Braun, Young Introduce Resolution Honoring 100th Anniversary OF Gymnasium And Museum

0

U.S. Senator Mike Braun and U.S. Senator Todd Young introduced a resolution on the floor of the United State Senate honoring the Hoosier Gym. This basketball gymnasium and museum is located in Knightstown, Indiana and was the filming location for the 1986 basketball movie “Hoosiers”, starring Gene Hackman and Dennis Hopper.

“Every weekend, Hoosiers head to the local gym to watch high school basketball and this resolution honors one of our most iconic gyms where the movie ‘Hoosiers’ was filmed 35 years ago,” said Senator Mike Braun. “Not only am I honored to introduce this resolution on the first day of our boys basketball  state tournament, in a few weeks the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament will descend on Indiana which is a win for local economies throughout the state. My best wishes to all involved in both boys and girls state tournaments this year and appreciate the IHSAA and local school officials working to ensure this class of basketball players get the opportunity to play in our state tournament. A special vote of confidence for the Jasper Wildcats as they make a trip to Evansville this evening!”

“Hoosiers is a classic sports movie, but only because it accurately captured our state’s obsession with basketball from the smallest towns to the largest cities,” said Senator Young. “As we begin the IHSAA tournament and prepare for March Madness, it’s fitting that we honor these milestone anniversaries.”

Todd Rokita Reiterating His Commitment To Protect Hoosier

National Consumer Protection Week is March 1 to March 5

To kick off National Consumer Protection Week, Attorney General Todd Rokita is reiterating his commitment to protecting Hoosier consumers, urging them to report scams and fraudulent business activities to his Office’s Consumer Protection Division.

“Protecting Indiana consumers is a key function of the Office of the Attorney General. I will safeguard our citizens by exposing fraud, holding scammers accountable, and assisting those harmed by deceptive business tactics,” Attorney General Rokita said. “As long as I am Indiana’s attorney general, every week is consumer protection week. We will relentlessly protect consumers from criminals who attempt to scam Hoosiers out of their hard-earned money and we have already taken action to do so.”

Less than two months into his term, Attorney General Rokita has already taken significant actions on behalf of consumers in Indiana. On Feb. 4, Attorney General Rokita announced a major multistate settlement with McKinsey & Company, from which Indiana received more than $12.5 million.

One of the largest consulting firms in the world, McKinsey & Company contributed to the opioid crisis by promoting marketing schemes and consulting services to opioid manufacturers – including OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma – for over a decade. The $12.5 million Indiana received from the settlement will be used to fund prevention, education, and treatment efforts in Hoosier communities.

Attorney General Rokita is also leading a bipartisan, multistate effort to ensure state attorneys general can effectively fight robocalls. The effort is centered on the enforceability of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act – legislation that is integral to keeping consumers safe from robocalls.

Attorney General Rokita’s Consumer Protection Division mediates and investigates complaints against businesses and other organizations. The division also takes legal action on behalf of the state against individuals and companies that violate Indiana’s Deceptive Consumer Sales Act, state and federal privacy laws, and other consumer-related statutes

While the Office of the Attorney General cannot act as a consumer’s personal attorney or provide legal advice to citizens, consumers are encouraged to file consumer complaints if they believe they have been the victim of a scam or fraudulent business activity.

In addition to fielding general consumer complaints, the Consumer Protection Division fields complaints about robocalls, gas gouging, identity theft and mortgage fraud. The Consumer Protection Division also oversees the Indiana Do Not Call List, for which Hoosiers may sign up to eliminate telemarketing calls. Signing up will eliminate most – but not all – telemarketing calls. Under Indiana law, some groups may still contact you.

Attorney General Rokita encourages Hoosiers to review fact sheets on the Consumer Protection Division website about elder financial exploitation, pyramid schemes, safe computing, and other topics. Staying informed is critical to reducing your risk of falling victim to a scam, Attorney General Rokita said.

Aces to play two in Louisville

In its first midweek action of the 2021 season, the University of Evansville softball team travels to Bellarmine for a doubleheader on Wednesday.

