Hannah Watkins Picks Up MVC Scholar-Athlete Honor

Sophomore Named To Honorable Mention Team

  1. LOUIS – University of Evansville sophomore Hannah Watkins was named to the 2020-21 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention Team in an announcement by the league today.  The team is selected by a vote of the league’s volleyball sports information directors, with approval from the MVC head coaches.

One of the top ten blockers in the MVC, Watkins led the Purple Aces with 12 solo blocks in the spring of 2021 while finishing second on the squad with 46 block assists.  Her offensive productivity nearly doubles from her freshman season as she wrapped up the year with a total of 49 kills, an average of 0.79 per set.

Watkins posted a career-high of four solo blocks in the opener against UNI while adding four block assists in the match.  In the season-opening win over Indiana State, she had to solo and three block assists.  The Henderson, Ky. native recorded a career mark of six kills in contests against Missouri State and Southern Illinois.  Her efforts in the classroom are even more impressive as she currently has a 3.73 GPA as a Global Business major.

The criterion for the honor parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA (on a 4.00 scale). Also, students must have participated in at least 75-percent of the regular-season matches. Student-athletes must have reached a sophomore status in both athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were not eligible).

Attorney General Todd Rokita: Payments for Hoosiers harmed by Equifax data breach are coming

Attorney General Todd Rokita announced today that his Office is preparing to distribute payments to 236,616 current and former Indiana residents who filed eligible claims for restitution following the massive 2017 Equifax data breach.

Each person who filed an eligible claim for restitution at IndianaEquifaxClaims.com will receive approximately $79. The Office will begin distributing digital and check payments on March 31. Claimants will receive their money in the manner they requested at the time of their claim.

“This Office’s years-long efforts to put money into the pockets of Hoosiers harmed by the Equifax data breach are finally coming to fruition,” Attorney General Rokita said. “I am very proud of the attorneys in my Office who worked tirelessly to achieve a positive outcome in this case. We will always fight tooth and nail for Indiana consumers.”

The Office of the Attorney General sued Equifax – one of the world’s largest credit-reporting bureaus – in May 2019, two years after the company suffered a data breach that impacted approximately 147 million Americans, including roughly 3.9 million Hoosiers. Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, driver’s license numbers and credit card information were compromised in the data breach, which an investigation by the United States House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform concluded was “entirely preventable.”

Last year, the Office announced that Indiana would receive $19.5 million under a settlement with Equifax. Indiana was one of two states that opted not to participate in a multistate settlement in July 2019, choosing instead to file its own lawsuit and ultimately negotiate its own settlement.

Indiana’s $19.5 million settlement exceeds the amount received by any of the 48 states that participated in the multistate settlement, which distributed $175 million to participating states.

Child Abuse Prevention Month kickoff virtual event set

The Indiana Department of Child Services, in partnership with The Villages, will host its annual Child Abuse Prevention Month kickoff on April 1.

JUST IN: O’Brien Sworn In As New State Representative For House District 78

STATEHOUSE (March 30, 2021) – Tim O’Brien of Evansville took the oath of office Tuesday to serve as state representative for House District 78.

Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta H. Rush administered the oath via Zoom with O’Brien in the House Chamber at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.

“It is an honor to serve my fellow Hoosiers, and I’m ready to represent House District 78,” O’Brien said. “My experience in business and connection to our community will drive my votes and conversations to prioritize the needs of Vanderburgh and Warrick counties. ”

O’Brien moved to Evansville to attend the University of Southern Indiana, where he graduated in 2015 with a bachelor’s in economics. To pay for his education, O’Brien sold houses while attending classes. Because of his enthusiasm, financial know-how, and understanding of the marketplace, at age 26, he became the youngest president of the Southwest Indiana Association of Realtors.

As a young professional, O’Brien is a real estate broker with F.C. Tucker Emge Realtors. He represents clients in Evansville and the surrounding area, advocating on their behalf and assisting them on the path to homeownership. O’Brien is involved in the community through volunteerism and serving on several local boards.

O’Brien resides in Evansville. He will serve out the remaining term of former State Rep. Holli Sullivan (R-Evansville), who was recently appointed to serve as the Indiana Secretary of State.

 

McMinn and O’Donnell lead UE women at Pinehurst

Aces in sixth place overall

 

PINEHURST, N.C. – Alyssa McMinn and Caitlin O’Donnell led the University of Evansville women’s golf team in the opening day of the Pinehurst Women’s Intercollegiate at Pinehurst No. 6.

 

Teams played a total of 36 holes on Monday’s opening day. Both McMinn and O’Donnell finished the day with a 154.  McMinn started the day with an 81 before making a huge leap in round two, carding a 1-over 73.  O’Donnell had a consistent day, finishing both rounds at 5-over par 77.  They are tied for 18th place.

 

Next up for UE was Mallory Russell.  After recording an 83 to start the day, she also lowered her score significantly, posting a 3-over 75 to cap off the day and finish with a 158, standing in a tie for 31st.  Two strokes behind her was Sophia Rohleder, who overcame obstacles to complete the day with scores of 83 and 77 on her way to a standing of 35th.  Allison Enchelmayer recorded an 82 in the opening 18 holes before lowering her final by four strokes in the second round, finishing with a 79.  Her 161 is tied for 36th.

