McNamara’s New Law Helps Hoosier Motorists Get Back On Track

0

STATEHOUSE (April 23, 2021) – State Rep. Wendy McNamara’s (R-Evansville) legislation helping Hoosiers with suspended licenses get back to work is now law.

McNamara said Hoosiers who have their driver’s license suspended will have the opportunity to regain driving privileges by providing proof of future financial responsibility. According to the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council, of the approximately 1.2 million active license suspensions in Indiana, 850,000 of them are due to failing to appear in court, pay the administrative or violation fees associated with a driving infraction, or have insurance. This law allows these individuals to have their suspension lifted by showing proof of insurance to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

“The number one charged misdemeanor in Indiana is driving with a suspended license, and about 80 percent of those drivers are caught up in a pattern, falling behind on their payments because they cannot pay their fines or do not have transportation to appear in court,” McNamara said. “This legislation aims to help Hoosiers get back on track and break this cycle that could be detrimental to their employment, finances and other areas of their life.”

According to McNamara, those with a suspended license can see their driving privileges reinstated after 180 days by showing proof of future financial responsibility.

McNamara worked on this law with Gov. Eric Holcomb to allow the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles to lift individuals’ driving suspension if they can provide evidence of insurance. The law also removes the barrier for nonviolent, formerly incarcerated Hoosiers, to re-enter society more easily by giving the Indiana Department of Correction and the BMV the ability to waive an individual’s license reinstatement fees.

“Before an inmate is released, they must complete a 3-year education and job training program in order to have their driving privileges reinstated,” McNamara said. “This helps individuals jumpstart their transition back to normal life and reduce financial burdens.”

The Traffic Amnesty Program, which was created in 2020, is extended another year under this law. This program helps Hoosiers get back to work and allows the courts to forgive large portions of outstanding traffic fees.

USI Baseball earns a split with #10 Lindenwood

0

University of Southern Indiana Baseball had to settle for a doubleheader split with #10 (NCBWA)/#16 (ABCA) Lindenwood University Sunday afternoon in St. Charles, Missouri. USI won the opener, 9-4, but fell in the nightcap, 9-3.

The Screaming Eagles go to 20-16 overall and 16-12 GLVC, while the Lions end the afternoon 23-5, 19-5 GLVC.

Game 1:
The Eagles broke out in front for the first time in the series and cruised to a 9-4 victory in the opener.

USI scored four runs in the top of the first and took its first lead of the series on a two-run double by senior rightfielder Manny Lopez and a two-run single junior designated hitter Michael Conner. The Lions would respond with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to trim the USI margin to 4-2 after the first.

The Eagles pushed the lead back to four, 6-2, in the top of the second when senior shortstop Kobe Stephens and junior second baseman Ethan Hunter knocked a tally in with a RBI-double and RBI-single, respectively. The second four-run lead of the game would last until bottom of the third when Lindenwood scored twice to pull to within two, 6-4.

USI sealed the victory with a two-run eighth inning. Stephens started the seventh inning rally with his fourth hit of the contest, advancing to third on a wild pitch and a single by Lopez. Conner would drive in his team-high third and fourth RBIs of the game with a double, giving the Eagles comfortable 8-4 advantage.

Conner would come around with the Eagles’ ninth run of the game on a RBI-double by freshman leftfielder Gavin McLarty to give the game the eventual 9-4 final.

On the mound, senior right-hander Jacob Bowles would make the nine USI runs stand up for the opening game win. Bowles (4-2) won his team-best fourth of the season by allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits and two walks, while striking out four.

Game 2:
The Eagles allowed nine unanswered runs and stumbled in the nightcap, 9-3.

USI took an early lead, 1-0, for the second-straight game before Lindenwood scored three in the third and six in the fourth to build a 9-1 advantage. The Eagles had the 1-0 lead on a solo shot by senior rightfielder Manny Lopez, his second of the series and his team-best 10th of the season.

