EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville cross country team has released its 2024 schedule highlighted by one home meet and two returning meets.
“This year’s schedule will keep a sense of familiarity with many opportunities to face strong competition ahead of the conference championship,” says Head Coach Dylan Anderson. “We are also thrilled to be hosting at Angel Mounds again alongside the Evansville Sports Commission and USI. The roster this year is very young and talented, so I am excited for them to dive right in and to see what we can accomplish this season.”
The Purple Aces will begin their cross country season at the end of the month at Eastern Illinois on Friday, August 30th. It will be the first time UE returns to Charleston in six years for a cross country meet.
Three weeks later Evansville will return to action at the John McNichols Invite, hosted by Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) member Indiana State on Saturday, September 21st. It will be the fourth straight year that the Aces will run the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Invite.
UE then returns to another familiar meet on Saturday, October 5th at the Live in Lou Classic. Hosted by Louisville, Live in Lou is one of the largest cross country meets in the United States. The 2024 meet will be Evansville’s fourth straight appearance running at E. P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park.
The Aces will host their only home meet of the season on Friday, October 18th at Angel Mounds. This season will be the second to last at Angel Mounds Cross Country course for the Aces as they host the Angel Mounds Invitational.
UE will then attend its furthest meet of the season at the MVC Cross Country Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Hosted by Northern Iowa, Evansville will run at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course for the team’s final conference action on Friday, November 1st.
The Aces then wrap up the season at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship in Akron, Ohio. Postseason action for UE will be hosted by the Mid-American Conference on Friday, November 15th.

Aces men’s soccer comes up big in win against Memphis

0
The Purple Aces began an early season win streak with the 3-0 victory
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – An early lead helped the University of Evansville men’s soccer team cruise to a 3-0 win over the Memphis Tigers on Sunday evening.
Senior forward Nacho Diaz Barragan (Almeria, Spain) added goals two and three of the year in the second half to help the Purple Aces to their second win in as many games. Junior defender Nacho Diaz Caneja (Coruña, Spain / Oregon State) also put up a goal for UE in Sunday’s 3-0 victory over the Tigers, helping Evansville to an early lead with a goal in the seventh minute. Freshman goalkeeper Michal Mroz (Elk Grove, Ill. / Elk Grove HS) picked up the first clean sheet of his career, making six stops in the win.
The Aces got off to a hot start as senior midfielder Jose Vivas (Teruel, Spain) took the first shot of the game in less than 30 seconds. And UE kept the pressure going as Diaz Caneja found the back of the net in the seventh minute. Through traffic, Vivas poked out a cross to Diaz Caneja in front of the net that Diaz Caneja buried into the left side of the goal.
While Evansville wouldn’t find the back of the net again in the first half, the team did take the lead in shots five attempts to the Tigers two. It was a slower start to the second half for both teams after some fireworks near the end of the first half resulted in a yellow card for players on both sides. But it wasn’t long until the Aces found their offense again in the 62nd minute.
Diaz Barragan found his way around the Tigers goalkeeper after an initial blocked shot. The second attempt went into the top left corner of the net for his first unassisted goal of the season. Just 11 minutes later Diaz Barragan scored his third goal of the season for his first brace of the year.
In the 73rd minute of the game, fifth-year forward Kai Phillip took a free kick from the right line of the penalty area that found Diaz Barragan just past the penalty arc. Diaz Barragan then buried the cross with his right foot into the bottom right corner of the net.  In the final 17 minutes of the game, Mroz faced nine shots with three saves to keep it a shutout for UE.
Evansville is currently off to its best start since the 2017 season when the Aces began the year with four straight wins. UE will try to add win number three in a week against Southern Indiana on Sunday, September 1st. Along with hosting the Mayor’s Cup, Evansville will celebrate the program’s 50th season next weekend. Kickoff for Sunday’s match is set for 7 p.m

