EPD Detective Of The Month Is Jonathan Helm

Detective Of The Month Is Jonathan Helm

Detective Helm has been selected as the Detective of the Month for April 2021 for his exemplary dedication to his job and work ethic throughout an extremely busy month. Throughout the month of April, he arrested 18 juveniles and had been assigned 29 cases. The high number of arrests that he personally took care of directly affected the patrol officers by keeping them from being tied up on time-consuming runs and detention bookings.

Not only did he respond to calls for assistance, but he also volunteered for several runs to keep patrol available for other calls. In fact, Detective Helm made such an impact that it was the patrol chain of command who nominated him to receive this recognition.

Detective Helm is a stellar example of the positive impact one person can make, not only within his own unit but also to other units during the same process. This shows how important teamwork is and what a difference it can make.

Congratulations to EPD Detective Jonathan Helmon for a job well done!!

Nine Cleveland Cliffs Employees Earn Certificates From Ivy Tech Community College

0

Nine production technicians at the Cleveland Cliffs (formerly AK Steel) plant in Rockport, IN, have earned an interdisciplinary Industrial Workforce Certificate and Workforce Technical Certificate from Ivy Tech’s Tell City Career & Technology Center location.

“This is an example of a great employer who has developed a way to ‘grow their own’ employees into positions they need and retain talent. It’s why people apply here – they know that Cleveland Cliffs invests in their employees,” said Kyla Dowell, lead employer consultant for Ivy Tech’s Evansville campus. “These individuals, after growing their skillset through classes in such things as basic electricity, motors & motor controls, programmable controllers, and automation-mechatronics electrical and robotic systems, to name just a few, have learned in areas their employer needs and have put themselves in a good spot to move into new positions at the plant.”

General Manager Scott Davis said Cleveland Cliffs could have chosen from a wide variety of options to skill up their employees. “We thought about how do we work to set ourselves up to make transitions. We figured that we need to build on top of what we have today, so we chose Ivy Tech,” Davis said.

Katie King, site director for the Tell City Career & Technology Center handed out the diplomas to the graduates. “The best part of this job is being a part of graduation day. Taking classes close to home, with employer support, gives these graduates opportunities to advance in their careers with their Ivy Tech degree.”

Earning their certificate and technical certificate were:

  • Patrick Burch – Whitesville, Kentucky
  • Stacey Crazymule – Cannelton, Indiana
  • Jody Howard – Lewisport, Kentucky
  • Marshall Jones – Cannelton, Indiana
  • Johnnie Keener – Utica, Kentucky
  • Daniel Robinson -  Cloverpor,t Kentucky
  • Derick Saint – Maceo, Kentucky
  • Tommy Sabastian – Hartford, Kentucky
  • Derrick Stiles – Tell City, Indiana

Companies interested in offering workforce development to their employees or designing an interdisciplinary program specific to their needs to grow their workforce from within, should reach out to Dowell at kdowell15@ivytech.edu to learn more.

Yesteryear: Future Governors Debate in Kokomo

0

May 30 – June 5

The Week in Indiana History

Lane and Hendricks

1860     Henry Lane (left) and Thomas Hendricks, both running for Governor, had a debate in Kokomo.  Lane went on to win the election.  He served as Governor for only two days before being elected to the United States Senate. The Lieutenant Governor, Oliver P. Morton, became Governor.  Hendricks, who had earlier been in Congress, won a United States Senate seat in 1862.  He served a term as Indiana Governor from 1873 – 1877.  In 1884, he was elected Vice President of the United States.

Howard Hawks1902     Howard Hawks was born in Goshen, Indiana.  He moved with his family to California just as the motion picture industry was coming into its own.  Beginning in silent films, he became known as a versatile director who was comfortable with all types of movies, from comedies to dramas to gangster films and westerns.  Some of his most memorable work includes Red River, Sergeant York, Big Sky, and Gentlemen Prefer Blonds.

English

1902     The English Opera House in Indianapolis was packed as the audience was treated to readings by Hoosier authors.  The purpose of the event, introduced by United States Senator Charles Fairbanks, was to raise funds to build a statue of President Benjamin Harrison, who had died the year before.  The program included Lew Wallace (Ben Hur,) Charles Major (Bears of Blue River,) George Barr McCutcheon (Brewster’s Millions) and James Whitcomb Riley (Out to Old Aunt Mary’s)

Berry and Maxwell

1922     Lillian Gay Berry (left)  and Juliette Maxwell became the first women to be named full professors at Indiana University.  Berry taught Latin for 40 years at the school and was a noted classical scholar.  Maxwell, on the faculty for 35 years, served as Director of the Department of Physical Training for Women.

Camp1942     The first official order was issued from the new Camp Atterbury Training Center near Edinburgh.  The facility was named for General William Wallace Atterbury from New Albany, Indiana.  He had served as a staff member to General John G. Pershing in World War I.

