0

The COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund of the Greater Evansville Region has awarded a fourteenth round of allocations, granting nearly $400,000 to all 15 nonprofit applicants.

The COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund of the Greater Evansville Region has awarded a fourteenth round of allocations, granting nearly $400,000 to all 15 nonprofit applicants. In total, the Response Fund has distributed more than $3.3 million to nonprofits in our five-county region who are responding to critical needs related to the pandemic and our region’s recovery.

This round of allocations will help provide COVID-19 antibody testing for donated blood, zoo memberships for ALICE households, food for at-risk children, staffing needs, programs to support social-emotional learning for kids, clinic supplies, and security/safety equipment.

As part of round fourteen, the Public Education Foundation was awarded $30,000 for the “House Project.” Instead of purchasing lumber for a house, the lumber will be used to construct 85 tables and chairs for flexible outdoor seating at 15 schools within the EVSC. A portion of the award will go toward the purchase of a home lot for the 2021-2022 school year.

Stir-n-Up Hope in Ferdinand, IN was awarded $30,000 to support youth in the care of the Spencer County Juvenile Probation Office. Funds will underwrite 16 weeks of Equine-Assisted Learning for 48 juvenile offenders. According to The National Institutes of Health, providing community-based, youth mentoring programs and resources reduces juvenile recidivism.

Adapting To The Financial Changes Of Retirement

0

Associate Vice President/Investments, Stifel, Nicolaus & Company, Incorporated

Retirement is a time to live life to the fullest.  It’s a chance to reward yourself for a successful career.  It’s an opportunity to live the good life.  That said, retirement is not without unique set of obstacles.  If ignored, these obstacles can have serious consequences.  In order to maximize retirement and truly live life to the fullest, retirees must adapt to changes in healthcare coverage and utilize new sources of income.

Changes in Healthcare Coverage

The moment you leave your job, your healthcare coverage will change.  How this impacts you depends on a variety of factors, including your age.  Those who retire at age 65 or later are eligible for Medicare.  Those who retire prior to age 65 are not and should consider purchasing private health insurance.  The cost differential between private health insurance and Medicare can be significant.

Let’s take a look at twin sisters who we will call Allison and Brittany.  Despite trying to develop better financial habits throughout her working years, Allison’s proclivity for immediate gratification has remained largely unchanged.  Thus, it was no surprise to anyone when she decided to retire at age 60.  Because she was not yet Medicare eligible, Allison purchased private health insurance for $14,175 per year.*   Brittany exhibited more patience, delaying retirement until she became Medicare eligible.  The cost of Medicare can be less expensive than private health insurance, so Brittany only had to pay $3,704 per year* for healthcare coverage.  By waiting to retire until age 65, Brittany minimized her fixed healthcare costs while maximizing her ability to pursue retirement spending goals.

New Sources of Income

Prior to retirement, most individuals rely primarily on wage income to cover expenses.  In retirement, these individuals must rely on new sources of income, such as retirement plan distributions and Social Security retirement benefits.  Effectively managing these new sources of income requires a basic understanding of the rules.

Retirement Plan Distributions

An individual can generally begin taking penalty-free distributions from a qualified retirement account upon reaching age 59 ½.  Distributions from a traditional account are fully taxable.  Distributions from a Roth account are generally tax-free.

There are recent changes to rules regarding Required Minimum Distributions.

On December 20, 2019, President Trump signed the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancements (SECURE) Act into law.  The SECURE Act became effective on January 1, 2020.  One of the many changes instituted by the SECURE Act concerns the rules governing required minimum distributions (RMDs).  Prior to the passage of the SECURE Act, individuals with traditional qualified retirement accounts had to begin taking RMDs by April 1 of the year after reaching age 70 ½.  Under the new law, individuals do not have to begin taking RMDs until April 1 of the year after reaching age 72 beginning in 2020.

Social Security Retirement Benefits

Although you can elect to receive your Social Security retirement benefits beginning at age 62, this may not be your best option.  If you elect to begin receiving benefits prior to your full retirement age (FRA), your monthly benefit will be less than if you had waited until FRA.  If you delay benefits until after FRA, you will earn delayed retirement credits until age 70.  These credits will increase the monthly benefit you ultimately receive.

The age at which one decides to begin receiving Social Security retirement benefits can have a lasting impact.  For an example, we turn again to Allison and Brittany.  In need of an income stream, Allison elected to receive her Social Security retirement benefits at age 62.  Brittany was able to wait until age 70.  Although Brittany began receiving Social Security retirement benefits eight years later than Allison, her higher monthly benefit amount could translate to a higher cumulative lifetime benefit depending on how long each person lives.

