COOKEVILLE, Tenn.- University of Southern Indiana Volleyball (8-20, OVC 3-13) failed to find an answer to the overwhelming Tennessee Tech University (21-7, OVC 10-6) outside attack, falling in three straight sets (20-25, 20-25, 20-25).

The loss mathematically eliminates the Eagles from Ohio Valley Conference contention as Tennessee State University improved to 5-11 and owns a tie breaker over the Eagles. Eastern Illinois University and TSU play each other next week for the eighth spot.

Set 1: USI 20, TTU 25
USI fell behind early but sophomore Ashby Willis helped bring the Screaming Eagles back with a strong kill down the line, trailing 10-12. Tennessee Tech swatted two monster blocks to extend their lead to four. Senior Paris Downing collected her third kill bring USI within one at 17-18. The Golden Eagles proceeded to make a 7-2 run, winning set one with 17 kills. TTU capitalized on seven crucial USI attacking errors.

Set 2: USI 20, TTU 25
Senior Jasmine Green returned after sitting out yesterday with back tightness and delivered a kill tying the match at 12. USI rallied for four-straight points capped off by a kill from junior Bianca Anderson as the Eagles led 14-12. However, TTU collected four of the final five points to gain a two-set lead. Senior Carly Sobieralski notched a double-double in only two sets with 19 assists and ten digs. The back breaker for the Eagles this weekend was their inability to win late in sets being outscored 22-8 in the final five points of each set.

Set 3: USI 20, TTU 25
Sophomore outside hitter Leah Coleman kept the Eagles close with two kills as the Eagles trailed, 12-14. USI continued to call the sophomores number with three more set kills. Anderson swatted back-to-back kills pulling within 20-22. The Golden Eagles proceeded to snatch the final three points sweeping the match.

Anderson led the Eagles with 11 kills, giving her 276 on the season at second best on the team. Sobieralski racked up 32 assists and 11 digs for her 24th double-double of the year. Junior Keira Moore snatched a team high 14 digs. Downing swatted three blocks.

USI begins homestand with win over IU Southeast

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball started its three-game homestand Friday night at Liberty Arena with an 88-41 victory over Indiana University Southeast.

Southern Indiana (3-1) jumped out to a quick lead Friday, and sophomore guard Triniti Ralston picked up where she left off from Tuesday’s road win at Murray State University. Ralston canned a three-pointer just over a minute into the game and shortly followed with a layup to give USI an early 10-0 advantage. The Screaming Eagles’ forwards also had an active presence in the first period, helping push USI ahead 16-0 before IU Southeast (0-3) scored its first points at the 4:24 mark of the first. The Eagles went on to take a 21-6 lead into the second quarter.

At the start of the second quarter, sophomore forward Chloe Gannon saw her first minutes of the season returning from injury. Gannon quickly recorded a layup two minutes into the second stanza. In the middle of the second, graduate forward Meredith Raley scored eight consecutive points for Southern Indiana to increase the Eagles’ lead to 40-11 with 2:28 until halftime. The Screaming Eagles went into the intermission in front, 47-15, as Raley had 10 first-half points and Ralston tallied nine in the first 20 minutes following a last-second layup to conclude the second frame.

Ralston continued to leave her mark in the contest by knocking down a pair of triples in the first three minutes of the second half, building Southern Indiana’s lead to 58-17. The Grenadiers tallied 14 points in the final four minutes of the third quarter, but the Screaming Eagles answered with made baskets of their own to maintain its large lead, 72-31, heading to the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Southern Indiana’s freshman guard Lexi Sepulveda made a charge with eight points in the quarter to reach double figures for the first time in a USI uniform, as the Screaming Eagles closed out the big win.

USI shot for over 57 percent (35-61) with six three-pointers and went 12-16 for 75 percent at the foul line. Southern Indiana outrebounded IU Southeast, 44-21, and had big advantages in points off turnovers, 34-5, and points in the paint, 50-14. Every player found the scoring column for USI Friday night. Ralston topped the squad for the second consecutive outing with 19 points. Raley totaled 13 points and Sepulveda recorded 12 points.

IU Southeast was 14-49 for just under 29 percent from the floor with five treys. The Grenadiers were 8-11 for nearly 73 percent at the free-throw line. Sophomore guard Grace Stapleton was the only Grenadier in double digits with 13 points.

Pricop’s double-double leads Lady Blazers past D-III No. 6 Owens C.C.

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University Lady Trailblazers opened up the 2024 Vincennes Lady Blazer Classic Friday evening inside the Physical Education Complex with a back-and-forth battle with NJCAA Division III No. 6-ranked Owens Community College.

The Lady Blazers came into the game again short-handed, with only seven active players and were able to come away with the 82-73 victory over the Express behind a 21-point 14-rebound double-double by freshman Delora Pricop (Brasov, Romania).

VU got off to a good start in the opening quarter, beginning the game with an early 6-2 lead before Owens answered back to take a 16-12 lead.

