Airlines And Treasury Reach An Agreement Over Multibillion-Dollar Relief
Airlines And Treasury Reach An Agreement Over Multibillion-Dollar Relief
The airline also agreed to limits on stock buybacks, dividends, and executive compensation.
Southwest Airlines said it would receive more than $3.2 billion, consisting of more than $2.3 billion in direct payroll support and a low-interest loan of almost $1 billion.
“We applaud the quick action by the U.S. Department of Treasury to infuse liquidity into the economy and try to keep businesses open and people on the job,” Southwest Chairman and CEO Gary Kelly said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said the Transportation Department would deliver $1.08 billion to California’s airports to fund their continued operations during the crisis.
Mnuchin said in a statement, “This is an important CARES Act program that will support American workers and help preserve the strategic importance of the airline industry while allowing for appropriate compensation to the taxpayers.”
Airlines have had some fiscal breathing room in past weeks from the slump in fuel prices and the grounding of the Boeing 737 Max, which has prevented many from taking delivery of (and paying for) the new planes they had on order, but the industry’s fixed overhead costs are so high that even those circumstances could not offer a reprieve for very long.
“The cash burn rate at these fuel prices and with the amount of flying they’re actually doing is probably on the order of $8 billion a month for passenger flights,” airline industry consultant Robert W. Mann told NBC News.
Because tickets are often booked months in advance, those service obligations weigh on airline balance sheets, Mann said. “It’s all well and good as long as people continue to buy tickets. If the advance purchase revenue stream is interrupted if that stops all of a sudden, all that negative working capital rears its ugly head and you have a cash crisis.”
Oakland City University Partners With The National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) By Launches Educational Advancement Research Network
The National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) today announced the launch of the Educational Advancement Research Network (EARN), which connects individuals in the electrical construction industry with higher educational institutions for degree and certificate programs. The programs are hosted entirely online, allowing learners to progress on their own timeline.
“While our industry depends on hands-on skills like bending conduit and pulling wire, this program allows our contractors to advance further, with learning opportunities in project management, business administration, marketing, accounting, and human resources, among others,” said NECA CEO David Long.
The program is designed to give thousands of employees in the electrical contracting industry – from workers in the field to the front office – access to a strategic network of online education and training courses hosted by accredited colleges and universities. Many programs are offered on-demand and individuals can start taking classes right away.
NECA has initially partnered with Brandman University, Louisiana State University Online, and Oakland City University, offering a total of 17 certificate programs, with some providing additional college credits. The programs are curated specifically for individuals in electrical construction firms, allowing NECA members to offer opportunities for employees to grow, and for individuals to proactively expand their knowledge.
“We have carefully selected institutions that have a proven track record of delivering quality online education,” said Long. “We’re very proud to offer a program that will allow the many dedicated electrical contracting employees across the country to build their own career path on their own timeline.”Â
ABOUT THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION
NECA is the voice of the $171 billion electrical construction industry that brings power, light, and communication technology to buildings and communities across the United States. NECA’s national office in Bethesda, Md., and 118 local chapters advance the industry through advocacy, education, research, and standards development. Go to www.necanet.org for more information.

AG Curtis Hill Secures $19.5 Million Equifax Settlement For Hoosier Consumers
Attorney General Curtis Hill announced today that Indiana will receive $19.5 million under a settlement reached with Equifax following Indiana’s lawsuit against the company over its massive 2017 data breach.
Indiana was one of two states that opted not to participate in a multistate settlement in July 2019 — choosing instead to file its own lawsuit and ultimately negotiate its own settlement with Equifax, one of the world’s largest credit-reporting bureaus.
Indiana’s total $19.5 million settlement exceeds the amount received by any of the 48 states that participated in the multistate settlement, which distributed $175 million to participating states. The full amount of Indiana’s settlement provides restitution payments to Indiana’s affected consumers, minus the cost of administering those payments.
“We knew back in 2019 that we could get a better deal for Hoosiers than the amounts being discussed as part of the multistate settlement,†Attorney General Hill said. “In our own direct negotiations with Equifax representatives, we made sure to prioritize restitution payments for consumers affected by this preventable breach.â€
Hoosiers who may be eligible for restitution payments through Indiana’s specific case should watch for further announcements and follow a claims process to be outlined at a later date.Â
The Equifax data breach, which occurred from May 2017 through July 2017, affected approximately 147 million Americans, including 3.9 million Indiana residents. It compromised Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses and, in some cases, driver’s license numbers and credit card information. Indiana’s lawsuit notably contained allegations about Equifax’s failure to adequately secure consumers’ information; misrepresentations related to Payment Card Industry security standards; misrepresentations about the status of Equifax’s information security; failure to notify Indiana consumers in compliance with Indiana law; and failure to maintain reasonable security procedures.
“Equifax failed to adequately protect Indiana residents whose personal information was exposed by the breach,†Attorney General Hill said. “We have worked diligently to hold Equifax accountable and achieve the best possible resolution. Equifax has agreed to correct its security deficiencies and properly safeguard consumers’ information in the future.â€
