Sophia Rohleder three strokes off lead at Murray State
Final round set for Saturday
Â
MURRAY, Ky. – Senior Sophia Rohleder finished the opening day of the Jan Weaver Invitational just three strokes off of the lead as the University of Evansville women’s golf team wrapped up the first two round of the Jan Weaver Invite on Friday at Miller Memorial Golf Course.
Rohleder began Friday’s action with a 74 before carding an even 72 in the second round. Her score of 146 has her in a tie for 4thplace, just three strokes off the lead entering the final 18 holes. Della Gibbs from Belmont and Bradley’s Taylor Ledwein lead the individuals with scores of 143. Payton Carter from Murray State is in third with a 144.
Second on the Aces squad is Mallory Russell. She started the tournament with a 77 before recording an 80 in Friday’s second round. She completed the day with a 157 and is tied for 39th. Fresh off of a career tournament at Indiana State earlier this week, Allison Enchelmayer shot a 76 to start the event before recording an 83 to finish with a 159. She is tied for 43rd with a 159.
Alyssa McMinn and Caitlin O’Donnell both completed today with a 161. McMinn fired off an 84 before lowering her second round by seven strokes to a 77. O’Donnell had a solid finish in both rounds, finishing with an 81 and 80. Carly Frazier had another strong showing playing as an individual. Like Enchelmayer, Frazier had a career tournament in Terre Haute and carried the momentum into this weekend. Rounds of 76 and 80 have her tied for 36th with a 156.
Evansville sits in 9th place in the team standings. The Aces are three behind Georgia State and five ahead of Dayton. A close race at the top of the leaderboard has Central Arkansas pacing Murray State by one stroke. Central Arkansas had a 598 in the first two rounds while the Racers finished at 599. Seton Hall is third with a 602.
The final 18 holes are set to begin on Saturday morning.
Walsh nets two goals as Eagles top Lions in shootout
Junior defender Colten Walsh (St. Louis, Missouri) scored a goal in the 89th minute of the game to lift University of Southern Indiana Men’s Soccer to a 4-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over visiting Lindenwood University Friday evening at Strassweg Field.
Walsh’s goal was his second of the game and helped the Screaming Eagles avoid overtime in a game that USI held leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2.
Sophomore forward Zach Barton (St. Louis, Missouri) gave the Eagles the 1-0 lead in the 37th minute off a pass from sophomore midfielder Brian Winkler (Philpot, Kentucky). Lindenwood answered with a goal in the 43rd minute to send the teams into the intermission in a 1-1 tie.
USI (6-5-1, 6-5-1 GLVC) broke the stalemate early in the second half as sophomore midfielder Marky Lara (Evansville, Indiana) scored an unassisted goal less than a minute into the second period.
Walsh scored his first goal of the evening in the 53rd minute, off a pass from freshman midfielder Ian Bennett (Evansville, Indiana), to give the Eagles a 3-2 advantage, nearly four minutes after Lindenwood had tied the score for the second time.
The Lions (3-9-0, 3-9-0 GLVC), however, tied the score once more, this time with a goal in the 56th minute.
After the two teams combined for six goals in a 20-minute span, the scoring came to a grinding halt for the next 30 minutes and it looked as if the Eagles would be heading to overtime until a corner kick in the 88th minute got things rolling for the Eagles.
Walsh got a shot off following the corner kick, but a Lindenwood defender blocked the ball from reaching the net.
USI, however, kept possession, setting Walsh up for another shot after passes from Winkler and freshman midfielder Cade Walsh (St. Louis, Missouri). His second attempt would not be denied as the shot found the back of the net for the game-winner.
The Eagles conclude their regular-season home schedule Sunday at noon when they host the University of Missouri-St. Louis at Strassweg Field. The Tritons (7-2-2, 7-2-2 GLVC) were visiting McKendree University Friday night in Lebanon, Illinois.
USI rebounds to get DH split
University of Southern Indiana Baseball bounced back in the nightcap to earn a doubleheader split with McKendree University Friday afternoon in Lebanon, Illinois. USI lost a heartbreaker in the opener, 12-11, and won the nightcap 4-2.
The Screaming Eagles go to 13-12 overall and 10-8 in the GLVC, while McKendree ends the afternoon 11-11, 4-10 GLVC.
Game 1:
USI hit four home runs in the opening game, but the blasts were not enough as McKendree walked off with a 12-11 victory.
The Eagles blasted their way to a 6-1 lead after three-and-half frames that included three home runs. Senior shortstop Kobe Stephens started the scoring for the Eagles with a RBI single in the second for a 1-0 lead, while senior rightfielder Manny Lopez upped the lead to 3-0 with a two-run blast in the third.
After the Bearcats got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, sophomore center fielder Austin Moody got the run back to start the fourth with a solo shot, while junior second baseman Ethan Hunter put the Eagles up 6-1 with a two-run round-tripper to cap off the fourth.
McKendree closed the gap to 6-4 with a three-run home run of their own in the bottom of the fourth. The Eagles re-extend the margin to 8-4 in the sixth, but the Bearcats bounced back with two more to get within two again, 8-6.
The Eagles regained a five-run lead in the top of the ninth when senior catcher Wyatt Daly hit a two-run shot and freshman first baseman Adam Wildeman knocked in Hunter with a sacrifice fly for an 11-6 margin.
In the ninth, USI’s bullpen could not stop McKendree, which scored six times on five hits to conclude the walk-off 12-11 victory. Senior right-hander Paul Perez allowed the first two runs in the final frame, while freshman right-hander Carter Stamm (2-1) gave up the final three for the loss.
Game 2:
USI built a 3-0 lead in the nightcap and held on to earn a doubleheader split, 4-2.
USI senior rightfielder Manny Lopez gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the second inning to get the Eagles rolling. The home run was Lopez’s seventh of the season and his third-straight game with a round tripper.
The Eagle would up the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth when freshman first baseman Adam Wildeman reached on an error that scored senior shortstop Bryce Krizan and sophomore centerfielder Austin Moody.
The Bearcats would cut the 3-0 advantage to 3-2 with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the fifth. That would be as close as McKendree would in game two as Moody would seal the 4-2 victory for the Eagles in the top of the seventh by scoring on a wild pitch.
On the mound, USI sophomore right-hander Garrett Welch picked up his second win of the season. Welch (2-2) allowed one run on one hit and four walks, while striking out four in 4.1 innings of work.
Senior right-hander Tyler Hagedorn posted team-best second save of the season in relief. Hagedorn blanked the Bearcats for 2.2 innings, allowing two walks and striking out three. The senior right-hander (84) needs two more appearances to tie Trevor Leach (86; 2008-11) for the USI all-time record for trips to the mound in an Eagles’ uniform.

