PlySpace Artist Residency Accepting Applications

PlySpace is an artist-in-residence program in Muncie, Indiana, that is dedicated to offering visual artists, writers, performers, designers, and other creative individuals time and space to investigate and pursue their own practices. Additionally, it serves as a platform for experimentation and provocation by catalyzing conversation and collaboration with various Muncie communities. PlySpace facilitates opportunities for residents to engage with the public through partnership and programming that is tailored to their area of interest. PlySpace is funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Spring 2022 Residency Term Application is now open, with a deadline of July 1, 2021 at 11:59 PM. All applications are submitted here.

How Processing COVID-19 as an Artist Transformed My Arts in Health Practice

No one living in New York last spring will forget the tension and the morbidity that enveloped the city when COVID-19 hit. In that period, all I heard were sirens and birds—an eerie silence for a metropolis that “never sleeps.”

My roommates and I fully dealt with contracting the virus that April—from extreme fatigue and chest pressure to headaches, fever, and the loss of taste and smell. In this milieu, I was attending virtual classes for my Arts in Health graduate certificate program, and observing my savings dwindle as work contracts and opportunities disappeared.

While my body physically healed, feelings of uncertainty and anxiety overpowered me. Some days were an absolute struggle, but thankfully, I knew I wasn’t alone in my reaction and circumstances as many of my friends and peers were down and out. Even though all my work was canceled—including my first invitation to curate and co-produce a show in Manhattan — I knew I had to release what I was feeling.

Hancock Health Seeks Fabric, Visual Artists to Create Head Scarves Designs with Cancer Patients

Hancock Health, in collaboration with Well Done Marketing, seeks a Central Indiana-based artist skilled in fabric art or visual art to provide a hands-on arts experience for up to four Hancock Health patients who have completed their oncology treatment. Candidates must provide a portfolio of work and demonstrate a background in or previous experience in art therapy and/or teaching adult students of any ability. The selected artist will receive up to a $2,000 stipend ($500 per participating patient) plus the cost of materials. The project must be completed between August and October 2021. Applications are due Wednesday, June 30, 2021.

Otters sign former USI pitcher Austin Gossmann

The Evansville Otters have signed former University of Southern Indiana pitcher Austin Gossmann to their active roster.
Gossmann joins the Otters for his first season in professional baseball.
Gossmann last pitched for the University of Southern Indiana in the most recent Spring season.
In his senior year, Gossmann made 12 appearances and 11 starts, posting a 4-5 record and 5.34 ERA.
Gossmann pitched at USI for three seasons between 2019-2021, with an overall win-loss record of 9-8.
Before attending USI, Gossmann pitched his freshman year at the University of South Alabama. Gossman is a graduate of Avon High School, just outside Indianapolis.
 
The right-hander joins the likes of Matt Chavarria and Kyle Griffin, also two former USI pitchers who had stints with the Otters in the last five seasons.
 

The Evansville Otters are the 2006 and 2016 Frontier League champions.

Meet Vincennes University’s national award-winning extraordinary nursing faculty and students

Faculty and students at Vincennes University and Vincennes University Jasper have distinguished themselves in nursing. They are recipients of national awards that celebrate them for the selfless and incredible work they do for others.
Three individuals at the Vincennes Campus and three at the VU Jasper Campus were recognized with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty and the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students.
The awards recognize the faculty who inspire compassionate care in students and students who demonstrate it during their education.
The student award winners include VU’s Bryce Bilskie and Rachel Richardson and VU Jasper’s Elizabeth Bennett and Cassie Foster.
“By honoring students with the DAISY Student Nurse Award, it is designed to remind students, even on the hardest days in nursing school, why they want to be a nurse,” VU College of Health Sciences and Human Performance Dean Michelle Cummins said. “It is important to celebrate what it truly means to be a nurse, by recognizing these hard-working nursing students for the above-and-beyond care and compassion shown to patients and their families. It is the nurse-patient connection that makes all the difference to patients and their families in their healthcare experience. These students exemplify that quality that makes great nurses truly great. Congratulations, 2021 DAISY Student Nurse Award recipients!”
VU Jasper Professor Melissa Belcher and VU Professor Emily Bushnell were honored with faculty awards.
“The DAISY faculty award honorees personify Vincennes University Nursing Department’s remarkable impact on students and therefore patients,” Cummins said. “These faculty members consistently demonstrate excellence through their classroom knowledge, clinical expertise, and extraordinary compassionate care. Congratulations to all for being recognized as outstanding role models in our nursing community!”
The family of the late Patrick Barnes created The DAISY Foundation and awards to ensure nurses, like the ones who cared for Barnes during the last weeks of his life, are saluted for their education, training, brainpower, and the skill they put into their work along with the caring nature they deliver care.

