Three Hoosier Freestylers Qualify for Olympics

King, Lazor Earn Top-Two Breaststroke Seeds

OMAHA, Neb. – Indiana swimming put three freestylers through to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and two swimmers to the finals of the women’s 200m Breaststroke in the fifth night of action at the 2020 Olympic Trials at the CHI Health Center on Thursday night.

The Wave II eight-day Trials competition serves as the sole qualifier for pool swimmers on the U.S. Olympic Team for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The top 16 times out of the preliminary heats will form the semifinals for all events at 200m or less, with the top eight semifinalists advancing to the finals. In events 400m or longer, the top eight swimmers out of the preliminary heats will head straight to the finals.

Athletes will earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team roster at each of the eight finals sessions.

100m FREESTYLE

Two former Hoosiers punched tickets to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in the 100m Freestyle in Zach Apple and Blake Pieroni. Apple finished second overall with a time of 47.72 to advance in both the 100m Freestyle and 400m Freestyle Relay in Tokyo. He posted the fastest back-half split with a final 50 at 24.70. Pieroni claimed the third spot in the final standings with a time of 48.16 and will be part of the U.S. men’s 400m Freestyle Relay for the second-straight Olympic event.

800m FREESTYLE

Michael Brinegar swam a lifetime-best mark of 7:49.94 to earn a second-place finish and a spot on Team USA in the 800m Freestyle. The time ranks Brinegar as the 10th-fastest performer in the history of the event for U.S. men. He topped his previous personal best (7:54.56) by nearly five seconds in his comeback effort. The Columbus, Ind., native touched the wall at 750 meters in third place and trailed the lead pack by over two seconds. He closed the final 50 in 27.35, easily the fastest split in the field and the only swimmer to crack 28 seconds on the final leg of the race.

200m BREASTSTROKE

Lilly King, who is already through to Tokyo in the 100m Breaststroke, swam the fastest time in the 200m Breaststroke semifinals at 2:22.73 to earn the top seed in tomorrow night’s final. Training partner Annie Lazor secured the second-quickest time at 2:22.80 to position herself well for an Olympic bid.

Mackenzie Looze shaved two seconds off her career-best time in the 200m Breaststroke in a 10th-place finish out of the first semifinal with a time of 2:27.85.

200m BACKSTROKE

Wave I qualifier Jacob Steele outpaced his seed time (2:01.07) and entry seed (36th) to place 12th out of the semifinals of the 200m Backstroke with a time of 2:00.58.

Ivy Tech Community College Offers Enroll ‘N Go June 23rd And 24th

0

Ivy Tech Community College Evansville is planning an enrollment event designed to make it easier for potential and continuing students to get enrolled for fall classes.

Enroll ‘N Go, planned for June 23 and 24, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. each day, will allow students to come by campus, where everything they need to do will be located in one area. After signing in, students will be texted when it is time to get started. Advisors, Enrollment Center staff, and program chairs of the college will be on hand to assist students.

Enrolling now, helps to ensure students can get the classes they need, at the times and course delivery methods they prefer. Ivy Tech will have in-person classes this fall, as well as the flexibility of online, virtual, and the Learn Anywhere options, which combines all three as needed. Fall semester begins August 18.

Plus, starting this fall, Ivy Tech becomes one of the first schools in Indiana and first community colleges in the country to adopt a new tuition model, Ivy+, which focuses on ensuring students have equitable access, transparency of cost and a seamless experience.

Ivy+ transforms the tuition structure by including required course materials, such as textbooks, as a regularly assessed fee. Ivy+ will also charge the same tuition rate for full-time students enrolled in 12 or more credits.  If a student takes 12 credits, 15 or even 24 credits in a given term, the cost of tuition will be the same for the student. Part-time students will see their tuition frozen for the next two years and will continue to pay per credit hour.

As part of the Ivy+ rollout, Ivy Tech will cover the cost of textbooks for students in 2021-2022 through the federal government’s Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF).

Enroll ‘N Go Dates:

  • Wednesday, July 23, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.: School of Advanced Manufacturing, Engineering & Applied Science; School of Arts, Science and Education, and the Frank L. Hilton MD School of Health Sciences
  • Wednesday, June 24, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.: School of Business, Logistics & Supply Chain; School of Arts, Science, and Education, and School of Public Affairs & Social Services; and Information Technology

Anthem Blue Cross And Blue Shield Foundation To Award Behavioral Health Support To Youth First, Inc.

0

Today at 11:00 am CT, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation will present an award of $78,574 to Youth First, Inc.

