Vanderburgh County Democrats, Evansville Rally for Abortion Rights October 2

0

Join the Vanderburgh County Democratic Party in participating in the October 2nd Evansville Rally for Abortion Rights at the Four Freedoms Monument beginning at 2:00pm.

This is the statement from the Democratic National Committee Chair Jamie Harrison on the SCOTUS failure to block the Texas Abortion Law:

“For nearly five decades in the United States, access to safe, legal abortions has been upheld, as well as the privacy of a decision made between a person and their doctor. But today, thanks to a conservative Supreme Court that has dispensed with decades of precedent, that right has been virtually eliminated across Texas. Due to extremist Republican lawmakers and conservative justices on the Supreme Court, people will have yet another barrier preventing them from accessing the health care they need and have every right to pursue under our Constitution. For many, especially people of color, low income, and rural Americans, this barrier could be insurmountable.”

Lt. Governor’s Awards For The 2021 Excellence In Affordable Housing

Last week concluded the 2021 Statewide Indiana Housing Conference.  Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch held her annual Excellence in Affordable Housing Awards Program. Part of the program is a joint award given by IHCDA and the Indiana Affordable Housing Council to a rural housing development that goes above and beyond to reach members of their community and provide housing for people in a rural area.

Otterbein Commons was the 2021 winner for the Rural Category and is located in Otterbein, Indiana. This rural affordable housing development is a repurposed nursing home building and is the first affordable housing development in town. This edition of 32 units has had a positive impact on the community and continues to do so. Otterbein Commons provides point-to-point transportation, giving residents access to services off-site. They also provide home-delivered meals and utility assistance.

It is a pleasure to work with Otterbein Commons and share some of the great ways they have impacted their community!

EVANSVILLE CIVIC THEATRE’S UNDERGROUND SERIES RETURNS HOME AS A SEASON OF STAGED READINGS!

Evansville, Indiana— September 27, 2021 — Following the close of our SOLD OUT run of the musical “Nunsense”,  Evansville Civic Theatre announces the opening of our reimagined, and edgier, Underground series of staged readings.

WHO:  Evansville Civic Theatre

WHAT:  “Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde”.  Written by Moises Kaufmen, and directed by guest director Dominic Hoskins.

WHEN: Thursday September 30 – Sunday October 2.  Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm, Sunday at 2:30 pm.

WHERE:  In our home theatre:  Evansville Civic Theatre – 717 N. Fulton Ave., Evansville

TICKETS: Cost is $10.00 (+ a small processing fee), and tickets are available at:

www.evvcivic.org  and  (812) 425-2800

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

Synopsis of the play:  In the United Kingdom, homosexuality was illegal in the 1890’s.  Gross Indecency recounts the 1895 arrest and trials that ended with Wilde’s two-year imprisonment for the “gross indecency” of sodomy.  Drawn from period documents seamlessly – and dramatically – compiled by Kaufman into a cohesive, compelling narrative, “Indecency” presents the times of the man as deftly as it captures the protagonist in all his self-aggrandizing complexity.

Staged reading note:  This production will be presented as a staged reading; as such, emphasis will be on the performance and voice of the actors rather than gender, physical attributes, sets, special effects, etc. Actors will be dramatizing the play with books in hand.

Covid precautions:  To ensure the safety of our patrons, volunteers, and staff, we have put a few temporary measures in place to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 inside the theatre. While we hope that these changes do not have to last the entire season, they will be in place as long as COVID-19 and the delta variant continue to pose a threat to our community.

All patrons, staff, and volunteers are required to wear masks inside the building at all times.

Seating capacity in the theatre will be reduced to 1/2, in order to allow for social distancing.

All tickets are general admission. In order to ensure proper social distancing, ushers will seat all patrons upon their arrival. This will allow us to seat all groups together, but still maintain CDC-recommended distancing guidelines.

All performers are required to either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, or to wear a mask throughout their performance.

Thank you for your understanding as we attempt to navigate our way back to live theatre in this difficult time. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions about any of these policies, and we look forward to seeing everyone back in the theatre for our 96th season!!

Sophomore tied for 6th place

SCHERERVILLE, Ind. – Sophomore Mallory Russell tied for 6th place to lead the University of Evansville women’s golf team to a top five finish at the Briar Ridge Invitational on Monday afternoon.

Russell’s finish is one better than her previous best of a 7th place tie at the ASU Spring Classic last spring.  Her final two rounds finished at 76 and 79 to give her a 3-round total of 232.  Russell was just two strokes out of the top five.

Allison Enchelmayer earned a top 15 result, tying for 14th place with a 238.  Enchelmayer carded a 79 in the third round.  One behind her was Alyssa McMinn, who finished with a score of 239 on her way to a finish of 19th.  McMinn fired off an 80 in the third round to pick up the top 20.

Lucia Pantigozo had her top round of the event, registering a 79 in the final 18.  Just two shots out of a top 20 outing, Pantigozo’s final total finished at 242.  Caitlin O’Donnell tied for the 29th position.  After scoring an 83 in the first two rounds, she recorded an 86 in the final round to finish with a 252.

Top team honors went to Morehead State.  After trailing by 13 following the first round, the Eagles rallied with a 303 in the third round to finish with a 927.  They bested IUPUI by five strokes while finishing 12 in front of Green Bay.  Evansville picked up a 5th place finish with a 949.  The medalist was Amelie Svejda of IUPUI.  With a tally of 226, she defeated a second-place tie by two shots.

On Monday and Tuesday of next week, the Aces will be in Indianapolis for the Butler Fall Invitational.  Highland Country Club will host the tournament.

USI to begin exploration into feasibility of move to Division I Athletics

0

The University of Southern Indiana is a proud and longtime member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) and Division II athletics with many outstanding achievements, including 10 individual and four team national championships.

Looking to our institution’s future and the 2021-2025 Strategic Plan: Accelerating Impact, I am announcing an exploration into the feasibility of a move to Division I play. The feasibility review will consider a variety of elements including fiscal and facilities requirements and internal and external community support.

The review will not take football into consideration, as this would require investment and facilities that are out of scope at this time.

I want to acknowledge recent reports of announced moves by several Division I schools to other conferences. I am not presently at liberty to discuss what, if any, impact those transitions may have on USI.

This potential move is not one to be taken lightly. There is much to consider. We will be engaging an outside consultant who specializes in these evaluations, undergoing substantial review of the financial requirements and forming a University committee in the coming days. Information gathered will be provided to the USI Board of Trustees for review during their November meeting.

USI has a tradition of being a daring athletic competitor and now is the time to consider where we go from here.

Sincerely,
