Year-End Appeal Letter From Willard Library

Willard Library loves our patrons. Fortunately, even during a pandemic, we found ways to safely serve our patrons and to be the first library in the Evansville area to reopen; first for curbside service, and then directly to the public.

As the oldest public library in the State of Indiana and one of the oldest libraries in the Midwest, Willard is unique among cultural icons in the City of Evansville—everything from its historic architecture and rare and expansive local history archives, to its engaging programs for children and adults. The Library Board of Trustees and the Library Staff felt strongly that it was important for people to have the solace of these touchpoints during these difficult times.

Although like most other people, businesses, and organizations, 2020 was far from the expected, there is good reason to believe that 2021 will be better.

During the past year, Willard engaged a market research firm to conduct a market survey to help us determine what the successful library of the future should look like. They spoke with staff, board members, patrons, local citizens, and library industry experts.  What do our patrons want to see?  What services do they want?  Thanks to their responses, a veritable roadmap has been created to guide programming, eBook collections, outreach, a new, already created garden area and outdoor reading plaza, an exciting partnership with local schools, and even better ways in which Willard can interact with you.

You can be a part of this future success with your gift to Willard.  By making your contribution today, you can become part of Willard Library’s rich history.  Your gift to the Willard Library Foundation will help launch this future outlined above by visiting our secure website at: https://willard.lib.in.us/donate/donate-online

Aces to open Ford Center slate on Wednesday

0

UE welcomes Eastern Illinois

Playing its latest home opener in over 25 years, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team will take to the Ford Center floor for the first time this season when the Purple Aces face Eastern Illinois at 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening.  ESPN+ and the Purple Aces Radio Network will have the broadcast.

Home Opener

– Evansville’s Dec. 9 home opener is the latest since the 1994-95 campaign when the Aces took on Illinois State in a Dec. 10 opener, winning by a 78-51 final

– Interestingly enough – that was the Aces first game as members of the Missouri Valley Conference

– The 10th season of play at the Ford Center commences with Wednesday’s game – through nine openers at the venue, UE is 8-1 with the lone setback being a 56-50 loss to Buffalo in 2012

Last Time Out

– Four Aces players set career marks last Wednesday in a 93-87 double overtime loss at UT Martin

– Trailing for most of the game, the Aces rallied to take a 3-point lead in the final minute before a UT Martin triple at the buzzer sent the game to overtime where they would eventually win in two extra periods

– Noah Frederking led Evansville with 22 points while Shamar Givance (17), Jax Levitch (15), Thomasi Gilgeous-Alexander (11) and Gage Bobe (9) all set the career scoring marks

Looking Back

– For the second game in a row, the Aces face a team for the first time since the 2015 CIT Championship run

– In the second game of that tournament, UE traveled to Charleston, Ill. to face the Panthers where they earned a dominant 83-68 win

– D.J. Balentine led UE with a game-high 22 points while Egidijus Mockevicius recorded 21 points and 16 rebounds

Setting the Scene

– Wednesday’s home opener pits the Aces against EIU, who enters play on a 2-game win streak following a double overtime win at Green Bay on Saturday

– Despite an 0-3 mark, the Aces have numerous bright spots following the first three games of the season

– Noah Frederking is 5th in the MVC averaging 16.3 PPG and is coming off of back-to-back 20+ point games while Jax Levitch has risen to a tie for third in the league with 7.0 rebounds per game

– The Aces look to end a 22-game losing streak, the longest in program history

20-20

– Entering his senior season, Noah Frederking had just one 20-point game to his credit at UE, but he has come out on fire in 2020 with consecutive efforts of 20 or more

– He finished with 20 versus Prairie View A&M before pouring in 22 at UT Martin where he was 8-of-13 from the field and 6-of-9 from outside

– Frederking ranks 5th in the MVC with 16.3 points per game and is second with 3.3 triples per contest

– Over the final 16 games of the year, Frederking was looked upon to log some big minutes, playing 26.6 minutes per game over that span; he ranks second thus far in 2020 with 35.0 minutes per contest, a tally that is third in the Valley

– Last season, Frederking finished the year shooting 31% from outside, but has been much more efficient this season, checking in at 47.6% – one of the top percentages in the league with at least 20 attempts (10-of-21)

