LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” SEPTEMBER 24, 2020

0
The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give our more opinionated readers exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and Middle Jab and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “LEFT JAB” is a liberal view, “MIDDLE JAB” is the libertarian view and the “RIGHT JAB is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments in this column is free to do so8

Obituary of Marty Friend

Martha “Marty” Friend

February 24, 1950 – September 22, 2020

Marty was born on February 24, 1950 to Leo and Jean Beckman in Evansville, Indiana. She studied to be a Special Education Clinician at Indiana State University, and later went on to help her husband John establish and flourish his accounting practice.

Marty was a bright light in this world, whose exuberant personality and generous heart was noticed by everyone around her. She was a loving mother to her three children, wonderful big sister to her siblings, an adored grandmother, and cherished friend to so many. She housed a number of exchange students and Evansville Otters baseball players, and always had an open door for those who needed it. Marty showed her caring nature by continuously providing a home full of life, especially around the holidays. Marty’s love didn’t stop with humans; she also had love to share with many dogs and birds throughout the years.

Marty’s passions included sailing and traveling, with fond times in Hawai’i,  the Virgin Islands, skiing adventures with John, and a recent trip to Maine with her girlfriends where her daily routine revolved around the fall foliage, discovering lighthouses, and indulging in lobster.

She loved playing the piano, was a talented painter, and spent hours reading and mastering her craft at crosswords and word games.

If Marty’s vocabulary didn’t dazzle a crowd, then her elegance and grace sure did. Always making time to socialize and support her friends, Marty loved to dress for an occasion where her style and charm invariably lit up a room.

Marty is survived by her husband of 36 years John Friend; her children Melinda (Steve) Pearce, Eric (Emily) Friend, and Lee Vida (Lee Jarvis); her grandchildren Peyton (Nate) Broadhurst, Ryan Magruder, Talula Friend, Sadie Friend, and Josephine Friend; her great-grandchild Aspen Broadhurst; her siblings Bob (Valerie) Beckman, Chuck (Cheri) Beckman, and Melody (Martin) Eastman; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Marty was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, September 25th at Sunset Funeral Home. A graveside service will take place outside at the Lakeside Pavilion Gazebo at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 26th at Sunset Memorial Park. The service will be standing with chairs reserved for immediate family and those unable to stand. Friends and Family can also visit from 10 a.m. until time of service on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Heart To Heart Hospice Of Evansville, Llc, an amazing organization that helped us through every step of this transition

Hatfield Dr. Shooting

Early this morning around 3:00 a.m., the Evansville Police Department was called to the Embassy Apartments, in the 1300 block of Hatfield Dr., for a shots fired run. Before officers could arrive, dispatch advised that a resident in the apartment complex stated that someone had been shot in the back/neck area.

Officers arrived and located a small pool of blood and a shell casing at the bottom of the stairs to one of the apartment buildings. There was a trail of blood leading up the stairs and down toward an apartment where the victim was located with a gunshot wound to his back/neck area.

The victim was not able to provide much information but stated that he came over to the apartment and as he went to walk up the stairs, he was shot in the back. He has no idea who did this and did not have a description other than three males. An ambulance responded and transported the victim to the hospital.

The victim is expected to survive his injuries. Anyone who might have knowledge of this incident is asked to contact the Evansville Police Department’s Detective Office at 812-436-7979, or the WeTip Line at 1-800-78-Crime.

City Councilman Zac Heronemus Defends Council President Alex Burton

1
Dear Anonymous NMTC@gmail.com,
I’m not sure where to start with my thoughts and feelings regarding your anonymously held attack on a person in our community. Maybe it is because you’ve chosen to partake in politics of destruction or maybe it’s because you’ve chosen to do so anonymously which denies any accountability of your actions or intent.
I do not know Ms Carothers very well but what I do know if she is that she is highly educated, thoughtful, and committed to seeing our community be the best that it can be. It is apparent that you (one person or more, don’t know cause you’re anonymous) have some strongly held feelings regarding Tanisha – it is hard to believe these feelings aren’t born out of the wrong place in your heart(s).
The accusations you levy and actions you request are serious. You are essentially threatening someone’s livelihood, working to destroy that person, and asking the council to weigh in on a matter that this body has no authority to do so. City Council has no business telling the members, or committee who chose Tanisha to lead the EBCC, how they should operate or determine the course of action in any matter of the organization. This is no different than any other organization in our city.
Effectively, you are asking us to participate in your efforts to smear, demean, and cancel someone in our community. As a governing body in Evansville, we have all been elected to serve our community to the best of our abilities. Participating would neither serve our community nor bring our best abilities into use.
Considering you feel this is of particular importance to council, I ask you (y’all) why it was only brought to President Burton and not the entire body from the onset? Were you aware that he and Tanisha know each other very well? If so, did you honestly expect any other reaction from him when attacking his friend? I would have the same response if I were in his shoes.
It seems to me that you are now attacking President Burton in the same manner you are Ms Carothers. He didn’t act nor respond how you wanted so he too is subject to your vitriol. Simply because he stands with Ms. Carothers and rejects your attacks on her. You (y’all) could never expect to have honest dialogue when anonymously attacking is the route you chose.
Lastly, I have a few more questions for you. Since you have stated that you’ll take this to the political and social mat, will you continue to do so anonymously? Speaking of anonymously, are you (y’all) the same person(s) who have set up other anonymous email accounts to harass President Burton through his work email and through his efforts with Feeding Evansville? Are you the same anonymous person(s) who called his community-minded colleague at Feeding Evansville an n-word lover? If you aren’t, I have to believe the amount of harassment President Burton has received as of late indicates a greater degree of community ills than I ever believed were true. And if that is true, I will stand with President Burton and work to make sure our community, the City of Evansville, does it’s best to fulfill the E is for Everyone anthem we all want it to be.
Sincerely,
Zac Heronemus
3rd Ward City Council
