“Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” SEPTEMBER 3, 2020

The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give our more opinionated readers exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and Middle Jab and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “LEFT JAB” is a liberal view, “MIDDLE JAB” is the libertarian view and the “RIGHT JAB is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments in this column is free to do so.

The virtual broadcast will feature a re-broadcast of the August 29, 2019 home game against the Gateway Grizzlies with new commentary. There will also be interviews with former Otters broadcasters, among others. The University of Evansville Purple Aces’ mascot, Ace Purple, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch, and Otters owner Bill Bussing will give his All-Otters Team of players since 2001, the beginning of the Bussing ownership, in an OttersTV segment. OBITUARY OF MARTHA “MARTY” FRIEND

Obituary Of Martha “Marty” Friend

February 24, 1950 – September 22, 2020

Marty was born on February 24, 1950, to Leo and Jean Beckman in Evansville, Indiana. She studied to be a Special Education Clinician at Indiana State University, and later went on to help her husband John establish and flourish his accounting practice.

Marty was a bright light in this world, whose exuberant personality and generous heart was noticed by everyone around her. She was a loving mother to her three children, a wonderful big sister to her siblings, an adored grandmother, and a cherished friend to so many. She housed a number of exchange students and Evansville Otters baseball players, and always had an open door for those who needed it. Marty showed her caring nature by continuously providing a home full of life, especially around the holidays. Marty’s love didn’t stop with humans; she also had love to share with many dogs and birds throughout the years.

Marty’s passions included sailing and traveling, with fond times in Hawai’i,  the Virgin Islands, skiing adventures with John, and a recent trip to Maine with her girlfriends where her daily routine revolved around the fall foliage, discovering lighthouses, and indulging in lobster.

She loved playing the piano, was a talented painter, and spent hours reading and mastering her craft at crosswords and word games.

If Marty’s vocabulary didn’t dazzle a crowd, then her elegance and grace sure did. Always making time to socialize and support her friends, Marty loved to dress for an occasion where her style and charm invariably lit up a room.

Marty is survived by her husband of 36 years John Friend; her children Melinda (Steve) Pearce, Eric (Emily) Friend, and Lee Vida (Lee Jarvis); her grandchildren Peyton (Nate) Broadhurst, Ryan Magruder, Talula Friend, Sadie Friend, and Josephine Friend; her great-grandchild Aspen Broadhurst; her siblings Bob (Valerie) Beckman, Chuck (Cheri) Beckman, and Melody (Martin) Eastman; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Marty was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, September 25th at Sunset Funeral Home. A graveside service will take place outside at the Lakeside Pavilion Gazebo at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 26th at Sunset Memorial Park. The service will be standing with chairs reserved for immediate family and those unable to stand. Friends and Family can also visit from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Heart To Heart Hospice Of Evansville, Llc, an amazing organization that helped us through every step of this transition.

“IS IT TRUE” SEPTEMBER 2, 2020

2
We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?
City-County Observer Comment Policy. Be kind to people. No personal attacks or harassment will be tolerated and will be removed from our site.”
We understand that sometimes people don’t always agree and discussions may become a little heated.  The use of offensive language, insults against commenters will not be tolerated and will be removed from our site.
IS IT TRUE we have an outstanding group of law enforcement professionals that are doing everything they can to protect us?  …if you feel members of our local law enforcement don’t have a dangerous job please that time and read the EPD  and the Vanderburgh County Sheriff Office daily activities reports posted in the CCO?
IS IT TRUE one big reason why the “Affordable Housing Trust Fund “cash balances’ is almost depleted is that the majority of Evansville City Council members recently voted to award a not-for-profit developer $400,000 for a housing project for the economically disadvantaged?  …. it’s obvious that a couple of Evansville City County members should take a class in “Cash Flow Management”?
IS IT TRUE we been told that an elected officeholder is telling people living at the Woodlawn Park Apartments that the City Of Evansville may be considering locating a “Police Sub-Station ” near this crime-ridden property in the very near future? …when one of the residents ask this elected city official where is the money coming from to locate a “Police Sub-Station” near the Woodlawn Park Apartments the politicians quickly changed the subject?
IS IT TRUE we been told if members of the Evansville City Council decides to pull a “rabbit out of the hat” and fund a “Police Sub-Station” near the Woodlawn Park Apartments they will have to pay the officers who man it hazard pay?
IS IT TRUE we been told if members of the “Keep Evansville Beautiful” Association would visit the Woodlawn Park Apartments they would be stunned to see that the grounds and surrounding area are far from being beautiful?
IS IT TRUE many people are wondering why the Evansville Codes Enforcement Department hasn’t done a better in requiring the owners of Woodlawn Park Apartments to comply with the city building codes regulations?
IS IT TRUE that the COVID-19 national testing program will last for at least another year?
IS IT TRUE several years ago the Indiana State Legislature approved “Sports Book Gaming” in Indiana? …we still wonder why they didn’t include “SIMULCAST HORSE RACING”?  …during times like these a “SIMULCAST HORSE RACING” venue located at Tropicana -Evansville would generate a bunch of extra gaming dollars for the Vanderburgh County taxpayers?
IS IT TRUE the “Defund the Police” movement has been a great thing for companies that manufacture and sell guns?…3 million guns have been purchased by private citizens since March?…half of those sales happened during the months of June, July, and August? …the rate at which the FBI is currently doing background checks on private gun purchases is around 190,000 per day?
IS IT TRUE we wonder how on earth can a city that has ZERO population growth, minimal wage growth, and experiencing a serious economic downturn can expect to collect more tax money from its huddled masses than it did the year before?
IS IT TRUE that a local and well-respected minority-owned newspaper named “Our Times” is starting to endorse 2020 candidates?  …that they recently endorsed incumbent Vanburgh County Commissioner Ben Shoulders? …that Commissioner Shoulders has now received endorsements from several labor unions (IBEW, Plumbers, Builders, Teamsters), Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding, County Commissioners Jeff Hatfield, and Cheryl Musgrave, and the local Latino newspaper “El Informador”?
IS IT TRUE when the Vanderburgh County Council discusses the Evansville CVB proposed 2021 budget again we expect that County Councilman Joe Kiefer will recuse himself from any discussion or voting on the agency’s budget request because his son is the President of the CVB?
IS IT TRUE we are told that members of the Vanderburgh County Council will approve the CEO of the Evansville Vistors and Convention Bureau $170,000 salary request for 2021 because its part of the contractual agreement he signed with this agencies Board Of Directors last year?
IS IT TRUE are told that former Evansville Mayor and Chancellor of Ivy Tech and candidate for Indiana Attorney General has the Republican political strategists worried?  …that word in the street is that the Jonathan Wienzapfel campaign is doing very well throughout every section of the State?

IS IT TRUE that State Senator Vaneta Becker (R) is representing portions of Vanderburgh and Warrick County with style and class?

IS IT TRUE that District 76 State Representative Wendy McNamara (R) is also doing a bang-up job for the people she represents?

IS IT TRUE we also would like to thank Kemberle Weightman for preparing and sending us the daily EPD activity report?
IS IT TRUE when the people fear the Government we have Tyranny!  When the Government fears the people we have Liberty?
IS IT TRUE our “READERS POLLS” are non-scientific but trendy?
Today’s “Readers Poll” question is: Are you pleased with the way that our local law enforcement professionals are protecting us?
