University Of Evansville Announces 2021 Baseball Schedule

0
Aces to host 35 of 56 games at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium

After a shortened season last spring, University of Evansville head baseball coach Wes Carroll has announced the 2021 slate for the Aces.

The schedule features 56 games with exactly half of the season slate being played in Missouri Valley Conference competition with 28 games coming in Valley play. German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium will truly be home sweet home for the Aces in 2021 as 35 of the 56 games on the schedule are slated to be played at Evansville’s newly renovated confines.

“I am thrilled to finally be able to release our 2021 schedule,” said Aces head baseball coach Wes Carroll. “Obviously there have been significant changes throughout the last couple of months but we have been fortunate to put together a very competitive schedule. We look forward to playing on German American Bank Field at Charles H Braun Stadium for a full year.”

The Aces ended last season on a high note, defeating in-state foe Indiana, 5-4, in the first game following renovations at German American Bank Field. Just days later, the season was ended due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Evansville will look to utilize the momentum built at the end of last season when they open the 2021 campaign against SEC powerhouse Georgia in Athens on February 19, 20, and 21. The Aces and Bulldogs will match-up for the first time since 1996.

On February 26-28, the Aces mark their home opener, welcoming NIU to German American Bank Field for a three-game set, beginning a stretch of five of six weekends at home.

A midweek contest against another SEC foe in Kentucky on March 2, splits a pair of weekends at home. Evansville comes back home for the weekend of March 5-7 for a four-game set against Western Illinois, a team the Aces swept when they last met in 2018.

The MVC slate will look slightly different this season with the Conference increasing weekend series in The Valley to four game sets as opposed to the three-game series played in previous seasons. Conference play begins March 12-14 as Evansville travels to face Southern Illinois on the road in Carbondale.

Beginning a set of three-straight home weekends, the Aces take on Butler for a four-game series on March 19-21. Last season, Evansville took all three contests from the Bulldogs in a series played at Bosse Field.

For a second-straight weekend, Evansville is challenged by a team from the Big East as Xavier comes to the River City for four games from March 26 to 28. Closing-out its homestand, the Aces face South Dakota State on April 2-4, a team Evansville has faced just twice, capturing a pair of wins over the Jackrabbits in 2005.

The stretch of MVC weekends begins on April 9-11 as the Aces head to Peoria, Ill. to face Bradley. After the weekend series against the Braves, the Aces bring Missouri State into German American Bank Field from April 16 to 18.

Back on the road, Evansville challenges Illinois State on April 23-25 before returning home for back-to-back home series. Preseason 24th-ranked Dallas Baptist represents the next hill for the Aces on April 30-May 2 as the calendar flips to May.

As the regular season wanes, Evansville and Southern Illinois meet for the second time this season, this time in a non-conference series from May 7 to 9 in Evansville.

The final road weekend of the season takes place from May 14-16 as Evansville makes the trip to Valparaiso.

Evansville closes the regular season and celebrates senior weekend on May 20 through 22 when Indiana State comes to German American Bank Field for four games.

The 2021 MVC Baseball Championship takes place in Carbondale, Ill., hosted by SIU, beginning on May 26 and ending with a champion crowned on May 29.

USI Softball Picked To Finish Second In GLVC

0

University of Southern Indiana Softball has been picked to finish second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2021 by the league’s 15 head coaches.

The nationally-ranked No. 17 Screaming Eagles, whose opening weekend at the Blue Bridge Battle in Owensboro, Kentucky, was postponed, received 170 points and a pair of first-place votes and trailed league-favorite University of Indianapolis, which received 190 points and four-first-place votes.

USI edged out the University of Missouri-St. Louis, which received 162 points and five first-place votes, while the University of Illinois Springfield (157 points/2 first-place votes) and Maryville University (135 points) rounded out the top-five picks.

Lindenwood University (127 points/1 first-place vote) and Drury University (112 points/1 first-place vote) were picked to finish sixth and seventh, respectively, while Rockhurst University (98), Truman State University (91) and Lewis University (90) rounded out the top 10 choices.

William Jewell College (84), Quincy University (53), McKendree University (45), Missouri University of Science & Technology (40) and Southwest Baptist University (21) rounded out the poll.

