UE AAUP Supports No-Confidence Vote in President

Evansville— 10/6/20 — The University of Evansville (UE) members of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) stand in solidarity with the UE Faculty Senate, which today passed a vote of no confidence in President Christopher Pietruszkiewicz by a margin of 13-2.

The vote comes on the heels of the Faculty Senate passing a resolution requesting meaningful involvement in the administration’s ongoing program evaluation process and the sharing of the program data that the administration has solicited from the consulting firm BKD. That resolution was endorsed by the faculty by a margin of 109 votes to 11.

The response that the Senate received from the President’s Council made clear that the Senate’s request would not be honored.

The Senate therefore had no choice but to assert its request more forcefully through the form of a vote of no confidence. In explaining the rationale behind that vote, the Senate also laid out the means by which the president could regain its confidence:

1. The President will release to the faculty as soon as possible all of BKD’s data points relating to academic programs and any accompanying reports.

2. All academic program evaluations will be conducted by a group that includes voting, facultyelected faculty members from all four of the university’s colleges and schools.

3. The number of faculty members in that group will be at least equal to the number of administrators.

4. All academic program evaluations will use a set of criteria that has been approved by the Senate and the Faculty through votes.

We, the UE members of the AAUP, applaud the Senate for its careful, patient, and considered work, and we thank its members for their dedication to the principles of shared governance. We call upon the alumni, students, emeriti faculty and staff of the university as well as the broader Evansville community to support the vote of no confidence in the president and to strive to convince the Board of Trustees of the necessity of shared governance. “IS IT TRUE” October 6, 2020

3
We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?
City-County Observer Comment Policy. Be kind to people. No personal attacks or harassment will be tolerated and will be removed from our site.”
We understand that sometimes people don’t always agree and discussions may become a little heated.  The use of offensive language, insults against commenters will not be tolerated and will be removed from our site.
IS IT TRUE that the “Mayors Reopen Evansville Task Force” has taken control of the decision-making process of how and when to reopen or close local businesses? …this group has some very talented people that can figure out the best and safest ways to return our community back to normalcy?  …many people are praying that they will make the right decisions for our community considering the virus is beginning to spike again?
IS IT TRUE that the most accurate advice given by those in charge is that you should wash your hands for 20 seconds, wear a mask, practice social distancing and don’t panic?…at this point, the litany of inconsistencies has shaken people’s faith in the ability of government to contain the spreading the COVID -19 virus?
IS IT TRUE millions of Americans are going hungry as pandemic erodes incomes?
IS IT TRUE we been saying for months that the more we test people for the COVID -19 virus the number of viruses will greatly be increased?  …all we can say to the COVID-19 handlers is hello big ‘RED TRUCK”?
IS IT TRUE that there are some long-shot possibilities that could add some spice to the upcoming Vice Presidential debate that is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, 2020?…if President Trump had to be on a ventilator before the debate which would likely result in Vice President Pence being temporarily given the power of the presidency?…this may create a situation that calls for candidate Kamala Harris and the moderator to refer to Pence as Mr. President?…stranger things have already happened in this crazy year? …that either way, the United States is in for one very challenging period during the next 30 days?
IS IT TRUE we are told that some people feel that it’s time to consider demolishing every image of any historical leader in public places?…this is because every person who did something once deemed worthy of being memorialized in a statue falls short of some sanctimonious groups litmus test for inclusion?
IS IT TRUE that some people feel that government should take down every statue of a human image of any kind and never erect another one?…they feel, that today’s great person will most certainly be a future generation’s enemy so let’s just stop with the statues, the pictures of politicians in post offices and city halls, etc.?…leaving no image standing and no picture hanging is the only way to appease every micro ideology out there?
IS IT TRUE that since the “defund the police” movement has taken hold in some of our larger cities violent crime has increased by over 250% in many of those cities?

IS IT TRUE that testing isn’t causing the COVID-19 virus to increase but its because the virus is spreading faster?

IS IT TRUE that the government shouldn’t do for people for what they can do for themselves?

