Deadline to apply for LIHEAP is next week

Line

The deadline for Indiana homeowners and renters to apply for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is next Friday, May 14. Households can apply online here.

The online portal will stop accepting applications at 11:59 pm EST/10:59 pm CST on Friday, May 14. All physical applications, including e-mail, postal mail, and faxed applications, must be received by our Local Service Providers by their close of business on Friday, May 14 to be considered for approval.

If a household is in immediate need of assistance, they should call 211 or contact their Local Service Provider for referrals to additional resources available in their area. If a household is currently scheduled for disconnection on their heating or electric utility, they should contact their utility provider and negotiate a payment agreement to avoid disconnection.

Tasha’s Journey of Becoming a Homeowner

line

 Tasha

One year later—despite the challenges of the pandemic delaying construction and raising costs—Tasha and her family have moved into their new home.

“My family and I have always dreamed of becoming homeowners and now, thanks to Regal Homes, we have our beautiful brand-new home ‘Big Red’,” Tasha shares.

This project not only brought beautification and revitalization to a neighborhood but it empowered a local resident to move from a long-time renter to a first-time homeowner. This has set Tasha and her family on a path towards wealth creation and long-term financial stability.

We personally want to thank Tasha for allowing us to share her journey of becoming a homeowner. She and ‘Big Red’ have inspired so many families across our state who are working hard to also become homeowners. Congratulations Tasha!

HOOSIER HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS: Indiana Ratifies the 15th Amendment

May 9 – May 15

The Week in Indiana History

amendment

1869     Indiana ratified the 15th Amendment to the United States Constitution.  The third and last of the “Reconstruction Amendments,” the amendment prohibits the denial of voting rights based upon race or skin color.  Indiana was the 14th state to approve the measure.  It was passed into law by the United States Congress on February 3, 1870.

Eli Lilly

1876     Colonel Eli Lilly opened a laboratory on Pearl Street in Indianapolis.  He had three employees, including his 14-year-old son Josiah.  The firm grew over the years to become one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world.

monument1902   The Soldiers and  Sailors Monument was formally dedicated in Indianapolis.  General Lew Wallace was Master of Ceremonies.  The program included the reading of a poem by James Whitcomb Riley and music written and performed by John Philip Sousa and his band.

Doris Day1946     24-year-old Doris Day appeared at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in Indianapolis.  A singer with Les Brown and his “band of renown,” she had already scored a number-one hit record with “Sentimental Journey.”  She recorded many other hits before going to Hollywood, where she starred in scores of popular movies.

map1961    Newspapers carried reports about the early stages of the massive $850 million interstate highway system.  Interstates 70 and 74  would carry east-west traffic through Indiana, and Interstates 65 and 69 would run from north to south.  Interstate 465 was proposed as a beltway around the city of Indianapolis.  The highways would transform the state and its cities in many ways.

Lottery1989     Indiana Governor Evan Bayh signed a bill which created the state lottery.  The legislation also allowed for pari-mutuel wagering on horse racing.  A constitutional prohibition against a lottery had been repealed the previous November.

Victory

Did You Know?

“Victory,” the lady at the top of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, was taken down ten years ago for repair and restoration.  The 38-foot statue, created by sculptor George Brewster, had been in place atop the monument for 117 years.  Weighing almost 20,000 pounds, the famous lady needed special care in coming down.  After restoration work was complete, she was on view for a short time at ground level (pictured.)  Soon, however,  she was back on her perch, 284 feet above Monument Circle.

Gov. Holcomb Statement on Pandemic-Related Unemployment Insurance Programs

0

INDIANAPOLIS — The Governor’s Office has received several requests regarding the future of the pandemic-related unemployment insurance programs. Governor Eric J. Holcomb offered the following statement:

“I’ve asked the Department of Workforce Development to complete a demographic analysis of unemployed Hoosiers over the past 16 months so I have the best information available to make an informed decision about whether the state should continue to participate in federal pandemic unemployment programs. Part of that analysis is to compare our workforce now versus before the start of the pandemic. Our unemployment rate stands at 3.9 percent, which is near pre-pandemic levels, and our labor force mirrors pre-pandemic levels, when we also had worker shortages. We must concentrate on building the right pathways to match people with the skill sets employers need and to attract more people to join our workforce.