Indiana State Fairgrounds Education Offerings

0

In celebration of National Ag Day, the Indiana State Fairgrounds and Event Center and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture have teamed up to launch a new augmented reality education opportunity for students of all ages but with a focus on grades eight, nine and 10.

“The ability for students to learn about our diverse agricultural systems through a cutting-edge experience like augmented reality is outstanding,” said Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch. “The hard work put into these education modules from the State Fairgrounds staff will help capture our children’s minds while also serving as a good representation of our agriculture industries in Indiana.”

Launching March 23, 2021, the augmented reality curriculum is intended to immerse and excite Hoosier students about the practices, products and careers in three distinct Indiana agricultural sectors. Students will utilize their mobile device or school tablet to download an app and activate the experience, which operates by scanning a QR code:

  • Indiana Crops Experience – An augmented reality exercise where students will operate a combine to harvest a field of corn, learning various facts about crop production along their journey.
  • Indiana Dairy Experience – An augmented reality exercise where students will have the opportunity to visit a virtual dairy farm, learning about four different areas of the farm used in milk production and cow comfort.
  • Indiana Hardwoods Experience – An augmented reality exercise where students will navigate a logger around a virtual forest. They will help manage the forest by harvesting four varieties of hardwood trees (ash, hickory, maple and oak) while learning about products made from each type of hardwood.

“These apps help to deliver ag education to students in a unique and engaging way,” said Cindy Hoye, executive director, Indiana State Fair Commission. “We also plan to offer these augmented reality experiences to our guests at the 2021 Indiana State Fair, so that’s exciting as well.”

As an introduction to the augmented reality experience, each of the three apps includes an animated video overview of the industry followed by a narrated quiz for students to complete for comprehension retention. The augmented reality experience in each module ties directly back into career options, and students are provided a variety of resources to learn more about careers in agriculture after completing the experiences.

“These augmented reality learning opportunities are critical for students to see how agriculture products make their way into Hoosier homes,” said Bruce Kettler, Indiana State Department of Agriculture director. “We are looking forward to this curriculum increasing interest in the exciting possibilities of careers in Indiana agriculture.”

On March 23, 2021, all of Indiana’s agriculture teachers will directly receive an invite to register for the newly offered experiences. These apps can also be used by students outside the agricultural classroom and can be downloaded by non-agricultural teachers here. All three apps are available for download at no charge on both Apple and Android devices.

Funding for the development of the apps came from a grant from the Indiana State Department of Agriculture. Additional funding, expertise and time was provided by Beck’s Hybrids for the Indiana Crops Experience. Time and expertise were also provided by the Indiana Hardwood Lumberman’s Association and the American Dairy Association of Indiana to develop the Indiana Hardwoods Experience and the Indiana Dairy Experience.

NCAA Championships History

The six-time NCAA Champion Hoosiers have finished in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships in seven of the last eight seasons. For the fourth-straight season, Indiana finished as the top Big Ten team at the NCAA Championships in 2019 – the best stretch for IU since accomplishing the feat for 15-straight seasons from 1964-78.

In 2019, the last contested NCAA Championships, the Hoosiers finished third overall in the team standings with a total of 385.5 points. For IU, the third-place finish marked back-to-back top-3 finishes at the NCAA Championships for the first time in 44 years. IU finished in the top-3 of the NCAA’s in 12-straight years from 1964-75, winning the team title six times during that stretch.

Over the course of the week, Indiana won a total of four NCAA championships, matching the program’s total from 2018. The eight NCAA titles over the past two seasons are the most for the program since winning nine in 1973-74.

The Hoosiers had 13 individuals earn a total of 38 All-America honors.

2021 Big Ten Championships
Indiana earned runner-up honors at the Big Ten Championships with 1,357 points.

Sophomore Brendan Burns was named the 2021 Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships after a dominating week saw him win four gold medals in the 200 Butterfly, 200 Backstroke, 400 Freestyle Relay, and 400 Medley Relay. He also earned silver in the 100 Butterfly and bronze in both the 200 Medley Relay and 800 Freestyle Relay.

Redshirt junior Andrew Capobianco was named co-Big Ten Diver of the Championships after winning the 1-meter event and placing fourth on the 3-meter springboard. He became the 16th diver in program history to earn Diver of the Championship accolades and first since James Connor is 2019. Capobianco was named Big Ten Diver of the Year following the 2018-19 season.

Over the course of the week, 11 Hoosiers were named All-Big Ten Swimmers or divers: Zane Backes, Michael Brinegar, Brendan Burns, Andrew Capobianco, Gabriel Fantoni, Tomer Frankel, Jack Franzman, Corey Gambardella (second team), Mory Gould (second team), Brandon Hamblin and Van Mathias.
