CECI, ‘BOLTS PENALTY KILL PUT ON MASTERCLASS IN 2-1 WIN OVER HAVOC

Huntsville, Ala.:  Behind six successful penalty kills, 44 saves from Cole Ceci, and a clutch third period goal from Vili Vesalainen, the Thunderbolts gutted out a 2-1 victory over the Havoc in Huntsville on Saturday night.  The Thunderbolts’ next home game will be on Saturday, November 9th against the Macon Mayhem at 7:05pm CT.
Evansville put on another strong first period, and Tyson Gilmour opened the scoring at 6:21 from Brendan Harrogate and Joey Berkopec.  Huntsville goaltender Mike Robinson kept the Havoc alive with some big saves through the second period, and the Havoc finally broke through as Phil Elgstam scored on a net-front redirection at 6:24 to tie the game at 1-1.  In the third period, a Berkopec shot was deflected in by Vesalainen to put Evansville ahead at 4:54, with the assist credited to Gilmour at the time of publishing.  With some more big saves from Ceci and one more massive penalty kill later in the third period, Evansville held on to win 2-1 for their first road win of the season.
Gilmour finished with a goal and assist, Vesalainen scored the game winning goal, and Berkopec will likely be credited with two assists when all is said and done.  In goal, Cole Ceci finished with 44 saves on 45 shots for his second win of the season.  The Thunderbolts and Havoc meet once again on Thursday, December 5th at Von Braun Center.

Lady Blazers drop weekend finale at Moberly Area Classic

MOBERLY, Mo. – The short-handed Vincennes University Lady Trailblazers hit the floor again Saturday evening to close out their weekend at the 2024 Orscheln Classic.

The Lady Blazers faced off against host Moberly Area Community College in the final game of the weekend classic and came up just short as the Lady Greyhounds picked up the 73-61 victory.

Vincennes entered the game Saturday evening again playing with only seven active players but that didn’t stop VU from bursting out of the gates and building an early 17-12 first quarter lead.

Moberly Area would chip away at this deficit before the end of the first period but the Lady Blazers still ended the first quarter of play ahead 21-20 on the scoreboard.

VU extended their lead again early in the second quarter, building a 28-22 lead before Moberly Area again answered back to even the score at 30-30.

The two teams traded baskets down the stretch of the first half of action, with Moberly Area jumping ahead for the first time in the game with a late second quarter bucket to take a 34-33 lead into the halftime break.

The second half began as more back-and-forth from both teams, with each side answering basket for basket with Moberly able to hang on to their one-point advantage, heading into the final quarter of play leading 49-48.

Early in the fourth quarter is when the Lady Greyhounds appeared to take their next step forward, opening the final 10 minutes of play on a 10-0 scoring run, which VU answered back with six straight points of their own.

Moberly would again grow their lead to double digits midway through the fourth quarter at 66-56 which Vincennes was unable to overcome at the Lady Greyhounds closed out the 73-61 victory in the final game of the 2024 Orscheln Classic.

The Lady Trailblazers were led offensively again by sophomore Kennedy Johnson-Corley (Clarksville, Tenn.) who finished her weekend with 18 points, five rebounds and a pair of assists.

Freshman Netala Dixon (Dyersburg, Tenn.) also broke into double figures scoring, ending her night with 12 points, a team-high five assists and four rebounds.

Freshman Ahmya Thomas (Phoenix, Ariz.) was the third VU scorer in double figures, coming off the bench to add 10 points, five rebounds and three assists in the game.

Freshman Delora Pricop (Brasov, Romania) led the Lady Blazers with nine rebounds to go along with seven points.

The Lady Blazers will look to rebound as they get set to play in front of the home crowd for the first time this season when the Blazers take on Kennedy-King College Saturday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. eastern.

State Comptroller Honored as a “Women of Influence”

0

STATEHOUSE — Indiana State Comptroller Elise Nieshalla was honored as a 2024 Woman of Influence by the Indiana Business Journal, which recognizes women for achievements at high levels of leadership in business, community, public service and the arts in Central Indiana.

“What an honor to join leading women and hear their stories of great accomplishments,” said Comptroller Nieshalla who was accompanied by her husband and children during the ceremony. “These women are making their mark for the greater good of their communities, which is inspirational as I continue my work of continuous advancement in fiscal responsibility and transparency for our state.”

When asked to offer advice for women embarking on their careers, Comptroller Nieshalla offered, “Enjoy the season of preparation and education and the yearning for what’s ahead. Relish when the great opportunities come and be diligent in delivering value. And, as far as marriage and family life, nurture that commitment – the gift ‘us.’”

When asked about her proudest moment in public service, Comptroller Nieshalla responded, “Sharing the evidence that Indiana is in a strong fiscal position with a balanced budget and AAA credit rating – that is a privilege. But I can’t just speak to those highlights without sharing my grave concern for the $35.8 trillion debt and continued deficit spending at the federal level.

“As the Chair to the National Debt Crisis Task Force for state financial officers, we have drafted a letter to members of Congress to be sent out soon stating our strong support for them to develop and implement a long-term plan to restore our nation’s financial solvency.”

Since taking office last December, Comptroller Nieshalla remains committed to serving state and local governments by upholding the highest standards of fiscal responsibility through accurate accounting of state funds and distribution of local tax revenues, along with providing the State’s financial data within the Indiana Transparency Portal.

Fair Housing public meeting 11/12

The City of Evansville Department of Metropolitan Development and City Consultants & Research, LLC, will host a Fair Housing public meeting on November 12, 2024, at 6:00 p.m.

The meeting will be held in the CK Newsome Center.

Evansville residents are encouraged to attend the meeting and share their experiences about housing conditions in Evansville with officials. These officials and residents will be able to discuss potential strategies that can make housing more accessible in Evansville.

Along with this discussion, those in attendance can expect to learn more about housing barriers in Evansville.

In September, the City of Evansville released a Fair Housing Survey to hear directly from residents. This survey aimed to obtain candid, honest feedback about residents’ experiences with housing discrimination issues. This survey will be open until November 23, 2024.

Community members who can not attend the public meeting are encouraged to respond to the survey.

The Fair Housing Survey can be found at surveymonkey.com/r/YJ8V3CF.

The survey, along with the November 12th meeting, is a continued effort to make sure that resident concerns are heard.

“The push to make housing more accessible is one of the many ways that city officials are making Evansville a city that works for all residents,” said Kolbi Jackson, Executive Director of the Department of Metropolitan Development. “It is important to us to ensure that we are addressing housing concerns that come directly from citizens.”

All Evansville residents are invited to this meeting to share, learn, and collaborate.

Media with inquiries about this meeting may contact Joe Atkinson Mayor’s Office Communications Director at jatkinson@evansville.in.gov or (812) 436-4965.