UE women’s soccer drops first road match to Western Kentucky

The Purple Aces tallied their first goal of the season on Sunday night
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The University of Evansville women’s soccer team couldn’t overcome an early second-half deficit in a 4-1 loss to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.
The Purple Aces found the back of the net for the first time in the young 2024 season on Sunday night. Redshirt freshman forward Paige Radel (Metamora, Ohio / Evergreen HS) netted her first collegiate goal in the 68th minute with some help from senior forward Hailey Autenrieb (Cincinnati / Seaton HS).
But one goal wasn’t enough for UE to keep up with a second-half offensive onslaught form the Hilltoppers. It was a quiet first half as only three shots found their way on goal from either side. Sophomore goalkeeper Elke Travis (Henderson, Nev. / Faith Lutheran HS) stopped both attempts from WKU in the first 45 minutes as it was a nil-nil game going into the second half.
It was a quick start in the second half for Evansville as sophomore midfielder Ashlyn Koutsos (Cumming, Ga. / West Forsyth HS) launched a shot to the left corner. But the Aces found themselves down early as the Hilltoppers scored two goals in under three minutes shortly after. UE cut into Western Kentucky’s lead in the 68th minute as Radel found the bottom right corner of the net off a long cross from Autenrieb.
The lone goal wouldn’t be enough for Evansville to come back from the one-goal deficit. Despite a quality chance in the 80th minute for forward Amy Velazquez (Avon, Ind. / Avon HS) the Aces didn’t find the back of the net again. But the Hilltoppers continued to pour on the pressure, resulting in two more goals in the 81st and 89th minutes, handing UE a 4-1 loss.
Evansville returns home this upcoming week for a matchup with the Lindenwood Lions. It will be the Aces first program game against the Lions on Thursday, August 29th. Kickoff for Thursday’s match is set for 6 p.m. from Arad McCutchan Stadium.

Otters fall in home finale

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Evansville Otters dropped the final home game of 2024 to the Gateway Grizzlies on Sunday afternoon 7-3 at Bosse Field.

The Grizzlies (56-33) opened the scoring in the first inning with an unearned run. Answering in the home half of the frame, the Otters (41-50) dropped one on the board with a Delvin Zinn sacrifice fly to center field.

Taking the final lead of the game, Gateway pushed back ahead in the fourth innings with one run, before tacking on four more in the fifth and another run in the sixth.

Evansville answered in the seventh frame. Mendham drew a walk with two outs and two batters later, Pavin Parks hit an RBI single to center.

Moving to the ninth, the Otters finalized the scoring with a Mendham double. He scored again with a Giovanni DiGiacomo fielder’s choice RBI.

Gateway racked up a baker’s dozen hits to Evansville’s eight. Mendham went 3-for-3 at the dish, reaching base in all five plate appearances with two walks.

With the loss, Zach Smith (7-7) gave up six runs on seven hits. While he struck out seven, too much damage came in the fifth without recording an out before he was pulled. Collin Sullivan (9-5) took the win in five innings of one-run ball.

While the home season is over, the Otters still have five more games to go. The club has tomorrow off before opening a new series in Chicago against the Schaumburg Boomers on Tuesday. The first pitch is at 6:30 pm. CT. Coverage is available on the Otters Digital Network and FloBaseball.

USI comes up just short in front end of road swing at EKU

0

RICHMOND, Ky. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Soccer came up just short in the front end of its two-game road swing Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 at Eastern Kentucky University.

Southern Indiana (0-2-1) caught an unlucky break early on, as an Eastern Kentucky (1-3-0) shot near the penalty spot tipped off the glove of redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Anna Markland (Hoover, Alabama), off the post, and into the goal.

The Colonels, a high-volume shooting squad on Sunday, continued to pressure and challenge USI. The Screaming Eagles’ defense stood up to the challenge to keep the score a one-goal difference.

USI gained possession and flipped the field position into the attacking third in the 25th minute. Senior midfielder Maggie Duggan (Defiance, Missouri) put up USI’s first shot of the game just before the hydration break, which was saved by EKU’s senior goalkeeper Marah Krick.

Later, the Screaming Eagles had another good opportunity when junior defender Brynn Quick (Cottage Grove, Minnesota) sent a free kick from near midfield that went straight toward the goal and forced the Colonel’s netminder to make a diving save. Following an impressive save on the other end by Markland deep into the first half, Quick had another free kick on target and saved. Sunday was the second consecutive match that Quick recorded two shots on goal.

Looking to build on its 1-0 halftime advantage, Eastern Kentucky continued its aggressive attack with many shots in the second half. USI’s defense continued to be stout by blocking several shots.

Markland and senior keeper Zoe Lintner (Wildwood, Missouri), who entered the match in the middle of the second half for the last 26-plus minutes, also continued to stand in the way of EKU’s attempts toward any insurance with multiple saves.

Despite the solid defensive effort to keep the Screaming Eagles within reach of the 1-0 difference, a breakthrough reward would not come for USI. Southern Indiana had another potential tying chance on a corner kick in the middle of the second half when a header by junior midfielder Peyton Murphy (Bargersville, Indiana) could not find an opening across the goal line.

Southern Indiana faced 22 shots on the defensive end from Eastern Kentucky but held the Colonels to eight shots on goal. USI finished with eight shots and four on target. Junior forward Payton Seymour (Louisville, Kentucky) tied Quick with a team-high two shot attempts in the match. The combination of Markland and Lintner between the posts totaled six saves, four and two, respectively.
