MVC finalizes 2020-21 men’s basketball schedule
League to utilize new format for this season
ST.LOUIS – With non-conference season underway for the 2020-21 college basketball season, the Missouri Valley Conference portion of the schedule is set to begin in less than a month. In an effort to provide the ten league institutions with the safest environment to conduct their seasons, the MVC has announced a new format for this season.
In order to limit travel as much as possible, the traditional home-and-home schedule will be changed this season to a back-to-back format. Each conference school will play four teams at home and four on the road with the travel partner having one game played at each location. The majority of these series will take place on Saturday and Sunday with a few exceptions.
With the attendance limitations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Purple Aces fans can follow the team through the UE Athletics App and the ESPN3 and ESPN+ platforms. The app will be your exclusive home for the digital game program, which will be released for all home games. It also features game updates, exclusive offers and breaking news. The ESPN app is your home for most UE conference contests. It gives you the best seat in the house to follow Evansville all season long.
One of the aforementioned exceptions takes place in the opening week of the conference season when the Aces open up with a pair of games at Southern Illinois. In order to avoid the possibility of teams having to travel on Christmas Day, these contests will be held on Sunday, December 27 and Monday the 28th.
UE’s first home series is set for January 2 and 3 when UNI comes to town. That series will be held on a Saturday and Sunday, as will be the case with each one until the final weekend of the year. Evansville remains home on Jan. 9/10 with contests against Illinois State.
The weekend of Jan. 16/17 pits the Aces at Bradley before the first travel partner game will see UE head to Terre Haute for a game on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at Indiana State. The weekend of January 23 will be held open in the case of any postponements.
Valparaiso will be at the Ford Center for games on Jan. 30 and 31 before the UE squad takes to the road for consecutive weekends. The Aces will be at Loyola on February 6/7 before continuing on to Drake for contests on the 13th and 14th.
Evansville’s final three games are set to be played at home, beginning with a Wednesday, Feb. 17 game versus Indiana State. Following another open weekend, the Aces welcome Missouri State in the regular season finale. Those games are slated for Friday, Feb. 26 and Saturday the 27th. The 2021 State Farm MVC Tournament will take place from March 4-7 at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis.

Turner, Eagles roll past Stars despite slow start
USI (3-0, 3-0 GLVC) went 0-for-7 throughout the first five minutes of the contest; but trailed just 2-0 heading into the first media timeout. The Screaming Eagles, however, outscored the visiting Prairie Stars (1-1, 1-1 GLVC), 10-2, throughout the remainder of the opening period to build a 10-4 lead heading into the second stanza.
Turner scored nine of her team-high 13 points in the second period as USI extended its lead to 20-4 midway through the quarter.
USI, which led 32-13 at the break, got three points from Turner in an 8-0 run that extended the Eagles’ lead to 40-13 just over two minutes into the third quarter.
In addition to Turner, the Eagles got 10 points apiece from sophomore forward Hannah Haithcock (Washington Courthouse, Ohio) and sophomore guard Addy Blackwell (Bloomington, Indiana). Senior guard Emma DeHart (Indianapolis, Indiana) added eight points for the Eagles, who got scoring contributions from 10 different players.
Sophomore guard Malea Jackson and junior guard Lauren Ladowski had 20 and 16 points, respectively, to lead the Prairie Stars, who fell to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in GLVC play.
USI’s defense in the first half ended up being the difference maker as the Eagles held the Stars to just 6-of-29 (.207) from the field and 1-of-10 (.100) from three-point range in the first 20 minutes. Illinois Springfield missed its first four shots of the third quarter and was just 6-of-16 (.375) from the field in the frame as USI removed all doubt about the outcome of the contest.
The Eagles, who improved to 20-0 all-time versus Illinois Springfield, return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host GLVC East Division rival Lewis University at Screaming Eagles Arena. The Flyers (2-1, 2-1 GLVC) earned an 80-74 road win over the University of Indianapolis Thursday evening.
COVID-19 Cases, Deaths, And Hospitalizations Continue To Climb
COVID-19 Cases, Deaths, And Hospitalizations Continue To Climb

INDIANAPOLIS —Changes to quarantine guidelines could help people in vital jobs like healthcare or education return to their job a few days sooner, easing the burden on overworked colleagues as the COVID-19 pandemic shows no sign of slowing.
Dr. Kristina Box, state health commissioner, discussed the new guidelines issued this week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at Gov. Eric Holcomb’s weekly press briefing on the pandemic Wednesday.

Under the new guidelines, quarantine can end after 10 days for individuals that do not have symptoms or a test, down from the original 14 days that had been recommended. The quarantine can end after seven days if the individual tests negative on days five, six, or seven and does not have symptoms.
“I really think that this is going to help us get more kids back in school sooner, so I’m very excited about that,†Box said of the new guidelines. “And I think it’s going to give comfort to our healthcare workers who are going back more quickly.â€
Box also announced that the soaring number of COVID-19 cases has led the health department to revise its script that contact tracer use to find out where the disease may have been spread. The script has been shortened so callers spend less time on the phone with the person who tested positive so they can reach more people.
On Wednesday alone there were 6,655 new cases of COVID-19 in the state and 91 new deaths. This brings the total since the onset of the pandemic to 350,970 cases and 5,688 deaths in Indiana. Box noted the 285 additional probable deaths in the state since the beginning of the pandemic.
“That’s almost 6,000 Hoosiers who aren’t here this year because of this virus,†Box said. “Each of these individuals has a name, a face, and a family who loves them and is grieving.â€
Hospitalizations remain high, with 3,441 people in the hospital. This is the second largest number of hospitalizations in the state due to COVID-19.

Officials are bracing for another wave because the numbers do not show the impact of Thanksgiving gatherings, Box said. Those cases are expected to show up a week to 10 days after the holiday.
But in spite of all the bad news there is hope. Dr. Lindsay Weaver, the health department’s chief medical officer, provided an update on the vaccines expected to be available to some groups before the end of the year.
The first wave of the vaccine will be administered to a smaller group of healthcare providers with high-risk patients as well as long-term care residents. Weaver will provide more detailed information at the press conference at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9.
Box urged Hoosiers to get a vaccine as soon as it available to them. As she has done throughout the pandemic, Box stressed the importance of wearing a mask, social distancing and follow other safety measures.
Holcomb said it is impossible to do enough to slow the spread of the virus and that controlling it depends on individual compliance with safety measures.
“We will never be able to do enough,†Holcomb said. “No state, no country in the nation will ever be able to do enough, and every loss of life, every chair that is empty this Thanksgiving is heartbreaking.â€
As the distribution of the vaccine nears, the Indiana State Medical Association, Indiana Hospital Association, and Indiana State Nurses Association reminded Hoosiers in a press release to continue to practice safety protocols and pledged to follow a safe, transparent and effective process for administering the vaccine.
“Based on limited supplies in the first round of distribution, our initial goal is to protect those with the most risk of exposure, prevent them from giving it to vulnerable populations, and reinforce our healthcare workforce by preventing illness,†the release said. “Until Indiana has been broadly immunized, we continue to urge Hoosiers to wear a face mask, practice social distancing, wash your hands, and stay home when you are sick.â€
