HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO OFFER FREE COOKIES AT VACCINATION SITES FOLLOWING DONATION BY GIRL SCOUTS OF CENTRAL INDIANA

0

The Indiana Department of Health announced today that it is partnering with Girl Scouts of Central Indiana to provide free Girl Scout cookies to participants at select COVID-19 vaccination clinics around the state, including mass vaccination clinics at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and at the former Roosevelt High School in Gary.

Girl Scouts of Central Indiana is donating approximately 70,000 packages of cookies to the vaccination effort due to a pandemic-related shortfall in sales this year.

“With many traditional sales opportunities shut down due to the pandemic, our Girl Scouts found creative ways to safely sell cookies through e-commerce and other innovations,” said Danielle Shockey, CEO of Girl Scouts of Central Indiana. “Unfortunately, like many businesses, our sales fell short of our goals, and we found ourselves with extra packages of cookies. As we evaluated our options, we decided that providing these packages of cookies to thank Hoosiers who are getting vaccinated was a way to support the incredible work being done to put this pandemic behind us.”

The cookies are being transported to select locations in partnership with Langham Logistics, which has provided logistical support for the Indiana Department of Health throughout the pandemic.

State Health Commissioner Kris Box, M.D., FACOG, said the donation is a welcome addition to the state’s vaccination efforts. Hoosiers age 16 and older are currently eligible to receive a free COVID-19 vaccine at one of more than 700 sites around the state.

“We are grateful to Girl Scouts of Central Indiana for supporting the vaccination sites around the state and hope that the addition of cookies makes the experience of getting this life-saving vaccine even sweeter,” she said.

These donated cookies are separate from those donated for Operation: Cookie Drop, which sends cookies to military service members, veterans, first responders and healthcare heroes.

Attorney General Todd Rokita: Dismissal of lawsuit against Indianapolis archdiocese is a win for religious liberty

0

Attorney General Todd Rokita today issued the following statement regarding the dismissal of a lawsuit against the Archdiocese of Indianapolis involving Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, which affirms the freedom of religious schools to employ teachers who support their faith:

“As we argued in the brief we filed with the court, questions of religious doctrine should be left to churches. When courts unnecessarily entangle themselves in these matters, they threaten the autonomy of churches and the free exercise of religious liberty. Catholic schools and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese have every right to require staff to teach and uphold Catholic teachings. Such religious liberty is one of the most fundamental aspects of American life.”

Attached are several documents pertinent to this case.

The Intersection Of Creativity, Learning, And Community

0

submitted by Indiana Arts Commission

We believe everyone in the state of Indiana should have the opportunity to find joy in creating, and we’re excited for this year’s conference to support those who facilitate that creation: the artists, arts organizations, community members, and art teachers in our state that do the important job of communicating art skills and providing creative experiences for the very youngest to the very oldest and everyone in between.

Think community arts learning, audience engagement, arts education, arts workshops, residencies, and educational performances.

We’re so excited to open the call for sessions and content proposals this year. We’re looking for content centered around the ideas, skills, networking, and arts experiences YOU want to participate in.  (Have an idea that you’d like to see someone else present? Suggestions are welcome too!)

It is important to us that sessions:

  • Connect to this year’s focus in some way
  • Support participant interaction
  • Include a Call to Action and Teaching Goal
  • Celebrate Hoosiers engaging their communities, build the skills of attendees to do so, OR BOTH

A few more expectations as you submit:

  • You CAN submit more than one proposal, but we’ll probably only choose one of your sessions to make sure everyone has an opportunity to have their voice heard.
  • Proposals can be from individuals or groups with no more than 3 speakers.
  • It would be great if your session would be formed already when you propose, but we’re realistic. At this point, we’re asking for the topic and speaker(s). Tell us what you know and how you plan to proceed.
  • We may ask that you revise your proposal, title or description.
  • Selected speakers will be eligible for a small honorarium.

Denton, from Brentwood, Tenn., was drafted by the Cardinals organization in the 2nd round of the 2015 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Ravenwood High School.

“I am hoping to show and prove that I’m in the best shape of my life physically at 23, that I am healthy, and that I am capable of performing at my highest level,” Denton said.

“I hustle everywhere I go, and I want to be the best version of myself every day I play. I play the game with high energy.”