IS IT TRUE when the people fear the Government we have Tyranny?  …when the Government fears the people we have Liberty?
IS IT TRUE that the Coranvius doesn’t discriminate against natural origin, race, color, creed, educational background, gender, blue or white-collar workers, religion, political affiliation, age, sexual preference, rich or poor, type of neighborhood you live in, or mental or physical challenges?
IS IT TRUE we would like to give five (5) cheers to Stacey McNeill, Director of Marketing at Tropicana-Evansville for coming up with creative ways to promote this region number one (1) gaming establishment offerings? …she also understands the importance that Tropicana continues to operate within the COVID-19 guidelines because of the huge positive financial and employment impact that this good corporate citizen have on this region?
IS IT TRUE many people are wondering when Ellis Park will be breaking ground on their proposed $60 million dollar gaming facility?
IS IT TRUE that it is a common practice for a County Assessor to quietly increase home values? …to protest these increases, the homeowner has to obtain a certified appraisal costing at least $300?  …that the cost of the protest will cost approximately the same amount of money as the increase in our property taxes?  …it is also a common practice by County Assessors that even if the homeowner pays the cost of the appraisal and wins, the very next year the County Assessor will increase the home values back to the original increase and then some?
IS IT TRUE we also hope that the 3rd Ward City Council member Zac Heronemus will begin to address the blight located on certain blocks of East Franklin, East Iowa, and East Michigan streets?
IS IT TRUE we hear that nepotism is alive and well at the EVSC?
IS IT TRUE members of the Vanderburgh County school board were elected to be “good stewards of the public trust” and not the stewards of the Superintendent of Schools?
IS IT TRUE our “READERS POLLS” are non-scientific but trendy?
Today’s “Readers Poll” question is: WHO ARE YOU VOTING FOR PRESIDENT?

COVID -19 VIRUS UPDATE FROM MAYOR WINNECKE

0
MAYOR
MAYOR

The current trend of COVID-19 cases in our region should be a reminder to reaffirm our commitment to social distancing (both indoors and outdoors), practicing good hygiene, wearing masks, avoiding large crowds, and staying home when you don’t feel well

There is no doubt that the recent days of high numbers of positive COVID-19 cases are a wake-up call. From all indicators, there is a significant spread of COVID-19 in our region. Let me repeat, our region in southwest Indiana is moving in the wrong direction

Here’s what we know from our county health department: Our recent surge can be attributed to two main areas: large gatherings at which people are not social distancing or wearing masks, and employees of long-term care facilities.

Our health care providers say that it’s clear that you put yourself at a higher risk of contracting the virus by attending events with lots of people, many, or some of whom, are not wearing masks and not social distancing.

Now is the time to think twice about attending receptions, visitations, or reunions

My annual report to the business community, an event held by the Chamber of Commerce of Southwest Indiana, was originally scheduled for October 15th. We are postponing that event to a later, more appropriate date to eliminate a potential community risk.

If you have in-person meetings, I highly encourage you to consider making them virtual events for the foreseeable future

Long term care facilities: the Vanderburgh County Health Department, and our local hospitals, continue to talk with leaders of long-term care centers about how to make their facilities safer for residents, their families, staff, and the broader community

If you have a friend or loved one in a long-term care facility, please adhere to the rules set forth by that facility.

We also remain concerned about what we’re seeing on a regular basis at youth sporting events. We are not typically seeing mask-wearing or social distancing at these games. While specific positive COVID cases can’t be attributed directly to these kinds of events yet, it seems inevitable given the prevalence of the virus in our community. We are asking family and friends to wear masks and social distance…even if you are outside.

It’s important to note that our hospitals are already near capacity with COVID patients, with the flu season just beginning. We can all help relieve the stress of our hospitals by getting a flu shot, wearing a mask, practice social distancing, practice good hygiene, stay home if you don’t feel well, and avoid large crowds when possible.

It is not our intent to shut down the community. However, we are asking you to use common sense and adhere to the recommendations that we are all undoubtedly tired of hearing. I get it. I’m suffering from COVID fatigue like everyone else. But this is our new reality until COVID-19 is defeated.

On the positive side, it is very clear that many of our businesses and schools are doing a good job implementing and following COVID-19 protocols. We strongly encourage that to continue, especially with support for masks to be worn.

As we start a new week, rest assured that understanding the data and relying on our medical professionals remain key factors in our decision-making process.

Stay safe,

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke
