Doctor Shares His COVID-19 Experience As Holcomb Extends Stay-At-Home Order To May 1,2020

INDIANAPOLIS—Dr. Ram Yeleti of Community Health Network stood with Gov. Eric Holcomb and Dr. Kristina Box in early March as together they announced the first case of COVID-19 to be diagnosed in Indiana.

Friday, as he gave Yeleti a chance to share his family’s personal experience with the disease, Holcomb said is extending the statewide lockdown until May 1 because of the highly contagious virus.

Yeleti, in the governor’s daily virtual press briefing, provided a rare, first-hand account of the novel coronavirus and how it can affect people differently. Answering questions from Box, he described about how he contracted a relatively mild form of COVID-19 that left him with a cough and fatigue while his wife, Indira, ended up in a hospital intensive care unit.

Yeleti said his illness began with a scratchy throat and he immediately quarantined himself from the rest of his family. After being tested, his fears were confirmed as test results came back positive.

“It was a little more terrifying than I expected it to be quite honest,” he said.

In spite of his precautions, his wife contracted the disease. Her symptoms were much more severe and included body aches and nausea.

After being rushed to the hospital, his wife was admitted to the hospital and ICU. She underwent treatment using an investigative drug and has since been released from the hospital and is now back at home.

“We just had to do whatever we can,” he said. “There were hundreds of people praying for her and I think that goes a long, long way. Faith and hope and prayer during these times, I just can’t stress enough how important that it.”

Also Friday, Box provided the daily count of new COVID-19 cases and the number of fatalities—642 new positive ones, bringing the state’s total to 10,154, and 42 additional deaths, with 519 total statewide.

Box provided additional information about positive COVID-19 cases in the state, including the average length of a hospital stay for patients. Of a group of 7,955 COVID-19 positive patients, 2,763 made emergency room visits and 2,026 were hospitalized.

Of those hospitalized, 501 patients were admitted to the ICU. Hospital stays averaged nine days for those who were not admitted to the ICU and 10.4 days to those who were admitted to the ICU.

“We are going to continue to work on getting more data, specifically breaking this down by race and by gender and by ethnicity, and we’ll be able to give that data to you as that comes on board,” she said.

Box also said that 3,718 new patients were tested in a single day, the highest number so far. She said while the reported daily cases are increasing day-to-day, the public shouldn’t be alarmed as plans to reopen the economy begin. That’s because as more people are tested there will be more positive results.

However, some lawmakers say there should be more testing in some parts of the state.

Rep. Mara Candelaria Reardon, D-Munster, sent a letter Friday to Holcomb asking for more tests to be administered in Lake County, the county with the second highest number of cases and deaths, only behind Marion County.

“Though the population of Marion County is twice the size of Lake County, Marion County has conducted four times the amount of COVID-19 tests, leaving vulnerable communities in Lake County suffering as a direct result,” she said in the letter.

She added that widespread testing is the key to safely reopening the economy.

Holcomb has said that Indiana’s economy will gradually be reopened and has asked for input from some of the state’s business sectors about how to do it safely.

Meanwhile, the state’s latest employment statistics were released Friday, showing an unemployment rate of only 3.2%.

That data reflects the state of Indiana’s workforce as of mid-March, just before the worst of the pandemic led to widespread business closures and job losses. Fred Payne, the commissioner of the Department of Workforce Development, reported Thursday that the state saw record numbers of unemployment claims over the preceding three weeks.

Payne noted Friday that his department worked overtime to get the system up and running that allows Hoosiers to apply for the supplement unemployment insurance recently approved by the federal government.

COMMISSIONER BEN SHOULDERS HAS CONTINUED TO SUPPORT PEOPLE AFFECTED BY THE COVID-19 VIRUS

1

Eight weeks ago today, County Commissioner Ben Shoulders sent the following press release out to the local media.  We have decided that Commissioner Shoulders Press release of February 28, 2020, is worth repeating.

