Baseball Snaps Three-Game Skid, Hands UIS First Loss of Season

Lopez and Conner propel Eagles with big hits

University of Southern Indiana Baseball broke out the bats to snap a three-game losing streak and open its GLVC season with a 4-1 victory over Illinois Springfield. With the victory, the Screaming Eagles improved to 3-4 on the season while UIS dropped its first game of the season, moving to 4-1.

The Screaming Eagles got on top early following a double by freshman infielder Michael Conner, his third of the season. The freshman Conner brought in fellow freshman, outfielder Steven Molinet, who reached base on a walk, for the first run of the game. Conner gathered three hits in four at-bats on the day along with his one RBI.

Senior outfielder Manny Lopez came through with a big game to help get the Screaming Eagles back on track, amassing three hits on four plate appearances. Lopez crushed his first home run of the season while dropping in two singles and an RBI.

USI extended its lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth with Lopez’s homerun and Wyatt Daly’s single, which brought in Lucas McNew. Daly went one-of-three at the plate with his single, also drawing a walk.  The Screaming Eagles capped off the game with a fourth run in the eighth inning off a hit by Lopez, bringing Trent Robinson, who was pinch-running for Conner, around to home.

The USI defense held up through the bottom of the ninth when the Stars pushed their one and only run through on a wild pitch. Austin Grossman tossed eight innings with three strikeouts to hold off the Prarie Stars, allowing only four hits and one run. Paul Perez entered in the ninth to finish off UIS and struck out one during the inning.

USI returns on Saturday, March 13, for day two against Illinois Springfield with a double-header scheduled for 11 A.M. and 2 P.M.

Utility Payment Help Available

Indiana’s winter disconnection moratorium, which temporarily prohibits electric and natural gas utilities from disconnecting low-income customers, ends March 15.

Hoosiers who face disconnection should contact their utility company as early as possible to negotiate a payment agreement. Many utilities also offer budget billing to assist with consistent monthly payments.

Indiana’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program helps pay electric and heat bills for eligible individuals. Hoosiers should contact their local Community Action Agency to see if they qualify. Click here for a county-by-county directory. Applications for the LIHEAP are available through May 14.

With the negative impacts of the pandemic on top of a cold winter, many families could be struggling to pay their utilities. If you or someone you know needs help, you can also dial 211 to connect to other resources.

Braun Introduces Fix To Stop Democrats From Banning State Tax Cuts

WASHINGTON – In the early morning hours of March 6 as the Senate’s “vote-a-rama” on the $1.9 trillion COVID package ended, Majority Leader Schumer introduced a final amendment which included text that would ban states from cutting taxes until 2024 if they take any federal funds from the package.

Senator Mike Braun today introduced the Let States Cut Taxes Act, a bill to make sure Democrats don’t get away with this scheme to stop states from further opening their economies and allowing Americans to keep more of what they earn through tax cuts.

“Democrats are trying to ban states from cutting taxes with a sneaky amendment to the $1.9 trillion so-called COVID relief package,” said Braun. “Not only did this blue state bailout bill penalize states for reopening by calculating state funds based on unemployment, now they are trying to use it as a back door to ban states from cutting taxes. My bill would make sure they don’t get away with it.”

UE Volleyball Returns Home To Face SIU

Aces And Salukis To meet On Sunday And Monday

Two of the final three series of the regular season will be at Meeks Family Fieldhouse beginning this weekend when the University of Evansville volleyball team welcomes Southern Illinois.  Matches are set for 6 p.m. on Sunday and Monday…ESPN3 will have the action for both contests.

Last Time Out

– Another hard-fought series saw the Purple Aces come up just short, falling by 3-1 finals in both contests at Drake last week

– Alondra Vazquez recorded 32 kills and 32 digs on Sunday…both were career marks in a feat that has happened only a handful of times in NCAA history

– UE looked to be on the cusp of forcing a fifth game, holding a 17-13 lead in game four before the Bulldogs clinched the match with a 26-24 decision

– On Monday, it was the Aces who had the upper hand early, opening the night with a 25-17 win…Drake earned a dominant 25-11 win in the second set and went on to reel off three wins in a row to win by a 3-1 score

1-2 Punch

– Alondra Vazquez and Melanie Feliciano have combined to provide the top 1-2 offensive threat in the MVC

