ISU finish with 3-0 victory

NORMAL, Ill. – University of Evansville junior Alondra Vazquez posted a match-high 17 kills on Monday with the Purple Aces volleyball team falling at Illinois State by a 3-0 final at Redbird Arena.

Vazquez added 10 digs to her kill tally on the way to a double-double.  Melanie Feliciano was next up for UE (5-13, 4-12 MVC) with nine kills while adding 10 digs.  Rachel Basinski led the way with 16 digs while Cecilia Thon posted 16 assists.  Brooke Springer posted a solo block and four block assists while Chloe Bontrager matched Springer’s assist total.  Sydney Holt led the ISU (11-5, 9-3) offense with 13 kills while Stef Jankiewicz had 41 assists.

Game 1

Illinois State had an excellent start, recording the first five points of the match before going up 7-1.  Evansville used a balanced attack to make its way back.  Down 11-6, the Aces saw five different players record a kill with Melanie Feliciano, Hannah Watkins, Alondra Vazquez, Chloe Bontrager and Brooke Springer helping UE storm back to tie it up at 11-11.  ISU countered with four in a row, but the Aces fought back once again to get back within a point at 17-16.  The Redbirds slowly regained control from there, finishing with a 25-20 decision.

Game 2

Evansville once again found itself in an early hole with Illinois State jumping out to a 5-1 lead.  Trailing by a 12-8 score, UE scored five in a row to take its first lead of the set.  Chloe Bontrager got it started with a kill before Vazquez added one to cap off the streak.  Eight ties ensued, leading to a 22-22 score.  Evansville scored the next two points, but could not get the clincher.  The Redbirds took advantage, outlasting UE by a 28-26 final to open up a 2-0 lead.

Game 3

In a close battle in the early portion of the set, the Redbirds were the first to extend the lead, breaking a 4-4 tie to go up 9-5.  The Aces got back within two (11-9) thanks to an ISU service error, but the Redbirds had the upper hand, extending the lead before earning a 25-19 win to seal the match.

Eryn Gould named MVC Player of the Week

0

Senior reached base 83.3% of the time versus Loyola

 ST. LOUIS – Eryn Gould slugged 1.800 and reached base 83.3% of the time in the University of Evansville softball team’s series against Loyola and was recognized on Monday as the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week.

Gould’s efforts helped the Purple Aces earn the series victory over the Ramblers with UE taking the final two games of the series.  The Mt. Carmel, Ill. native finished with a .833 on-base percentage over the weekend.  She reached base with six walks, three of which were intentional, while also being hit by a pitch.  Gould batted .600 with three hits in five at-bats but made the most out of those changes, belting two home runs while tallying six RBI.

In Saturday’s opener, the senior was walked on three occasions.  That tied for the conference’s highest mark by a player in a game this season.  In the second contest, she garnered another walk, but took full advantage of the pitches that were thrown her way, going 2-3 with a grand slam that lifted UE to a 7-3 victory.  On Sunday, another home run was pivotal to Evansville clinching the series.  Her 2-run home run in the 5th inning added some important insurance that helped UE finish with a 7-4 triumph.  She also walked two more times in the game.

The last time Gould earned a MVC Player of the Week accolade was on April 22, 2019.

Evansville’s homestand continues on Wednesday with a 5 p.m. contest against SIU Edwardsville inside Cooper Stadium.

Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch announced that the Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) and the Division of Disability and Rehabilitation Services (DDRS) have opened Round 2 of the Community Connections for People with Disabilities (CCPWD) grant program. Awardees are eligible for up to $200,000 in funding.

The CCPWD grant encourages Indiana cities, towns and counties to partner with local community disability organizations in developing innovative activities that address COVID-19-related barriers to community inclusion.

“It is critical that Hoosiers work together to ensure all people are included as Indiana pushes through the pandemic, as we get back to normal and as more in-person interactions resume,” Crouch said. “With 11 different Hoosier communities already awarded funding, this round will further assist individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities.”

(Audio available by clicking here)

Round 2 builds upon the success of the initial round of CCPWD funding, expanding the grant opportunity to more local non-profit community disability organizations. Indiana communities applying for Round 2 funding may now partner with the following qualifying non-profit community disability organizations:

  • A developmental disabilities organization enrolled as a DDRS – Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Services provider;
  • An Indiana Center for Independent Living recognized by DDRS;
  • A community mental health center certified by the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction;
  • A community rehabilitation provider enrolled as a DDRS – Bureau of Rehabilitation Services provider;
  • An Indiana Local Education Agency (LEA) currently delivering special education to students aged 18 to 22; or
  • A special education cooperative formed according to IC 20-35-5.

Round 2 of the CCPWD grant also addresses the changing realities of the COVID-19 public health emergency by targeting activities designed to assist Hoosier adults with disabilities in preparing for a return to in-person interactions in the workplace and community. Applicants seeking funding in Round 2 of the CCPWD grant will be asked to develop grant activities addressing:

  • Issues of social isolation and lost access to natural supports (family, friends, etc.); or
  • Issues of lost employment and training opportunities.