Vincennes closed out the first 10 minute period strong though, riding a 10-0 scoring run to take a 22-16 lead after the first quarter of play.

The Lady Blazers would hold their lead throughout most of the second quarter, getting the lead to as many as eight at 33-25 before Owens ended the first half with a flurry of threes to come back and take a 47-45 lead at the halftime break.

Coming out of the locker room in the second half, the Lady Blazers looked to get the momentum back on their home floor, using an 11-3 scoring run to take a 60-54 lead late in the third quarter.

Owens would again battle back, closing out the third quarter strong to head into the final 10 minutes trailing Vincennes 62-61.

Vincennes was able to slowly put the game away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Owens C.C. 8-1 to take a 72-65 lead.

Owens battled to the end, cutting the VU lead down o four at 77-73 but were unable to overcome the deficit as Vincennes closed out the 82-73 victory.

“It wasn’t pretty but a win is a win,” VU Interim Head Coach Ingrida Hartsfield said. “I think in the second half especially we starting playing better defense. Just closing the gaps, closing out and finding the shooters. They still made some shots but it wasn’t as many as in the first half.”

“I think we got to pushing the ball a little bit more up the floor and attacking the basket,” Hartsfield added. “Netala had a big game just from doing what she is best at, which is driving to the basket and attacking. It was a big game for Delora as well and I’m just glad she showed up and I hope we can keep her there.”

“I just think we started finding our roles again and doing our jobs out there,” Hartsfield said. “It was a slow start but just playing better defense helped.”

The Lady Blazers were led offensively by freshman Delora Pricop (Brasov, Romania), who secured her second straight double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds on the night.

Freshman Netala Dixon (Dyersburg, Tenn.) got the VU scoring going early and often Friday night, matching Pricop’s 21 points, while also adding six rebounds and three assists.

Freshman Ahmya Thomas (Phoenix, Ariz.) came off the bench to score in double figures, coming away with 17 points and a pair of assists.

Friday night marked the Lady Blazer debut of freshman Iris Valera (Augusti, Spain) who got the start Friday night in place of the inactive freshman Kiera Gant (Sellersburg, Ind.) and sophomore Kennedy Johnson-Corley (Clarksville, Tenn.).

Valera made an immediate impact with a first quarter three and finished her night with five points, nine rebounds and three steals.

“I’m big on rebounding,” Hartsfield said after her Lady Blazers outrebounded Owens C.C. 45-29. “I’m definitely very pleased with the rebounds. This past week we have spent hours boxing out, rebounding and just working on the things that is clearly paying off right now just from looking at the stats sheet.”

“Ahmya coming in and stepping up, using her speed and aggressiveness to score 17 points was big tonight,” Hartsfield added. “Delora was able to find her layups and started going up strong and that just makes a huge difference.”

The Lady Trailblazers will look to keep this momentum going when they return to the P.E. Complex floor Saturday, Nov. 16 to close out the 2024 Lady Blazer Classic against Moberly Area Community College at 5 p.m. eastern.

VU will look to get some payback against the Lady Greyhounds who defeated the Lady Blazers 73-61 earlier this season in Moberly, Mo.

Saturday night will also be ‘Hurricane Relief Night’ at the Physical Education Complex. Fans can get free admission to the VU men’s and women’s doubleheader tomorrow with a donation of paper towels or toilet paper. Donations will go to support those still in need from the effects of Hurricane Helene.

Other scores from day one of the 2024 VU Lady Blazer Classic include No. 4 Wabash Valley College winning over Moberly Area Community College 95-66.

“I just hope they keep fighting,” Hartsfield said. “It’s not going to be easy but I hope that they keep rebounding, keep attacking the basket and just getting stops on defense, talking on defense. Just the little things. If we just do the little things I think we have a shot. But it’s going to take teamwork and a team effort.”

THUNDERBOLTS RALLY BUT FALL JUST SHORT, 3-2 IN PEORIA

Peoria, Ill.:  Despite losing captain Matthew Hobbs in the second period, the Thunderbolts gave the Rivermen a real scare in the third period, coming up just one goal short in a 3-2 loss to the Rivermen in Peoria on Friday.  The Thunderbolts’ next home game will be on Saturday, November 16th against the Peoria Rivermen at 7:05pm CT.
After Zack Nazzarett opened the scoring for Peoria at 8:07 of the first period, Matthew Hobbs responded to tie the game with his first goal of the season, scoring at 18:04 from Scott Kirton.  Carlos Fornaris scored to put the Rivermen ahead 2-1 at 1:56 of the second period, however the Thunderbolts kept pace until late in the second period, when a large scrum broke out in the Evansville zone, resulting in Hobbs being kicked out of the game.  Soon after, Peoria grabbed a 3-1 lead as Michael McChesney scored at 18:02 to make it a 3-1 Rivermen lead.  The Thunderbolts rallied with a very strong third period, and on a power play of their own, cut the deficit to one goal as Jordan Simoneau scored his first goal of the season at 2:59, assisted by Tyson Gilmour and Anthony Hora.  Tough luck cost the Thunderbolts afterward, as strong scoring chances remained only chances despite nearly doubling Peoria’s shot total in the third period, as the Rivermen barely escaped with the 3-2 win.
Hobbs and Simoneau finished with one goal each, while Ty Taylor finished with 29 saves on 32 shots, putting up a very strong performance in goal despite the loss.  The Thunderbolts and Rivermen meet once again on Saturday, November 16th at Ford Center.