2021 VU Jasper DAISY Extraordinary Nursing Faculty Award
Melissa Belcher (RN, MSN): “My first year of nursing school, I failed Mrs. Belcher’s class. Most nursing classes come pretty naturally to me, but Pediatrics did not. She constantly gave me positive feedback because she knew I could do more and she was right. I may have failed that year, but by the end of our meetings/class, I knew I was going to come back stronger and more confident than before. I enter Year Two and start my Maternity class. Another class that I struggled in. She never gave up and continued the positive constructive feedback. She may never know how much helped me, but I will never forget.”
2021 VU Jasper DAISY Extraordinary Nursing Student Award
Cassie Foster (Associate of Science Nursing Student): “This student manages nursing school, full-time job requirements, and family commitments extremely well. Maintains a good GPA, turns in quality work, all while performing excellent skills at the bedside. Always willing to do whatever task is asked of her without complaint.”

Bryce Bilskie (Associate of Science Nursing Student): “He does not need direction to jump in and help his fellow students when they are in need of help, he just does it. One particular instance during his clinical time in the fall of 2020, Bryce and another classmate were caring for a patient who had dementia. The patient had been a challenging one for staff to care for. Bryce and his classmate approached care for this patient in such a compassionate manner. He took care of this patient as he would have if it would have been his grandmother or family member. The patient improved dramatically as a result of the kind and caring approach to her care.”

Emily Bushnell (RN, MSN): “She was made for her role in the nursing department at VU. She has a magnetic kind of personality that everyone wants to be around. She has encouraged me and boosted my confidence in myself and my abilities in one of the most pivotal times in my life being in school. She wants all of her students to succeed in nursing, but she will not let client care suffer in any way. She sees the potential people have and calls it out. She believes in her students but makes sure they gain the knowledge and experience to be careful, effective future nurses. She’s my hero all day.”

Rachel Richardson (Associate of Science Nursing Student): “She is extremely empathetic to her patients and their situations. Just yesterday, she became overwhelmed with her feelings on the psych floor. She waited until clinical was over to express it. She sees them for the human beings they are. She has clear compassion for her patients. She demonstrates unconditional regard for all clients.”

Hoosier Alums Highlight Wednesday Prelims Brinegar Earns Spot in 800m Freestyle Final

Three Hoosiers alums, Zach Apple, Cody Miller and Blake Pieroni, advanced to semifinal heats, while redshirt junior Michael Brinegar nabbed a spot in the 800m Freestyle Finals on day four of the 2020 Olympic Trials at the CHI Health Center on Wednesday morning.

The Wave II eight-day Trials competition serves as the sole qualifier for pool swimmers on the U.S. Olympic Team for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The top 16 times out of the preliminary heats will form the semifinals for all events at 200m or less, with the top eight semifinalists advancing to the finals. In events 400m or longer, the top eight swimmers out of the preliminary heats will head straight to the finals.

Athletes will earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team roster at each of the eight finals sessions.

100m FREESTYLE

Blake Pieroni used a monster back half to earn the second seed in the semifinal round at the conclusion of the men’s 100m Freestyle preliminary heats. He was the only swimmer in the field to return under 25 seconds (24.95) to finish at 48.14. Zach Apple won the final heat of the prelims to finish third overall at 48.21.

Jack Franzman finished 39th overall, besting his entry rank by over 25 spots, with a time of 50.02, over 0.3 seconds faster than his career-best time.

200m BUTTERFLY

After a couple of close calls in the prelims of the IM events, rising senior Mackenzie Looze finished 35th overall with a time of 2:16.88 in the women’s 200m Butterfly prelims.

200m BREASTSTROKE

Olympic bronze medalist Cody Miller earned a second swim by finishing 11th in the preliminary heats of the men’s 200m Breaststroke with a time of 2:12.17.

Indiana signee Josh Matheny registered a time of 2:13.88 to place 20th overall. Sophomore-to-be Maxwell Reich finished 22nd with a time of 2:14.04 and Wave I qualifier Tristan DeWitt placed 47th at 2:18.47.

800m FREESTYLE

2021 Big Ten Champion Michael Brinegar earned the fourth-fastest preliminary time in the 800m Freestyle at 7:55.50 to earn a spot in Thursday night’s final.

Pro swimmer Zane Grothe placed 12th with a time of 8:00.00. Rising senior Mikey Calvillo finished 32nd at 8:11.32 and senior Ben McDade placed 45th out of the prelims with a time of 8:19.83.

