EPA Announces Appointment of John Busterud to Region 9 Administrator
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Andrew Wheeler announced the appointment of John W. Busterud to become Regional Administrator for Region 9. Mr. Busterud will oversee federal environmental protection efforts in: Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, the U.S. territories in the Pacific ocean, and 148 federally recognized tribes.
“John Busterud’s extensive background in energy and environmental issues makes him a great choice to lead Region 9,â€Â said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. “I look forward to working with him to advance the agency’s mission of protecting human health and the environment for all in the Pacific Southwest.â€

John Busterud comes to this role with over 30 years of experience as an environmental and energy attorney. Most recently, he was Senior Director and Managing Counsel, Environment and Real Estate, Law Department, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), in San Francisco, California from 1985-2016. At PG&E, he managed a broad practice including air and water quality, hazardous materials compliance and remediation, endangered species, and legislative and environmental policy matters. During his tenure at PG&E, Mr. Busterud served as an industry representative on EPA’s Clean Air Act Advisory Committee from 2012-2017.
Mr. Busterud is also a retired U.S. Army Colonel with multiple Combined, Joint and Interagency assignments, including active duty deployments in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and Combined Forces Command on the Korean Peninsula.
Mr. Busterud has most recently served as a board member for the California Council for Environmental and Economic Balance, Vice Chair of the California Veterans Board and Chair of the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East.
Mr. Busterud received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Union College, NY, and his Juris Doctor from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. He is also a graduate of the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College.

Eagles open 2020 with two extra-inning wins
Sophomore catcher Courtney Schoolcraft had a solo home run, a double and a walk-off RBI as No. 21 University of Southern Indiana Softball opened the year with a pair of extra-inning wins at The Cottrell Foundation Loyal Blue Classic Friday afternoon.
Schoolcraft hit a solo home run to break a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning of the Screaming Eagles’ 2-1, 10-inning win over Southern Wesleyan University in the opening game before hitting a double and a walk-off, RBI-single in USI’s 1-0, eight-inning win over Gannon University.
USI (2-0) capitalized on the international tie-breaker rule in the 10th inning against Southern Wesleyan as senior shortstop Taylor Ricketts had a sacrifice fly to push across the go-ahead run. Freshman pitcher/first baseman Allie Goodin, meanwhile, was impressive in a relief appearance.
Goodin (1-0) blanked the Warriors on three hits and a walk in six innings of work to pick up her first career collegiate win. The Evansville native and Mater Dei graduate racked up four strikeouts, while helping herself at the plate with a hit in her first regular-season collegiate at-bat.
Senior All-American pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt (1-0) followed Goodin’s effort with her school-record 34th career complete-game shutout in USI’s win over Gannon. Leonhardt overcame some early control issues to strikeout nine batters, all while allowing just three hits to earn her 77th career win.
Offensively, the Eagles were limited to just two hits, a Leonhardt double in the third and bunt single in the sixth, as they went into the last half of the seventh inning trying to break the scoreless tie. Schoolcraft’s double in the seventh helped the Eagles load the bases with no outs, but their offense failed to push the winning run across the plate as Gannon was able to force an extra frame with a pair of ground ball outs and a strikeout.
The game looked as if it would head to the ninth inning before a two-out single by junior outfielder Alicia Webb kept USI’s eighth frame alive. Freshman catcher/infielder Sammie Kihega drew a walk in the next at-bat to put Webb into scoring position, while Schoolcraft hit the first pitch she saw down the leftfield line to score Webb and end the game with checkmark in the Eagles’ win column.
USI returns to action Saturday at 3 p.m. (CDT) when it takes on No. 16 and tournament host University of North Georgia. The Eagles end the second day of The Cottrell Foundation Loyal Blue Classic with a bout against No. 8 West Chester University at 5 p.m.
