0
The Evansville Otters have signed outfielder and former University of South Carolina Gamecock Anthony Amicangelo to a contract for the 2021 season.
Amicangelo is from Bremerton, Wash. and heads into his first professional season.
“I am very excited to start my professional career and thankful to the Otters for giving me the opportunity,” Amicangelo said. “I want to show the organization, teammates, and fans that I am a hard worker. I want to show that I take care of my business on and off the field.”
“I want to play in Major League Baseball someday, and I have been fortunate enough to see up close what it takes to get there. I want to prove I belong and can help us win games.”
In his latest baseball season, Amicangelo is coming off a 2020 spring season at the University of South Carolina, where he made five starts in 14 games played before the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.In those 14 games, Amicangelo batted .280 with three doubles and four runs in 25 plate appearances.
Meanwhile, the Otters have also sent outfielder Hunter Cullen to the Gary Southshore Railcats of the American Association in a sign-and-trade deal to complete a previous trade.

Scammers Are Stealing Hoosiers’ Identities To Claim Unemployment Benefits

0

A growing number of scammers are filing claims for unemployment benefits using other people’s names and identities, Attorney General Curtis Hill said today. Over the course of 2020, he said, the Office of Attorney General has recorded an exponential increase in the number of consumer complaints involving this type of fraud.

The scammers are stealing personal information such as dates of birth, Social Security numbers and home addresses — and routing benefit payments to accounts over which the scammers have control.

“These deceivers steal the identities of others, who are generally employed, in order to file fraudulent claims,” Attorney General Hill said. “If someone uses your name in this fashion, you may learn about it from your employer or from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, which processes unemployment claims. In many cases, payments may already have been regularly deposited into someone else’s account by the time you learn of the fraud.”

From April 18 to May 18 this year, the Office of the Attorney General received just three unemployment-related identity theft complaints. Cases trended upward throughout 2020, and from Oct. 18 to Nov. 18, the office received 157 such complaints.

Certain patterns seem to indicate the scammers are targeting the identities of people they know are busy working during the COVID-19 pandemic, Attorney General Hill said, such as doctors, nurses and others in health care.

While the wrongfully taken funds come from the public treasury, the person whose identity has been stolen by scammers can also suffer negative consequences. Besides having fraudulently filed for unemployment benefits, the scammers might also have the personal information needed to gain access to victims’ bank and other accounts as well.

In addition, if left unresolved, these instances of fraud could interfere with people’s legitimate efforts going forward to apply for unemployment benefits should they lose their jobs.

If you learn that your identity has been fraudulently used in a claim for unemployment benefits, you should report it to the Office of the Attorney General via this online form for reporting identity theft.

Additionally, you should report it to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development via that agency’s website. Finally, you should also file a report with local law enforcement and the Indiana State Police, which offers an online form that that can be filled out and emailed to uifraud@isp.IN.gov.

Supporting Hoosier children, families
Indiana continues to make great strides in supporting our most vulnerable Hoosiers, from newborn babies and their mothers, to children in the child welfare system.
For example, we are working to ensure Hoosier moms and babies have access to critical resources before, during and after birth. Our efforts are paying off, and for the first time in our state’s recorded history, Indiana is experiencing the lowest infant mortality rate. Expectant mothers in Indiana can call the Maternal and Child Health’s Moms Helpline at 1-844-624-6667 to connect with local resources and support.
Recently, I joined lawmakers in increasing funding for the Indiana Department of Child Services, limiting social workers’ caseloads and allowing young Hoosiers to receive foster care services through the age of 21. Gov. Eric Holcomb also established an adoption unit within DCS to help our most vulnerable throughout the state. Hoosier families are also stepping up in a big way and opening their hearts and homes to kids in need. With nearly 2,500 Hoosier youth adopted through DCS last year, Indiana now ranks first in the nation for its increase in the number of adoptions from foster care.
We know a child’s education is critical to their success, and all of our students deserve a quality education. Did you know? More than half of the state’s biennial budget is dedicated to K-12 education. We are building on our commitment to students by including a historic investment of $763 million in new money, bringing the total two-year funding for education to more than $17 billion.

Our Streak Continues

This Election Day was all about extending winning streaks for Indiana Republicans. Of course, after an election is when the real work of governing begins. That’s why it was an honor this week to chair caucuses for our super-majorities in the Indiana House and Senate. In a year when many observers were predicting we would lose seats in the statehouse, we added a net of four seats in the House and held our super-majority in the Senate.

In the House Todd Huston was reelected Speaker and in the Senate, Rod Bray will again serve as President Pro Tem.

While it was relatively quiet in Indiana, there is much going on across the country. President Trump and his team continue to look at each state’s election results to ensure that they are accurate and only comprised of legally cast ballots. As a member of the RNC, I know that his team will have the resources needed to complete this process.