In the fifth and sixth, USI would cut into the deficit with a run in both frames to trail, 9-3. Senior centerfielder Bryce Krizan pushed the second Eagles’ run across with a RBI-double in the fifth, while Lopez struck again in the sixth with an RBI-sacrifice fly.

On the mound, senior right-hander Tyler Hagedorn took the loss. Hagedorn (2-1) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks in 2.2 innings of work.

Up Next for the Eagles:
The Eagles conclude the regular season by hosting the University of Indianapolis (April 30-May 2) at the USI Baseball Field. The May 2 game versus UIndy is Senior Day for the Eagles.

The Greyhounds are 16-16 overall, 14-10 GLVC, after splitting a four-game series with McKendree University at home this weekend.

USI leads the all-time series with UIndy, 59-56, after the Greyhounds took two of three from the Eagles in 2019. The Eagles, however, are 6-4 versus the Greyhounds since 2018.

Aces Baseball falls in Sunday series finale, 3-1

Zac Cummins makes first Evansville start in loss

NORMAL, Ill. – Tasked with making his first start as an Ace, Zac Cummins pitched well to keep the Aces in the game, but limited offense doomed Evansville in a 3-1 loss in Sunday’s series finale at Duffy Bass Field in Normal, Ill.

“Offense couldn’t provide enough on the 4th game of the weekend. Zac Cummins did a great job in his first start of the season to give us a chance,” said Aces head baseball coach Wes Carroll. “Illinois State didn’t give us a lot of freebies over the last 3 games and our offense just couldn’t create any momentum after Friday’s game.”

The aforementioned Cummins pitched four innings, allowing just one run on two hits, striking-out a pair, limiting the Redbirds advantage to just one midway through.

Evansville’s offense generated eight hits on the day, but left eight runners on base, some coming in critical opportunities. The Aces left runners on the corners with two outs in the fourth, two runners on in the seventh, and got a leadoff double by Robbie Wilkes in the eighth, but went down in order to follow.

Jace Kressin continued the strong day on the mound for the Aces, pitching the fifth, allowing a hit and nothing else. In the sixth, the Redbirds increased their lead with a pair of runs to move in front 3-0.

It was Evansville’s pitching who again helped keep the game close as Jakob Meyer looked strong with a two-inning outing in the seventh and eighth, allowing one base runner on a walk and striking-out two.

A resilient ball club all season, Evansville had one last word in the ninth inning. Mark Shallenberger, who concluded the weekend with a team-best .533 average in the series, walked to open the inning. Danny Borgstrom followed with a base-hit to center. Still with no outs, Tanner Craig snuck a double down the left-field line, scoring Shallenberger to trim the Redbirds lead to 3-1. The tying run standing on second base for Evansville with no outs, Illinois State made a change on the mound, bringing in Derek Salata. The Illinois State reliever ended the Aces threat, inducing a pop-out and getting back-to-back strikeouts to earn the Redbirds the 3-1 win.

Evansville returns to German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium next weekend for a four-game set with Conference-leading Dallas Baptist on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Evansville.

Four current and former Indiana swimmers competed in the 2021 Brazilian Olympic Trials at the Maria Lenk Water Park, in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. In order to secure a spot in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the swimmers needed to place first or second in a final and beat the FINA “A” standard.

Former Indiana standout Vini Lanza punched his ticket to the Olympics in the 200 IM after finishing second in the finals with a time of 1:59.67.

GABRIEL FANTONI (INDIANA ’21)

In his debut event of the trials, Fantoni finished in third place of the 100 Backstroke at 54.28. The four-time defending Big Ten Champion made the 50-meter turn in second, but was unable to hold his ground and missed his lifetime-best mark of 53.72 from the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships.

Fantoni claimed runner-up honors in the 200 Backstroke with a time of 2:02.34 after, once again, pacing the field early in race. He held off fellow countryman Brandonn Almeida by .38 seconds.

A three-time All-American at Indiana, Heitmann finished seventh in the 200 Freestyle at 2:01.34.

Heitmann nabbed sixth place out of the finals of the 400 Freestyle with a time of 4:17.08.