Since then, he has provided important and accurate written updates and personal appeals videos while supporting numerous food trucks to many different groups?  He has volunteered for “Feed Evansville”, encouraging social distancing, and continuing to be there for our front line and healthcare heroes.  It’s public service like this that will help defeat this deadly invisible hero and flatten the curve locally!
February 28, 2020
Dear Vanderburgh County Residents,
On behalf of the Vanderburgh County Commissioners, I want to make everyone aware that our Vanderburgh County Health Department has been in close communication with both the CDC and ISDH in regards to what we know about COVID-19 commonly known as the Coronavirus—how we would track/monitor individuals locally who may have been exposed, and what the CDC and ISDH recommend for people to protect themselves.
Upon request, we have several documents with this information, and a great deal more information can be found on the ISDH website.  Please note that our Health Department has been in contact with our State Health Department and we are prepared for the Coronavirus should it appear in Vanderburgh County.  We have also been in contact with the local hospitals who are also prepared to respond as needed.
As of right now, the people who are considered most at risk are those who have traveled to China or those who have been in close contact with someone known to have this disease.
Currently, the CDC website indicates only 14 confirmed cases in the United State, with 12 of those having traveled to China.  Our Health Department feels our population is at more risk from the flu rather than the Coronavirus.  That isn’t to say we couldn’t see it appear in our county, but right now the likelihood is low.  Furthermore, the Vanderburgh County Health Department is being as proactive as possible as it relates to the Coronavirus.
Please contact our office at 812-435-5241 or the Vanderburgh County Health Department directly at 812-435-2400, should you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you for your time and attention to this important matter,
Ben Shoulders

“Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” APRIL 23, 2020

“Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” APRIL 23, 2020

“Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” was created because we have a couple of commenters that post on a daily basis either in our “IS IT TRUE” or “Readers Forum” columns concerning National or International issues.
The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give our more opinionated readers exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and Middle Jab and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “LEFT JAB” is a liberal view, “MIDDLE JAB” is the libertarian view and the “RIGHT JAB is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments in this column is free to do so.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in partnership with the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), is pleased to announce the recipients of the Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators (PIAEE) and the President’s Environmental Youth Award (PEYA).

“As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day, we are also celebrating nearly 50 years of environmental education that fosters awareness about conservation issues, and helps communities make informed, responsible decisions about their environment,” said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. “We are also honoring dedicated educators who spark enthusiasm in our youth to develop a love and respect for the environment and find solutions for issues that impact our air, water and land.”

From across the country, 10 educators and 35 students are being recognized for their leadership and commitment to environmental education and environmental stewardship. This year, 7 educators will receive the 2020 Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators, and 3 educators will be recognized with an honorable mention distinction. Winning educators demonstrated leadership by integrating environmental education into multiple subjects and using topics such as healthy school environments, environmentally friendly agricultural practices, reducing ocean litter, gardening, recycling, or STEM to teach sustainability to K-12 students.

Additionally, 35 students who worked as a team or individually on 13 projects will receive the President’s Environmental Youth Award. Their stewardship projects, conducted in 2019, display a commitment to learning, to protecting natural resources, and to engaging their communities in environmental protection.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES 31 NEW COVID-19 DEATHS, UPDATES STATEWIDE CASE COUNT

1

INDIANAPOLIS —The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) today announced that 394 additional Hoosiers have been diagnosed with COVID-19 through testing at ISDH, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and private laboratories. That brings to 12,438 the total number of Indiana residents known to have the novel coronavirus following corrections to the previous day’s total.

The new cases and new tests reported today are lower than expected due to a technology issue and should not be interpreted as a decline in new infections. The additional positive cases not included in today’s report will be captured in the coming days and reflected appropriately.

A total of 661 Hoosiers have died to date. Deaths are reported based on when data are received by ISDH and occurred over multiple days.  To date, 69,470 tests have been reported to ISDH, up from 67,264 on Tuesday. Marion County had the newest cases, at 97. Other counties with more than 10 new cases were Cass (31), Hamilton (12), Lake (72), Porter (10), and St. Joseph (21). The Lake County totals include results from East Chicago and Gary, which have their own health departments.

The complete list of counties with cases is included in the ISDH COVID-19 dashboard at coronavirus.in.gov. Cases are listed by the county of residence. Private lab reporting may be delayed and will be reflected in the map and count when results are received at ISDH. The dashboard will be updated at noon each day.

The dashboard also has been updated to make corrections based on the updated information provided to ISDH.