The Round 2 CCPWD grant application is now open and will close May 20, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. ET. An informational webinar will be held March 24, 2021 for interested parties.

Round 2 grant awardees will be announced in June 2021.

Round 1 of the CCWPD grant awarded funds to 11 recipients, totaling $1.63 million to implement activities addressing internet access and social isolation.

More information on the CCPWD grant program, including instructions on accessing the March 24 informational webinar, can be found here.

Senator Braun Reintroduces the Student Loan Tax Elimination Act

Senator Braun Reintroduces the Student Loan Tax Elimination Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Mike Braun has reintroduced the Student Loan Tax Elimination Act, which removes the “origination fee” adding unnecessary debt to student borrowers’ overall student loan costs.

“Student loan origination fees are nothing more than a hidden tax that burdens students,” said Senator Mike Braun. “This legislation is a step forward and offers one solution to addressing our broken higher education system that fails to put students first.”

The Student Loan Tax Elimination Act removes an antiquated tax (“origination fee”) that is adding unnecessary debt to student borrowers’ overall student loan costs.

The Act also mitigates the impact of this tax to over overall national debt. Simply put, this bill eliminates a tax that is not good for borrowers or taxpayers.

Information provided by National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators:

Origination fees are 1 percent for Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans, and 4 percent for all Direct PLUS Loans where the where the fees offset subsidies to lenders.  “The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, specifies a loan origination fee of 1 percent for all Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans, and a fee of 4 percent for all Direct PLUS Loans for both parent borrowers and graduate and professional student borrowers. Origination fees are adjusted annually due to sequestration.  Origination fees are a relic of the bank-based guaranteed student loan program, a program where the fees offset subsidies to lenders that no longer originate such loans.”

Student loan origination fees sends $1.7 billion to the federal government. “Student loan origination fees, the hidden student loan tax, generated a staggering $1.7 billion in revenue for the federal government in award year 2017-18, and $8.3 billion over the past five award years.”
The average undergraduate student pays $294 and the average graduate student pays $1,174 in origination fees. “The average undergraduate borrower in a four-year program will pay an estimated $294 in origination fees and associated interest if enrolled in a standard 10-year repayment plan, while the average graduate student in a two-year program pays about $1,174 in fees and interest on that fee if repaying over 10 years.”

ISP Captain Receives Promotion to Major General in the Indiana National Guard

0

Indiana State Police Captain Robert D. Burke, a 27 year veteran with the Department and 31 year veteran of the Indiana National Guard, was recently promoted to the two-star rank of Major General to serve as the V Corp Deputy Commanding General.

Former Indiana National Guard soldier promoted to major general and took the support reins of V Corps, headquartered at the U.S. Army installation situated south of the Ohio River about 40 southwest of Louisville, Kentucky.

Maj. Gen. Robert D. Burke, most recently the Deputy Chief of Staff Multinational Corps Northeast based in Poland, received his two-star rank during a ceremony attended among others by Indiana National Guard Adjutant General, Brig. Gen. Dale Lyles.

“This role that Bob is about to undertake, as V Corps deputy commanding general for support, couldn’t be awarded to a more worthy and accomplished individual,” said Lyles in his speech. “There isn’t another soldier in the National Guard, or perhaps anywhere, who has accrued his specific background and qualifications. Bob’s can-do attitude and his ability to employ a command philosophy of integrity, honesty, hard work and lifelong learning make him, in March Madness lingo, a slam dunk.”

V Corps organizes, prepares, develops strategic understanding, establishes an enduring rotational headquarters capability in Poland, and builds capability and capacity to shape, deter, fight and win in Europe.

On Order, V Corps, alongside allies and partners, competes forward in Europe to promote interoperability, counter malign influence and deter aggression. When directed, commands and controls Army, joint and combined forces in response to crises or, should conflict occur, fights and wins in large-scale combat operations.

Prior to serving overseas, Burke led the Indiana National Guard’s 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, headquartered in Lawrence, Indiana. During his tenure, the 76th was the first National Guard brigade to lead Pacific Pathways in 2018. The team’s soldiers also participated in high-profile exercises including eXportable Combat Training Capability program in 2016 and Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, Louisiana in 2017.

“There were two significant things for which I came to truly appreciate over my now 31 years as a citizen-solider, traditional Guardsman,” said Maj. Gen. Robert D. Burke, V Corps deputy commanding general – support “One is being able to not only do your second job as a soldier, but able to balance the dual career required by the military which on top of it has a military education requirement for every grade in order to be promoted.”

While a traditional Indiana National Guardsman, Burke also served as an Indiana State Police Officer, and several troopers made the trip south to support one of their own.

“The second and potentially one could argue the most important, is having a civilian employer that is completely committed to supporting their National Guard employee,” Burke said.

During his military career Burke has received the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal among many others. He’s served as the 38th Infantry Division’s operations officer and has commanded two battalion-sized formations.

Burke and his wife, Tina, have four children: Tyler, Kayli, Macy and Kyle.
