“IS IT TRUE” AUGUST 4, 2020

6
We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?
City-County Observer Comment Policy. Be kind to people. No personal attacks or harassment will be tolerated and will be removed from our site.”
We understand that sometimes people don’t always agree and discussions may become a little heated.  The use of offensive language, insults against commenters will not be tolerated and will be removed from our site.
IS IT TRUE that the Honorable Robert (“Jeff”) Tornatta retired from the Vanderburgh Superior Court on April 24, 2020? …Judge Jeff Tornatta has a solid reputation for being fair, caring, non-partisan, and honest? …that retired  Superior Court Judge Robert “Jeff” Tornatta served with great temperament and was greatly respected by the attorneys who dealt with him over the years?…we wish the Honorable Vanderburgh County Superior Court Judge -Emeritus Jeff Tornatta and his lovely wife, Sharon, the very best in their well-deserved retirement?
IS IT TRUE we been told that Governor Holcomb is extremely close to appointing a person to fill the remainder of Judge Tornatta’s term during the next several weeks? …our sources also tell us that there are two extremely qualified finalists for the Vanderburgh County Superior Court Judge seat? …we are also told that Governor Holcomb has encountered enormous political pressure concerning the appointment of this Judgeship?
IS IT TRUE over the years Judge Tornatta’s mainly dealt with family law and civil cases?  …we told that many practicing attorneys hope that Governor Holcomb will appoint someone to the Vanderburgh County Superior Court that has extensive knowledge and experiences in family law, and civil law cases?
IS IT TRUE we also been told that there may be other judicial vacancies in the Vanderburgh County Superior Court system during the next few years because some Judges may be retiring?
IS IT TRUE we been told that that the heroin and opioid epidemic, stabbings and shootings continue to claim many lives in the City of Evansville?…it looks like 2020 is going to have a major increase in violent crimes and deaths?
IS IT TRUE we have an outstanding group of law enforcement professionals that are doing everything they can to protect us?  …It’s almost impossible for members of law enforcement to stop anyone from stabbing or killing someone?  …It’s that its time for our elected officials to look for more creative ways to help our local law enforcement agencies so they can do a better job fighting violent crime in our community?
IS IT TRUE if you feel members of our local law enforcement don’t have a dangerous job please that time and read the EPD Daily Activities report posted in the CCO?
IS IT TRUE we are hearing that the attempt to find a way to fund and build a new grocery store operation on North Main Street may be a moot issue?
IS IT TRUE one of the reasons given by the Buehler’s IGA for closing the doors was the high levels of theft that were occurring at the store?…this is the same kind of criminality that supposedly killed the Wesselman’s and the Sunshine Market at the same location over by the Lincoln Elementary School?
IS IT TRUE if politicians really want to clean up Jimtown and Jacobsville area, the first step is to incarcerate the Jims and Jacobs who rob and pillage everything that is out there? …good-paying jobs, reliable public transportation,  affordable and livable housing, good schools, affordable daycare services, a quality grocery store, and accessible and affordable healthcare would go a long way in helping people in that area?
IS IT TRUE that Vanderburgh County Commissioner Ben Shoulders has just received the unconditional endorsement of the IBEW Local 116?  …that the IBEW Local 116 has been in existence for 120 years that covers 14 surrounding counties that have been a vital component to the growth and stability of our region workforce for decades?
IS IT TRUE  we are told that many people are wondering what kind of political deals that members of the Evansville City Council will be cutting in order to determine the new leadership position for 2021?  …we are told that the new makeup of City Council leadership for 2021 may surprise everyone?
IS IT TRUE we wonder when construction will begin on the old downtown YMCA annex building?  … this building has been vacant of at least 40  plus years? …we hope that this proposed housing project doesn’t turn out to be another downtown “Pie In The Sky” venture that can’t get bank financing?
IS IT TRUE we are told that the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s funds to conduct investigations of homicides for this year is in danger of being depleted?
IS IT TRUE that former Evansville Mayors Jonathon Weinzapfel and Frank McDonald Jr. not only lived within their budget restraints and when they left office they had impressive cash balances and “Rainey Day” funds?
IS IT TRUE we wonder what will happen with the Northside Lloyd Pool when the new Aqua Center at Garvin Park is completed?

Moore Music Makes Investment In 700 EVSC Classrooms

2

Thanks to an investment by Evansville’s Moore Music, 700 EVSC classrooms will soon be equipped with new resources for teachers and students to start the school year.

This donation will help further the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation’s GAIN program. GAIN – Growth in Academics through Innovation and Neuroeducation – is the EVSC’s comprehensive approach to education, specifically educating the whole child. It combines high-quality learning and teaching with social-emotional skills (critical thinking, creativity, responsibility) that students need in order to be successful.

Specifically, the donation from Moore Music provides teachers with additional tools and funding to develop a video series they can use in their classrooms. These videos teach students how to use mindfulness practices to reduce and cope with their stress. Teachers can use the videos throughout the day to help manage stress and refuel students for learning.

Students from all backgrounds enter school while experiencing stress. Typical stress can stem from general anxieties, while more traumatic stress stems from violence in the home, addiction, or abuse. “These experiences can create barriers in education for our students, especially if stress is prolonged,” stated Maureen Barton, EVSC Foundation Executive Director. “Moore Music’s positive, forward-thinking attitude is helping EVSC further develop a program that goes beyond the classroom and reaches our school families and communities.”

“As a school community, we are thankful for Moore Music’s investment, especially for children relying on extra support due to negative COVID-19 experiences,” said Barton. “Also,15 schools will be outfitted with self-calming classrooms for students who need a reduction of stimuli to begin to focus and return to learning.”

FOOTNOTE: The donation stemmed from visits to Evans School where Moore Music leadership witnessed the success teachers had developing self-regulation skills with their students. “This is going to change the world, starting here in Evansville,” said Brett Mulzer, owner of Moore Music. “…I’m blown away.”