The Eagles, who went 15-4 in the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, return 12 players, three pitchers, and six starters from last year’s squad.

Head Coach Sue Kunkle, who enters her 20th year leading the Eagles with a 563-386-1 overall record, has the unenviable challenge of replacing four-time All-American Jennifer Leonhardt inside the pitcher’s circle. Leonhardt, the most outstanding player of the 2018 NCAA II Championship, graduated as USI’s all-time leader in career wins (83), strikeouts (787) and complete-game shutouts (35).

Kunkle will rely a trio of talented pitchers to fill the void left by Leonhardt in the circle. Juniors Katie Back (Indianapolis, Indiana) and Elissa Brown (Brownsburg, Indiana) showed marked improvement from their 2019 freshmen campaigns. Back was 3-1 in the circle with a 2.84 ERA and .234 opponent batting average a year ago, while Brown was 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA.

Sophomore pitcher/infielder Allie Goodin (Evansville, Indiana) went 4-0 in the circle with a 2.47 ERA and 26 strikeouts during her rookie campaign. She also hit .385 with five doubles, a home run and 10 RBI.

USI also got a big performance from another freshman last year as infielder Rachel Martinez (Chicago, Illinois) hit .356 with four doubles, two triples, a home run and 10 RBI.

Leonhardt was one of three seniors lost a year ago and Kunkle will turn to a pair of seniors in 2021 to carry on the torch of success this season. Outfielders Alicia Webb (Elberfeld, Indiana) and Jessica Tucker (Georgetown, Kentucky) were freshmen when the Eagles won the 2018 national championship and have been members of two NCAA II Tournament teams during their tenure at USI.

Webb, a 2019 All-GLVC performer, hit .286 with two doubles, a triple two home runs and eight RBI a year ago. Tucker played in 13 games, making 12 starts, a year ago. She hit .207 with three RBI.

Kunkle and the entire USI family is thrilled to have junior catcher Courtney Schoolcraft (Crest Hill, Illinois) back in the fold again in 2021. Schoolcraft overcame radiation treatments in the Fall of 2019 to start all of USI’s 19 games behind the plate a year ago. She hit .278 with five doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI and 14 runs scored.

USI also brought in three talented freshmen this season that have a chance to make immediate impacts on the Eagles’ lineup. Outfielder Mackenzie Bedrick(Brownsburg, Indiana), an All-State honoree, hit .531 as a junior in 2019 at Brownsburg High School, racking up 39 career RBI, 11 doubles, two triples and a home run.

Catcher/infielder Lexi Fair (Greenwood, Indiana) helped lead Center Grove High School to the IHSAA Class 4A state tile as a junior, hitting .343 with seven doubles, a triple, six home runs and 29 RBI, while third baseman Emma Herron (Indianapolis, Indiana) graduated from Franklin Central High School with a .323 career batting average, 18 doubles, two home runs a triple and 41 RBI.

Following this week’s postponement, the Eagles are now set to begin the season February 19 when they take on Wingate University in a doubleheader in Dahlonega, Georgia. USI takes on No. 2 University of North Georgia in a doubleheader February 20 in Dahlonega before visiting No. 6 Young Harris College for a single game the following day in Young Harris, Georgia.

The Blue Bridge Classic has been rescheduled for February 26-28 in Owensboro, while USI is set to host the Midwest Region Crossover March 5-7 at Deaconess Sports Park in Evansville, Indiana.

USI finishes the Midwest Region Crossover with No. 25 Grand Valley State University March 7, before opening GLVC play against No. 21 Indianapolis March 14 at the USI Softball Field. The Eagles are scheduled to play 14 conference games at the USI Softball Field and a total of 28 conference games throughout year. (Note: Fan attendance throughout the season is to be determined. Most of USI’s conference games will be aired live on the GLVC Sports Network, while 95.7 The Spin also will carry select games on the radio.)

The GLVC Tournament returns to the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Illinois, May 6-9, while the NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament is May 13-15. The NCAA II Midwest Super-Regional is May 20-21, while the NCAA II Softball Championship is May 27-31 in Denver, Colorado.

Gov. Holcomb Now Accepting Applications for Fellowship Program

0

INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Eric J. Holcomb announced today that applications will be accepted through March 15 for the 2021–2022 Governor’s Fellowship.

