The Week in Indiana History

quill

1816     President James Madison signed into law the Enabling Act, passed by Congress.  The measure would permit Indiana to become a state “on equal footing with the original states.”  The next step was the organization of a constitutional convention, which took place in the summer of the same year.  Indiana was admitted to the Union on December 11, 1816.

Hammond

1884     The city of Hammond was incorporated in Lake County.  It was named for George H. Hammond, who had founded a slaughterhouse in the area and built refrigerated box cars to haul the beef.  The town grew rapidly due to its proximity to Lake Michigan.  In the 1920s, the city was home to the Hammond Pros, considered one of the first professional football teams.

Army barracks1902     President Theodore Roosevelt sent a note to Secretary of War Elihu Root suggesting that the new Army post in Indianapolis be named for President Benjamin Harrison.  Roosevelt had served under Harrison as Civil Service Commissioner.  The fort was active for 85 years and is still the site of the Defense Finance and Accounting Center.  The grounds have been developed into a state park.

Titanic1912     Indianapolis resident Ellen Toomey returned to her home on Bates Street, having survived the sinking of the Titanic.  She had been on a visit to Ireland to see her mother and two sisters.  She booked passage  for the return trip on the Titanic.  When the ship struck an iceberg and began to sink, she was placed in a lifeboat with 30 other people.  They drifted on the dark sea for seven hours before being rescued by another ship, the Carpathia.

Hughes and Bontemps1939   Langston Hughes and Arna Bontemps, noted African American poets and authors, were guest speakers at the Indianapolis YWCA on North Pennsylvania Street.  Hughes (left) spoke about his experience as a journalist covering the Spanish Civil War.  Bontemps discussed his recent book, Haiti, Mysterious Island.  The event was sponsored by the Progressive Art League of Indiana.

1970     Herb Shriner and his wife Ellen were killed in an automobile accident in Florida.  Shriner was famous for his homespun humor about growing up in Indiana.  His monologues were accompanied by his harmonica.  He had his own radio and television programs and was a popular stage entertainer. Did You Know?

Herb Shriner was born in Toledo, Ohio.  However, his family moved to Indiana, as he used to say, “as soon as they heard about it.”  Growing up in Fort Wayne, he  learned to play the harmonica and began performing for local audiences.  One night his lip gave out, and he completed the program by telling homespun stories.  The stories made people laugh, and soon Herb found a niche for himself in show business.  He had his own network radio show in 1940.  That led to television, where he had his own show and made guest appearances on many others. He would play a quick tune on the harmonica and then talk about folks back home.  He even hosted a game show called “Two for the Money.”

He and his wife Ellen had three children:  a girl named Indy (for Indianapolis,) and twin boys, Wil and Kin Shriner.  Wil is an actor, comedian, and TV producer.  Kin is an actor on soap operas.

Quip from Herb Shriner:  My hometown had one big trouble:  Not enough get-up-and-go.  Actually, we’d get up, but there wasn’t anyplace to go.

Shooting 315 Taylor Ave.

2

On April 17, around 1:15 a.m., Evansville Police Officers heard multiple gunshots being fired from the area of 315 Taylor Ave. As officers were arriving in the area, central dispatch advised that there were several calls about multiple shots being fired in that same area.

When officers arrived, several vehicles were leaving the area and people were running and screaming that someone had been shot. One of the subjects on scene showed officers where the victim was located, in the 1400 block of Judson. Officers observed a white Honda CRV that had knocked over a fence and was wrecked into two houses. Inside the vehicle, the victim was located with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the head.

Officers began rendering aid to the victim and additional officers began to deal with crowd control. A crime scene was established and several additional officers were called to keep the crowd back, as this all stemmed from a birthday party being held at 315 Taylor Ave.

While canvassing the scene, approximately 50+ shell casings were located throughout the 1400 and 1500 block of Judson along with several in the 200 and 300 block of Taylor. There were at least 3 different caliber guns involved.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where his condition in not known at this time. Officers on scene received little to no assistance on a potential suspect and no one has been arrested for the shooting at this time.

Anyone who has information on this case is asked to call the Evansville Police Department’s Detective Office at 812-436-7979, or call the We Tip Line at 1-800-78-CRIME.

Serious Bodily Injury Accident

On April 16, around 9:00 p.m., the Evansville Police Department was dispatched to Washington Ave, just east of Kentucky Ave, for a single car accident involving a pedestrian.

A vehicle traveling eastbound stuck a pedestrian crossing the street southbound. The pedestrian was unresponsive on scene. He was transported to a local hospital and is currently in ICU.

The driver of the vehicle showed no signs of impairment and consented to a chemical test. Multiple witnesses provided statements. Detectives, Crime Scene and an Accident Reconstructionist arrived at the scene to investigate.

Gray settles in, pitches solidly as Craig smashes fifth home run

EVANSVILLE – Settling-in in the third inning, Shane Gray plowed through the Bears lineup in a strong performance on the mound for the Aces, but a pair of eighth-inning runs from Missouri State handed Evansville a 5-3 setback in the series opener on Friday night.

Gray closed the night pitching seven innings, allowing two earned runs and striking-out five. Michael Parks received the loss, lasting two-thirds of an inning, giving-up two runs on two hits. Coming in to finish the outing was Drew Dominik, going the final inning and a third, allowing just one hit and sitting down three batters via strikeout.

At the plate, Kenton Crews, Danny Borgstrom, and Ben Komonosky led the way with a pair of hits each with Crews delivering an RBI. Tanner Craig crushed his team-best fifth home run of the season, giving the junior two RBI in the opener.

Missouri State got to work early in the contest, plating three runs in the first two innings. In the first, the Bears got a single on the first pitch of the game, following it up with a walk to put a pair on with no outs. A base-hit two batters later loaded the bases and Baldwin delivered an RBI single to center to give the Bears a 1-0 lead before Gray ended the inning with a 6-4-3 double play.

Two more runs were added by Missouri State in the top half of the second on a two-run home run by Jenkins to right field that gave the visitors a 3-0 advantage. Beginning in the third, Gray showcased the best of his stuff, facing the minimum each inning from the third to the seventh and giving Evansville’s offense a chance to get going.

The Aces bats did just that in the middle portions of the game as Crews drove home Komonsky in the third to chip away at the Bears advantage.

In the sixth, Borgstrom singled to center with just one out, turning the plate over to Craig. The Scottsburg, Ind. native took advantage, driving a towering two-run homer to center field and tying the game at three.

The turning point of the contest came in the eighth when Gray gave way to Parks. The Bears opened the inning with a base-hit, advancing the runner to second on a wild pitch with one out. The insuing at-bat saw Rolffs deliver what would prove to be the game-winning run with a double to left, scoring Wood. Two batters later, with Dominik taking over for Parks, Missouri State added a second run in the inning with an RBI single from Hull to provide a 5-3 lead for the Bears.

Evansville appeared to have something going in the eighth with a lead-off double by Simon Scherry, but Ziegenbein locked-in for the Bears and sat the next six Aces down in order, securing the 5-3 Missouri State win.

The two teams meet for a doubleheader on Saturday at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville beginning at 1 PM.