She closed out her week with a seventh place finish in the 800 Freestyle with a time of 9:05.79.

VINI LANZA (INDIANA ’19)

The former three-time Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships nabbed a spot on the Brazilian National Team with a great swim in the 200 IM. He touched in second place with a time of 1:59.58, just under the FINA “A” Standard mark of 1:59.67.

Lanza finished third overall in the 100 Butterfly after carrying the top time into the finals. He touched at 52.36, ahead of his preliminary pace.

In the 200 Butterfly, Lanza shot out quick to post a 100-meter split of 56.63 but struggled to hang with the top of the field and slipped to ninth in the prelims with a time of 2:04.17.

IAGO MOUSSALEM (INDIANA ’20)

Moussalem, a transfer from Miami (OH) prior to his senior season in 2019-20, touched in ninth place in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 53.11.

Softball drops doubleheader to Redbirds

Aces travel to Terre Haute on Wednesday

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Following a rainout on Saturday, the University of Evansville softball team battled Illinois State on Sunday at Cooper Stadium.

The Redbirds (27-6, 13-2 MVC) swept the doubleheader, finishing the opener with a 1-0 win before sweeping UE (19-19, 7-12 MVC) with a 9-0 win in the second contest.

 Game 1

Jaime Nurrenbern had a strong start, limiting the Redbirds to just one hit through the first three innings.  Hannah Hood played a large role in the third, ending the inning with a diving catch to keep ISU off the board.  Jessica Fehr picked up UE’s first hit of the game in the fourth, but the game remained scoreless.

That changed in the top of the sixth when ISU posted its second hit of the game before executing a double steal to put runners on second and third with two outs.  In a unique play, Andrea Coursey hit into a fielder’s choice.  The runner on third crossed the plate before the out was recorded, resulting in ISU taking a 1-0 lead.  That is where the final would land with Redbird starter Morgan Day finishing the complete game with 11 strikeouts and one hit.  Evansville saw Nurrenbern throw the best game of her career, allowing two hits in seven frames.

Game 2

Following a pitcher’s duel in the opener, Illinois State opened the second contest with a 5-run first inning.  Included in the run tally was a 2-run shot by Jayden Standish.  The Redbirds plated two more runs in the second to extend the lead to 7-0.  UE’s first baserunner came in the bottom half of the second when Marah Wood reached on a walk.

Haley Woolf and Lindsay Renneisen broke through with the Aces first two hits in the third but could not send the first run across the plate.  Another home run for the Redbirds highlighted a 2-run fourth frame as they pushed their advantage to nine runs.  Alyssa Barela opened the bottom of the fifth with a walk, but once again, the Aces were kept off the board with pitcher Mack Leonard finishing the 2-hit shutout and a 9-0 ISU victory.

On Wednesday, UE makes the trip north on Highway 41 to Terre Haute for a single game against Indiana State at 3 p.m. CT.

Eagles drop home contest to Lewis 5-2 concluding 2020-21 season

0

University of Southern Indiana Women’s Tennis (3-12, 0-6 GLVC) fell 5-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference match and their season finale this morning to Lewis University (8-5, 3-3 GLVC), 5-2 at the USI Tennis Courts.

DOUBLES: The Screaming Eagles pairing of senior Lauryn Thompson and sophomore fought to win five games but could not complete a comeback.

Lewis would go on to sweep all matches grabbing the doubles point.

SINGLES: The Flyers won the No. 2, 3, 4, 5 singles in straight-sets.

Freshman Lauren Rowe had a little trouble in the No. 1 singles dropping the first set, but then poured it on the next two to claim the victory for the Eagles. Rowe finished the season with her team-high eighth victory.

Sophomore Jasmine Shireman also grabbed a win in the No. 6 singles, prevailing in an eventual super tiebreaker set, 10-2. Shireman finished the year with four singles wins.

GLVC Standings Breakdown: The Eagles can finish no better than sixth in the GLVC East Division and the top four from each division advance to the GLVC Tournament. Thus, this will conclude the 2020-21 season for USI Women’s Tennis.