And in Georgia, the two Republican Senate candidates and their teams are preparing for runoff races. There is information below on how you can help. These two races will decide the control of the critical US Senate. Please help if you can!

We Need Your Help in Georgia

Hoosiers won the home game, easily. Now we need a road win.

If Democrats get control of the Senate, with Nancy Pelosi already caving to the demands of the socialist Squad in the House, we’ll see a radical, left-wing agenda like never before. Packing the Supreme Court, abolishing the Electoral College, The Green New Deal, statehood for Washington DC, de-funding the police, and all the other left-wing wish list items will be one step closer to happening.

This is where you come in. Can you volunteer a weekend or two for Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler between now and the runoff on January 5?

Hoosiers willing to deploy to Georgia and volunteer by making calls and knocking on doors to save our country should fill out the link below.
Expenses such as flights, hotels, and meals will be covered for trips a weekend or longer. The runoff is January 5th, so you can go anytime from now until then.

Evansville Civic Theatre Is Asking For Your Help To “Save Civic Theatre.”

After 95 years of serving the Evansville community, Evansville Civic Theatre is in danger of closing its doors permanently due to lack of revenue during the COVID-19 pandemic. That’s why, today, ECT officials launched the “Save Civic Theatre” campaign, asking the public’s help to keep this Evansville institution alive and thriving beyond the pandemic.

“For generations, Evansville Civic Theatre has been the place where our community came together to laugh, to cry; to be mystified and to be entertained,” said Lauren Singleton, president of the ECT Board of Directors. “It’s where kids and adults have learned to sing, to dance, or just found a place to belong.

“Now, all of that is another thing we’re in danger of losing to COVID-19.”

The campaign to “Save Civic Theatre” is an attempt to raise approximately $135,000, which would keep the theatre operational through the beginning of the 2021-2022 season in August 2021. These funds would supplement the Paycheck Protection Program loan and an Arts, Cultural & Destination Marketing Organization Grant from the Indiana Arts Commission, which has helped keep the non-profit theatre remain open through 2020. These other funds either have expired or expire on December 31.

Full details of how the theatre will use funds raised can be found at:

“Left Jab” And “Middle Jab” And “Right Jab” November 26, 2020

0

“Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” was created because we have a couple of commenters that post on a daily basis either in our “IS IT TRUE” or “Readers Forum” columns concerning National or International issues.

The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give our more opinionated readers exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and Middle Jab and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “LEFT JAB” is a liberal view, “MIDDLE JAB” is the libertarian view and the “RIGHT JAB is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments in this column is free to do so.

Rural Opportunity Zone Initiative now open for second round

0

The Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs, in partnership with the Purdue Center for Regional Development (PCRD), announced today a second round of the Rural Opportunity Zone Initiative, which provides technical assistance and capacity-building support to rural areas with Opportunity Zones.

“The goal with this initiative is to equip the leadership in rural opportunity zones with necessary materials to attract capital to their designated areas,” said Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch. “By maximizing their potential, these sites will be positioned to be competitive with opportunity zones from urban areas.”

In 2018, Gov. Eric Holcomb nominated 156 Indiana Opportunity Zones with the help of an advisory group from around the state. The Office of Community and Rural Affairs completed an initial assessment of the zones and determined 46 sites are rural opportunity zones. Last year, OCRA completed the first round of the Initiative which included the following counties: Crawford, Daviess, DeKalb, Knox, Newton and Switzerland.

“Up to six spots are available for communities to apply through a competitive process. Only rural opportunity zones locations are eligible to apply,” said Matt Crouch, Interim Executive Director of OCRA.”Once communities complete this process, their leadership walks away with resources and a complete prospectus to better them attract investment.”

The purpose of this initiative is to build the capacity of Opportunity Zones in rural Indiana to attract private, public and/or philanthropic sector investments that support locally driven priorities. This program is funded by a Rural Business Development Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Indiana.

“The PCRD team is pleased to join forces with OCRA on the second round of the Rural Opportunity Zones Initiative. This partnership ensures that communities taking part in this important effort will have an array of key resources available to guide and support their local Opportunity Zone planning efforts,” said Dr. Bo Beaulieu, Professor of Rural and Regional Development with Purdue University.

Selected communities will receive technical support resulting in the completion of a prospectus to attract investment. Additional support may include:

  • Guidance in establishing a task force;
  • Proprietary data products that profile types of properties in the area;
  • Assessment of key economic drivers;
  • Profile of existing businesses and companies in the zone and surrounding areas;
  • Transportation infrastructure and connectivity;
  • Discovering the area’s community/economic development assets;
  • Suitability analysis; and
  • Mapping of broadband services in the zone; and more.

The goal of the Opportunity Zone initiative is to encourage long-term private capital investment in low-income urban and rural communities. The program offers long-term federal tax deferral on capital gains for investments in designated zones, with additional tax exclusion from new capital gains achieved from those investments.