 

Individual Carly Frazier completed the opening 36 holes with a 178.  Her rounds finished at 87 and 91.

 

As a team, Evansville is in 6th place with a 625.  UE is eight strokes outside of the top five and are four in front of Western Carolina.  Rutgers and UNC Greensboro are tied atop the leaderboard with scores of 599 while St. John’s is close behind in third place with a 601.  Tara Bettle of UNCG leads the individuals with a 140.  She is six strokes ahead of her nearest competition.

 

Tuesday will mark the final day of the even with the teams playing a single round of 18.

 

Marah Wood picks up third MVC newcomer award

For the third time in her inaugural season with the University of Evansville softball team, Marah Wood has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week.

 

Wood’s strong week saw her bat .417 with two home runs in an undefeated 4-0 week for the Purple Aces.  The freshman recorded five hits in 12 at-bats while blasting two homers to finish with four RBI and three runs scored.  Wood scored a run while recording two hits in four at-bats against SIUE.

 

In the doubleheader versus Valpo, Wood added a walk to her tally in the opener before launching a homer as part of a 2-3 effort in game two.  Wood had two RBI and a run scored in the 8-4 victory.  She made a difference once again on Sunday.  With her team trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Wood launched her seventh home run of the season, a 2-run shot, that began a comeback that capped off the series sweep.

Tim O’Brien wins Hollie Sullivan open seat for Indiana State Representative, House District 78 at tonight’s local Republican caucus.

District 78  House seat became vacant right after the recent appointment of Holli Sullivan as Secretary of State by Governor Eric Holcomb.

Meet Tim O’Brien The Newly Elected District 78 State Representative

Tim O’Brien is a graduate of the University of Southern Indiana with a Bachelor of Science in Economics, as a University Honors Scholar. Tim is a driven, hardworking professional who is well equipped with strong problem solving, communication, and leadership skills. Mr. O’Brien is a Real Estate Broker with F.C. Tucker Emge Realtors and represents consumers in and around the Evansville area.

Over the years, he has had the honor of advocating on behalf of his clients and assisting many individuals pursue their dreams down the path to homeownership. Mr. O’Brien is a 2019 recipient of the Courier & Press/Tri State Business Journal 20 Under 40 award and has been featured as a member of the Next Generation of Leader’s in Evansville Business magazine.

In 2019, Mr. O’Brien served as the President of the Southwest Indiana Association of Realtors. Tim is an active member of the community, volunteering with many organizations and serving on numerous boards including the City of Evansville’s Land Bank Corp. Board of Directors and the Indiana Association of Realtors. Mr. O’Brien serves as a Heritage Federal Credit Union Board of Directors member and is currently holding an officer role, serving as the Board Treasurer.

Mr. O’Brien served as a Delegate to the Indiana State Republican party convention in 2020, representing Vanderburgh County. Tim is currently serving as Secretary on the Vanderburgh County Republican Party Central Committee and as an elected Precinct Committeeman for HD 78.

This bill, authored and sponsored only by Republicans, has been passed by the Indiana House and has reached the Indiana Senate. It repeals the law that requires a license to carry a gun.

Firearms matters. Effective March 30, 2022: (1) Repeals the law that requires a person to obtain a license to carry a handgun in Indiana; (2) Specifies that certain persons who are not otherwise prohibited from carrying or possessing a handgun are not required to obtain or possess a license or permit from the state to carry a handgun in Indiana; (3) Prohibits certain individuals from knowingly or intentionally carrying a handgun; (4) Creates the crime of “unlawful carrying of a handgun”; (5) Provides that a prohibited person who knowingly or intentionally carries a handgun commits a Class A misdemeanor; (6) Specifies that the unlawful carrying of a handgun is a Level 5 felony if a person: (A) is less than 23 years of age; and (B) has an adjudication as a delinquent child for an act described by IC 35-47-4-5 (unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon); (7) Allows a resident of Indiana who wishes to carry a firearm in another state under a reciprocity agreement entered into by Indiana and the other state to obtain from the superintendent of the state police department a reciprocity license; (8) Requires law enforcement agencies to make use of certain data bases when issuing reciprocity licenses; (9) Specifies the following fees for reciprocity licenses: (A) $0 for five year reciprocity licenses, and (B) $75 for lifetime reciprocity licenses; (10) Provides that a person who knowingly or intentionally exerts unauthorized control over a firearm of another person with the intent to deprive the person of any part of its value or use commits theft, a Level 5 felony; and (11) Allows for the imposition of an additional fixed term of imprisonment when a person knowingly or intentionally: (A) points; or (B) discharges; a firearm at someone the person knew, or reasonably should have known, was a first responder. Effective July 1, 2021: (1) Provides that the following must develop a process that allows law enforcement officers the ability to quickly access information about whether a person is a prohibited person who may not knowingly or intentionally carry a handgun: (A) The state police department; (B) The bureau of motor vehicles; (C) Local law enforcement agencies; and (D) Any other state entity with access to information related to persons who may not knowingly or intentionally carry a handgun; (2) Provides that the information made available to law enforcement officers must meet all state and federal statutory, constitutional, and regulatory requirements; and (3) Allows state entities to enter into a memorandum of understanding to ensure that all legal requirements are met. Defines certain terms. Makes conforming amendments.
