Southwest Indiana lawmakers Remind Local Residents To Complete Census

0

According to Vanderburgh County legislators, 2020 Census responses are critical to future federal funding in local communities, and Hoosiers should respond now if they have not already done so.

Door-to-door visits are beginning in some areas around the country to remind residents to complete their 2020 Census forms. State Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville) said Indiana is currently tied for 10th in the nation for response rate, with nearly two-thirds of Hoosier census forms submitted.

“The data collected from the census helps communities receive essential funding based on population,” McNamara said. “It takes just a few minutes to answer online, and Hoosiers who haven’t done so are encouraged to submit their responses as soon as possible.”

State Rep. Matt Hostettler (R-Fort Branch) encourages residents to visit 2020census.gov to fill out the census online. Hoosiers can also call 844-330-2020 or mail back the questionnaire sent to households.

“The census is collected every 10 years and everyone is required to complete it,” Hostettler said. “The information we provide helps fund our communities, schools, hospitals and first responders. These are important entities and we need the most funding for them to continue educating, healing and keeping Hoosiers safe.”

State Rep. Holli Sullivan (R-Evansville) said a number of households still need to respond from the following counties:

  • Gibson County, 33%;
  • Posey County, 31%;
  • Vanderburgh County, 34%; and
  • Warrick County, 26%.

“For the most accurate information and to receive top federal funding, it’s crucial for everyone to complete the census,” Sullivan said. “The data helps determine future roadway projects, community development assistance and many other needs. Hoosiers, please fill out the census and help shape our communities’ future.”

Census workers will wear masks and follow local public health guidelines when they visit households. All census takers complete a virtual COVID-19 training on social distancing, and other health and safety protocols before beginning their work in neighborhoods.

Billions of dollars in federal funding to support education, housing, health and public safety are on the line as this data impacts strategic planning decisions about statewide job training, locations of new businesses and public transportation projects.

Self-responses are due by Oct. 31, 2020.

Morphew Picks USI To Continue Running Career

0

University of Southern Indiana Cross Country/Track & Field Coach Mike Hillyard announced that Memorial High School standout Allison Morphew (Evansville, Indiana) has chosen to continue her running career with the Screaming Eagles’ women’s program in 2020-21.

Morphew earned varsity letters in cross country, swimming and track & field during her prep career, helping the Tigers to three straight sectional and regional titles as well as four City and SIAC championships during her cross country career.

A two-time honorable mention All-State honoree on the cross country course, Morphew won the 2019 SIAC, sectional and regional titles. She also earned All-State honors on the track as a sophomore and a junior and was a three-time state qualifier.

Morphew, who claimed SIAC and regional titles in the 800 meters during her career, also helped MHS to three straight SIAC team titles. She helped MHS’s 4×800-meter relay team to a seventh-place showing at the 2019 IHSAA Championships.

“Allison made a big jump during the spring (2019) and fall to emerge as one of the top seniors in the state of Indiana,” Hillyard said. “She has a combination of speed and aerobic strength that will make her a great mile/3K athlete at the next level. We’re very fortunate that she chose to stay in Evansville and represent the University of Southern Indiana.”

Morphew joins a USI women’s cross country squad that is coming off its 10th Great Lakes Valley Conference title in the last 12 years as well as its 13th overall. USI also finished 13th at the NCAA II Championships in 2019.

USI, along with the Evansville Sports Corporation, is currently scheduled to host the NCAA II Midwest Region and NCAA II National Championships in November at Angel Mounds.

“IS IT TRUE” July 28,2020

1
We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?
City-County Observer Comment Policy. Be kind to people. No personal attacks or harassment will be tolerated and will be removed from our site.”
We understand that sometimes people don’t always agree and discussions may become a little heated.  The use of offensive language, insults against commenters will not be tolerated and will be removed from our site.
IS IT TRUE today is our publisher’s 77th birthday and we wish him continued improved health and success?
IS IT TRUE that you are able to subscribe to get the CCO daily at no cost?
IS IT TRUE that for more than 17 plus years this column has served the City of Evansville and Vanderburgh County as the place to go to learn things that are going on in local government that other media is reluctant to cover?…much good has come from things posted in “IS IT TRUE” and the comment section has, for the most part, made the City-County Observer the go-to place for open constructive dialog?
IS IT TRUE we commend members of the “Re-Open Evansville Task Force” for providing the community with constant updates via social media? …that they are doing a creditable job considering the circumstances of the unpredictable COVID-19 virus? …this is the type of servant leadership that will get us through the COVID-19 pandemic?
IS IT TRUE that It’s obvious that outside groups and agitators are attempting to foment lawlessness and unrest to advance their own objectives to cause anarchy in America?  …we are a nation born of the revolutionary spirit of protest, coupling expressions of grievances against injustice with the desire to be free?  …we deplore the theft, looting, and the burning of businesses and historical landmarks caused by the random acts of lawless anarchists and thugs? …we believe that these lawless thugs should be arrested and their asses should be thrown in jail?
IS IT TRUE that members of law enforcement officers are human and they make mistakes. …we know that the overwhelming majority members of law enforcement understand that carrying a badge carries a major responsibility and understands when to use force and when to use restraint? …we believe that they also understand that they know what one bad decision will unleash?  …we support members of law enforcement that are professional, dedicated, honest, caring, and enforce the law without prejudice? …those in law enforcement that don’t display the above traits should look for employment elsewhere?
IS IT TRUE we wonder that next time you have a problem that needs the help of law enforcement who would you call? …would you call a known convicted felon or a member of law enforcement?
IS IT TRUE  that the City-County Observer “Living Outside The Box” speakers series has featured unique and insightful stories of success and perseverance from prominent business leaders that tend to fly under the public radar?  …the event Chairman Steve Hammer just announced that the next “LIVING OUTSIDE THE BOX” event will be held sometime in September or October (depends on the status of the Covid-19 virus) in the private banquet room at Tropicana-Evansville starting at noon?
IS IT TRUE that Dottie Thomas, Chief Deputy Treasurer is doing a fine job in assisting people that conduct business with the Treasurers’ office?  …Dottie Thomas is not only extremely professional but she also knows her stuff?  …we need more people like her working at the Civic Center?.
IS IT TRUE that incumbent Vanderburgh County Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave will become the first female commissioner to ever win re-election in Vanderburgh County history?

IS IT TRUE according to MSN that Newspaper publishing is one of only eight U.S. industries that employs less than half as many workers as it did 10 years ago? …while people still read newspapers, many who do subscribe to the digital version, reducing the need for those who print physical copies?  …that industry workers today are making less money than industry workers in 2010?  …since that time, the industry’s average annual wages dropped around 20%, one of the larger declines of any industry?

IS IT TRUE that printed newspapers are to the point that there is little financial reason for them to print papers 7 days a week?…the only things of value may be the archival records of the cities that have hosted them for over several centuries in many places?…the historical record of pictures, old articles and columns are worth more than the zero dollars that the day to day operations are cash flowing?…if you think fake news and biased posts are a problem now, just wait until there is no news at all?
IS IT TRUE when the people fear the Government we have Tyranny!  When the Government fears the people we have Liberty?

IS IT TRUE our “READERS POLLS” are non-scientific but trendy?

Today’s “Readers Poll” question is: Which five (5) cartoons would you like to see published in the Sunday CCO?
