400 Block of SE Riverside Drive by Pat Sides

0

This early view of Southeast Riverside and Cherry Street is still recognizable today. The stately residence on the corner (left) has stood since 1856. Originally designed in the Italianate style, it was remodeled to its current French-inspired appearance in 1873.

Across the street from the row of houses is Sunset Park, which was just beginning to be developed around the turn of the century when this photo was taken. The large building in the park was a two-story frame residence erected around 1850. In 1906, it became home to the first Evansville Museum but was razed four years later after its condition was deemed unsafe.

After a few decades of homelessness, then regrouping in another old building on Northwest Second Street, the Museum returned to its original location in Sunset Park when a new facility opened in the late 1950s.

Arson Diamond Flea Market

0

On May 14 around 6:30 p.m. the Evansville Fire Department was called to 1250 E. Diamond Ave., the Diamond Flea Market, for a working structure fire. After putting the fire out, the building was ruled a complete loss.

A State Fire Marshals Investigator determined the fire was intentionally set. Evansville Police Detectives were able to obtain surveillance footage of an individual in the area of the arson when it took place.

After an exhaustive search this person was located at a local hotel. He was then brought to Police Headquarters. After speaking with an E.P.D. Detective and an investigator with the State Fire Marshals Service, Christopher Michael Liggett (25) confessed to starting the fire.

Liggett was charged with Arson and is currently at the Vanderburgh County Corrections Center.

Troopers Investigate Single Vehicle Fatal Crash on I-64, Five Children Injured

0

Posey County – Friday night, May 14, at approximately 8:00, Indiana State Police, Posey County Sheriff’s Office, Posey County EMS, and multiple fire departments responded to a single vehicle crash on I-64 at the 3 mile-marker that claimed the life of an Evansville mother and injured five of her children.

Preliminary investigation revealed Whitney Steverson, 32, of Evansville, was driving a 2003 Ford F-150 pickup truck and traveling east in the driving lane on I-64 at the 3 mile-marker when she swerved into the passing lane and toward the median to avoid rear-ending another vehicle. Steverson attempted to steer away from the median but overcorrected. Her vehicle crossed both eastbound lanes, left the roadway on the south side, rolled, and came to a final rest on its side. Steverson was pronounced dead at the scene by the Posey County Coroner. Steverson’s five children were injured. Jermaine Johnson, Jr, 11, and Ah’myah Roach, 12, were taken to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville where they are currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Ja’myah Johnson, 11, and Ah’mere Roach, 12, were taken to Deaconess Midtown Hospital where they are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Jas’marie Johnson, 3, was originally taken to Deaconess Midtown Hospital, but she was later transported to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis for serious injuries.

The investigation is on-going.

Investigating Officers: Trooper Zack Fulton, Sergeant Kylen Compton and Master Trooper Randy Huddleston, Indiana State Police

Assisting Agencies: Posey County Sheriff’s Office, Posey Co. EMS, Griffin Fire Department, New Harmony Fire Department, Poseyville Fire Department, and the Posey County Coroner.

Lowry Makes History at MVC Outdoor Championship

0

The University of Evansville track and field team completed action of day one of the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championship, hosted by Southern Illinois.

Anna Lowry made history once again, taking home the 10,000-meter championship, which marks the first outdoor title for the Purple Aces in program history. Lowry made a move around two Loyola runners halfway through the race to earn the conference championship. Lowry finished the 10K in 34:46.70, which was 0.56 seconds ahead of the next runner.

Justus Donaldson broke the program record and captured second place in the javelin throw. Donaldson earns all-conference honors with the 57.01-meter attempt.

Ian Alberts took eighth place in the pole vault with a 4.42-meter attempt, matching the effort of two others.

The Aces sit in fifth place in the women’s team rankings with 10 points and sixth place on the men’s side with 8.33 points.

Day two of the MVC Championship will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the multi-events.

Aces battle back to surge to 13-6 series opening win

10-runs scored in seventh and eighth innings help propel Evansville
Battling back from an early deficit, a late surge from the University of Evansville baseball team helped the Aces capture a 13-6 series-opening win over Valparaiso on Friday afternoon at Emory G. Bauer Field in Valparaiso, Ind.

“Great come from behind win for us today. Dug ourselves a hole down 5-0, but grinded out a couple of big innings,” said Aces head baseball coach Wes Carroll. “Eric Roberts had a big day with 5 RBI’s and it was great to our offense step up in the first game of a weekend series. We need to be ready to play 1st pitch tomorrow.”

The Aces were tasked with overcoming an early deficit as Valpo pushed across two runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the second, all unearned that were generated following errors.

The battle back began in the fourth as Danny Borgstrom doubled to left center, scoring Simon Scherry. Following Borgstrom’s double, Eric Roberts drove a two-run home run to right, narrowing Valpo’s lead to just two at 5-3.

Valpo added an insurance run on a solo home run in the sixth, but Evansville had all the answers in the next two innings. A leadoff single from Brent Widder started what would be an explosive inning for Evansville. After a groundout advanced Widder to second, Valpo pulled starting pitcher Ryan Mintz. Evansville responded with back-to-back walks from Ben Komonosky and Troy Beilsmith to load the bases and force another change on the mound for the home team.
With the bases loaded, Tanner Craig pushed the Aces closer with a base hit to left, scoring Widder. Kenton Crews then tied the game with a bases loaded walk.

Continuing to bat with full bases, Simon Scherry was hit by a pitch, scoring Beilsmith and giving the Aces their first lead at 7-6 with still just one out. After an Evansville pop up put two outs on the board following another pitching change, Roberts added to his RBI total with a bases-clearing double, scoring three runs before being thrown-out trying to stretch his hit to a triple as the Aces earned a 9-6 lead.

The momentum continued to favor Evansville in the eighth as four-straight Aces reached base to open the inning. The bases were loaded following a pair of walks and a base hit, which Beilsmith took advantage of, ripping a double down the left field line, scoring Widder and Wilkes. Komonosky scored off a wild pitch during the next at bat and Crews flew out to right, scoring Beilsmith as the Aces took a 13-6 lead.

Starter Shane Gray’s day came to an end prior to the eighth inning, completing his outing with seven innings of work, allowing just one earned run and tallying three strikeouts.

Drew Dominik came on in relief and allowed just one hit over the final two innings, while recording a pair of strikeouts, inducing a double play to end the game in the ninth to hand Evansville a 13-6 win.

Evansville and Valparaiso return to the field on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at Noon at Emory G. Bauer Field in Valparaiso, Ind.