Youth First partners with 92 schools across 11 Indiana counties. Youth First Social Workers follow behavioral health best practices to proactively meet with individual students, facilitate small groups, and present to classrooms and large groups as well as consult with parents, teachers, and other community agencies. They are easily accessed by any enrolled student, and services are always free of charge. When school buildings closed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 crisis, this low-barrier access to crucial mental health support was threatened.

Thanks to the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation grant, Youth First has now equipped its clinical team with HIPAA-compliant telehealth tools and training to continue their critical work. Through this funding, their proven model of building life skills for mental health resilience and brokering community resources to meet basic needs can continue, if and when school buildings are closed, or students or staff are quarantined or ill. These telehealth tools allowed Youth First’s services and programs to be delivered uninterrupted this past school year, despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Indiana, data from the  State of the Nation’s Mental Health report shows significantly fewer mental health diagnoses last year, particularly among children and adolescents, compared to 2019.

· 10 percent overall drop for young children

· 5 percent overall drop for adolescents

· 13 percent drop for young children diagnosed with ADHD
· 9 percent drop for adolescents diagnosed with ADHD

These findings are part of a report based on Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield claims from 1.8 million Hoosiers.

Vincennes University Board Of Trustees Strengthens Commitment To Keeping VU Affordable

0
Reinforcing Vincennes University’s commitment to providing a high-quality education at great value for students and families, the VU Board of Trustees approved a modest tuition increase at its meeting on June 16 in Green Activities Center.
VU remains the lowest-priced residential college in Indiana and is significantly lower by several thousand dollars despite the increase. It also has the state’s second-lowest tuition rates.
A focus on keeping VU affordable and accessible for all persists especially due to the pandemic and the financial impact students and their families may be experiencing. In-state tuition will increase $200 in 2021-22, bringing the total to $6,450. The cost in 2022-23 will be $6,656.
At the same time, VU has increased scholarship aid to assist more students and has taken several bold measures to offset the cost of attending VU.
“The millions of dollars in enhanced scholarships are important to help us assist those who have been impacted by the pandemic and the challenges they may have faced in their family and financial circumstances. We hope these additional scholarships will encourage more students to take advantage of the great educational experiences that Vincennes University offers at all of our campuses and locations,” VU President Dr. Chuck Johnson said.
As part of that initiative, nearly a half-million dollars has been allocated to additional scholarships for all University sites and locations across Indiana, online, and at military education locations.
The scholarship application deadline has also been extended to Sunday, Aug. 15 to allow more students to take advantage of available aid.
Another special scholarship initiative was launched specifically to help students on the
Vincennes Campus. Newly admitted students and eligible returning students can save up to $10,000 on University Housing. The Residential Opportunity Scholarship is worth up to $5,000 a year, renewable for two years of study.
VU and the Vincennes University Foundation awarded more than $4.2 million in scholarships for the 2020-21 academic year. On average, students received $3,447 over the academic year.
This year’s scholarship awards will be even greater. According to Johnson, with the new housing scholarship, the cost of attendance for a student living on the Vincennes Campus will be down 28 percent each of the next two years.
To help more individuals reach their potential and goal of earning a college degree, VU has partnered with the Pace Community Action Agency in Vincennes. To better serve VU students who are parents or guardians, the partnership provides free childcare through the Early Head Start and Head Start programs to children ages birth to 5 years old. This illustrates VU’s commitment to ensure everyone has access to greater opportunities.
“VU prides itself not on who we exclude, but all we include. The University provides outstanding and life-transforming opportunities for everyone. We want to make it even more affordable and accessible,” Johnson added.
In additional business, the Board of Trustees approved a general operating budget of $85.8 million for the 2021-22 fiscal year and $87.6 million for the 2022-23 fiscal year.
Updates were presented to the Board by Senior Director of External Relations Sarah Fortune, Director of Assessment Chad Bebee, and Senior Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Research Dale Pietrzak.
According to Fortune, enrollment for Fall Semester 2021 looks optimistic as the projected incoming numbers are trending above this point last year. She recognizes that there are still two months to go in the recruiting season, and she remains cautiously optimistic. Fortune pointed out, “It’s not too late to apply for fall, and our Admissions team is ready to help new applicants enroll.”
Fall Classes are scheduled to begin at VU on Monday, Aug. 16.
VU officials said they are planning for a return to vibrant campuses filled with people and buzzing with activity. VU plans to be back fully in person with face-to-face classroom and laboratory instruction. Student activities and residential experiences will also return to normal.
The University is not requiring COVID-19 vaccinations for students, faculty, and staff, but individuals are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated.
Under current policy, individuals who have been fully vaccinated are no longer required to wear masks on VU campuses and sites, including inside VU facilities.
