Here Are 14 Countries That Say They Haven’t Had A Single Coronavirus Case.

0

COVID-19 doesn’t seem to be everywhere yet. Here are 14 countries that say they haven’t had a single coronavirus case.

The Polynesian island country, which has a population of about 200,000 people, has recorded zero confirmedcoronavirus cases.

It declared a state of emergency and closed its borders in March, including to boats and ships.

It said it would stay closed “until further notice,” to keep the disease out of the country.

People who are allowed in under special circumstances have to follow a series of regulations, health checks, and quarantine rules “to keep Samoa COVID-19 Free.”

The nation, made up of a series of islands, announced entry restrictions early in the global outbreak.

It’s now looking at how it can get tourists back without bringing the virus into the country.

The South Pacific island country has not recorded a single coronavirus case.

It declared a state of emergency in March that will last until the end of 2020.

The government is still in the containment stage of its plan, which means its goals are to “stop the virus coming into Vanuatu” and “to isolate any people found in the country who have introduced the COVID-19 virus (to prevent them spreading it to other people or to other areas of Vanuatu).”

The Polynesian country, which is made up of a series of islands, is still free of the coronavirus among its population of just over 100,000 people.

Since March, Tonga has quarantined people, implemented a curfew, banned large groups and contact sports, and urged social distancing in case the virus had entered the country.

It also closed its borders to flights and cruise ships in March.

It had a suspected case in early March, but later said the person did not have the coronavirus.

The Pacific Island nation has recorded zero cases among its population of more than 110,000.

People coming from countries with ongoing local transmission of the virus have to spend “at least 14 days in a country free of the virus before traveling to Kiribati, and to provide a medical clearance to confirm that they are virus-free.”

The dictatorship hasn’t reported any coronavirus cases, but experts say the claim of one of the most secretive and repressive countries in the world can’t be trusted.

The country already makes health claims like saying it has zero people living with HIV/Aids, which experts say are not possible, the BBC reported.

However, the country restricted travel early in the global outbreak, and is already one of the hardest countries to enter, which may have helped it avoid an outbreak.

The Pacific Ocean island country, made up of more than 600 islands, has not recorded any cases.

The country has closed its borders, and its COVID-19 task force has done simulations to see how ready it is for an outbreak.

Citizens who have been repatriated are also required to quarantine.

The Pacific Ocean island country of more than 10,000 people has recorded zero cases so far.

But the government has expressed ongoing worry about the growing number of cases in the surounding Oceania region, like in Australia and New Zealand.

North Korea

North Korea has not reported any coronavirus cases, though its leader, Kim Jong Un, has repeatedly outlined the disease as a potential threat.

The country, which already had little contact and travel with the rest of the world, closed its borders further in January, and has taken steps like quarantining a border town to try to stop its spread.

But experts are skeptical about the country’s official statistics and statements, with some believing that it could have had cases in March, or even earlier.

Its weak health system may not have been able to confirm them, and the secretive nature of the its ruling party means it may not admit if it is fighting an outbreak.

The Pacific Ocean country of around 18,000 people has not reported any cases.

Its health ministry has issued guidelines on how citizens can protect themselves.

It said in March: “While we do not want people to panic, we need to be vigilant and cautious, and to practise current recommended preventive measures, including frequent handwashing, practicing respiratory etiquettes, social distancing, and preparing as if we are going to get that first confirmed case.”

Travelers into the country also have to quarantine upon arrival.

The South Pacific island country, which is self-ruling but in free association with New Zealand, hasn’t recorded any virus cases.

It closed its borders in mid-August after New Zealand saw a resurgence in cases.

Prime Minister Henry Puna said: “We are taking very serious measures in order to protect our people and to control and keep this deadly disease away from our shores.”

Earlier this week its former prime minister, Joseph Williams, was hospitalized with coronavirus, but he is in New Zealand.

The South Pacific Ocean island country, which also has close links to New Zealand, has also reported zero cases.

It’s one of the world’s smallest countries, with a population of less than 2,000 people.

AG Curtis Hill Urges U.S. Supreme Court To Uphold Sentence Of Man Convicted Of Killing Grandfather

0

Attorney General Curtis Hill has filed a brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold the life-without-parole sentence of a man convicted of murdering his grandfather when the offender was 15 years old.

Fifteen other states have joined the Indiana-led brief.

In the state of Mississippi, Brett Jones stabbed his grandfather eight times in 2004 following an argument, killing the older man. He was convicted of murder in 2005 and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that under the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment, minors could not be sentenced to mandatory life without parole. In 2016, the court further stated that this rule applied retroactively to all those who had received such sentences before the age of 18.

In response, the Mississippi Supreme Court granted Jones a new hearing — after which the trial judge again sentenced Jones to life without parole. Jones has argued that his sentence is invalid because the court that sentenced him did not specifically find that his crimes reflected “permanent incorrigibility.”

