Previewing the Matchup: Illinois State

  • The Aces and Sycamores revive a rivalry that has been contested 123 times.
  • Illinois State holds a 69-54 advantage in the series, include capturing the series this season, 3-1, in Normal.
  • The last time the Aces and Redbirds met in the MVC Championship came on May 26, 2016, when Evansville captured a 4-3 win over Illinois State, scoring a run in the bottom of the 10th to advance.
  • Evansville is eyeing its first MVC Championship win since 2017 when the Aces defeated Bradley, 12-2, in Springfield, Mo.
  • Evansville has earned at least a split of its last three series with splits against SIU and Indiana State and a 3-1 series win over Valparaiso.

Tanner Reaches 30 Homers

  • With two home runs in the weekend series over Indiana State, Craig entered an elite club of Aces.
  • Craig now sits at 30 career home runs, becoming just the fifth Evansville player to reach the mark.
  • Craig is eight home runs away from the all-time career record set by Jeff Starks in 1982 with 38.

Troy Enters an Elite Club

  • With a base-hit on Saturday, redshirt senior Troy Beilsmith joined Evansville’s 200 Hit Club.
  • Beilsmith became the first Ace since Ryan Kaczmarski in 2016 and the 27th in program history to reach the mark.
  • Heading into the Championship, Beilsmith could climb up the all-time list needing just five hits to jump into the top 25.

Gibson County Man Arrested for Criminal Recklessness with a Weapon

0

Last night at approximately 7:43, Indiana State Police and Gibson County Sheriff’s Office responded to 108 S. Cross Street in Francisco after Joseph Davis, 48, allegedly pointed a firearm at his wife and threatened his two children. Both children and his wife fled the residence and ran to a neighbor’s house to wait for police.  Moments later, Davis walked to the neighbor’s house and kicked in the front door, but his wife fled on foot and his two children were hiding. Davis fled the area in his Toyota pickup truck when he heard police sirens. Approximately 15 minutes later, Princeton Police located Davis driving his Toyota pickup truck south on CR 850 East near CR 300 South. Princeton Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but Davis refused and continued driving south at approximately 10-15 mph. Davis eventually turned west onto CR 450 South and continued to drive at a slow speed. Davis eventually stopped after seeing tire deflation devices being deployed by Indiana State Police at CR 750 South. Davis was arrested without further incident. Troopers did locate a loaded .38 caliber revolver inside the pickup truck. Davis is currently being held on bond in the Gibson County Jail.

Battery against a Public Safety Official

0

On May 24, around 11:30 a.m., E.P.D. Officer Nathan Jones was traveling north on Heidelbach Ave. at Diamond Ave. when he was flagged down by a male who wanted a ride. The male told Officer Jones that he was just involved in a domestic dispute with a female and he wanted to leave the area before the female returned.

As Officer Jones was speaking to the male the female part of the domestic dispute, later identified as Maeling Smith (18), pulls up in a gold Honda Accord and starts yelling at the male. After being told to stay in her vehicle several times by Officer Jones she refused and continued yelling, causing the male to yell back at her.

To gain control over the situation, Officer Jones attempted to place Smith in custody. As he was attempting to place her in handcuffs she retreated to her vehicle, with Officer Jones still holding onto her. She then placed the vehicle in reverse and accelerated in an attempt to free herself from Officer Jones.

After being drug approximately a city block, Officer Jones was able to free himself from her vehicle. In doing so the car ran over his right arm. Smith stopped the car a short distance later and Officer Jones was able to quickly place her under arrest.

After backup officers arrived and were able to contain the situation, Officer Jones was quickly transported by another officer to a local hospital where he received treatment for his injured arm. At the time of this press release it has not been determined how badly the arm was injured.

Smith was arrested and charged with Battery against a Public Safety Official and Resisting Law Enforcement. She is currently incarcerated at the Vanderburgh County Jail.