Police Ramping Up Patrols During Thanksgiving Travel Period

While people get their Thanksgiving travel plans ready, the Evansville Police Department is getting ready to increase patrol visibility as part of the annual Safe Family Travel campaign

The campaign, which starts November 16, focuses on impaired driving, aggressive driving, and proper use of seat belts. During the campaign, officers will work overtime conducting sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols designed to discourage impaired driving and promote seat belt use. The high-visibility enforcement campaign is funded with grants provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) through the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI).

“We’re anticipating another busy travel season this year, so for those sharing the road, remember; slow down, avoid distractions while driving, designate a sober driver, and buckle up,” said Devon McDonald, ICJI Executive Director. “We want everyone to make it to their holiday events safely.”

According to NHTSA, alcohol-impaired driving has tragically become associated with Thanksgiving Eve, with some people turning it into a night of drinking. Drivers who intend on drinking that evening should plan and secure a designated sober driver. “When you get on the road, you are pledging to use safe driving practices to keep all road users safe,” said Sgt. Nick Winsett. “Anyone heading out to a bar or party must make a commitment to stay sober for the night if they are driving or arrange for a sober ride home before they begin to drink alcohol”.

It is also important to wear a seat belt, put away the distractions and follow posted speed limits. Travelers are encouraged to check road conditions before each trip and to leave with plenty of time to reach their destination safely. “Whether you’re driving cross-country or across the street, it is essential that both drivers and passengers wear a seat belt, no matter the type of vehicle,” said Jim Bryan, ICJI’s Traffic Safety Director. “This Thanksgiving, and every day of the year, remember to buckle up.”

Motorists are encouraged to call 911 if they encounter an impaired or unsafe driver on the road.

USI Southwestern Indiana STEM Resource Center celebrates 15-year anniversary

0

This year marks the 15th anniversary for the Southwestern Indiana Stem Resource Center’s (SwiSTEM) Equipment Lending Service at the University of Southern Indiana. The Equipment Lending Service is a free service that provides educators with a cost-effective solution to accessing high-quality STEM resources. These resources are designed to enhance STEM education by making cutting-edge STEM educational tools readily available to schools throughout the Tri-state region, helping schools offer enriching learning experiences without the financial burden.

The service features an online catalog that enables teachers to seamlessly borrow and integrate these resources into their classrooms. Those resources are then delivered to the teacher’s classrooms along with instructional materials. The first delivery was made in October of 2009. That year, 1,230 pieces of equipment were delivered to area schools—3,617 were loaned last academic year. Since 2009, the Equipment Lending Center has loaned over 40,000 items to Tri-state educators.

“The Equipment Lending service elevated the lab experiences that I can provide my students with by giving me access to science lab equipment and materials that strengthen my lessons and are always accompanied by easy-to-use instructions and worksheets,” says Katie Bretz, teacher at Boonville Middle School. “What was once a video clip is now a hands-on learning activity for my students.”

The Equipment Lending Service has resources available to help teach life science, physical science, engineering, chemistry, coding, mathematics, earth and space science topics. Resources available are suitable for pre-K through 12th grade students. For example, chemistry resources include general chemistry model sets, mini centrifuges, metric measuring kits, spectrophotometers and more.

Additionally, SwISTEM offers ongoing support to ensure educators can effectively utilize the equipment. Since its inception in September of 2009, SwISTEM has continuously updated and expanded its inventory to meet the needs of teachers as the educational landscape has evolved. At the recommendation of area teachers, this expansion has included more equipment designed to teach STEM content at the elementary and even pre-school levels. Moreover, the SwISTEM Resource Center has diligently worked to align lessons to the new Indiana Academic Standards.

“The SwISTEM Equipment Lending Service is all about making top-tier STEM education accessible to all. By offering free access to advanced learning tools, we empower educators and students to innovate and excel in the classroom,” says Allison Grabert, Director of the SwiSTEM Resource Center. “This initiative reflects USI’s deep commitment to strengthening the Southwest Indiana community through education and outreach.”

The SwiSTEM Equipment Lending service is free and available to anyone who teaches pre-K through 12th grade in southwest Indiana, Henderson County, Kentucky, and White, Wabash, Edwards and Gallatin Counties in Illinois.

Those interested in learning more about becoming a patron of the SwISTEM Equipment Lending Service can visit USI.edu/stem, or contact Paige Walling, SwISTEM Circulation Supervisor, at pdwalling@usi.edu.
