500 Swimmers To Compete In 2021 City Swim Meet

(Evansville, Ind.)  The 2021 City Swim Meet will be held this Saturday, July 10, and Sunday, July 11, at Mosby Pool.  The preliminaries for the Swim Meet will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, and the finals will start at 9 a.m. on Sunday.  

Nearly 500 swimmers will be participating in the City Swim Meet ranging from age four to over 65 years of age. Everyone is encouraged to come out and support their favorite swimmer and team.

Please note that neighborhood pools will be closed both days in order for staff to assist with the City Swim Meet. Mosby pool will be closed July 9, 10, and 11th for the City Swim Meet. However, they will have their last session of swim lessons on the 9th. 

Hartke Pool will be open normal business hours from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

MVC Announces 2020-21 Academic Honor Roll

One hundred ten student-athletes highlight more than 2,000 of those to earn selection to the 2020-21 Missouri Valley Conference Honor Roll, as announced by the league office.  Those 110 student-athletes earned the league’s highest academic achievement by capturing the Missouri Valley Conference Presidents’ Council Academic Excellence Award.

The Presidents’ Council Academic Excellence Award requires a minimum 3.8 cumulative grade point average, participation in athletics a minimum of two years, and the student-athlete must be within 18 hours of graduation (by the end of the Spring 2021 semester).  Also, 894 student-athletes received the league’s Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award, which requires a minimum grade point average of 3.5 for each of the previous two semesters, a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average, and participation in athletics a minimum of two years.

In addition, the Missouri Valley Conference has announced its 2020-21 Honor Roll, which recognizes academic achievement of student-athletes.  To qualify for the Valley Honor Roll, a student-athlete must have recorded a minimum 3.2 grade point average for a specified term (Fall 2020/Spring 2021), must have been a member of an athletics team, and must have been enrolled full time during the term they earned the honor.

The University of Evansville had six student-athletes earn the Presidents’ Council Academic Excellence Awards.  They include:

 Park-N-Rec Program Returns On July 13 At Bellemeade Park

Join the fun this summer at a different Neighborhood Park around Evansville. The Department of Parks and Recreation is bringing back their mobile recreation program called Park-N-Rec. 

Park-N-Rec will take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons this summer from 1:00 to 3:00pm. You will also be able to find the program at other community outings this summer. The first day of Park-N-Rec will be Tuesday, July 13th at Bellemeade Park. 

Coming back from a successful fall launch, Assistant Sport Director, McKenzie May said this is a perfect time to bring the program back. She said, “Families are looking for things to do in the community now that things are opening back up from the pandemic. Park-N-Rec was able to do that in the fall, and we plan to do it again this summer at different park locations and areas in the community.” At each Neighborhood Park, there will be activities such as: yard games, dancing, arts and crafts, sport games, and much more.

Charles Constantine was a Greek immigrant who relocated to Pawhuska, Osage County, Oklahoma in 1905. Charles bought the Pawhuska House Hotel that had been opened in the 1880’s and he converted the business to the Constantine Theater in 1914. After Constantine sold the theater in 1926 it was renamed the Kihekah Theater. It operated as a movie house from 1926 until it closed in 1981. It has been beautifully restored by the community and once again serves the public as The Constantine Theater. Numerous volunteers have donated money and countless hours of their time to preserving this iconic community asset. The Constantine will be open to the public free of charge for several hours during the Cavalcade Rodeo weekend of July 16th to 17th, 2021. The Redwine family will be having a family reunion jam session, art exhibit and new book launching event during parts of each day and The Constantine will open its concession stand also. 

Mr. Constantine was furthering the Greek theater tradition that began with the western world’s first theater about 500 B.C. It was located in Athens, Greece on the side of the high hill upon which the Acropolis was built and it was named in honor of the Greek god of wine, Dionysus. Playwrites such as Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes began the ancient tradition of entertainment and enlightenment that carries on to today. Along the way such giants of literature as William Shakespeare in England drew upon the wisdom of those marvelous Greeks. Shakespeare’s theater, The Globe, in London is where Hamlet, Act II, scene 2, said “The play’s the thing wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the King.” Hamlet used a play within a play to expose his uncle’s murder of Hamlet’s father. Human nature has often been examined through art but sometimes art is just for fun; not every play is a tragedy. The weekend of July 16th & 17th is to be one of the lighter variety.

The Constantine has been the scene of countless performances over the years and Peg and I were honored to have been invited to exhibit our homemade movie and preview our historical novel JUDGE LYNCH! at the first Ben Johnson, Jr. Film Festival that was held at The Constantine Theater June 11, 2011. Our new novel Unanimous for Murder is a sequel to JUDGE LYNCH!. We are looking forward to once again enjoying the historic atmosphere of the Constantine and maybe re-showing our 19-minute movie. We do not need any extras.

Pawhuska’s favorite son, Ben (Son) Johnson, won an academy award for his portrayal of the owner of the sole movie theater in a small Texas village. The movie, The Last Picture Show, was a metaphor for lost innocence and a declining town. When the theater in that small community closed the town died as did the hopes of its residents. But thanks to the efforts of numerous volunteers, Pawhuska’s theater remains vibrant and forward looking. As someone who grew up attending the Kihekah Theater countless times, it feels good to have it still be an integral part of our lives. 

Maybe we will see you at The Constantine Theater July 16th or July 17th between 12 noon and 6 p.m.; an informal musical performance will take place between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on July 17th. Admittance is free to all events.

Nine IU Swimmers on Rosters Following ISL Draft

The International Swimming League (ISL) held its third annual draft to close out the month of June. One former Hoosier was selected in the draft, while eight with Indiana ties were retained by their squad from a season ago.

Each of the ten ISL franchises were allowed to retain up to 15 swimmers from their roster from the previous season. The teams then entered a rookie draft that consisted of one round and a Fan Vote to determine another retained swimmer. The rosters were then filled out with a 14-round draft consisting of 110 total picks.

Indiana is most represented by the DC Trident. Alumni Bailey Andison, Zach Apple and Cody Miller were all retained by the club. Indiana Swim Club (ISC) trainee Zane Grothe joined the group and was also retained. Finally, recent graduate Mohamed Samy was retained via the vote from the fans.

The London Roar chose to retain ISC member and Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 qualifier Annie Lazor. The franchise selected former Hoosier All-American Vini Lanza (30th overall) in the fourth round.

Additionally, the Cali Condors and Toronto Titans each have one Olympic gold medalist with Hoosier ties on their roster. Cali elected to retain world record holder Lilly King, while Toronto saved the rights to Blake Pieroni.

The International Swimming League has released the official schedule for the regular season of racing for its third season. The regular season will take place in Naples, Italy beginning on Aug. 26, and will last for just over a month.

Season 3 will feature the same 10 teams that took part in season 2 of the league: the eight original teams from the first season, along with the Toronto Titans and Tokyo Frog Kings.

Each team will compete in four matches between Aug. 26-Sept. 26. The six highest-ranked teams from the regular season will automatically advance to the playoff phase. The four lowest-ranked teams after Sept. 6 will take part in Match 11 on Sept. 29-30. The top two finishers will advance to the playoffs.