Denton spent 2015-19 in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Overall, Denton batted .237 with 144 runs, 19 home runs, 69 total extra-base hits, 126 RBIs, and 15 stolen bases.

“I am looking forward to playing in the same ballpark that Tom Hanks was at in ‘A League of Their Own,’ and I look forward to coming to a city that I have relatives in,” Denton added.

Estes, an Indianapolis, Ind. native, will head into his first professional season.

“I want to show all five tools at a high level, and I want to take away hits in both the infield and outfield,” Estes said.

Estes played collegiately at California State – East Bay from 2017-19. During the 2018 season for the Pioneers, Estes batted .280 in 10 games played with three runs driven in.

Estes started his collegiate career at Consumnes River College from 2015-17.

“I want to help my team win another title this season, and personally, I have goals to lead the league in OPS and stolen bases,” Estes said.

Henderson, from Glendale, Ariz., has six years of experience in professional baseball, as he was drafted in the 16th round of the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. He spent two seasons with the Arizona League Dodgers.

From 2014-17, Henderson has also played for independent baseball organizations, including the Washington Wild Things, Florence Freedom, and Southern Illinois Miners of the Frontier League. He also spent some time in 2015 with the Gary Southshore Railcats of the American Association.

“I am very thankful and excited for an opportunity to play for such a historic organization,” Henderson said.

“I hope to come in and be a dynamic player, helping the team win. I will always play hard and respect the game.”

Homicide W. Virginia St. and N. First Ave.

0

On May 10, around 3:20 a.m., the Evansville Police Department was called to the area of N. First Ave. and W. Virginia St. for a shots fired call. One of the callers told Central Dispatch that they heard several shots being fired in that area.

Another caller advised that there had been a motor vehicle accident in the same area. When officers arrived, they located the crashed vehicle with a deceased male victim in the driver’s seat. It appeared as if the victim had been shot.

Due to the large amount of shell casings in the area of First and Virginia, it is believed that the victim was shot while waiting for the traffic light and then sped through the intersection after being shot multiple times, then crashing.

There are no suspects at this time. If anyone has information on this incident they are asked to contact the Evansville Police Department’s Detective Office at 812-436-7979, or the We Tip Line at 1-800-78-CRIM

Relentless bats earn Aces a share of series with SIU

0

Notching a season-high 15 hits, Evansville’s offense helped deliver a 6-5 win on Sunday in the series finale as the Aces split a four-game set with Southern Illinois at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville.

“Found a way to finish the weekend with a win. Clearly we needed a deep pitching performance from our starter Donovan Schultz and he delivered.,” said Evansville head baseball coach Wes Carroll. “We also got an outstanding performance from Shane Harris and Jakob Meyer. Tanner Craig had a big day and we overcame leaving 10 runners on base to get the win. ”

After a tough start, Evansville showed its resiliency, battling back. The Salukis scored three runs off Aces starter Donovan Schultz in the top of the first inning to take an early advantage. Evansville got a run back in the bottom half of the first as Simon Scherry drove a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Kenton Crews.

Following the first inning, Schultz locked in and was impressive on the mound, recording three-straight innings sitting SIU down in order in the second, third, and fourth innings. Evansville continued to get steady production from its offense, tying the game in the third. Tanner Craig added to his monster weekend with a solo home run in the third to trim SIU’s lead to one at 3-2. with the bases loaded, Robbie Wilkes reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Scherry, tying the game at three.

Evansville took its first lead of the afternoon in the fourth, as Scherry again was involved, ripping a double to right that scored Ben Komonosky.

SIU would retake the lead in the fifth with a two-run base hit that put the Salukis back up, 5-4. As was true in the first, Evansville answered each of the Salukis attacks, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fifth. Wilkes tallied his second RBI of the day as Danny Borgstrom scored to tie the game on a groundout. The Aces would go in front for good later in the inning with an RBI single to center from Brent Widder that plated Eric Roberts, handing UE a 6-5 lead.

On in relief of Donovan Schultz, Shane Harris looked dominant. The redshirt freshman turned-in three innings of work, allowing just one hit and sitting down three Salukis via strikeouts to preserve the Evansville lead.

In the ninth with SIU down to its final three outs, Jakob Meyer tallied his team-high sixth save of the season, pitching a perfect inning, including a strikeout as the Aces earned the 6-5 win.