Marmon1961     As Speedway drivers prepared to start the Indianapolis 500 Mile race, Ray Harroun, the first Indy 500 winner, drove around the track on the 50th anniversary of his victory.  He was behind the wheel of the original yellow-and-black Marmon “Wasp” which had taken the checkered flag in 1911 at an average speed of 74.6 mph.

Did You Know?

Hollywood is a long way from Indiana, but an impressive number of Hoosiers have found their way to California to establish careers as movie directors.  In addition to Howard Hawks, the list includes Sydney Pollack, from Lafayette, whose hits include Out of Africa, Tootsie, and The Way We Were.  Ray Enright, from Anderson, was a very busy director in the 1930s, turning out a score of movies, including China Clipper, Alibi Ike, and Golden Dawn.  One of the biggest names on the silver screen was Robert Wise, from Winchester.  His filmography practically defines the golden era of movies.  His credits include The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Sand Pebbles, West Side Story, and The Sound of Music.   Perhaps the director most near and dear to the hearts of Indiana basketball fans is David Anspaugh, from Decatur.  He has done a lot of work in television, including Hill Street Blues and Miami Vice.  On the big screen, he won awards in 1993 for Rudy.  But it was the picture he filmed in the small towns of Indiana in 1986 that will forever enshrine him in the Indiana Movie Hall of Fame.  That was, of course, Hoosiers, which so well captures the spirit of high school basketball in Indiana.

EPA Takes Action To Bolster State And Tribal Authority To Protect Water Resources

0

the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced its intent to revise the 2020 Clean Water Act (CWA) Section 401 Certification Rule after determining that it erodes state and Tribal authority. Through this process, EPA intends to strengthen the authority of states and Tribes to protect their vital water resources.

“We have serious water challenges to address as a nation and as EPA Administrator, I will not hesitate to correct decisions that weakened the authority of states and Tribes to protect their waters,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “We need all state, Tribal, local, and federal partners working in collaboration to protect clean water, which underpins sustainable economic development and vibrant communities. Today, we take an important step to realize this commitment and reaffirm the authority of states and Tribes.”

“States and Tribes have relied on the Clean Water Act for almost 50 years to protect our waters and people, and EPA’s action is essential to restoring that historic authority,” said Oregon Governor Kate Brown. “The prior administration’s rule was not only harmful to the environment, it was corrosive to state, federal, and Tribal partnerships. Communities rely on clean water, businesses rely on clean water, and our environment is dependent on clean water. We welcome this important step by the Biden-Harris Administration to restore a strong, collaborative approach to protecting one of America’s most precious resources.”

EPA intends to reconsider and revise the 2020 CWA Section 401 Certification Rule to restore the balance of state, Tribal, and federal authorities while retaining elements that support efficient and effective implementation of Section 401. Congress provided authority to states and Tribes under CWA Section 401 to protect the quality of their waters from adverse impacts resulting from federally licensed or permitted projects. Under Section 401, a federal agency may not issue a license or permit to conduct any activity that may result in any discharge into navigable waters unless the affected state or Tribe certifies that the discharge is in compliance with the Clean Water Act and state law, or waives certification.

The agency’s process of reconsidering and revising the 2020 CWA Section 401 Certification Rule will provide opportunity for public and stakeholder input to inform the development of a proposed regulation, and will include sustained dialogue with state and Tribal co-regulator partners and local governments around these issues. EPA will begin a stakeholder engagement process in June to hear perspectives on this topic and how to move forward. More information will be available at: www.epa.gov/cwa-401.

While EPA engages with stakeholders and develops a revised rule, the 2020 rule will remain in place. The agency will continue listening to states and Tribes about their concerns with implementation of the 2020 rule to evaluate potential administrative approaches to help address these near-term challenges.

Gov. Holcomb Signs COVID-19 Executive Orders

0

INDIANAPOLIS – Today, Governor Eric J. Holcomb signed Executive Order 21-14 to extend the public health emergency. Continuation of the public health emergency allows certain individuals who otherwise would not be eligible to administer COVID-19 vaccinations and allows the state to continue to receive pandemic emergency funds for programs such as the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

He also signed Executive Order 21-15 to adjust and lift other requirements beginning June 1. The Executive Order changes include:

Removing the mask mandate while in state facilities, except for anyone inside any of these state government congregates facilities – the state prisons, state hospitals, Indiana Veterans Home, and the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. Masks are also still required inside COVID testing and vaccination clinics.

Continuing the face-covering requirement inside Indiana schools through June 30. Face coverings are not required outdoors on school grounds.

Starting July 1, local school boards will determine what measures or restrictions are needed in their local schools regarding the spread of COVID-19.

Directing Hoosiers to follow the CDC guidance for fully vaccinated and unvaccinated people regarding mask-wearing and other protective measures.

Waiving any penalties or interest payments accrued on state income taxes on unemployment wages that must be paid due to HEA 1436.

All directives in executive orders which have continued throughout the public health emergency will be rescinded and cease on June 30. Should the public health emergency continue past June 30, a new executive order would expressly set forth a set of directives that would support the state’s vaccination program and provide financial assistance for health and welfare programs.
