USI Women’s Basketball adds pair of transfers

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball has added pair of transfers from Northern Illinois University, signing Shannon Blacher, a 5’10” guard from Burr Ridge, Illinois, and Madelyn Fay, a 6’1″ forward from Palatine, Illinois.

“We are extremely excited to welcome Maddy and Shannon to our team and our USI family,” USI Women’s Basketball Head Coach Rick Stein said. “They are both a great fit with our program, culture, and style of play.  We take pride in recruiting really good players, really great students, and outstanding people who can and will make an impact on our team right away.  Their high-level experience, work ethic, leadership, and skills will impact our team on both ends of the court.”

In two seasons at Northern Illinois, Blacher played in 52 games. Blacher netted 58 points on 33 percent shooting. Blacher corralled 67 rebounds and dished out 39 assists while totaling 12 steals.

Before attending Northern Illinois, Blacher played at Montini Catholic High School. Blacher was named all-state twice and all-conference three times. Blacher was ranked as the No. 22 player in Illinois in the class of 2023 by Prep Girls Hoops.

Fay also played in 35 games in her first two collegiate seasons at Northern Illinois. Over the last two seasons, she tallied 40 points on 65 percent shooting while pulling down 50 rebounds for the Huskies.

Prior to Northern Illinois, Fay played at Fremd High School in Palatine, where she was an all-state honorable mention and two-time regional champion. Fay played club basketball for Illinois Elite between 2021-23.

Trailblazer trio to play next season at IU-Kokomo

VINCENNES, Ind. – Vincennes University baseball sophomores Bradyn Douglas (Frankton, Ind.), Nate Montgomery (Lexington, Ind.) and Corbin Napier (Indianapolis, Ind.) announced their plans to continue their athletic and academic careers next season at NAIA Indiana University-Kokomo.

Bradyn Douglas has served as a constant presence in the Trailblazer lineup this season, playing in 61 of VU’s 62 games as the Trailblazers everyday second baseman and leadoff hitter.

Douglas closed out his Trailblazer career with an outstanding sophomore season, finishing the year with 76 hits, a .355 batting average and a .428 on-base percentage.

Douglas came away with nine doubles on the season, one triple and proved to be a tough out by only striking out 19 times in 253 plate appearances.

Douglas was a constant on the base paths for the Trailblazers this season, recording a hit in 17 of his last 18 games played, including going four for four in a game one victory over Spoon River College.

Douglas finished his two seasons in the Blue and Gold with a total of 114 hits, including 17 doubles, two triples and one home run with a .329 batting average and a .432 on-base percentage.

“Knowing that Coach Honaker is a well known coach across the state gives me the confidence that we will have success both as a team and personally,” Douglas said. “Being able to get an IU degree all while getting to continue to play baseball is hard to beat. Plus, it will be nice to be back closer to home as IUK is only 50 minutes from my hometown.”

“I would say my favorite memory would be my parents being able to be there when I got my 100th career hit against Danville Area,” Douglas added. “Athletically, I have learned a lot about the game from Coach Barney. He has gotten me a lot more at bats than I would have gotten anywhere else. Academically, I have learned a ton about business. All of the professors have made sure I understand the concepts and how it relates to real world scenarios.”

VU sophomore Nate Montgomery was another constant presence in the Trailblazer lineup, serving as Vincennes’ left fielder and batting third in 60 games this season for the Blazers.

Montgomery closed out an outstanding sophomore season with 59 hits, including seven doubles and 39 runs batted in with a .309 batting average and a .424 on-base percentage.

Montgomery finished his Trailblazer career with 85 hits, eight doubles, 51 runs batted in, a .317 batting average and .438 on-base percentage.

“I really enjoyed visiting their campus and hearing about the academic opportunities they offer,” Montgomery said. “I also have heard great things about the Head Coach and know that he is leading the program in the right direction.”

“My favorite memory at VU is going three for three in my first career start at home,” Montgomery said. “Athletically and academically, Vincennes University has allowed me to understand that I can take on anything that comes my way and make it to the other side.”

Corbin Napier played in 56 games this past season for the Trailblazers as a first baseman, third baseman or designated hitter.

Napier recorded 58 hits, 40 runs batted in with a .317 batting average, .373 on-base percentage with nine doubles, one triple and one home run as a sophomore.

 

Southern Indiana Review poet honored as Midwest Book Awards Finalist

Natalie Louise Tombasco was the recipient of Southern Indiana Review’s (SIR) Michael Waters Poetry Prize in 2023 where she was awarded $6,000 and publication of her book Milk for Gall. Now, Tombasco is being recognized as a Midwest Book Awards Finalist in the Poetry and Graphic Novels – Debut category.

