Valley Conference record. Illinois State also has the current MVC Freshman of the Week in midfielder Eiley Henderson who tallied a goal and an assist in the Redbirds win over Indiana State.

Fifth-year defender Rachel Rosborough (Mt. Brydges, Ontario) is climbing UE’s rankings for minutes played in a career. With 12 90 minute games this season and 68 minutes played at UIC, Rosborough has played 1,148 minutes in 2024. For her career, Rosborough is at 6,326 minutes, and only 109 minutes behind current career minutes leader former goalkeeper Michaela Till.

With two saves on Thursday fifth year goalkeeper Myia Danek (Laingsburg, Mich. / Laingsburg HS) will move up in the record books to seventh for saves in a career. She will pass Whitney Raeon who played for UE from 2003-06.