“In the meantime, I’ll issue an executive order early next week that will reinstate the requirement that unemployment insurance claimants actively seek employment and be available for work, which we have waived since the beginning of the pandemic. I’ve also directed DWD to assure we are providing all needed support services for those who are out of work.”

USI Board of Trustees approves new certificate program for nursing home administrators

0

At its regular business meeting on Friday, May 7, the University of Southern Indiana Board of Trustees approved a new post-baccalaureate program offering residency training to nursing home administrators and qualifying them for national and Indiana nursing home administration licensure exams.

The Graduate Certificate – Administrator in Training (AIT) residency, offered through the Master of Health Administration program in the College of Nursing and Health Professions, is a 9-credit certificate comprised of two in-facility experiences overseen by a dedicated USI faculty member. The certificate will provide candidates with exposure to all nursing home operations, business, and regulatory practices and resident issues.

The AIT certificate is the only program of its kind in the state of Indiana and is supported by the USI Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program, a project supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of an award totaling $3,691,706 with zero percent financed with nongovernmental sources.

In additional business, the Trustees heard an update on the Indiana General Assembly legislative session, passed a resolution honoring Josi Barscz ’21 for her service as student trustee ahead of her graduation, and approved faculty promotion and tenure recommendations and retirements.

Libby is a 13-year-old female pit bull mix! She was surrendered to the shelter when her person had to move into housing that was not suitable for her. (Probably because of her size & breed.) She has been a bit nervous since having to adjust to shelter life, but she really likes people. She is looking for a “fospice” home where she can be the only pet, and relax on a couch for her golden years! Libby’s adoption fee is $150 and includes her spay, microchip, vaccines, and more. MVC Champs set for NCAA Regional in Columbus

0

UE women open play on Monday

An important milestone in University of Evansville women’s golf history will take place on Monday when the Purple Aces take to The Ohio State University Golf Club – Scarlet Course to open up the first-ever NCAA Regional in program history.

The 2021 Missouri Valley Conference Champions were selected to the Columbus Regional last week during the NCAA Selection Show, which was carried on live The Golf Channel.  The Purple Aces are one of 18 teams set to take part in the regional, which features Duke, Arizona State and Virginia as the top three seeds.  The top six teams and three individuals from each of the four regional sites will advance to the national championship in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Golfstat will have live results during the regionals while the team is set to take over the UE Athletics Instagram account to document their experience in Columbus. GoPurpleAces.com as well as the UE Athletics Facebook and Twitter accounts will have additional coverage throughout the event.

Evansville advanced to the NCAA Regionals with an historic victory in the MVC Championship nearly three weeks ago in St. Charles, Missouri.  After leading the field by ten strokes after the first two rounds, the Purple Aces battled the snow along with the University of Northern Iowa in the final round of play.  Following three rounds, the teams were tied and headed to a sudden death playoff.

With the snow falling as hard as it had all day when the teams went to the 18th hole for the playoff, UE put forth its best effort to clinch the championship.  A full team effort earned a dominant win in the playoff.  Sophia Rohleder picked up the Aces second individual championship.  Her 3-round tally of 229 bested her nearest competition by two strokes.  Four UE players finished in the top 21 with all five coming home in the top 32 in the standings.

Allison Enchelmayer was second on the UE squad and tied for 12th in the event with a 237.  Her low round was a 76 in the opening 18.  Alyssa McMinn tied for 17th following a strong first day with scores of 76 and 75.  Next up was Caitlin O’Donnell.  Her low round of the season got the Aces rolling on the first day.  O’Donnell carded a 73 to begin the tournament and set the tone for the entire team.  Mallory Russell finished in 32nd on the individual leaderboard, but made what may have been her top contribution on the playoff hole.  UE head coach John Andrews had Russell take the first shot of the playoff hole, which turned out to be a near perfect attempt that eventually led to the championship.