Hit and Run
 The Evansville Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying the male driver of this vehicle that was involved in a Hit and Run Motor Vehicle Accident at the Deluxe Inn on February 8th.Â
 It is believed that the female was in the driver’s seat earlier, but left before the incident occurred. Her picture is being distributed only to assist in identifying the suspect.Â
 The Hit and Run vehicle appears to be a Ford Edge and has the front passenger side headlamp out.Â

Bullitt County Kentucky Murder Suspect Apprehended on I-64
Earlier today the U.S. Marshals Task Force, which consists of officers from the U.S. Marshals Service, Indiana State Police, Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and Evansville Police received information that Anthony Allen, 44, of Louisville, was wanted for murder out of Bullitt County, KY, and was possibly in the Evansville area. The alleged murder occurred on Saturday, February 8. Officers received information that Allen was possibly meeting his girlfriend, Tonya Middleton, 42, of Louisville, at the Pilot Truck Stop located on US 41 at Warrenton Road in Gibson County. Middleton is an over the road truck driver. At approximately 11:10 officers observed Middleton’s tractor-trailer leave the truck stop and go west on I-64. Moments later the U.S. Marshals Task Force and Indiana State Police conducted a traffic stop near the 17 mile-marker and located Allen inside the tractor-trailer. Allen was arrested without incident and taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail where he is currently being held without bond. Middleton was arrested for assisting a criminal and taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail where she is currently being held without bond.

USI MBB scores 101 point for GLVC win
University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball shot a blistering 68.4 percent in the second half and cruised to a 101-77 victory over Lindenwood University Thursday evening at Screaming Eagles Arena. USI, which has reached 100-or-more points twice this season, goes to 18-5 overall and 10-5 in the GLVC, while Lindenwood finishes the evening 9-14, 3-12 GLVC.
The Eagles had to battle to get out of the first half with a three-point, 38-35, lead after the opening 20 minutes featured eight ties and seven lead changes. USI put together the largest lead of the half at 31-26 with 4:42 remaining when senior guard/forward Kobe Caldwell converted on a pair of free throws.
USI junior guard Mateo Rivera paced the Eagles during the opening half with nine points, while junior forward Josh Price and Caldwell followed with eight points each.
The Eagles raced out of the locker room to start the second half, quickly building a 10-point advantage, 45-35, with a 7-0 run that was capped off by a three-pointer by Rivera. USI took command for good by pushing the lead to 14 points, 58-44, with a 13-9 burst and never looked back with 14:24 to play.
The USI lead would be extended by the 20-point mark, 86-65, when junior forward Emmanuel Little converted a jumper in the lane with 5:06 remaining. Lindenwood shrank the lead back to 14 points, 88-74, before USI made a final run to surpass 100 points and post the largest lead of the game, 24 points, with the 101-77 final.
The Eagles were red hot from the field in the second half, shooting 68.4 percent (26-38) and 70 percent from downtown. USI, which won the battle of the boards, 39-37, finished the game 55.7 percent shooting (39-70), 52.6 percent from the beyond the arc (10-19).
Individually for the game, Price dropped in a team-high 19 points to lead six players in double-digits. The junior forward was nine-of-12 from the field and one-of-three from the stripe in 25 minutes of action.
Caldwell and Rivera followed with 15 points each, while Little and senior guard Darnell Butler dropped in 12 points apiece. Junior guard/forward Clayton Hughes rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
Little also led USI on the glass, grabbing 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season.
USI concludes the two-game homestand with the 2020 Homecoming game against #19 (D2SIDA)/#20 (NABC) University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Tritons are 21-4 overall and 12-3 in the GLVC after defeating McKendree University, 68-65, this evening in Lebanon, Illinois.
The Eagles lead the all-time series with the Tritons, 38-12 all-time despite being defeated in the first meeting, 73-68, in St. Louis two weeks ago. Caldwell led the Eagles in the loss with a season-high tying 18 points. USI also held a 19-1 lead in games at the old Physical Activities Center.
Eagles hold off Lindenwood rally for fourth straight win
University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball held Lindenwood University scoreless for the final five-and-a-half minutes of the game as the Screaming Eagles held on for a 70-55 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory at Screaming Eagles Arena.