– They have combined for 7.87 kills per set, edging Missouri State’s Brooklyn Cink and Amelia Flynn, who average 7.5

– Vazquez ranks 2nd in the MVC with 4.16 kills per set while Feliciano checks in with 3.71, putting her 6th in the league

– One of them has led the team in kills in each match so far in 2021

 Making History

– In what is believed to be the first such instance in Missouri Valley Conference history, Alondra Vazquez recorded 32 kills and 32 digs on Sunday at Drake

– It is one of fewer than 10 30-kill, 30-dig performances in NCAA history and the first that the MVC has seen…Valparaiso had a 30-assist, 30-dig contest a few years ago

– Both tallies were career highs along with her 83 attempts

– Over her last six outings, Vazquez has recorded 4.8 kills per set while posting at least 20 in three of those games

– The junior currently has an average of 14.00 attacks per set, which leads the Valley and is 2nd in the NCAA

DEAR MR. SCORSESE

GAVEL GAMUT By Jim Redwine

As Martin Scorsese ramps up production for his movie of David Grann’s book, Killers of the Flower Moon, concerning the tragic murders of members of the Osage tribe in and around my home town of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, I thought Mr. Scorsese might appreciate a little movie making advice. Here is some information he may find helpful.

Ten years before Pawhuska’s favorite son, Ben (Son) Johnson, Jr., won an Academy Award for his role as pool hall/movie theatre owner Sam the Lion in The Last Picture Show I sold him a Stetson hat. Son, I called him Mr. Johnson, was home for a visit in Pawhuska, Oklahoma in 1960 and I was working Saturdays at Hub Clothiers Men’s Store on Kihekah Avenue. Son had just that year had a gun fight with Marlon Brando in One-Eyed Jacks.  I am not suggesting I deserve any credit for Son’s later success but I am pretty sure the hat he wore in The Last Picture Show was the one I sold him; it looked about right for wear and tear.

In addition to that association with stardom I would like to point out that one summer during Vacation Bible School my Sunday School teacher at the First Christian Church, Violet Willis, had our class film a re-enactment of the Christmas story. It was in July and we threw up a manger of blankets and black jack posts on the banks of Sand Creek near the falls in Osage Hills State Park. I played a shepherd. Now I know there aren’t too many sheep in Osage County but I thought my portrayal was still pretty authentic. And it may be of note to Mr. Scorsese as he directs his new movie about Osage County that Violet both lived and worked at the Osage Agency and was herself Osage.

My memory is that Violet used an 8-millimeter hand-held Bell & Howell camera and that she cast my friend and classmate, Glenda Van Dyke, as Mary. Glenda was blond haired, blue eyed and ten years old but she pulled off the young Hebrew mother role quite well I thought. I wish Glenda was available for a casting by Mr. Scorsese now.

Another person who might merit consideration is my big sister, Janie. Much as Lana Turner was discovered at the soda fountain of the Top Hat Café on Sunset Boulevard in Burbank, California, Janie used to work at the soda fountain of Mom and Pop Curry’s snack shop next to the Kihekah (now the Constantine) Theatre in Pawhuska. Janie might be of more utility behind the camera as she is good at giving directions.

And although I do not wish to accentuate my own resumé, I think in fairness to Mr. Scorsese I should mention that I did have a role in my high school’s junior play. Further, I am generally available except when Peg has me doing some chore around JPeg Osage Ranch.

Maryland Street Bridge

0

A horse and buggy amble quietly over Pigeon Creek on the new Maryland Street bridge in 1909, soon after it replaced a wooden one that had linked the city to the West Side since the 1880s. In the distance are the Globe Furniture Company and the World Furniture Company, which in 1910 merged with the Bosse Furniture Company to form what was advertised as the “largest furniture manufacturing plant in the world.”

Waves of German immigrants in the nineteenth-century brought their wood-working skills to Evansville, and with the abundance of hardwood in the region, furniture manufacturing became a dominant industry. By 1927, twenty-seven furniture companies operated in Evansville, many of them on the West Side.

As the industry expanded in the early 1900s, businessmen called for a new, wider bridge over the creek to expedite access to the many factories in the area. Some of the buildings in the district are now gone, but enough remain to recognize its footprint.
