Greetings Riverwatchers!

Recently, a September drive to Bloomington and back was eye-opening. The view of parched grass and dying young trees near my apartment building in Indy spoke of a hot August with downpours so hard that water ran off before assuaging thirsty soil.

Yet, the view through the White River Valley grew lush as I headed south. Some verdant, late-planted soybean fields gave the appearance of June to low-lying areas. Then, harvested cornfields and ripening oats along the ridge lines on my return drive north gave the feeling of late October. Red leaves peeking out of green hillsides hinted that change is ever coming. A scattering of dead trees standing amidst such liveliness was a reminder of the end of all life, while their passing grants the start of life to so many others.

Keep enjoying your favorite creeks, streams, rivers, and lakes, which afford proper 2020 social distancing for you and your dear ones! We look forward to a fresh start soon!

Algae and Cyanobacteria in Indiana

Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, are a group of photo-synthetic bacteria found in lakes and slow-moving streams. Increased phosphorus and nitrogen (nutrients) from fertilizers, warm weather, and low turbulence cause them to ‘bloom’ in large numbers. Phosphorus is particularly important in fueling their growth.

LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” OCTOBER 2, 2020

The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give our more opinionated readers exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and Middle Jab and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “LEFT JAB” is a liberal view, “MIDDLE JAB” is the libertarian view and the “RIGHT JAB is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments in this column is free to do so8

EPA Approves Innovative Products to Aid in Wildfire Management

0
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved two new products that could prove helpful in preventing future wildfires in Western states. These innovative products contain the new microbial active ingredient Pseudomonas fluorescens strain ACK55 for use as a pre-emergent herbicide.

“In Western states these products will improve wildlife habitat and reduce flammable grasses that contribute to wildfires,” said EPA Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention Assistant Administrator Alexandra Dapolito Dunn. “The ability of this product to reduce wildfires makes it an invaluable tool for not just protecting the environment, but also for protecting public health and saving lives.”

After reviewing public comments and the best available science, EPA has approved the registration of end-use product Battalion Pro (EPA Reg No. 91213-3) and a manufacturing-use product (EPA Reg No. 91213-4 ), which both contain the new active ingredient Pseudomonas fluorescens strain ACK55 (P. fluorescens ACK55). When applied, P. fluorescens ACK55 acts as a naturally occuring bacterium that becomes established in the soil. Once established, it produces a metabolite that affects the plant cell wall and membrane, which in turn reduces the plants’ ability to reproduce. P. fluorescens ACK55 is not expected to be harmful to humans or non-target organisms.

The herbicide Battalion Pro has been approved for targeted application on invasive, noxious grasses in areas such as food crops, pastures, forests and recreational areas. These grasses are often associated with wildfires that can lead to increased air pollution and loss of property and habitat for native wildlife.

Since P. fluorescens ACK55 must become established in the soil to provide optimal pre-emergent herbicidal effects, suppression of certain invasive grasses may take two to five years. Additionally, dry conditions do not allow P. fluorescens ACK55 to grow in the soil and colonize various plant parts, resulting in only minimal suppression.

In concurrence with today’s registration actions, EPA is also establishing a tolerance exemption for residues of P. fluorescens ACK55 in or on all food when it is used in accordance with label directions and good agricultural practices.

Rochon appointed to Governor’s Workforce Cabinet through 2022

0

Ronald S. Rochon, University of Southern Indiana President, has been appointed to the Governor’s Workforce Cabinet (GWC) by Indiana Governor Eric J. Holcomb. Rochon will serve a two-year term through September 30, 2022 subject to reappointment.

“It is an honor to be asked to serve in this role and contribute to this important discussion,” said Rochon. “Our state’s investment in higher education directly leads to improved employment opportunities for Hoosiers, and I’m eager to be a part of helping our workforce grow and thrive.”

As part of its ongoing engagement in the development of economic, cultural and educational opportunities in southern Indiana, USI has actively provided leadership on issues of workplace development through applied research, scholarly engagement, service learning, faculty and student consulting and regional partnerships. During Rochon’s tenure, USI has received grants from the Lilly Foundation to develop opportunities for adult learners and from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Indiana State Department of Health for workforce development in health and dementia care.

The GWC was formed in 2018 with the mission of addressing current and future education and employment needs for individuals and employers, strengthening Indiana’s economy by integrating and aligning state and federal resources, and ensuring a talent-driven education and workforce system. The membership of the GWC includes the business community, K-12 representatives, postsecondary institutions, Indiana lawmakers, and leaders from Indiana state agencies.

BREAKING NEWS: Trump, First Lady Test Positive For Covid-19 Virus

Trump, First Lady Test Positive For Covid-19

The announcement comes shortly after the president said he and the first lady were in the “quarantine process” following senior aide Hope Hicks’ positive test.
By Dartunorro Clark

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for the coronavirus, he announced on Twitter early Friday.

“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!” he tweeted.

The president will continue to work from the residence of the White House and a scheduled rally in Orlando, Florida, was canceled.

Hope Hicks, one of the president’s closest senior advisers, tested positive for the virus on Thursday, making her the highest-profile member of the administration to contract the virus who is in frequent contact with Trump and other top officials.

Trump, 74, told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday after Hicks’ positive test that he and the first lady, 50, were tested after Hicks tested positive and later tweeted they were starting the “quarantine process.”

The president has held campaign rallies around the country for months, many of which are outdoors but some have been indoors. The most recent one was Wednesday night in Minnesota and he also traveled to New Jersey on Thursday for a fundraiser.

Hicks along with several top White House and campaign advisers traveled with the president to Cleveland for Tuesday’s debate against Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

The president has drawn sharp criticism for his handling of the pandemic and downplaying its threat.

Also, his administration has sowed confusion over wearing a mask to slow the spread of Covid-19 and public health experts have said this mixed messaging hampered the country’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and even led to preventable deaths.

After months of public criticism, the president tweeted a photo of himself wearing a mask, writing in July, “many people say that it is Patriotic to wear a face mask when you can’t socially distance.” Then in August, Trump urged Americans to cover their faces in public as a “patriotic” thing to do.

The president has insisted he “didn’t lie” to the American public about the severity of coronavirus, despite having told veteran journalist Bob Woodward in March that he’d been intentionally downplaying the virus’s potential impact.

“What I said is we have to be calm. We can’t be panicked,” Trump told reporters in September after being pressed on his coronavirus response.

After a Trump rally in Tulsa in June, former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain tested positive for the virus and later died. At that same rally, roughly eight White House staffers, including Secret Service personnel, tested positive for the virus. One of President Trump’s personal valets, who works in the West Wing serving the president his meals, among other duties, tested positive for the coronavirus in May.

U.S. health officials continue to monitor for coronavirus cases in the United States. As of Oct. 1, more than 7 million cases have been confirmed in the U.S., based on NBC News’ count. There have been more than 205,000 deaths.