– He paces the conference with a perfect 100% free throw total (7/7)

Making an Impression

– Thomasi Gilgeous-Alexander set career marks in nearly every category at UT Martin including: points (11), field goals (4), attempts (6), rebounds (5), assists (4) steals (1) and minutes (20)

– The redshirt freshman was limited to six minutes over the span of three games last season due to injury but has improved this year as his playing time has increased

– Gilgeous-Alexander has played at least 14 minutes in all three games thus far

– He posted three rebounds and two helpers against PVAMU

Well That Didn’t Take Long

– Gage Bobe continues to take full advantage of his increased playing time this season

– At UT Martin, Bobe played 22 minutes and set his scoring high with 9 points, all coming from outside where he was 3-for-4

– The walk-on logged 16 minutes of work in the opener at Louisville

– As a freshman – he played 12 minutes over the entire season

– Bobe connected on his first field goal against Prairie View A&M

Scouting the Opponent

– Eastern Illinois comes to the Ford Center riding a 2-game win streak

– Following a tough road swing that saw them travel to Wisconsin, Marquette and Dayton, the Panthers rebounded with wins over Chicago State and Green Bay to move to 2-3 on the season

– On Saturday, EIU outlasted the Phoenix in double overtime, 93-91

– Josiah Wallace sits atop the Panther squad with 17 points per game and is coming off of a stellar 27-point outing at Green Bay

– Wallace was 9-for-16 from the field and hit 9 of his 11 free throw tries

– Mack Smith and Marvin Johnson are tied for second with 9.2 PPG

USI Women’s Basketball hosts McKendree Saturday

0

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball has just one game on tap for this week as it hosts McKendree University Saturday at 1 p.m. at Screaming Eagles Arena. The Screaming Eagles are looking to add to their 4-0 start to Great Lakes Valley Conference play when they host the Bearcats, who are 1-2 to begin the 2020-21 campaign.

Saturday’s game is the first half of a men’s and women’s doubleheader at Screaming Eagles Arena as USI Men’s Basketball’s game against McKendree has been put back on the schedule after the Center for Disease Control (CDC) amended its COVID-19 quarantine guidelines from 14 days to 10 days last week.

USI WBB Notes (12/8)
• Schedule change. The USI-Quincy basketball doubleheader that was originally scheduled for January 6 is being moved up a day to January 5 due to travel concerns.

• USI begins divisional play with two wins. USI Women’s Basketball continued its winning ways last week with a 63-49 win over Illinois Springfield and a 63-52 win over Lewis at Screaming Eagles Arena. Senior guard Emma DeHart paced the Eagles with 11.0 points and 4.5 assists per game, while sophomore guard Addy Blackwell chipped in 9.5 points and 3.0 assists per contest. Sophomore forward Hannah Haithcock also added 9.5 points per game, while leading USI with 9.5 rebounds per outing.

• Season leaders. DeHart leads USI with 16.3 points and 3.3 assists per game, while Blackwell is chipping in 11.3 points and 3.3 assists per contest. Haithcock is contributing 10.3 points and 9.8 rebounds per appearance, while Blackwell is averaging a team-high 2.3 steals per contest.

• Deeper look into USI-UIS. USI was held scoreless throughout the first five minutes of the game, but a stout defensive effort helped USI stay in the contest as it trailed 2-0 heading into the first media timeout. USI proceeded to go on a 20-2 run and led 32-13 at the intermission before an 8-0 run to open the second half put the Eagles in front, 40-13, removing all doubt about the game’s outcome.

• Eagles rally past Flyers with another strong defensive effort. USI held Lewis to just one fourth-quarter field goal en route to the 11-point win. The Eagles trailed 41-32 four minutes into the third period, but a 31-11 run throughout the contest’s final 16 minutes saw the Eagles hold the Flyers to just 2-of-20 (.100) from the field and 1-of-13 (.077) from three-point range.

• Speaking of defense. The Eagles currently rank amongst the top five in the nation in scoring defense as they have held their opposition to a league low 52.8 points per game throughout the first four games of the season.