Senate Republicans Proposes To Reduce School Vouchers
Senate Republicans propose changes to the state budget, including reduced spending on school vouchers
By Hope Shrum
TheStatehouseFile.com
INDIANAPOLIS—An amendment to the state budget bill from Indiana Senate Republicans proposed scaling back funding for the private school voucher program and increasing funding for public K-12 schools.

The state budget—House Bill 1001—unanimously passed through the Senate Committee on Appropriations Thursday after the Republicans’ amendment passed. Senate Democrats proposed several amendments to the budget as well, all of which failed in 4-9 votes, with only the Democrats in the committee voting yes.
The Republicans proposed an additional $875 million for K-12 funding over the next two fiscal years and cut back the extension of the nonpublic school vouchers, which would not make as many middle-class families eligible as the House suggested.
The Senate Republicans also significantly cut the amount of funding the House proposed for the creation of the Education Scholarship Account Program. The House set aside $19 million for the program, but the Senate Republicans reduced it to just $3 million.
Some other details the amendment changes from the House’s version:
- Provides $150 million to address student learning loss due to the pandemic
- Expands broadband access with $250 million in federal dollars
- Allocates $100 million of federal funding to the Family and Social Services Administration to address mental health issues
- Appropriates $110 million to pay off debt and save $10 million in interest
The Senate Committee on Appropriations’ version of the state budget will now go to the Senate floor for a vote before heading back to the House for its review. Any differences would need to be resolved in a conference committee.

U.S. Senator Mike Braun Statement Regarding President Biden’s Executive Orders
“President Biden’s executive order on gun control is so extreme that even the Democrat-controlled Senate would never pass this bill that is a blatant assault on our Second Amendment rights.
We all want to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the dangerously mentally ill, but that can’t come at the expense of infringing on the rights of law-abiding citizens like a federal assault weapons ban – a one-size-fits-all approach from the federal government rarely works on any issue, including the Second Amendment. Other states should consider real solutions like Indiana’s red flag law, with proper due process protections.†– Senator Mike Braun