The Governor’s Fellowship is highly selective and provides a unique experience in Indiana state government by placing fellows in various state agencies on a rotating basis throughout the year.

“Our Governor’s Fellows are such a valuable piece of our team,” Gov. Holcomb said. “The wide range of assistance they provide over the course of their fellowship is key to serving Hoosiers in a timely and thorough manner.”

The program is open to college graduates who receive their bachelor’s degrees beginning in the fall of 2019 through the spring of 2021. Fellows are paid, full-time employees who participate in the day-to-day activities of state government.

Many Governor’s Fellows have gone on to successful careers in both the public and private sectors—with some serving at the highest levels of local, state and federal government.

The application and submission guidelines can be found online at https://www.in.gov/gov/governors-office/governors-fellowship-program/. To be eligible for consideration, the application and all supporting materials must be postmarked or submitted via email by March 15.

Applicants should know if they have been selected for an interview no later than April 15. Recipients of the Fellowship will begin July 1.

If you have questions about the fellowship, contact Emily Clancy at the Governor’s Office at eclancy@gov.in.gov.

Indiana Department of Transportation Named Owner of the Year by Engineering News Record Midwest

0

The editors of Engineering News Record (ENR) have named the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) as 2020 Owner of the Year for ENR Midwest. ENR is a leading news publication for the engineering and construction industries across the country. Each year ENR identifies and recognizes project owners for excellence in planning, design, construction and project management of large-scale construction projects.

“Our unprecedented commitment to infrastructure continues to receive national attention, both from industry experts and from job creators” Governor Eric J. Holcomb said. “A long-term, fully funded plan for maintaining our highways, historic investment in local roads and determination to deliver on transformational projects like I-69 and expanding the South Shore Line are making Indiana an even better place to do business and create jobs.”

“Despite all of the challenges of living and working during a pandemic, the Indiana Department of Transportation made 2020 a great year for infrastructure,” Jeff Yoders, ENR Midwest Editor, said. “The editors of ENR are proud to name INDOT ENR Midwest’s Owner of the Year.”

“Our INDOT team, along with our consulting and contracting partners, are working harder than ever to deliver high-quality transportation improvement projects as safely as possible and at the best value to Hoosiers,” Joe McGuinness, INDOT Commissioner, said. “I am pleased that ENR chose to recognize Indiana for its leadership in building and maintaining our transportation network.”

Highlights from INDOT’s 2020 include:

  • Record $2.08 billion investment in more than 1,400 capital construction projects on Indiana’s state highway system and $462 million investment in 560 local road, bridge, sidewalk and trail projects through Governor Holcomb’s Next Level Roads plan.
  • Approximately 750 bridges reconstructed or rehabilitated and replaced approximately 700 centerline miles of pavement on the state highway system.
  • Traffic impacts from COVID-19 allowed INDOT to rephase approximately 20 state highway construction projects. The most significant rephasing involved a project to replace about 75 miles of pavement and 28 bridge decks on I-70 in Indianapolis. INDOT authorized contractors to close all lanes in the construction in one direction at time to complete work faster. This rephasing reduced the project completion time by three months and saved taxpayers approximately $3.5 million.
  • I-69 Finish Line (Section 6). Indiana is in the final stage of the longest interstate extension project currently under construction in the country. I-69 Finish Line is the sixth and final section of the Interstate 69 connection between Evansville and Indianapolis. The project upgrades the existing State Road 37 to interstate standards from Martinsville to Indianapolis. The project eliminates more than 200 at-grade crossings and driveways, constructs or rehabilitates over 70 bridges, builds 35 miles of new local access road connections and adds 10 new interchanges. The I-69 extension is the realization of 75 years of studies and discussion about an improved, multi-lane highway connecting southwest Indiana. The route will reduce crashes in the region by more than 1,300 annually and generate a $4.1 billion economic impact over 20 years. When work is complete, I-69 will run continuously from the Canadian border at Port Sarnia, MI to Evansville, IN, with Indiana an important piece of the planned national corridor.
  • I-65/I-70 North Split Reconstruction. The project is reconstructing the I-65 and I-70 interchange located in downtown Indianapolis. As one of the most heavily traveled interchanges in Indiana, many structures have exceeded their service life after nearly 50 years in operation. The approximated $383 million project is replacing 32 aging bridges and 27 miles of pavement. When complete, the North Split project will reduce congestion, improve safety for the community and travelers, and provide a maintenance-free infrastructure for decades to come. Comprised of four sections — the south leg, west leg, east leg, and interchange — this design-build project will replace all pavement, reconfigure the interchange into three levels, eliminate two ramp movements, replace numerous bridge structures, install a new drainage system, improve local streets, replace ITS facilities, and provide new aesthetic and landscape features.

