Vazquez and the Aces earned a series sweep over SIU

A huge series sweep over Southern Illinois was not the only big news of the week for the University of Evansville volleyball team.  On Tuesday – Purple Aces junior Alondra Vazquez was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week for her efforts against the Salukis.

Vazquez had a spectacular week of action in leading the Aces to the two league victories.  The junior recorded an average of 5.57 kills and 4.43 digs per set while accumulating four service aces, six block assists and one solo.  On top of that, she hit a strong .327 in the victories.

The outside hitter opened the weekend with a 22-kill, 19-dig effort.  In the win, Vazquez hit .290 while posting a solo block and four block assists.  Two service aces also finished off her stat sheet.  On Monday, Vazquez put forth another excellent contest, registering 17 kills and 12 digs.  She had a pair of block assists and two service aces.  Vazquez hit .385 in the winning effort.

She sits alone at the top of the MVC offensive rankings with 4.32 kills per set.  Her average ranks 33rd in the nation while her total of 268 kills is 15th in the country.  She has a total of 871 attempts in 2021, which also leads the Valley and is fifth in the nation.  Perhaps even more impressive – she has accumulated 231 digs, ranking 73rd in the NCAA.

A trip to Illinois State is up next for the Aces, who face the Redbirds on Sunday and Monday in a pair of 4 p.m. contests.

Morning Crash on SR 62 Claims the Life of Chandler Woman

Warrick County – This morning at approximately 7:30, Indiana State Police, Warrick County Sheriff’s Office and Chandler Police responded to a three-vehicle crash on SR 62 at Epworth Road that claimed the life of a Chandler woman.

Preliminary investigation revealed a tractor-trailer had stopped on SR 62 eastbound just west of Epworth Road due to a red traffic signal. Sheila Shofstall, 70, of Chandler, was driving her 2007 Kia and was also stopped on SR 62 behind the tractor-trailer. Dense fog was in the area and visibility was limited. Vernon Knepp, 44, of Washington, was driving a 2011 Ford pickup truck pulling a utility trailer eastbound on SR 62 and failed to notice traffic was stopped at Epworth Road. Knepp’s vehicle struck the rear of Shofstall’s Kia pushing it forward and into the rear of the trailer. After Knepp’s vehicle struck the right rear of Shofstall’s vehicle, the pickup truck and utility trailer continued to travel east sideswiping the right side of the tractor-trailer before coming to a final rest east of the intersection. Shofstall was pronounced dead at the scene. Knepp was transported to Ascension St.

Vincent Hospital in Evansville where he is currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer, Jermaine Canada, 48, of Birmingham, AL, was transported to Deaconess Gateway in Newburgh where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. A passenger in Knepp’s vehicle was not injured.

The eastbound lanes of SR 62 between I-69 and Epworth Road were closed for approximately 3 ½ hours while troopers investigated the crash. The investigation is continuing.

Investigating Officer: Master Trooper Lockridge, Indiana State Police

Assisting Officers: Master Trooper Huddleston, Master Trooper Puskas, Detective Greer, and Trooper Lukeman

Assisting Agencies: Warrick County Sheriff’s Office, Chandler Police, Ohio Township Fire Department, Chandler Fire Department, Warrick EMS, and Warrick County Coroner’s Office

BREAKING NEWS: Holli Sullivan Named Indiana’s Secretary Of State By Governor Holcomb

Holli Sullivan Named Indiana’s Secretary of State By Governor Holcomb

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Rep. Holli Sullivan has been named Indiana’s next Secretary of State.

Sullivan, who has been serving as state representative for District 78 in the Evansville area, succeeds Connie Lawson, who resigned the position two years early.

“Taking office, the top priority for me is to safeguard Indiana’s record of free, fair and secure elections, ensuring that all Hoosiers know their vote counts,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan also said her office will work to protect Hoosiers from financial scams, financial hardships and fraud and work toward cutting red tape.

Sullivan has been representing the Evansville in the Indiana House since 2014 and had a background in engineering process management.

In the legislature, Sullivan has served on House committee including rules, roads and transportation and the budget-making ways and means committee.

During Sullivan’s tenure in the Indiana General Assembly, she worked with the Secretary of State’s office to pass legislation funding critical local cybersecurity improvements in time for the 2020 elections. She’s also worked with the office’s auto dealer services division to modernize Indiana Code through legislation.

Sullivan began her career in management at General Motors, where she oversaw more than 100 employees in the auto giant’s paint division. Then holding a similar role for Toyota’s Indiana manufacturing operation, she supervised production quality and staffing across the company’s Hoosier plants. From there, Sullivan launched her own consulting firm, Onward Consulting, and began working with the University of Southern Indiana at the school’s Center for Applied Research.

Sullivan earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri and has continued her education in business management at Lindenwood University.

“Indiana has become a leader in election transparency and election integrity. I’m extremely confident in Indiana’s elections and I hope you are too,” Sullivan said of the state’s current election landscape and called the 2020 election cycle “well-run.”

“I’m thrilled Rep. Holli Sullivan has accepted this new leadership role for I know she will serve Hoosiers with the same intellect, integrity and energy she brought to the General Assembly,” Holcomb said. “Secretary of State Sullivan hits the ground running, building on the remarkable work Hoosiers have come to expect from the office during Connie Lawson’s historic tenure.”

Lawson announced Feb. 15 that she would step down down two years shy of the end of her term. Lawson said the 2020 election term took a toll, leading to an early retirement, but that she would work with her replacement to get them up to speed.

Lawson had been originally appointed to the office in March 2012 following the conviction of Charlie White for perjury, theft and voter fraud. She was re-elected in 2014 and 2018 before stepping down this year.

In her first public appearance at the appointment press conference Tuesday, Sullivan deferred specific questions about any tweaks or changes she would want to see in Indiana election law, although she said she looked forward to continuing working with her now-former colleagues at the Statehouse to “defend” the electoral process.

In response to a question about mail-in voting — Indiana allowed no-reason absentee voting in the delayed June primary but not in the November general election — Sullivan did indicate she’d maintain the current rules.

“There is a strong balance between in-person and mail-in voting and I think that balance needs to be there,” she said.

She declined commentary on a question about whether she perceived any issues with the 2020 election result on a national level, instead stating she would be “hyper-focused on Indiana” and that Hoosiers should trust in this state’s process.

“When I look at Indiana I have the utmost confidence in Indiana’s elections,” she said.

“Representative Sullivan will serve Hoosiers well in her new role. She has shown exceptional leadership skills in regards to our elections in her time at the Statehouse, where she has served on the House Elections and Apportionment Committee, and worked with the Secretary of State prior to the 2020 election to fund critical cybersecurity improvements. While I will miss having her as my hometown representative, I know all Hoosiers will benefit as she becomes Indiana’s next Secretary of State.”

Olympic gold medalist Lilly King claimed two more NCAA titles during the last contested NCAA Championships (2019) in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke events, giving her eight NCAA crowns in her illustrious collegiate career, becomes the first woman in NCAA history to win eight breaststroke crowns.

Indiana has won 10 titles over the last six championships – the most prolific stretch of any Big Ten team in history. IU is also the first squad in league history to win at least one national title in six-consecutive seasons.