In his brief, Attorney General Hill explains that the Supreme Court’s Eighth Amendment decisions do not require state sentencing bodies to use the magic words “permanent incorrigibility” when sentencing juveniles to life without parole. The court’s 2012 and 2016 decisions simply require courts to consider minor offenders’ youth when handing down discretionary sentences, Attorney General Hill said.

“Under our American system of federalism, states have authority over their own criminal matters so long as they ensure that all individuals are accorded their constitutional rights,” Attorney General Hill said. “In this case, Mississippi has met that standard because the Eighth Amendment clearly does not require a sentencing court to follow a specific procedure or recite certain words in order to justify a discretionary life-without-parole sentence of a minor convicted of homicide.”

NW Sixth Street

by Pat Sides

This photo captured a quiet moment in the first block of NW Sixth Street when it was taken in the mid-1950s. Most of the buildings in the foreground still stand, the most notable of which is the Loew’s (Victory) Theater at the far right. Next to the theater is Gem Furniture Mart, a fixture in downtown Evansville for many years.

The largest building across the street is the Huston Building, which was built in 1906 for Kohinoor Laundry; when this picture was taken, it was occupied by the U. S. Army Reserve Corps. The structure next to it is Schuttler’s Music Shop, also a longtime presence in the downtown commercial district.

The building visible in the center distance (behind the street sweeper) was located on the northwest corner of Sixth and Sycamore and housed the Salvation Army offices and chapel. Further down the block was the Synagogue Adath Israel. In recent decades, much of this block was razed to make room for a large municipal parking garage.

HOOSIER HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS: 1808 – Beck’s Mill Starts Grinding Corn

August 23 – August 29

The Week in Indiana History

Beck's Mill

1808     The first corn was ground at Beck’s Mill in Washington County.  Settlers from nearby Pigeon’s Roost were among the first customers.  A sawmill was soon added, and the business became an integral part of the development and economy of the area.

gavel1920     What is considered the first all-woman jury in Indiana met in Indianapolis in the courtroom of Justice of the Peace T. Ernest Maholm.  The 12 members took only five minutes to render a decision in favor of the plaintiff who was suing a pawn shop over ownership of a talking machine (phonograph.)  At the end of the hearing, Justice Maholm thanked the women for their service and awarded each a white carnation.

elm1925     Newspapers reported that the historic Indiana Constitution Elm in Corydon was almost completely gone.  The tree had  been dead for over a year.  All limbs had been removed, but a 10-foot section of the trunk was saved for posterity.  It is said that members of the Indiana 1816 Constitutional Convention sometimes conducted meetings in the shade of the huge tree.

Lockfield1936     Cornerstone ceremonies were held for Lockfield Gardens, a new housing section for near-downtown Indianapolis.  Those on the program included Mayor John W. Kern and State Representative Henry J. Richardson, Jr.  Music was provided by the African-American Boy Scout Band.  Called at the time a “slum clearance project,” it was part of the federal government’s “New Deal” recovery program and was the first public housing section in the city.  Only a few of the original 24 buildings remain, and they have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Franklin Booth1948     Franklin Booth died in Manhattan.  Born in 1874 on a farm near Carmel, Indiana, he became a renown pen-and-ink artist whose exquisite work earned him a place in the Illustrator’s Hall of Fame.  His beautifully-detailed pictures appeared in all the popular magazines, including Collier’s, Good Housekeeping, and Saturday Evening Post.  He also illustrated books for such authors as James Whitcomb Riley, Mark Twain, and Meredith Nicholson.  Pictured on right:  A bookplate for the Indiana State Library designed by Franklin Booth.

50
frank1970     Frank Sinatra and Jerry Lewis performed in front of a sell-out crowd at the Civic Auditorium in Richmond, Indiana.  Produced by Sinatra, the show was a benefit for the family of Dan Mitrione, the former Richmond police chief who had been murdered by terrorists while working for the U. S. Embassy in Uruguay. Sinatra bought tickets for local firemen and policemen and 400 military members.  A 36-piece band was on stage for the event, which raised more than $80,000 for the family.

Did You Know?

Visitors to the Indiana Statehouse during the legislative session have the opportunity to see the original handwritten State Constitutions.  They are housed in a display case located in the rotunda.  The display case itself has some history.  The wood used in its construction came from the famous Constitution Elm in Corydon.   When the tree was taken down in 1925, much of its wood was saved and used in a variety of ways, including the making of souvenir pieces like gavels and letter openers.  In the year 2000, there was enough of the elm wood left to build the case.  As the elm sheltered the signers of the Constitution in 1816, the wood from the tree still protects the document they produced.

Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” August 23, 2020

The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give our more opinionated readers exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and Middle Jab and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “LEFT JAB” is a liberal view, “MIDDLE JAB” is the libertarian view and the “RIGHT JAB is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments in this column is free to do so.