• Turner gets first career start. Senior center Audrey Turner, who racked up a career-high five blocks in USI’s win over William Jewell two weeks ago, got her first career start in USI’s win over Illinois Springfield. She rewarded Head Coach Rick Stein‘s decision by scoring a career-high tying 13 points.

• Career highs. In addition to Turner’s career-high scoring tally, four other Eagles also posted career-high efforts. Haithcock had a career-high 13 rebounds against Lewis, while senior guard Ashley Hunter pulled down an NCAA career-high six rebounds against Lewis. DeHart matched a career-high with five assists against Illinois Springfield, while junior forward Ashlynn Brown dished out a career-high four assists against the Prairie Stars. (note excludes freshmen)

• USI ranks among Division II’s best in several categories. USI women’s basketball enters the week ranked in the top 10 of 10 different NCAA statistical categories. USI, one of 17 undefeated teams, leads the nation in free throw attempts and is second, nationally, in free throws made. USI ranks third in the nation in both scoring defense (52.8 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (.314).

• Roaring 20s. Senior guard Emma DeHart reached the 20-point plateau twice during the opening weekend after entering the year with one career 20-point game. USI had five different players reach the 20-point plateau a year ago, including DeHart and sophomore forwards Tara Robbe and Hannah Haithcock.

• Double-figures. USI has already had seven different players reach double-figures in the scoring column this year after having nine players reach double-figures a year ago. Eight of those players had multiple games with at least 10 points, while USI has already had three players with multiple double-digit games in 2020-21.

• About McKendree. Junior guard Sydney Diekhoff averages 12.0 points per game to lead the Bearcats, who are 1-2 overall, 1-2 GLVC, this season after going 12-16 overall and 5-15 in GLVC play a year ago. Senior guard Madison Jones is contributing 11.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game for McKendree, which suffered a 68-62 home loss to Indianapolis Saturday after earning a 62-55 road win over Missouri S&T Thursday.

• Last year (round 1). USI rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit to take the opener, 71-66, last December in Lebanon, Illinois. Morgan Sherwoodhad a career-high 16 points to lead the Eagles, while Jordan Heberg had a career-high 29 points to lead the Bearcats in the first meeting.

• Last year (round 2). In the second meeting, Audrey Turner racked up a then-career-high 13 points, seven rebounds and four blocks to lead USI to a 72-51 win at Screaming Eagles Arena in January. Turner had nine of those points in a dominating second-half performance that saw the Eagles outscore the Bearcats, 41-24. Ashley Johnson had 14 points and five steals to pace the Eagles, while Madison Hart finished with 13 points and 10 boards to lead McKendree.

• #STATSforSCOTT. The Bearcats, along with the entire GLVC, are mourning the loss of long-time McKendree sports information director Scott Cummings, who lost his battle with cancer last week. Cummings, who joined McKendree Athletics in August of 1999, was a “mentor to many and friend to all” in the words of McKendree interim AD Anthony Francis.

• Record book watch. The Eagles have one player making moves inside the USI Women’s Basketball Record Books:
–Emma DeHart has jumped nine spots to No. 34 all-time at USI with 713 career points. She began the year ranked No. 43 but has made the big jump during the first four games of the year thanks to a strong start. DeHart needs just three points to move into 33rd all-time.

• Magic Mark: 75 points. The Eagles are 420-77 (.845) all-time when scoring at least 75 points. USI is 293-28 (.913) since 1996-97 when reaching the 75-point plateau.

“RIGHT JAB AND MIDDLE JAB AND LEFT JAB” DECEMBER 9 2020

0

“Right Jab And Middle Jab And Left Jab” was created because we have a couple of commenters that post on a daily basis either in our “IS IT TRUE” or “Readers Forum” columns concerning National or International issues.

The majority of our “IS IT TRUE” columns are about local or state issues, so we have decided to give our more opinionated readers exclusive access to our newly created “LEFT JAB and Middle Jab and RIGHT JAB”  column. They now have this post to exclusively discuss national or world issues that they feel passionate about.
We shall be posting the “LEFT JAB” AND “MIDDLE JAB” AND “RIGHT JAB” several times a week.  Oh, “LEFT JAB” is a liberal view, “MIDDLE JAB” is the libertarian view and the “RIGHT JAB is representative of the more conservative views. Also, any reader who would like to react to the written comments in this column is free to do so.