The Midwest Book Awards are presented by the Midwest Independent Publishers Association (MiPA), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting independent publishers in the Midwest. The awards are open to all books published in the Midwest in the previous year.

“To have Milk for Gall honored as a Midwest Author’s Award finalist is a significant achievement that reflects the impact of the work we do at Southern Indiana Review Press to bring important new voices, like Natalie Tombasco’s, to readers here and nationally,” says Rosalie Moffett, Assistant Professor of English. “The Midwest Book Awards is a rich place for poetry—every year, scores of exciting books are published by authors in our region.”

“As part of USI’s literary editing and publishing minor, I had the exclusive opportunity to work alongside SIR editors on Natalie Louise Tombasco’s Milk for Gall.” says Denise McKenzie, USI English student.

Vincennes University, 3M collaborate to expand hands-on training at Area 31 Career Center

INDIANAPOLIS, May 19, 2025 – Vincennes University is excited to announce a dynamic new community partnership with 3M, marked by a $178,000 grant to significantly enhance hands-on technical training opportunities for Indiana high school students. This investment enables the purchase of 10 state-of-the-art Mechatronics trainers to be installed at the Area 31 Career Center, equipping students with cutting-edge tools to prepare for in-demand careers in manufacturing, automation, and engineering, along with certified training for the instructors.

 

“What VU is doing at Area 31 is exactly what technical education should look like – real world skills, industry standard equipment, and students learning by doing,” said Chad White of Festo Didactic.

 

A check presentation and celebration at Area 31 commemorated the collaboration between 3M, VU, and key workforce and education partners. The event included remarks from institutional leaders, policymakers, program partners and demonstrations showcasing the new equipment.

 

Director of the VU Center for Applied Robotics and Automation Kimberly Wright said, “Partnerships like this are essential in closing the skills gap and empowering young learners with opportunities that truly prepare them for the future of work. With the support of 3M, and the excellent faculty at Area 31 in our Early College programs, we’re able to provide students direct access to real-world technologies and career pathways that lead to high-wage, meaningful jobs.”

 

The advanced Mechatronics trainers—developed by leading automation company Festo—mirror the technology used in modern smart factories, giving students hands-on experience with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), sensors, and automation controls found throughout the industry.

 

“Adding these Mechatronics trainers expands our capacity to serve more students and deepens the level of instruction we can offer,” VU Early College Site Director Maria Srnka said.

 

VU Area 31 Integrated Mechanics Instructor James Duddleston said, “This investment is a game-changer for our students. They are working the same systems they will encounter in the field. The curriculum has come to life, and they can step right into advanced manufacturing roles right out of high school.”

 

This initiative reinforces VU’s commitment to aligning education with workforce needs. As Indiana and the nation face critical shortages in skilled trades, collaborations like this play a pivotal role in building a robust pipeline of highly trained talent.

 

Killer Queen A Tribute to Queen Returns to Evansville on September 30th, 2025

Lead singer Patrick Myers said “It’s been an amazing journey. That first show changed my life. We thought our band would last maybe a summer at the most but it’s a very addictive thing performing these songs. The concerts grew and grew, and we’ve ended up playing and selling out the same arenas that Queen played at their peak. It’s been quite a surreal ride. Becoming regular performers at Red Rocks Arena in America is another highlight. The Beatles, U2, Springsteen, and Dylan all played on that stage. It’s really got its own kind of magic going on there.”

MAGIC YEARS

Killer Queen’s first public shows were at London University, following in the footsteps of the real Queen who had played their first shows there decades earlier.

Killer Queen’s UK popularity grew to such an extent they soon secured a residency in London’s Strand Theatre attracting nationwide BBC coverage – the first tribute to have a show in the West End.

The band’s reputation continued to grow both in the UK and abroad leading to an awards ceremony in Leicester Square, hosted by Suggs from Madness who presented them with the award for “Worldwide Best Tribute Band”. They also scored a number one hit when they were asked to recreate Queen’s harmonies for “The Real Life” with Fatboy Slim.

By now they were in demand in European arenas playing Ahoy, where the now reformed Queen would be performing only a few months later. They were delighted to sell out Forest National Arena where Queen filmed the concert piece videos such as Hammer To Fall and Don’t Stop Me Now.

Killer Queen then joined forces with Bjorn Again and The Bootleg Beatles for a Waverley

Stadium shows in Edinburgh. It was this performance that led to the band being selected to represent Queen in a re-staged tribute Live Aid concert held by Sir Bob Geldof. They performed with him at his arena charity concert to raise funds for the homeless.

