Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” July 20, 2020

The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give our more opinionated readers exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and Middle Jab and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “LEFT JAB” is a liberal view, “MIDDLE JAB” is the libertarian view and the “RIGHT JAB is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments in this column is free to do so.

JUST IN: HEALTH DEPARTMENT UPDATES STATEWIDE COVID-19 CASE COUNT IS 927

INDIANAPOLIS —The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) today announced that 927 additional Hoosiers have been diagnosed with COVID-19 through testing at ISDH, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and private laboratories. That brings to 56,571 the total number of Indiana residents known to have the novel coronavirus.

As of today, nearly 36 percent of ICU beds and nearly 83 percent of ventilators are available statewide.

A total of 2,629 Hoosiers are confirmed to have died from COVID-19, an increase of two over the previous day. Another 193 probable deaths have been reported based on clinical diagnoses in patients for whom no positive test is on record. Deaths are reported based on when data are received by ISDH and occurred over multiple days.

To date, 626,880 tests have been reported to ISDH, up from 614,455 on Saturday.

Holcomb Maintains Strong Fundraising Advantage Over Myers

0

Linsdey Erdody, IBJ

Traditional fundraising may have been put on hold over the past few months, with candidates unable to host large gatherings with donors due to the coronavirus pandemic, but that hasn’t stopped the cash from flowing in.

We told you last week that Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb had raised nearly $1.5 million during the second quarter and had more than $8 million in cash on hand as of the end of June. Now, we know where Democratic challenger Woody Myersstands and have a better look at who’s donating to both campaigns.

Myers raised nearly $302,000 during the same time period, but only has $72,000 in cash on hand.

He also continues to loan money to his campaign. During the past three months, he loaned nearly $100,000. Year to date, he’s loaned the campaign more than $200,000. (Reminder: When Myers announced he was running for governor last summer, he said he would not be self-funding. Oh, how times have changed.)

But let’s get to the good stuff—who contributed to these campaigns?

Holcomb had 15 donations of $10,000 or more from a variety of business leaders over the past three months:

  • $40,000 from Jessica Tocco, founder of a lobbying firm based in Boston
  • $25,875 from Roger Reeves, strategic learning consultant for Eli Lilly’s Global Learning Services
  • $25,000 from Victor Smith, a former Indiana secretary of commerce and a principal of Bose Public Affairs Group
  • $25,000 from Rex Sinquefield, co-founder of investment firm Dimensional Fund Advisors and a philanthropist
  • $25,000 from Richard Workman, founder of Heartland Dental
  • $20,000 from Gregory Wendt, equity portfolio manager at Capital Group
  • $15,000 from Mike McCloskey, co-founder and CEO of Select Milk Producers and chairman of the board of Fair Oaks Farms
  • $12,500 from Douglas Rose, president of Irwin R. Rose & Co.
  • $10,000 from Robert Trone, co-owner of Total Wine & More
  • $10,000 from Jeff Laborsky, president and CEO of Heritage Environmental Services
  • $10,000 from Brantley Wright, partner in the Real Estate and Business Services groups at Bose McKinney and Evans LLP
  • $10,000 from Amy Schumacher, president of The Heritage Group
  • $10,000 from Kevin Kelly, president of Indiana Asphalt Paving Company
  • $10,000 from E. Mitchell Roob Jr., a former Indiana secretary of commerce and senior policy adviser with Bose Public Affairs Group
  • $10,000 from Philip Sicuso, partner at Bose McKinney & Evans and chair of the firm’s Gaming Group

Myers only received two donations of $10,000 or more from individuals:

  • $25,000 from Ina Coleman, organizational development consultant at Sirenia Partners
  • $10,000 from Louise Phanstiel, chairrman of the board at Myriad Genetics