Thursday’s contest looked eerily similar to the Screaming Eagles’ previous meeting with Lindenwood, a game USI won 81-68 in St. Charles, Missouri, less than two weeks ago.
Like the previous meeting, the Eagles jumped out to a big first-half lead, only to see it shrink; and, like the last meeting, the Eagles used a late run to repell the Lions’ charge and come away with the victory.
USI (15-6, 11-4 GLVC) outscored the Lions 18-4 in the second period to build a commanding 39-20 advantage.
Lindenwood (13-8, 9-6 GLVC), however, rallied throughout the second half. The Lions used a 24-point third quarter to trim USI’s lead to 12 points heading into the fourth quarter; then used an 11-2 run in the final period to get to within three points.
USI, however, slammed the door on the Lindenwood comeback as the Eagles held the Lions without a field goal throughout the final six minutes of the contest.
Junior guard Emma DeHart and freshman forward Hannah Haithcock combined for 10 points in the final five minutes as USI closed the contest on a 12-0 run.
DeHart had 18 points to lead the Eagles, while Haithcock finished with 16 points. Freshman guard Addy Blackwell, who went 5-of-5 from the field and 3-of-3 from downtown, added a season-high 14 points and four steals.
Senior guards Kiara Moses and Ashley Johnson respectively finished with eight rebounds and eight assists for the Eagles, who scored 35 points off Lindenwood’s 24 turnovers.
The Lions, who were held to 22 points below their season average, were led by senior forward Kallie Bildner and senior guard Lindsey Medlen. Bildner had a game-high 20 points and 17 rebounds, while Medlen had 14 points and eight assists.
Despite being outrebounded, 44-32, the Eagles maintained a 40-26 scoring advantage in the paint, while USI’s reserves outscored Lindenwood’s bench players, 24-10.
USI returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts the University of Missouri-St. Louis for Homecoming at Screaming Eagles Arena. The Tritons (12-12, 7-8 GLVC) earned a 79-73 road win over McKendree University Thursday evening in Lebanon, Illinois.
USI’s Leonhardt named to Player of Year Watch list
University of Southern Indiana Softball senior pitcher Jennifer Leonhardt has been named to the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II Player & Pitcher of the Year Watch List for the 2020 season. She was a Top 25 finalist for the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II Player & Pitcher of the Year award in 2019.
In 2019, Leonhardt was both the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year and GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year as well as a first-team Academic All-American.
Leonhardt earned second-team All-America honors by both the NFCA and Division II Conference Commissioners’ Association after going 21-9 in the pitcher’s circle with four saves, a 1.29 ERA, 243 strikeouts and a .187 opponent batting average. She tossed two complete-game shutouts in the NCAA II Midwest Region #1 Tournament, bringing her single-season total to a school-record tying 13 as well as her career mark to a school-record tying 33. She also broke the school records for strikeouts (705) and wins (76).
Her efforts on the field helped lead the Eagles to a 35-21 overall record and a 19-7 mark in GLVC play. USI advanced to the NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament for the fifth-straight year and sixth time in seven seasons.
Two years ago, Leonhardt was the NCAA II Softball Championship Most Outstanding Player after a dominating post-season that saw her post a 12-1 record with a 1.35 ERA, a .152 opponent batting average and 96 strikeouts. Her effort was instrumental in leading the Screaming Eagles to their first-ever national championship.
In the NCAA II Softball Championship alone, Leonhardt was 5-0 with a 1.44 ERA, a.091 opponent batting average and 40 strikeouts in 34 innings of work.
Leonhardt is one of four GLVC Players to be recognized on the watch list and one of eight from the Midwest Region. This is the third straight year that Leonhardt has been on the preseason watch list.
The Eagles begin the year Friday at 11 a.m. (CDT) when they take on Southern Wesleyan University at the University of North Georgia’s Cottrell Foundation Loyal Blue Classic in Dahlonega, Georgia.