USI Women’s Basketball Notes (2/9/21)
• DeHart lifts Eagles to much-needed win.
Senior guard Emma DeHart scored a career-high 39 points to lift USI Women’s Basketball to a much-needed 96-86 overtime win over Rockhurst Saturday. DeHart, who was 10-of-15 from the floor, 6-of-8 from three-point range and 13-of-16 from the free throw line, scored 28 of her 39 points in the final 15 minutes, including 11 points in the overtime period, as USI snapped a three-game losing streak.

• More on DeHart’s 39 points. DeHart’s 39 points marked the first time a USI player has gone for 30-or-more points in a single game since Morgan Dahlstrom scored 34 in USI’s 64-51 win over Illinois Springfield February 8, 2018. Her 39 points also tied Amie Newhart and LeAnn Freeland for third on USI’s all-time single-game scoring list.

• Overtime and 90 points. USI’s win over Rockhurst marked the first overtime contest for the Eagles since defeating McKendree, 75-73, March 2, 2019. The 96 points USI scored marked the first time since January 18, 2018 the that Eagles have reached the 90-point plateau and were the most for the Eagles since they put up 99 against Missouri S&T February 2, 2017.

• Eagles finish 1-2 on week. The Eagles’ win over Rockhurst gave them a 1-2 mark on the week. USI began the week with a 69-61 loss at Quincy last Tuesday before falling to William Jewell, 70-58, last Thursday.

• Weekly leaders. DeHart averaged 21.7 points and 3.3 assists per game to lead the Eagles, who played all 11 of their players in uniform a minimum average of nearly eight minutes per contest on the week. Sophomore forward Hannah Haithcock added 12.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, while sophomore guard Soffia Rieckers chipped in 8.7 points and 2.7 steals per outing.

• Stark difference. After shooting just 28.1 percent (18-64) from the field in its loss to William Jewell, the Eagles’ shooting woes continued in the first period against Rockhurst as they went 3-of-16 (.188) from the floor. However, the Eagles rebounded to make 30-of-48 shots (.625) to finish the contest with an overall .516 shooting percentage.

• Three-game slide. USI’s three-game losing streak was its longest regular-season slide since dropping 10 in a row during the 2015-16 season.

• USI in national poll. The Eagles dropped out of the WBCA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and are no longer receiving votes in the D2SIDA Top 25 Media Poll following last week’s losses to Quincy and William Jewell.

• GLVC Point Ratings System. The Eagles remained No. 3 in the latest GLVC Point Ratings System (PRS) ranking, which determines the eight teams that will compete in the GLVC Tournament in March. The Eagles have a rating of 3.97, trailing Truman State (4.30) and Drury (4.17). Lewis (3.75) and Lindenwood (3.38) round out the top five, while Missouri-St. Louis (3.33), Indianapolis (3.28) and Illinois Springfield (3.071) round out the top eight teams.

• Season leaders. DeHart leads USI with 16.5 points and 3.3 assists per game, while Haithcock is averaging 12.6 points and a team-high 7.1 rebounds per contest. Sophomore guard Addy Blackwell is contributing 9.0 points and a team-high 1.8 steals per outing. Senior center Audrey Turner leads USI with 0.9 blocks per contest.

• Roaring 20s. DeHart has reached the 20-point plateau four times this year, while Haithcock has one 20-point effort under her belt. USI had five different players reach the 20-point plateau a year ago, including DeHart, Haithcock and Robbe.

• Double-figures. USI has had nine different players reach double-figures in the scoring column this year, with eight players having had 10 or more points in multiple games.