In 2016 Killer Queen set their sights on America including the awe-inspiring Red Rocks Arena in Colorado – one of the country’s most prestigious venues. The Beatles, Springsteen, U2 have all played there and the band are delighted it’s become a regular fixture on Killer Queen’s tour sheet.

By 2020 the band were pulling huge arena audiences in Cardiff Motorpoint, Liverpool and Nottingham. 2021 sees them back on the road ready to delight huge audiences the world over.

Leif Moeller signs with Purple Aces men’s basketball

 Moeller has played at the professional level in Germany

 EVANSVILLE, Ind. – With a great deal of professional experience under his belt, Leif Moeller will continue his basketball career with the University of Evansville men’s basketball team.

The 6-foot-7 guard played for three teams in Germany over the last year highlighted by his work with Rist Wedel, a team at the ProB level.  In 14 games with the team, Moeller averaged 12.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game while playing just under 27 minutes per contest.

“We are excited to add Leif to our program.  Leif is a poised led guard with the experience of a collegiate upperclassman,” Purple Aces head men’s basketball coach David Ragland said.

“Leif plays with great pace offensively and is elite in ball screen situations.  He is a pass first guard with the ability to score when needed.”

His top performance came against Bemau where he set season highs in scoring and rebounding.  Moeller scored 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting and a 4-for 8 finish from 3-point range while recording 11 rebounds.  He added 19 points in his next game versus Fellbach.  Moeller registered at least seven points in 13 out of 14 games.

Along with his work at the ProB level, Moeller played on a rotational basis for Veolia Towers Hamburg.  The Towers play in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL), which is the highest tier of professional basketball in Germany.  He played 16 games for the Towers while averaging just under six minutes per contest.  His top scoring effort saw him register seven points versus Weissenfels.

Moeller and the Towers participated in the 2024-25 Eurocup.  The tournament is Euroleague Basketball’s secondary level professional club basketball tournament.  Moeller took part in 16 games while playing over 12 minutes and averaging 2.5 points.  He finished with nine points in 25 minutes against Turk Telecom.

“The three days I was in Evansville felt like home,” Moeller exclaimed. “Everyone made me feel very comfortable.”

In 2021, Moeller played for the U18 German Men’s National Team.  Playing five games for the team, Moeller averaged 6.4 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.  He added an average of 2.2 assists while shooting 45.5% from the field.

USI starts post-season play Wednesday Eagles are 5th seed, take on #8 Little Rock

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — University of Southern Indiana Baseball enters Ohio Valley Conference Championship play for the third-straight season Wednesday when it takes on the eighth-seeded University of Arkansas at Little Rock in the opening game at Mtn Dew Park in Marion, Illinois. First pitch is slated for 9 a.m.

The Screaming Eagles (27-28, 15-12 OVC), which reached the semifinals last season and were eliminated in the opening round in 2023, enter the tournament as the fifth seed, while Little Rock (19-32, 8-16 OVC) is the eighth seed. The winner of this matchup will take on fourth-seeded Southeast Missouri State University (30-24, 16-11 OVC) at 4 p.m.

The other half of the bracket features sixth-seeded Lindenwood University (27-28, 14-12 OVC) versus seventh-seeded University of Tennessee at Martin (20-33, 11-14 OVC) in the 12:30 p.m. game Wednesday. The winner will take on third-seeded Tennessee Tech University (37-19, 18-9 OVC) at 7:30 p.m.

The top-seeded Eastern Illinois University (29-20, 17-7 OVC) and second-seeded Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (26-26, 18-8 OVC) received byes to the double-elimination portion of the tournament Thursday.

The OVC Championship, presented by SERVPRO, runs Wednesday through Saturday (May 21-24) and features the top eight teams during the regular season.

For the fourth year in a row, the bracket includes four single-elimination games on Wednesday, with the winners advancing to the double elimination portion of the bracket, which will include the top two seeds (who receive a bye until Thursday games).

Traffic Advisory for Tuesday Afternoon, May 20

Gibson County – Tuesday afternoon, May 20, Indiana State Police will be shutting down portions of  US 41 near Warrenton Road and I-64 eastbound at US 41 while several hundred motorcyclists stop at Flying J Travel Center located at US 41 and Warrenton Road. The motorcyclists are traveling from California to Washington D.C. to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The motorcyclists are scheduled for a gas stop and brief break at the Flying J Travel Center before continuing east on I-64 to Corydon, IN. The group is expected to arrive at approximately 2:15 p.m. and depart at approximately 3:00 p.m.

Individuals planning to show their support are encouraged to find a safe place off the roadway. Parking along I-64 is prohibited. For more information concerning this event, visit rftw.us.
