COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund of the Greater Evansville Region Announces Fifteenth and Sixteenth Rounds of Allocations

0

Evansville, IN – The COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund of the Greater Evansville Region has awarded two new rounds of allocations, granting $282,000 to 12 nonprofit agencies and $347,000 to 12 organizations, respectively. A total of 28 organizations addressing the community needs of relief, recovery, and restoration applied during Rounds Fifteen and Sixteen. In total, the Response Fund has awarded approximately $3.9 million for 155 nonprofit applications.

Disbursements made in these two rounds will 1) aid in funding mental health and suicide-prevention training, after school programming, financial literacy classes, and transportation services for vulnerable populations; 2) underwrite building upgrades, the Delaware courtyard project, and upgrades to the Bike Share program; and 3) offset revenue loss due to pandemic restrictions.

As part of Round Fifteen, Parenting Time Center was awarded $40,284 to support safe, supervised court-appointed and voluntary visitation, which are unique services to the local area. The funds will be used for their new Nurturing Parenting Program curriculum which is designed to build nurturing skills as an alternative to abusive and neglectful parenting practices. The grant will cover operational program expenses including staff training, materials, technology, testing and consultation with Southwestern Behavioral Healthcare.

As part of Round Sixteen, Habitat for Humanity of Evansville was awarded $70,000. A portion of the allocation will be used to purchase personal protective equipment such as wipes and cleaners, secure early temporary water hookup on job sites for volunteer safety, as well as cover the increase in costs per house for five houses. Senator Braun Calls For Reinstatement Of Teacher Suspended For Bringing Pro-Life Speaker To Class

0

JASPER, IN — Today, U.S. Senator Mike Braun is calling for the reinstatement of a South Bend teacher who was suspended for bringing in a Right to Life Michiana speaker to present to their health class at Clay High School.

As reported in the Associated Press:

“Jackie Appleman, executive director of Right to Life Michiana, said her organization tailored its presentation for a public school visit and did not promote any religious or moral views. ’We just talked about the medical and scientific facts of fetal development and what the abortion procedure actually looks like,’ Appleman said.”

“The classroom should be a place that holds a diversity of thought, and students should be given all possible resources to make their own informed decisions. Teachers must not be unfairly targeted because of politics, and I am calling for this teacher’s immediate reinstatement.”  – Senator Mike Braun

YESTERYEAR: 400 Block of SE Riverside Drive

0

400 Block of SE Riverside Drive

This early view of Southeast Riverside and Cherry Street is still recognizable today. The stately residence on the corner (left) has stood since 1856. Originally designed in the Italianate style, it was remodeled to its current French-inspired appearance in 1873.

Across the street from the row of houses is Sunset Park, which was just beginning to be developed around the turn of the century when this photo was taken. The large building in the park was a two-story frame residence erected around 1850. In 1906, it became home to the first Evansville Museum but was razed four years later after its condition was deemed unsafe.

After a few decades of homelessness, then regrouping in another old building on Northwest Second Street, the Museum returned to its original location in Sunset Park when a new facility opened in the late 1950s.