MacNamee hits another walk-off for the Otters

The Evansville Otters rallied to win their fourth extra-innings victory of the season Tuesday, as Elijah MacNamee walked-it-off in the bottom of the tenth inning against the Gateway Grizzlies to give the Otters a 3-2 win.

 

For four innings, Polo Portela and Jordan Barrett traded scoreless frames in a pitcher’s duel at Bosse Field. That was until Grizzlies catcher Chase Vallot hit a two-run homer with two outs in the top of the fifth inning to give the Grizzlies a two-run lead.

 

The Otters answered right back, following a two-out walk to Miles Gordon and a subsequent double from Andy DeJesus, J.R. Davis tied the game with a two-run base knock to centerfield.

 

Polo Portela pitched a scoreless sixth, logging a quality start, before being relieved in the seventh by Tyler Spring. Spring pitched a scoreless inning, while striking out two and walking one.

 

Taylor Wright took over matters in the top of the eighth. He pitched two innings, and retired all six batters he faced while punching out two.

 

After the Otters failed to score in the bottom of the ninth, Evansville and Gateway went to extras under the international tie-breaker rule. Otters closer Logan Sawyer came on to try and keep the game tied.

 

On a fly ball to centerfield, automatic runner Abdiel Diaz advanced to third with only one out. Sawyer managed to induce a ground ball to third baseman Cristopher Pujols from Vallot, keeping the go-ahead run at third.

 

Sawyer got a ground ball to short to get out of the inning with the tied game still intact.

 

Elijah MacNamee strolled to the plate to leadoff the bottom of the tenth with Riley Krane at second base. MacNamee crushed a ball into the left-centerfield gap, over the head of the left fielder Axel Johnson, to win the ballgame in walk-off fashion.

 

Logan Sawyer earned the win, while the loss went to Justin Watts.

 

The Otters and Grizzlies will meet again Wednesday night in the second game of the series from Bosse Field. First pitch will be at 6:35 p.m, with a 6:20 p.m. pregame show on Frontier League LiveTV.

Wednesday’s game will be a Senior Connection Wednesday, where seniors 55 and older can purchase a general admission ticket for only $2.

100m BREASTSTROKE

For the second time in as many Olympic Trials, Lilly King won the women’s 100m Breaststroke to cement her place on Team USA for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. She sprinted out quickly, hitting the turn at 30.34 and held on for the victory at 1:04.79.

She is the first woman to qualify outright for Team USA in the 100m Breaststroke in back-to-back Olympic Games since Tracy Caulkins won the Olympic Trials in 1980 and 1984.

Indiana Swim Club trainee Annie Lazor settled for the bronze position with a time of 1:05.60. She, along with King, will both be back in the preliminary heats of the 200m Breaststroke on Thursday morning.

200m FREESTYLE

Indiana alumnus Zach Apple will await a potential Olympic roster spot for the 800m Freestyle Relay after finishing fifth in the 200m Freestyle final with a time of 1:46.45, besting his seed time by nearly one-third of a second.

Rio gold medalist Blake Pieroni finished seventh in the final with a time of 1:46.57, just ahead of his seed time of 1:46.62. Both Apple and Pieroni will be back in action tomorrow morning for the 100m Freestyle preliminary heats.

200m BUTTERFLY

Hoosier Corey Gambardella cruised to a career-best time of 1:56.56 in the first semifinal heat of the men’s 200m Butterfly. His time placed him sixth and earned him a spot in Wednesday night’s final.

Senators Braun And Young Honors 125th Anniversary of Indiana Veterans Home

Senator Mike Braun and Senator Todd Young introduced a resolution with Rep. Jim Baird (IN-04) to recognize the 125th anniversary of the Indiana Veterans Home.

Since 1896, the Indiana Veterans home has maintained a strong tradition of providing care to Hoosier veterans and their families.

“The men and women who serve our nation and defend our values deserve the best care possible,” said Senator Mike Braun. “The Indiana Veterans Home has long been a cornerstone for veteran care in the Hoosier State and I am proud to recognize their 125 years of dedication to our military heroes and their families.”

“For over a century, the Indiana Veterans Home has provided Hoosier veterans and their families with the care and service they have earned,” said Senator Young. “I am honored to join Senator Braun and Congressman Baird to honor the 125th anniversary of the Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette.”

“Since its inception, the Indiana Veterans Home has been a refuge for our heroes and their families, providing a standard of care worthy of their service to this nation,” said Rep.
