BREAKING NEWS: Archie Miller Fired After Four Seasons As Indiana Basketball Coach

Archie Miller Fired After Four Seasons As Indiana Basketball Coach

March 15, 2021 Dustin Dopirak IUBB 0

Archie Miller has been fired after four seasons at Indiana, according to a source close to the department. Jeff Goodman of Stadium reported the news first.

The Hoosiers failed to make the NCAA Tournament in Miller’s fourth year, finishing 12-15 with six straight losses to end the season. Miller was 67-56 in his four years at the helm with a 33-43 record in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers were 20-12 in the 2019-20 season and would have made the NCAA Tournament had the event not been cancelled. They didn’t make it in any of his other three seasons.

Miller is owed a buyout of approximately $10.35 million — 100 percent of his remaining salary with three years still remaining on his seven-year contract.

UPDATE: Indiana released a statement confirming the firing. The important upshot is that IU athletic director Scott Dolson says the buyout and transitional cost will be paid through private donations. The statement follows:

STATEMENT FROM INDIANA UNIVERSITY VICE PRESIDENT AND DIRECTOR OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS SCOTT DOLSON

“As the Director of Athletics, I wanted to wait until the conclusion of the season before evaluating the leadership of our men’s basketball program. In the days following the completion of our season in the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament, I have spent a great deal of time evaluating our recruiting, student-athlete development, leadership development, and playing philosophy and strategy. That review, combined with the on-court results, ultimately led me to conclude that a change in leadership of our program is warranted at this time. I shared my assessment with Indiana University President Michael McRobbie, and he accepted my recommendation.

I want to thank Archie Miller, his staff, and their families for their service and commitment to IU and for his unwavering commitment to our student-athletes, the men’s basketball program and Indiana University. We wish Archie and his family all the best in the next steps of their journey.

Given the university’s very tight financial situation in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, private philanthropic funding has been obtained for all transition costs and obligations related to the change in leadership. We worked to secure the necessary private support following my recommendation to President McRobbie, ensuring that there would be no charges to the university budget.

Indiana Basketball has a long, rich history of success that dates back generations. Our five national championships and 22 Big Ten titles make us one of the most accomplished programs in college basketball history. I have high expectations for our program, and we have not competed at a level within the conference or nationally that I believe we should.

While I will not establish a formal search committee, I will consult within the University and with trusted experts in the state and around the country as I seek out and recruit a new coach. The work to find the next leader of Indiana Basketball will begin immediately, and I will seek a chief executive that I can partner with to reestablish the brand and national presence of Indiana Basketball.”

Shooting 20 S. Denby

0

On March 15, around 1:30 a.m. the Evansville Police Department was called to 20 S. Denby for an altercation.  They were updated with info before arriving that a male had been shot.  The suspect, Jacob Rivera (18) was waiting for officers on the front porch and was taken into custody without incident.

The victim had been shot in the upstairs apartment, in the leg.  His wound did not appear to be serious.

The witness, who lives at 20 S. Denby, invited the victim over as a guest when Rivera showed up uninvited.  Rivera started going through the witnesses belongings and taking items.  She then asked Rivera to leave but he refused. He went through her drawers and found a handgun, then took it.

The victim tried to help get Rivera out of the apartment when he fired the gun, striking the victim. Rivera was interviewed at Police Headquarters then taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail where he was charged with Battery Committed with a Deadly Weapon (Level 5 Felony) and Battery with Bodily Injury (Class A Misdemeanor).

USI lose series and game at UIS, 8-5

University of Southern Indiana Baseball missed a chance to get a series split by falling to the University of Illinois Springfield, 8-5, Sunday afternoon in Springfield, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles go to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the GLVC, while Illinois Springfield is 7-1 overall, 3-1 GLVC, after today’s action.

The Eagles started off on the right foot by posting three-spot in the top half of the opening frame. Junior shortstop/third baseman Ethan Hunter blasted a two-run shot to put USI up 2-0, while sophomore catcher Lucas McNew pushed the third tally across with a sacrifice fly.

Illinois Springfield, however, would erase the USI advantage with one in the first and three in the second to lead, 4-1. The Eagles and the Stars would trade runs in the fourth and fifth, leaving the USI down, 6-5, after the halfway mark. This would be as close as USI would come in the final four frames as Illinois Springfield sealed the 8-5 victory with a pair of tallies in the seventh.

USI junior right-hander Brady Bowling took the loss in relief for the Eagles. Bowling (0-1) allowed one run on one hit in an inning on the mound. Freshman right-hander Tyler Wheeler started and got the no-decision, allowing four runs on five hits in one-plus inning.

Up Next for the Eagles:
The Eagles returns to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field next weekend (March 19-21) when they host Quincy University for a four-game series. Live coverage can be accessed through GoUSIEagles.com.

Quincy has the advantage in the all-time series, 45-38, after the series was canceled last season due to COVID-19. The Hawks won the last GLVC series with the Eagles, taking two-of-three in 2019.

Late goals give USI’s Santoro 100th career win

Sophomore forward Zach Barton (St. Louis, Missouri) and junior defender Colten Walsh (St. Louis, Missouri) scored goals in the 73rd and 84th minutes of the game as University of Southern Indiana Men’s Soccer rallied from a one-goal second-half deficit to defeat visiting Truman State University, 3-2, in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at Strassweg Field.

The win gives USI Head Coach Mat Santoro his 100th career victory, making him the first soccer coach, men or women, to reach the 100-win plateau in school history.

USI (3-2-0, 3-2-0 GLVC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as senior forward Graham Miller (Owensboro, Kentucky) found the back of the net in the 20th minute. Sophomore midfielder Brian Winkler (Philpot, Kentucky) and junior midfielder Ryan Nevins (St. Peters, Missouri) each picked up assists on the goal.

Truman State (1-4-1, 1-4-1 GLVC) answered with a tally 10 minutes later to tie the score at 1-1, while its goal in the 72nd minute put USI in a brief 2-1 hole.

Barton, however, answered with a break-a-way goal just over a minute later following a long pass from sophomore forward/midfielder Dan Hartman (Seymour, Indiana). The goal was Barton’s third of the weekend and team-best fifth of the year.

Walsh gave the Eagles the 3-2 advantage with a header in the 84th minute following a nice crossing pass from Winkler, who ended the day with a pair of assists.

Between the posts, senior goalkeeper Justin Faas (Carmel, Indiana) earned his third straight win after picking up a pair of saves in 90 minutes of work.

USI returns to action Friday at 7:30 p.m. when it takes visits William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri.