The Purple Aces and Knights meet up at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. CT in Louisville.

UE is coming off of a 2-2 weekend against Green Bay.  Evansville’s top offensive player in the 4-game series against Green Bay was Lindsay Renneisen.  The senior batted .444 while leading the Purple Aces with two home runs, five RBI and five walks.  Marah Wood garnered MVC Newcomer of the Week accolades as she batted a solid .364 in the series against the Phoenix.  Wood registered four hits in 11 at-bats while hitting a home run.  She walked three times while scoring twice.

Over the course of two appearances against Green Bay, Izzy Vetter finished with 17 strikeouts and a 1.42 ERA while picking up her second victory of the season.  In Saturday’s opener against the Phoenix, Vetter struck out a career-high 11 batters while allowing just one hit over the complete game 7-inning shutout performance.  She returned on Sunday to throw 5 2/3 frames where she gave up two runs on four hits while striking out six batters.  Overall, Vetter threw 12 2/3 innings over the weekend while giving up two runs on five hits while walking just two batters.

Bellarmine stands at 2-2 on the season.  The Knights picked up two wins over Western Michigan last weekend while falling to Morehead State in its other two games.  Alexis Hargrove is their top batter, checking in at .571 with four hits in seven at-bats.  She has scored three runs.

DeHart, Haithcock earn All-GLVC honors

University of Southern Indiana senior guard Emma DeHart (Indianapolis, Indiana) and sophomore forward Hannah Haithcock (Washington Courthouse, Ohio) have been named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Basketball teams in a vote by the league’s 15 head coaches.

DeHart was named to the first team, while Haithcock was named second-team All-Conference.

A second-team All-GLVC honoree as a junior last season, DeHart led the Screaming Eagles in 2020-21 with 16.1 points and 3.3 assists per contest. She hit double-figures in the scoring column 13 times this season, reaching the 20-point plateau four times and recording a career-high 39 points in USI’s  96-86 overtime win over Rockhurst University last month in Kansas City, Missouri.

Her 39 points against Rockhurst were the most for a USI Women’s Basketball player since Amie Newhart dropped in 39 points in a triple-overtime game against Indianapolis in January of 2011 and tied for the third-most in program history, only trailing LeAnn Freedland’s historic two-game stretch in which she put up 50 points two-days after scoring 46 in January of 1995.

Haithcock, who earned GLVC All-Freshman team honors a year ago, is collecting All-Conference accolades after averaging 12.0 points and a team-high 6.9 rebounds per appearance during the regular-season.

This season, Haithcock racked up three double-doubles and reached double-figures in the scoring column 11 times, including a career-high 22 points in USI’s 73-67 home loss to Truman State University in January.

In addition to DeHart and Haithcock, senior center Audrey Turner (Fishers, Indiana) was USI’s recipient of the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award, which goes to 15 student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through ethical behavior. Recipients of this award also must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

USI finished the regular season with an 11-5 record and was the No. 3 seed in this week’s GLVC Tournament before withdrawing due to COVID-19 Return to Play protocol. The Eagles, who are under consideration for an NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament berth, will learn their post-season fate when the NCAA reveals its selections Sunday night on NCAA.com.

*Note: DeHart’s 39-point performance against Rockhurst were the most by a USI Women’s Basketball player in a road win and tied Freeland for the most points in a win. Newhart’s 39-point effort came in a one-point loss and Freeland’s 50 and 46-point efforts came in back-to-back losses. Freeland scored 39 points in USI’s 101-71 home win over IPFW in February of 1997.

The caller told dispatch that her residence had been struck multiple times by gunfire. When officers arrived they were able to find multiple shell casings on the roadway in front of the residence. The caller’s residence had 6 occupants inside at the time of the shooting, including children.

While officers were investigating this incident, there was a 911 call made from the 700 block of Ridgeway Ave. requesting an ambulance for a shooting victim who had been struck by gunfire in the left shoulder.
